We had a project in our class on April 28, 2010 with our teacher “George”. We are glad that we had this
opportunity to visit Haight Street, Why? Haight Ashbury is one of San Francisco’s most popular districts.
That’s the place where the hippy-culture began. During the late 1960s and early 1970s the Flower Power
started. This was a slogan that was a symbol of passive resistance and non-violent ideology. Hippies
expressed themselves by wearing bright colors and flowers in their hair. You can find many hippy clothing stores, especially second hand shops and smoking shops like Wasteland and World Famous. That’s
one big reason why the hippies feel at home in 'The Haight'!

The Red Victorian
The Red Victorian is a historic hotel located in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district. It was constructed
in 1904 as the Jefferson Hotel which was a country resort hotel. In 1967 during the Summer of Love it
was called the Jeffrey-Haight, it was a hippie crash pad for the flower children and hippies. Dr. Sami
Sunchild painted the The Red Victorian façade red plus 9
other trim colors in 1977. Today the hotel is known as The
Red Victorian, a living museum peace center and bed &
breakfast. The Red Victorian has been decorated and
restored. Each of the 18 guest rooms has a unique design
and celebrates a theme. There is a Peace Center, a Peace
Arts Gallery, a gift shop and the Red Victory Peace Café.

Amoeba Music is a famous spot in the Haight-Ashbury district. Amoeba music is an independent music
chain with stores in Berkeley, San Francisco and Hollywood. The San Francisco store opened in 1997. It
is a 24,000 square foot former bowling alley. There are upwards of 100,000 CDs, vinyl records and
audio cassettes, both new and used. The store also sells movies, though this is secondary to their
music business.
There is a lovely music store called “Amoeba” at the
end of Haight St.!! It’s huge!! You can find all kinds
of music here. If you love hippie culture, you should
go there.
There is a metal music shop in front of Amoeba.
EXODUS is a metal band from Ashbury. There is not
only psychedelic music but also metal music!

The Booksmith is an independent bookstore located in the Haight-Ashbury district. The store is known
for its ‘Ongoing celebrated events program’ and has hosted many individuals associated with the
counter-culture. There is an interesting thing in the Booksmith. The Booksmith posts handwritten book
recommendations on the shelves. We can feel their deep love for their customers and books.

Victorian Houses
Victorian houses are known for their complex structure and massive embellishments. Their architectural
style is based on the reign of Queen Victoria in England. San Francisco Victorian architecture was
influenced by cultures from all over the world as people came to settle here. Victorian enthusiasts in San
Francisco decorate their houses and paint them in rainbow colors. They are beautiful.
