A Word From Your Governor
What an exciting time it is to be a Lion in District 18-A. Let me
start this message off by apologizing for this article and newsletter
being late. It’s my fault, no excuse I just didn’t get it done. Thank
you Amy for your patience!
Life has its share of happiness, blessings and joys but occasionally, unfortunately it can also have its share of tragedy, defeat and disappointment. It happens generally in all of our lives. By their mere definition these
events aren’t planned and can be very catastrophic to ones life. Think for just a
moment what it would be like if tragedy should come your way. What would you
do, who would you call, where would you go, would anybody be there for you?
Questions that none of us would ever want to face but could be confronted with
at any time.
International President Jimmy Ross has asked Lions around the world to develop
just such a plan to assist our neighbors when tragedy strikes. Lions ALERT is the
name given to this program. The basic concept is that each district across the
county would develop a team from across the district to assist when tragedy
strikes. Lions would be on site at an apartment fire or a tornado or during a heat
wave to provide food, comfort and support to hurting people. Since it would be
district based it would allow local Lions to be more responsive to our local needs.
Vice District Governor Vanessa Stanley and Marietta President Ralph Slaughter
are going to help our district advance this program. Lion Ralph actually had this
idea and has already recruited a member who owns a concession trailer who is
willing to support us in this program. When we discussed this at our president’s
session prior to the cabinet meeting in Rome it was very favorably supported.
Now what we need are volunteers from across the district
to contact Vice District Governor Vanessa, Lion President
Ralph or myself and let us know that you would be willing
to join our ALERT team. I know that we have folks from
across our district who have the skills that can help us
make a wonderful positive difference in peoples lives.
Please let us hear from you soon!
It is a wonderful time to be a Lion, have you invited anyone to join today?
Have a wonderful month,
Lion Randy

opinion. It is a pleasant way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Please come and join the fun!

Sight Night
Halloween Night is "Sight Night' for the Gift of Sight Foundation. Each year on Sight Night, "ghouls" and boys collect
used eyewear during trick-or-treat. All the eyewear collected
on Sight Night is then cleaned, repaired and hand-delivered
to underprivileged people in developing countries who couldn't otherwise
afford them.
This is the eighth annual Sight Night. Since the program began in 1999,
more than 900,000 pair of eyewear have been collected -- enough to help
approximately 30,000 people on 30 separate missions! In 2007, we have
20 international missions planned and will need to recycle 1.2 million pair
of used eyewear to make these missions a success. Your participation in
Sight Night will help us achieve our goal.
We're looking to scare up some "spooktacular" volunteers to collect used
prescription glasses and non-prescription sunglasses so click here to get
you or your entire group involved in Sight Night!

The Lions of District 18-A gave a helping hand to the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon on Labor
Day for the 4th year in a row. Lions from East Cobb, Marietta, Paulding County, Atlanta
Metro, Kennesaw-Acworth, West Cobb, Austell, Sandy Springs, and Cartersville arrived early
on September 4 to work the 9 a.m. to noon shift taking telephone pledges. Together, we helped
MDA raise $1.3 million dollars locally and a record breaking $61
million dollars nationally.
Lion Bob Hennessey, a 30 year volunteer with MDA and a member
of the East Cobb club, suggested that the Lions of our district take
on this project and has coordinated the project each year.
This is a rewarding effort and a lot of fun. We got to meet several local TV and radio personalities, including Rhubarb Jones. Rhubarb was the recipient of a Lions club help in his home
town as a child. It changed his life and he is not bashful about thanking Lions for what they did
and continue to do.
Plan on being with us next year!

LEADER DOGS FOR THE BLIND
“Our Mission is to Enhance the Lives of Blind and Visually Impaired Individuals”
CONGRATULATIONS, 18A!
You have been recognized as a 100% District in Club contributions. Past District Governor
Jane Price received special recognition from Leader Dogs for the Blind on behalf of your contributions which make it possible for the blind to have independence and mobility with the assistance of a Leader Dog or Tracker GPS along with high-quality, experienced training to insure the best possible results. These are significant life-changes gifts that your contributions
have made possible. As is typical of Lions, you just keep giving and being there to supply the
need. On behalf of Leader Dogs for the Blind and the recipients of LD services, I say
“thanks” to you all for working so hard to maintain the commitment that our founding Lions
made 67 years ago when LD was established.
I have prepared Certificates of Appreciation for all Lions Clubs in District 18A in recognition of this outstanding accomplishment. I distributed Certificates to those in attendance
at the District Rally in Rome and I will be mailing the other certificates to the Club Secretary
as listed in the 2006-07 Directory within the next week. As your LD Chair, I too say thank you
for your contribution and I will enjoy working with you again this year.
We have begun a new Lions year, and it’s time to remember Leader Dogs for the Blind
as you prepare your budgets and make commitments for distribution of funds from club fundraisers. Your contributions are vitally important and we will be working to achieve even
greater participation between now and May 2007. To assist in insuring that your club receives
the credit for your contribution, please make your club check payable to Leader Dogs for the
Blind and write District 18A on the “For” line in the lower left corner. If you are making the
contribution by personal check, please also include your club name in the “For” line. It would
be helpful if you would send the check to me (Jane Finley, Leader Dog Chair, 100 Littlefield
Road, Adairsville GA 30103) and I will forward to Headquarters.
I hope you will invite me to present a program to your club members. I am available
and will work with you on a date. If I visited last year, there is additional information for new
and innovative programs without being repetitive. Give me a call at 770-773-9669 or 770-5168438 or email: mjfarms100@aol.com I look forward to hearing from you.
