INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF AESTHETIC PLASTIC SURGERY August 14-18, 2010 San Francisco, California Moscone Convention Center The San Francisco Marriott Marquis L A FIN O N AN E C UN Celebrating 40 Years of International Leadership R E G I S T R AT I O N B R O C H U R E T N ME Message from the President I welcome you to join us for the 20th Biennial Congress of ISAPS. This year we also celebrate our 40th anniversary. Founded in 1970, ISAPS has grown from a handful of members to become the leading international membership organization in aesthetic surgery with nearly 2,000 members from 87 countries. The Biennial Congress is the centerpiece of our mission and commitment to excellence in aesthetic surgery education worldwide. Dr. Renato Saltz, Education Council Chair, and his committee members have designed an outstanding program with international faculty representing 44 countries – a faculty that excels in leadership, innovation, teaching skills, and a commitment to patient safety. In short, the best of aesthetic surgery worldwide will be in San Francisco. In addition to the official scientific program, we will hold the first ISAPS Global Summit on Patient Safety on Saturday, August 14th. Speakers will include leaders from our own specialty, related specialties, legislators, and representatives from the travel and insurance industries. Admission is free to all Congress registrants and I encourage you to attend this important session. Our Congress venue is the state-of-the-art Moscone Convention Center with ample space for our scientific sessions and exhibits. The Moscone Center is a short walk from our headquarter hotel, the San Francisco Marriott Marquis. San Francisco, one of the most beautiful and vibrant cities in America, will warmly welcome you. The natural beauty, the steep hills, the fabled cable cars, the landmark Golden Gate Bridge, plus world class restaurants, arts and entertainment, and a host of recreational activities await you. As the city’s slogan goes, “Only in San Francisco.” California, the Golden State, welcomes you to visit its redwood forests, snowcapped mountains, Yosemite National Park, and the vineyards of the Napa and Sonoma valleys, all within a day’s drive from San Francisco. The Western United States, with the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Teton mountains, indeed the whole Pacific coast all the way up to Alaska, are only a short plane ride away, making them a great destination for pre-meeting or after-meeting side trips. A memorable summer family vacation awaits you in America! I personally invite you to join us in August for an outstanding educational experience, to enjoy the best that San Francisco and the Golden State have to offer. Come and “Leave your heart in the City by the Bay.” Foad Nahai, MD, FACS President Destination Information Hotel Information Exhibitors & Sponsors Social Events Congress Tours & Travel 15 15 15 16 17-18 PRESIDENT Foad Nahai, USA Past-President Bryan Mendelson, Australia Parliamentarian Thomas Davis, USA Education Council Chair Renato Saltz, USA National Secretaries Chair Theodore Voukidis, Greece Trustee - Past President Joao Sampaio Goes, Brazil Trustee - Elected Andrea Grisotti, Italy Executive Director Catherine B. The 412,000 square foot structure is not only physically impressive, but it just may be the greenest museum on the planet, with a two acre Living Roof, an expansive solar canopy, an extensive water reclamation system, and walls insulated with recycled blue jeans. See What Comes to Life The deepest coral reef exhibit in the world, a 4-story tropical rainforest, a towering T-Rex skeleton, a colony of African penguins, a fully-immersive digital screen by which to fly to the farthest reaches of the Universe: These are just a handful of the many exciting venues, exhibits and animals found within the new Academy. Some History On an evening in 1853—just three years after California joined the United States—seven men assembled in a candle-lit room in San Francisco and founded the first scientific academy west of the Atlantic seaboard. A E ST H ET I C P L A ST I C S U R G E RY The California Academy of Sciences is a multifaceted, scientific institution committed to leading-edge research, to educational outreach, and to finding new and innovative ways to engage and inspire the public. The Academy's mission to explore, explain and protect the natural world - extends to all corners of the institution; from a research expedition in the highlands of Papua, New Guinea, to a teacher training program in a California classroom, to an interactive game on the museum exhibit floor. OF Buses will depart from the Marriott Marquis beginning at 6:30 pm I N T E R N AT I O N A L S O C I E T Y Monday - August 16th - Faculty Dinner (by invitation) OF THE The San Francisco War Memorial Opera House rivals Old World theaters with its elegant lines, vaulted and coffered ceiling, marble foyer and sweeping balconies. Built in 1932, the War Memorial Opera House is the 3,146-seat home to the San Francisco Opera and San Francisco Ballet. Join us for a unique and entertaining Opening Ceremony you will not soon forget, followed by a lavish reception featuring San Francisco’s top 20 restaurants in the charming spaces of this historic building. 2 0 TH C O N G R E S S SOCIAL EVENTS The California Academy of Sciences soon became one of the west's most popular destinations, drawing 80,000 visitors annually to gaze at its giant wooly mammoth, lifelike grizzly bears, native plant specimens and rare artifacts. But when the Great Quake of 1906 struck the city, the Academy's home and all but a handful of specimens were lost. It would not be the last time that nature exacted a price from those who sought to study, protect and preserve it. In 1916, the Academy found a new home, the North American Hall in Golden Gate Park, where it grew over the decades to include Steinhart Aquarium, Simson African Hall, Science Hall, the Morrison Planetarium and more. From 2006 to 2009 the academy was completely renovated to the spectacular, world-class, “green” facility we have today. The new vision: To create an institution for the 21st century - a premier destination of grand design, and one that would bring the latest in scientific research to the public in the most engaging, educational and inspiring way imaginable. 16 CONGRESS TOURS Casto Vacations is the official travel agency for the ISAPS Congress. Here you will marvel at the quiet elegance of an ancient forest of California coastal redwood trees, including some of the oldest and tallest on earth. You can wander through this forest along the well worn paths on your own or with a guide. For the more adventurous, there are also hiking trails that lead you as far as the Pacific Ocean or up to the peak of Mt. Tamalpais where the views of the Bay Area are stunning. This is a fabulous day trip from San Francisco. SAFARI WEST Picture yourself among some of the world's most exotic creatures. See giraffes, gazelles, zebras and many of the other 600 animals that inhabit the preserve. Take an exciting three hour safari drive, traveling first in an authentic safari vehicle and then trekking around the inner grounds on foot. It may not be Africa, but it's close, with animals roaming and running free outside your safari jeep. CATAMARAN SAILING EXCLUSIVE ALASKAN YACHT ADVENTURE Sailing on beautiful San Francisco Bay is a very different way to see the city. Relaxing afternoon Bay cruises and legendary sunset sails are a perfect way to take in the breathtaking San Francisco cityscape and top sightseeing attractions. Enjoy 55' and 65' catamarans as you sail under the Golden Gate Bridge, past Alcatraz Island and the quaint seaside city of Sausalito, and near Kirby Cove where you might spot whales and sea lions, or simply admire the spectacular San Francisco city lights. Consistently voted among the top five things to do in San Francisco, catamaran sailing combines the romance of The City by the Bay with the adventure of the sea. Exclusive yacht cruises explore the innermost waterways and the smallest, most intriguing villages in Alaska’s Inside Passage. The 8 day/7 night itinerary, roundtrip from Juneau aboard the 145-foot, 36-guest Safari Explorer provides active adventure without sacrificing comfort. Unlike larger cruise lines, a highlight is spending two days exploring Glacier Bay National Park with hikes and kayaking. Park restrictions allow only a few at a time to hike into the forest or onto glacial ice with the park ranger and onboard naturalist. Marvel at humpback whales lunging out of the water in multi-ton unison and orca whales breaching the water’s surface in one of the world’s richest marine environments. No one who experiences sailing around Alaska will ever forget the majesty of nature there.
