This is one of the steps on the path to priesthood ordination and makes the recipient an Ordinary Minister of Holy Communion, along with the priests and deacons. Congratulations to these three men. Please continue to pray for them as they journey toward diaconate ordination in the Spring of 2018, and priesthood ordination the following May. • Holy Year Pilgrimage - The Holy Year of Mercy ends with the Solemnity of Christ the King on November 20. As the Holy Year comes to an end, Saint Anthony's will sponsor a bus pilgrimage to the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, one of the churches with a designated Holy Door in order to avail ourselves of the Holy Year Indulgence. The pilgrimage will take place this Saturday, October 29. The bus will leave from Saint Anthony's at 11:45 A.M. and return to Saint Anthony's later that afternoon. At Newark we will be able to process through the Holy Door, have a brief prayer service for the Holy Year Indulgence, and be given a guided tour of the Basilica, including the relics of Pope Saint John Paul II. Sacred Heart Cathedral Basilica is one of the largest and most beautiful churches in the United States -larger than Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York. The Cathedral was elevated to the status of a basilica by Pope Saint John Paul II during his visit to New Jersey in 1995 when he presided at Evening Prayer in the Basilica in the presence of President Bill Clinton. To secure a seat on the bus for the Holy Year Pilgrimage, please call the rectory and make your reservation. Parishioners will also be able to join us by car. • Saints on the Move! - Last week Bishop Serrate IIi blessed the new shrine of Blessed Miriam Theresa Demjanovich at Holy Family Chapel at the College of Saint Elizabeth in Convent Station. Blessed Miriam Theresa was originally buried in the Sisters' Cemetery at Convent Station. In the 1980s, as part of the process for beatification, her body was exhumed and identified, and then was interred in a wall niche in a vestibule of the chapel. With her beatification last year, she has now been moved to a beautiful new shrine in the body of the chapel. When you are in the area, please visit the new shrine. The United States has a total of fifteen canonized saints and beatified blesseds. You would think that their remains would be pretty permanent, but in the last few months two others, besides Blessed Miriam Theresa, have moved. Saint Marianne Cope, who worked with Father Damian and the lepers on the Hawaiian island of Moloka'l, moved from the motherhouse chapel of her Franciscan Sisters in Syracuse, New York to a new shrine in the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Honolulu, Hawaii. And Saint Katherine Drexel, the foundress of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indian and Colored People, also recently moved from her community's motherhouse chapel in Bensalem, Pennsylvania to a new shrine in the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia. Both of these moves took place because these two religious communities, like many others in our country, were selling their motherhouse property in order to downsize to more appropriate facilities. If you are on vacation or traveling in the area, by all means go and visit the shrines, the burial places of America's most holy. The other holy Americans are honored in the following shrines: Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini is buried in the chapel of the Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini Shrine at 701 Fort Washington Avenue in Manhattan. Saint John Neumann's shrine is at Saint Peter the Apostle Church, 1019 North Fifth St., Philadelphia. Saints Isaac Jogues, Rene Goupil, and John Lalande, part of the eight Jesuit North American Martyrs, were martyred in upstate New York and their remains have never been recovered. The shrine at their martyrdom site is Our Lady of the Martyrs Shrine, Auriesville, Fultonville, New York. Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton is buried in the basilica named after her at the Daughters of Charity Motherhouse, 333 South Seton Ave., Emmitsburg, Maryland. Saint Theodore Ann Guerin is buried in the motherhouse chapel of the Sisters of Providence in Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana. Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne is buried in the motherhouse chapel of the Religious of the Sacred Heart, 301 Decatur Street, St. Charles, Missouri. 3 Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos is enshrined in Saint Mary's Assumption Church, 919 Josephine Street, New Orleans, Louisiana. Saint Junipero Serra is buried in the Mission Basilica of San Carlos Borromeo, 3080 Rio Road, Carmel, California. Saint Kateri Tekakwitha is enshrined in Saint Francis Xavier Mission Church, Kahnawake, Quebec, Canada. And, Saint Damien de Veuster, the leper priest of Moloka'i is buried in the motherhouse chapel of the Sacred Hearts Fathers in Louvain, Belgium, although the relic of his right hand has recently been returned to his original grave at the Kalaupapa settlement on the island of Moloka'i. As we draw near the Solemnity of All Saints, we honor in particular, those holy men and women who have walked the streets of our own country. Blessed be God in all his saints. • This summer I will be leading a The dates are July 7-17 and we will be cruising from Stockholm, Sweden to Saint Petersburg, Russia with stops in Helsinki, Finland, Tallin, Estonia and Riga, Latvia on the Baltic Sea. The price is $3598. There will be a meeting on the trip on Sunday, October 30 at Holy Family Church Hall in Florham Park at 2:00 P.M. For a flyer on the trip call the rectory. • As we draw near to Roman Ritual. we offer the traditional prayer of commendation from the Go forth, Christian soul, from this world in the name of God, the almighty Father, who created you, in the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, who suffered for you, in the name of the Holy Spirit, who was poured out upon you, go forth, faithful Christian. May you live in peace this day, may your home be with God in Zion, with Mary, the virgin Mother of God, with Joseph, and with all the angels and saints. May you return to your Creator who formed you from the dust of the earth. May holy Mary, the angels and all the saints come to meet you as you go forth from this life. May you see your Redeemer face to face. Amen. God bless you all, Father Ray 4 FAITH FORMATION THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Sirach 35:12-14, 16-18 God is just and does not show favoritism, but hears the prayers of everyone. Anyone who serves God, no matter how lowly his position here on earth, will be heard and answered. Bands of Marriage Second Reading: 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18 Paul writes to Timothy that he thinks his mission is near the end, and he is glad his faith is still strong. Paul hopes that all nations will hear the gospel. But, if he is executed as he anticipates, he is sure he will live forever in heaven. Matthew Raymond Marquis-Hawthorne & Athena P. Alcantara – Hawthorne Gospel: Luke 18:9-14 Jesus tells a parable about a Pharisee who went to the temple, and offered up a prayer of thanks because he was not a sinner like the tax collector who was also there to pray. The tax collector was far more humble, acknowledging his sins, and asking forgiveness for them. Jesus said the tax collector's prayer would be heard because, "Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, while he who humbles himself will be exalted." —————————————Lighthouse Baby PARISH CHOIR – “LAST CALL” TO SING WITH THE CHOIR FOR LESSONS & CAROLS AND CHRISTMAS: Because of the amount and complexity of the music for Lessons & Carols and Christmas, the final opportunity to join the Choir and sing for these Liturgies will be on Thursday evening, October 27. At present, the Parish Choir is singing at the 10:00am Mass on Sunday morning. If you are interested in singing with the Choir, you are asked to begin attending the rehearsals (10-20, 10-27, 11-3 etc.). You DO NOT need to read music or have an operatic voice to be a member of the choir. The only requirements are the ability to attend rehearsals regularly and the ability to sing with the choir when they are scheduled. We continue to need Sopranos (high woman’s voice), Altos (low woman’s voice), Tenors (high men’s voice) and Bass’ (low men’s voice). The Choir is open to anyone of high school age and above. This is a good way to give back to your parish and tithe your time and talent to this important ministry. Please feel free to speak with me directly for further information.
