their lunch break. While both men are playing quickly, they
are often held up by two women in front of them moving
at a very slow pace. Joe offers to talk to the women to see
if they can speed it up a it. He gets about halfway there,
stops, and jogs back.
His boss asks what the problem is. “Well, one of those
women is my wife and the other is my mistress,” complained Joe.

ADVICE FOR PROSPECTIVE DOG ADOPTERS
Shelter dogs make great companions. Many shelters
have an array of dogs ready to be adopted, but prospective adopters should prepare for their visits before going to
the shelter so they can be sure they end up with the right
dog for them. The American Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals offers the following advice to men and
women considering adopting a shelter dog.
• Decide what you’re looking for. No two dogs are the
same, and the ASPCA advises that prospective adopters
identify what they’re looking for in a dog before visiting the
shelter. Parents of young children may want a dog that’s
great with kids, while single men and women may want a
dog that does not require a lot of maintenance. Knowing
what you’re looking for before you visit a shelter and fall in
love with a dog will ensure you get a dog whose behavior
and needs are compatible with your lifestyle. Adopting a
dog that does not suit your needs can prove problematic
for both you and the animal.
• Learn about the dog’s past and personality. No shelter
wants to arrange an adoption and then have the pet owner
return the pet in a few weeks, so many are open about
the dog’s past. Ask for information about the dog’s intake,
including the reason its former owner surrendered the animal. Ask for medical records and if the shelter conducted
a behavior evaluation on the dog. Prospective adopters
should also be as observant as possible upon visiting the
shelter, paying attention to how the dog interacts with staff,
shelter visitors and other dogs. Ask staff members about
the dog’s personality if you’re having trouble observing it on
your own.
• Spend time at the shelter. Adopting a dog is something
to take seriously, so prospective adopters should expect
to spend ample time at the shelter before choosing a dog.
Walk around the shelter, picking out a few dogs you find
appealing. Then observe these dogs for signs of friendliness, such as pawing and wagging their tails and pressing
against the front of the kennel. Some dogs may be shy,
but the ASPCA notes that dogs that stay in the back of the
kennel may need more time and training to adapt to a new
home, which might make them more suitable to adopters
without children. Before adopting a dog, spend significant
time with the animal so you get a better feel for how it interacts with you.

Many of the unsavory behaviors associated with pet parrots are not inherent to
the bird but are learned reactions that result from interacting with humans. In
the wild, parrots are social creatures and do not need to look far to communicate with others. Often their calls are returned quite quickly by other parrots or
birds. In solitary cages, parrots may try to get the attention of their caretakers
through the usual means, only to find that they get no response. Over time,
a parrot may resort to screaming or making other loud noises, which people
are not able to ignore. If the parrot owner reprimands the parrot or acknowledges the screaming, he or she has just inadvertently let the parrot know that
this is an effective way to gain attention. A similar thing occurs with biting. In
the wild, parrots may use body language to warn off other animals before they need to resort to biting. However, humans
may not be tuned into these clues and may end up pushing the boundaries with the bird. Biting may be the only way the
parrot gets the message across that it does not want to be bothered at the time. Some parrots grow accustomed to biting
simply because this gets the fastest reaction. Parrot owners need to become acquainted with the behaviors of parrots and
avoid conditioning parrots to be poor companions. The bird owner should provide opportunities for socialization and time for
play, and he or she should respect when the parrot wants to be hands-off. This can strengthen the parrot-owner relationship.

TIPS FOR BRINGING A NEW CAT HOME
Cats and dogs are the two most popular types of pets in
the country, and while dogs have been dubbed “man’s best
friend,” cat owners are quite vocal when expressing their
love for their feline friends.
Those looking for a cat may not have to look far. The
ASPCA says approximately 7.6 million companion animals
enter animal shelters nationwide every year, and roughly
3.4 million of those are cats. An area shelter is an ideal
place to find a new pet for those thinking of getting their
first cat or adding to the pets already in the household.
Cats can be purchased from pet stores, but they also may
be available via friends or family members who have recently welcomed a new litter.
Before bringing your cat home, it is best to make sure
you and members of your household are prepared to welcome a furry feline friend into your home.
• Is everyone ready for the responsibility? Pets are a big
responsibility, and all members of the household should be
ready and willing to pitch in and care for pets. Divide duties
based on age and physical ability. If a member of the family
doesn’t support the decision to get a cat, this might not be
the right time to do so.
• Find the right match in a pet. Temperament can play
a role in how well a cat fits in with your family. A cat that is
fearful and skittish may not be the best match for a family
with young, active children. Special-needs cats may be better for adult-only homes or for people who can devote the
extra time needed to properly care for the animal.
• Designate a cat-friendly spot in your home. A new cat
may need some time before he or she acclimates to a new
environment. To facilitate this process, designate a room or
area in the house for your cat. This should be a low-traffic
spot. Keep a litter box and food and water bowls nearby.
• Stock up on your supplies. Cats will need various pet
supplies to be comfortable and healthy. For the time being,
use the same products the cat had at the shelter or pet
store, which can create a sense of familiarity that makes
cats more comfortable in their new homes. Over time you
can transition slowly to new supplies, including:
- litter box and litter material
- food
- food and water bowls
- scratching posts
- interactive toys and solo toys
- brushes and other grooming supplies
- sturdy cat carriers
• Find the right veterinarian. Select a veterinarian whom
you trust and makes you feel comfortable. Have your cat
examined by the vet and discuss any questions or concerns you may have. A vet may be able to install microchip
in your cat for identification purposes as well.
• Safe-proof your home. Cats can be curious, and many
will want to investigate rooms throughout your house. To
protect curious cats, keep cleaning products and other
chemicals locked away and secure electric wires with cord
containment devices. Know which houseplants are toxic
and, if you don’t discard them, make sure they cannot be
reached by cats.
Cats make wonderful pets. Bringing a new cat home often requires taking certain steps to ensure your furry friend
is comfortable in his or her new home.

The benefits of dog training extend to both the owner and the animal engaged in the training. Evidence suggests that dogs that
are properly trained are happier than those that are not trained because trained dogs know boundaries and what to expect each
day. Dog trainers and animal experts routinely point to lack of structure in a dog’s life as the main reasons why pets engage in
poor behavior or develop unsavory dispositions. Dogs that exhibit improper behavior may be classified as troubled and are more
likely to end up in shelters or rescues. Proper training can remove many of the challenges owners and pets face together. Dogs
are not only intelligent animals, but also social ones. They come from a well-established lineage of pack animals, according to
pet food manufacturer Canidae. Like their close cousins, the wolves, dogs inherently fit into a social order within a pack. Without
parameters, dogs can be unstable, confused and always in conflict. Pet owners who establish themselves as the pack leader
and provide consistent instruction and control can improve their dogs’ lives. Pet owners can make decisions for their dogs while
making sure they, and not the dogs, are the ones in control. Eat first, win games of tug of war, provide correction when the rules
aren’t followed, and move the dog out of the way if you need to get by. Establishing dominance should not be mistaken for cruelty. All in all, training and obedience will strengthen the bond between pet and owner. And the more reliable and trustworthy the
dog’s behavior, the greater freedom he or she can be given – which can lead to a happier life.

DID YOU KNOW?
While parents often struggle to get their children to put down their devices and/or turn
off the television, an unscientific 2014 study from researchers at Boston University
Medical Center discovered that parents might just be the ones who need to step away
from their smartphones. Dr. Jenny Radesky, a developmental pediatrician, and two
fellow researchers observed 55 separate groups of caregivers, oftentimes parents, and
young children dining at restaurants around Boston. Of the 55 caregivers under observation, 40 used mobile devices during the meal and 16 used such devices throughout the meal. In addition, Radesky and her fellow researchers noticed that children
whose caregivers were most absorbed in their devices were more likely to act out.

the snooze button over and over again. A few extra minutes each
morning can make you feel more relaxed and make for a smooth,
stress-free start to the day.
• Get some work done the night before. Prepare lunches the night
before and have them ready in the refrigerator. In addition, lay
your clothes for the following day out each night. This saves time
and takes a couple more things off your morning to-do list.
• Ease back into a routine. As a new school year dawns or a long
vacation comes to an end, begin going to bed earlier and start
waking up earlier as well. This can make the transition from carefree mornings to busy mornings go more smoothly.
• Prep backpacks in the evening. Look through folders, sign paperwork, check assignments, and do whatever it is you need to do
the night before to save your family from having to scramble in
the morning. This ensures those permission slips get signed and
items make it back into school bags.
• Opt for school lunch a few times. Look ahead on the school
lunch menu and speak with children about which meals they enjoy. Let kids purchase school lunch on those days to give yourself
a day off from lunch detail.
• Have quick breakfast foods available. Smoothies, cereal bars,
oatmeal, and whole-grain cereals are fast and nutritious ways to
start the day.
• Carpool whenever possible. Busy families can save themselves
extra work by proposing a neighborhood carpool. Sharing school
dropoff detail frees time up for parents once or twice a week, and
kids may enjoy traveling to school with their friends.
Mornings can be tricky when family members are getting ready
for school and work at the same time. By practicing a few daily
rituals, it’s possible to curb the rush and start the day happier and
more relaxed.
CUTTING COSTS AT THE GROCERY STORE
Parents know the cost of raising a family can be considerable.
While some of the expenses associated with raising a family, including healthcare premiums, are largely beyond parents’ control,
moms and dads can take steps to cut costs and start saving money.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ 2014 Annual
Expenditure Survey, parents devoted about 8 percent of their family spending to groceries in 2013. Families with more than two
children no doubt spend even more on groceries, which may be
stretching their budgets very thin. Fortunately, parents concerned
about their grocery bills can employ various strategies to lower
those bills and start saving more.
• Never shop without first making a list. Modern grocery stores
are much bigger than they might have been when today’s parents
were growing up. While that might be more convenient by ensuring parents can find all their groceries under one roof, it also
can lead to more impulse buys as shoppers stroll aisles and pass
display after display. Lists can help you avoid purchasing items
you don’t need.
• Keep the kids at home. Kids have a knack for finding unhealthy
snacks and beverages, and parents may cave to the temptation to
purchase such items in an attempt to get youngsters to calm down.
By keeping kids at home while you grocery shop, you can limit
distractions and get out of the store quickly. That reduces the likelihood that you will buy items you don’t need, which will save you
time and money.
• Resolve to prepare meals with items that have been abandoned
in your pantry. Few people, especially parents, wait until their
pantries are completely empty to go grocery shopping. If your
pantry is full, clean it out and place some of the older, unexpired
items on the counter, resolving to use them for meals during the
week. This is a great way to make use of items you already purchased but might have forgotten about while also ensuring your
money is not going to waste.
• Buy in bulk. Buying certain
items in bulk can save large
families considerable amounts
of money. For example, buying
a 100-count box of garbage bags
for $15 every few months at your
local home improvement store is
more financially savvy than purchasing a 10-count box of garbage bags for $5 every couple of
weeks. Avoid buying perishable
items in bulk, as you run the risk
of not eating the items before
they expire, negating any savings
you might have realized by buying in bulk.

After boarding the plane and waiting for what seemed like
an eternity, the flight attendant announced over the intercom that “we’re just waiting for the pilots.” The passengers
looked out the windows and saw two men, dressed as pilots, walking toward the plane. Both men were using guide
dogs and appeared to be blind.
There were murmurs among the passengers, and some
believed it to be a joke. The men boarded the plane and
went into the cockpit. More concerned murmurs and uneasy chuckles from the passengers.
The plane taxied normally to the runway and began its
takeoff. As passengers looked out the windows, they realized they were nearing the end of the runway. The entire
passenger cabin began to scream but the plane lifted off
just before the end of the runway.
The passengers calmed down and chuckled to themselves,
at this point believing they had fallen for a joke.
In the cockpit, the pilot turned to his copilot and said, “You
know, one day those people are going to scream too late
and we’re all going to die!”

According to data reported to U.S. News & World
Report from 711 ranked private universities (‘ranked’
schools meet certain criteria established by U.S. News
& World Report), the average tuition and fees for private universities during the 2015-2016 school year
was $32,599. Among the schools that reported their
figures to U.S. News & Report, Vassar College in New
York charged the most at $51,300, narrowly exceeding another school in the Empire State, Sarah Lawrence College, which charged its students $51,034
for the 2015-2016 school year. On the opposite end of
the spectrum, Berea College in Kentucky charged just
$870 in tuition and fees during the 2015-2016 school
year. But that extraordinarily low tuition is somewhat
misleading, as Berea College provides every admitted
student the equivalent of a four-year, full-tuition scholarship. American college students might be surprised
to learn that the burden of college tuition is perhaps
not as burdensome for students born overseas. For
example, the most expensive university in England,
the University of Cambridge, will charge its domestic and European Union students the maximum tuition fees allowed for the 2016-2017 school year. That
translates to £9,000, or just more than $13,000, for

tablespoons chipotle powder
tablespoons ground cumin
Combine all the ingredients in a medium
mixing bowl. Transfer to a covered
container and store in a cool, dry place.
Makes 1 cup.
1. Combine all the ingredients for the chipotle cream — except for the zest — in a food processor. Process until evenly
incorporated.
2. Remove to a medium bowl and fold in the zest. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
3. Mix the Texas Chili Spice Mix with the oil to make a paste. Dust the skirt steak with salt, then baste with the paste.
4. Marinate for 1 hour and then grill over high heat to medium rare. Set aside and allow to rest.
5. In a large, heavy-bottom pot, render the diced bacon until it is crispy. Add the onions, green peppers and garlic, and
saute until slightly brown.
6. Add the tomatoes, brown sugar, oregano, chili powder, tomatillos, flour, and chipotle. Heat for 3 minutes, or
until the mixture begins to thicken.
7. Add the beef broth, bring to a boil, and reduce to a simmer. Simmer uncovered for 1 hour.
8. Cut the steak against the grain into small cubes. Add the steak and beans to the chili, and simmer for
an additional 20 minutes.
9. Add most of the chopped cilantro and serve over crushed tortilla chips with a dollop of chipotle cream
and a sprinkling of fresh cilantro on top.
