Splendid Speaking: Guides Making a Podcast at Podomatic Published: March 2008 This file is located at: www.splendid-speaking.com/community/makepodcast.pdf There are several services available on the web that will host your podcast. This guide looks at a very popular and very easy to use site called 'Podomatic'. Once you've created an account you'll have web space to upload your recordings to plus an automatically generated 'RSS' feed visitors can use to subscribe to your recording. To complete this tutorial, you’ll need a .wav or .mp3 file you have previously recorded for your podcast. 1) To create your Podomatic account go to: www.podomatic.com and click ‘Sign Up’. 2) Add your details. In the section ‘Pick a PodOmatic address’, think of a word or couple or words (without spaces) that sum up the nature of your podcast. This will be the address of your podcast, for example ‘www.englishstudy.podomatic.com. 3) If you have a photograph you’d like to use to identify the podcast – like a logo – upload the file now. 4) Click ‘Post your first episode’. 5) Give your first episode a title. Add key words in the ‘Tags’ box that will help people find your podcast, for example: ‘English’, ‘vocabulary’, ‘ielts’ etc. The ‘Comments’ box is where you add the text that will accompany your podcast, that is the text visitors can read before downloading the recording. If you have a picture to accompany the episode you can browse for it on your computer. Click ‘Import’ to upload your file. (Cont.) 6) A ‘Browse’ button will appear. Click this and find the file you have recorded on your computer. Click ‘Post Episode’. Podomatic will automatically convert your .wav file into .mp3 format. 7) You will then be offered several ways of promoting your podcast episode. We’ll ignore this for now. Click ‘My Podcast’. 8) Your podcast is now published! Before we look at it let’s change the basic template. Click ‘Preferences’. 9) Click ‘View Templates’. 10) Choose a template for your podcast. 11) Finally, click ‘My Podcast’ to view the episode. Here’s an example. Users can click ‘Play’ to listen to the recording ‘live’ or click the right button on the mouse over ‘Download’ and save the file on their computer. 12) To login to the admin section of your site again later, go to the Podomatic website: www.podomatic.com. Click ‘Log in’. In the ‘Username’ section, type the name of your podcast without the .podomatic bit at the end. For example: ‘englishstudy’. Click ‘Manage Podcast’. Spend time exploring the admin section of your site, including the other features within ‘Preferences’.
