2001 Power Plus Revs
ISO 9001 Certified Transforming the Future of Power Technology Product Bulletin PowerPlus Series High-Frequency Power Conversion Technology ™ PowerPlus—A Totally New Technology that Provides a Better, More Cost-Efficient Way to Collect Particulate NWL’s PowerPlus Series represents an entirely new way of thinking about electrostatic precipitator (ESP) power supplies. This exciting new approach uses state-of-the-art, threephase, high-frequency, solid-state switchmode technology for collecting the particulate matter in ESPs. The PowerPlus is not just a T/R and Controller, but a complete Power System. This new technology offers significant advantages over conventional Transformer/Rectifier. • More efficient—puts up to 30% more power into the ESP • Combines T/R, controller, and ground switch in one package • Requires less input current • Easier to install • Field serviceable • Smaller and lighter than traditional (T/R's) • Limited duct work required Units in the PowerPlus Series weigh less than 25% of conventional systems while occupying only 55% of their footprint and 40% of their volume. Yet these units will provide superior performance with dramatically reduced operational costs. The PowerPlus Series is now available in three different kW ratings. All models can be run at 70 kV. Their amperage output is 400ma, 800ma and 1000ma, respectively PowerPlus represents more than just the next generation of power supplies for pollution control, but a quantum technological leap in performance and economy—all in a smaller, more-manageable package. Product Bulletin 2 ■ Greater efficiency—The PowerPlus Series can dramatically improve collection efficiency by delivering higher average kV and more current to the ESP. Traditional T/Rs generate higher peak voltages due to higher ripple that causes sparking in the ESP collection field, thus limiting the average voltage to electrodes. The PowerPlus Series allows the ESP to operate at higher average voltage and current (Less ripple) up to the point at which sparking occurs. The PowerPlus improves overall system efficiency. ■ More cost effective—PowerPlus requires less input KVA then the conventional T/R and control systems, while delivering the same kW output. PowerPlus also allows faster arc shutdown so less energy from the source is sent to the ESP during arcing. In addition, the Series requires less transformer fluid, reducing containment problems. The chance of fluid ignition is also reduced due to the high speed of its Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) control devices and the defined impedance of the resonant circuit. Since their reduced size and weight facilitate faster installation and there is no separate control cabinet to install, savings can occur even prior to operation. ■ Better control—Since they operate at frequencies much higher than the input line, power to the ESP can be controlled within microseconds, independent of the line frequency. As a result, more advanced control strategies can be employed than with phase-controlled SCRs. For example, PowerPlus allows faster, more precise control of voltage recovery following an arc, and intermittent energization timing is not tied to the line frequency and modulation of the output voltage. The PowerPlus Series also offers greater control options and flexibility, whether locally as a standalone display/control system, or when connected with NWL’s PCAMS (Precipitator Control and Monitoring System). PCAMS provides real-time monitoring and control of all ESP, Power, and Rapping parameters of one or multiple ESPs from a personal computer. ■ An integrated system—Each PowerPlus System is delivered ready for convenient installation as an integrated, three-phase input, DC-output package that includes the controller and optional ground switches. ■ Field-serviceable—PowerPlus units are designed for easy field replacement of all major components so the complete unit should never need to be removed from the precipitator. All assemblies, except the transformer/rectifier tank, weigh less than 45 pounds. The tank assembly weighs 500 pounds, which will be much easier to field replace than conventional 60Hz TR sets. ■ Total technical support—While PowerPlus is a radically different product for ESPs, it draws upon NWL’s extensive design and manufacturing experience. For more than 20 years NWL has provided high-frequency transformers/rectifiers and other components for a wide variety of industrial and military applications. The products also rely on innovative capacitor technology from NWL’s Snow Hill, NC Capacitor Division. With NWL, you also get expert 24/7 technical support and diagnostics from a singlesource supplier, a company that has been serving the power and process industries with power systems for more than 50 years. ■ Trial offer—NWL offers trial installations of three months to allow you to evaluate this new technology, along with a variety of options and accessories.
