SYNOPSIS

THE LOVE PUNCH
In new movie The Love Punch, Emma Thompson and Pierce Brosnan play a divorced couple who
come up with a plan to recover money stolen from them by robbing a diamond in France. The duo
go on a comical adventure, which requires them to car chase around the French capital, climb a
rock face on the Cote d'Azure and kidnap some Texans.
"Emma did all the driving," explained Joel Hopkins. In one scene, Emma Thompson and Pierce
Brosnan's characters go on a high-octane chase in a little red Citroen. "The part where the car goes
down the steps... [Emma Thompson] did the last 10 steps," explained Hopkins. "She also did the bit
where the car goes up on to some steps at an angle," he revealed.
"She was only supposed to go up three steps, but she went up four by accident – the car
was tilting much more than it should have been."
Thomson got a taste for the action, while the former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan was gritting
his teeth and holding on to the dashboard.
"She loved it," said Hopkins of Thompson's car chasing, "she got a real taste for it. She said
I want to do a full on action movie now. She was very game."
The Love Punch also sees the duo head down to the Cote D'Azur in their red car, where
they meet up with their old friends and accomplices played by Celia Imrie (Love & Marriage)
and Timothy Spall (Harry Potter).
"The day before we started shooting, I sent them all out for a lunch," explained
Hopkins, "we did a reading of the script and then I sent them out for a really nice boozy lunch, to
break the ice and build up that rapport.
"I was very keen for the main four to feel like a genuine old gang of friends."
However, filming got off to a false start, when Spall couldn't get into a wetsuit during a scene.
"I didn’t know Tim before the scene, so I was quite nervous with him," explained Hopkins.
"His wetsuit was too small and he was taking ages to come to set and I was like 'where’s Tim we’re
running out of time'. I went to his trailer and the poor chap was desperately trying to get into his
wetsuit. He put on a really brave face, but we ended up having to cut the arms, under the armpits
to loosen it. We were throwing talcum powder in, and he was a really good sport about it. There
had been a mix up in wardrobe and we couldn’t get a bigger size in time, so he suffered and it was
a very hot day as well. I sent him a large bottle of wine the next day," said Hopkins.
OVER DE CAST
OVER EMMA THOMPSON
Emma Thompson (born 15 April 1959) is a British actress, screenwriter and author. Cited as one of
the greatest British actresses of her generation, she is known for her portrayal of reticent women in
period dramas and literary adaptations, often playing haughty or matronly characters with a sense
of irony.
Born in Paddington, London to English actor Eric Thompson and Scottish actress Phyllida Law, she
was educated at Camden School for Girls and Newnham College, University of Cambridge, where
she became the first female member of the Footlights troupe. After appearing in several comedy
programmes, she first came to prominence in 1987 in two BBC TV series, Tutti Frutti and Fortunes
of War, winning the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress for her work in both. Her first film role was
opposite Jeff Goldblum in the 1989 romantic comedy The Tall Guy, and in the early 1990s she
frequently collaborated with then-husband actor and director Kenneth Branagh, appearing on stage
together in A Midsummer Night's Dream and King Lear and in films like Dead Again (1991), Peter's
Friends (1992) and Much Ado About Nothing (1993).
In 1992, Thompson won multiple acting awards, including an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award
for Best Actress, for her performance as the bourgeois lady Margaret Schlegel in the British drama
Howards End. In 1993, Thompson garnered dual Academy Award nominations, as Best Actress for
her roles as stately home housekeeper Miss Kenton opposite Anthony Hopkins in The Remains of
the Day and as Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of a campaigning lawyer Gareth Peirce
alongside Daniel Day-Lewis in In the Name of the Father. In 1995, Thompson scripted and starred in
Sense and Sensibility, a film adaptation of the Jane Austen novel of the same name, which earned
her an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a
Leading Role among other awards. Other notable film and television credits have included her role
as the eccentric professor Sybill Trelawney in the Harry Potter film series, Love Actually (2003),
Angels in America (2003), Nanny McPhee (2005), Stranger than Fiction (2006), Last Chance Harvey
(2008), An Education (2009), Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang (2010), Men in Black 3 (2012), Brave
(2012), and writer P. L. Travers in Saving Mr. Banks (2013), which earned her a BAFTA nomination.
Thompson met Kenneth Branagh in 1987 while filming Fortunes of War and married him two years
later. Dubbed a "golden couple" by the British media, the relationship received considerable press
interest until they announced their separation in September 1995. She married Greg Wise in 2003,
giving birth to a daughter, Gaia, in 1999. The family's permanent residence is in West Hampstead,
London, on the same road that Thompson lived in her youth. She has been outspoken on issues
such as religion, politics, the environment and human rights, and is a supporter of Greenpeace,
ambassador for the charity ActionAid, and patron of the Elton John AIDS Foundation and Refugee
Council. In 2012, Thompson authored The Further Tale of Peter Rabbit to commemorate the 110th
anniversary of the publication of Beatrix Potter's The Tale of Peter Rabbit.
