In Slovenia, in the Alps and in Europe, there is only one
Bohinj: unique, provocatively enchanting, bewilderingly
mysterious and uncomparable.*
Bohinj lies in the heart of the Julian Alps, the
largest and loftiest mountain group in Slovenia
and the furthest south-eastern section of the
Alps.
In the south it is bounded by the Lower Bohinj Mountains, which continue in an arc into
the Triglav chain, dominated by Mount Triglav,
from which the Triglav National Park takes its
name.
The Lower and Upper Bohinj Valley, the Pokljuka plateau in the north and Jelovica in the south
and the basin of the lake – Bohinj is all of this.
The most famous attraction is Lake Bohinj, the
largest permanent freshwater lake in Slovenia.
It is not the only lake in Bohinj. The mountains
around Triglav hide a further seven magical
little lakes.
Human beings first settled in Bohinj 2,500
years ago. The cultural landscape has been
formed over the course of long centuries, and
it truly is something special. Over twenty villages spread across an area lying at between
500 and 900 metres above sea level is hidding
a wonderfull rich past, the zest for life of the
present and the mystery of the future.

Don’t go to Bohinj if you are looking for big
hotels, budget restaurants, smoke-filled snack
bars, swimming amidst shrieking hordes,
queues for cable cars and drag lifts, cyclists
hurtling up hill and down dale, racing paragliders, the pastel mosaics of packed car parks, a
rubbish-strewn lake shore, deafening music
booming out from every bar, markets selling
junk to tourists… Elsewhere in the Alps there

Bohinj is not a shopping centre built on a rundown site surrounded by rubbish dumps but a

THE TRIGLAV NATIONAL PARK
More than two thirds of Bohinj lies in the protected area of the Triglav National Park, the only
national park in Slovenia. The Triglav National
Park covers almost all of the Julian Alps on the
Slovenian side. The highest point is the summit of Mount Triglav (2864 m), after which the
park is named. The notable features of the park
are the mountainous world with the loftiest and
mightiest peaks, deep glacial valleys, lakes, rivers and gorges, alpine pastures, forests, rich
cultural heritage and picturesque villages with
a carefully tended cultural landscape.
Getting to know nature, the cultural landscape
and the people in the park is an extraordinary
experience, but one which also requires us to
remember the fundamental goals of nature
protection. We want your experience of the
Triglav National Park to be genuine and rich. At
the same time, however, you should not forget
that you are the guest of wonderful but vulnerable nature, which should remain unaltered

Hiking
Bohinj is not a starting-point for extreme
climbing expeditions but it does offer countless
opportunities for climbing and hill-walking.
It is a good idea to choose your destinations
carefully, since otherwise the inexperienced or
poorly equipped may find themselves in serious
difficulty. Above all, you should be clear in your
mind as to whether you are setting off on an
undemanding Sunday stroll or on an alpine
climb.
Rudnica, which offers views of both Bohinj
valleys, is probably the hill with the largest
number of loyal visitors. Traversing the ridge
of the South Bohinj Mountains also offers
incredible views. From here, on fine days, you
can see as far as the Gulf of Trieste and, other
directions, the Triglav chain, the Karavanke
range and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Thanks to
its exposed position, Mount Pr{ivec also has
a special place. Although not especially high –
1761 m – its height is exalted by its reflection
in Lake Bohinj. The highest prong of its crown
offers a magnificent view. Bohinj can also be
the starting-point for an ascent of Slovenia’s
highest mountain – Triglav.
In the summer months Bohinj’s alpine meadows
are covered with a gorgeous carpet of flowers,
the like of which would be hard to find anywhere
in the world.
In some of the alpine pastures the tinkling of
cowbells can still be heard. Cheese, made in the
high pastures will bring a smile to the face of
even the most pampered gourmet.
The more regardful and patient visitor will
have the chance to capture in their camera lens
a chamois, an adder or even a golden eagle –
some of which still build their nests on remote
rocks.

Cycling
A bicycle is a good choice to explore Bohinj.
Particularly in the tourist season, a car can be a
nuisance. With a bicycle, you can avoid the traffic on paths running through trees and meadows and you won’t be in anyone’s way on the
narrow village streets. You can choose “Sunday
cycling” along a cycle path or an adrenalinefuelled ride down precipitous cart tracks.

Paragliding
If you literally want to take off in Bohinj, you
will probably opt for paragliding. Flying conditions are interesting even for top paragliders,
since in favourable weather conditions it is
possible to initiate extremely long flights here.
Because Bohinj is a closed alpine valley, flying
conditions can be very demanding in certain
weather conditions. We therefore advise you to
consult local flyers before taking off.

A cold drink is really only a temporary solution
on a hot summer’s day. Drifting lazily downstream, leaping over a waterfall in a rush of
adrenaline, watching the play of sunbeams in
the rapids of a stream, sitting idly by the dark
green pools in the gorges of the Mostnica or
splashing in the crystal-clear water of the lake:
enough to convince you that there is actually
nothing wrong with the hot sun.

Fishing
The patience and passion of the hunter inside
every human being will reward every fisherman
who sets off to catch his prey. The fish that
swim in the clean waters of Bohinj are lively
and full of life. Catching them is a special challenge and an unforgettable experience. Tale
your choice of Arctic char, rainbow trout, chub,
burbot and brown trout.
The fishing season lasts from 1 March to 14
November for Lake Bohinj, from1 April to 14
November for the Sava Bohinjka and from 1
June to 14 November for the Mostnica.

Winter
Winter sports have a rich tradition in Bohinj.
The first national skiing competitions were held
here. Today there is something for everyone –
whatever the preferred method of descending
the snow-covered slopes.
Downhill skiers and snowboarders can choose
from four ski centres. Snowboarders will also
enjoy the snowboarding park on Vogel, increasingly popular among top snowboarders.
Cross-country skiers can set off on the circular
cross-country trail at Dobrava. It is no exaggeration to say that it is the most beautiful trail
for miles around. There are also trails in Ukanc,
on Fužinarsko Polje, in the Upper Bohinj Valley
below the Senožeta ski centre and in Gorju{e.
In winters when there is little snow, you can
always try Goreljek and Rudno Polje.

LD Turizem office provides 300 beds
in private rooms and apartments in
the village of Bohinjska Bistrica and its
surroundings. Apartments and rooms
are located near the Kobla Ski Centre,
about 6 km from Lake Bohinj.
We sell all sorts of tourist guides,
mountain maps, postcards and fishing permits. You can also book sports
programs, trips, journeys and skiing
holidays in Slovenia or abroad at our
office. We rent bikes. The office is located on the main road, a few meters
before the main crossroad in the Bohinjska Bistrica village.

One of the oldest known Alpine clubs has been offering assistance and services to
visitors to the Triglav range for decades.
- the four mountain hut club offers climbers a safe shelter, food and
refreshing beverages,
- it ensures that the mountain trails in its area are safe, well-kept and wellmarked,
- with its mountain guides it provides a safe and expert guide service,
- it trains children and young people from the Bohinj area and beyond, faithful
to the slogan “vsak Bohinjc - planinc” (“every Bohinj native a mountaineer”),
- the highly trained mountain rescue service offers rapid professional assistance
for accident victims at all times,
- and finally – over the years members of this club have taken part in many very
successful expeditions to the famous mountain ranges of the world, and to
less well-known destinations too.
The Alpine Club owns and manages four mountain huts, all of which are located in
the Triglav range and are at the same time in the heart of the Triglav National Park,
which is Slovenia’s greatest natural treasure.
Mountain hut “Pod Bogatinom”
Enchanted by the beauties you will discover as you pass through Zlatorog’s kingdom,
and tired from walking, in the shelter of these huts you will find rest in a friendly
environment and gather new strength to continue your journey to your final destination.

Vogel is a tourist centre on the edge of the Triglav
National Park. A modern cable car carries you to
a height of 1,537 m above sea level, where a
wonderful view opens out below you. In winter
Vogel is a well-known high-mountain ski resort,
where a snowy idyll of untouched nature further
heightens your enjoyment of skiing, snowboarding or simply a panoramic cable car ride.
In summer Vogel sheds its white raiment and
dresses itself in livelier colours. Its many paths
and marked mountain trails are ideal for recreation, photography, enjoying the peace of the
high mountains and viewing mountain flora and
fauna.
Paragliding enthusiasts know Vogel as one of
the most beautiful jumping-off points.
And you will not leave Vogel hungry or thirsty.

Kobla is the only ski resort in Slovenia that is
accessible by train. Three ski lifts and three Tbar tows have a capacity of 5,700 skiers per
hour. The first ski lifts start on the outskirts
of Bohinjska Bistrica. In the last few years, the
ski centre has developed a new artificial snow
system with twenty artificial snow machines
that can provide the ski slopes with snow in
good weather conditions. Its 23 km of slopes
are appropriate for all kinds of skiers, especially for those that enjoy skiing on long and
fast trails. The Kozji Hrbet slope is lighted and
offers night skiing, and there are also 6 km of
cross-country routes and a sledging track.
There is also catering and tourist building with
accommodations on ski slope Ravne.
