If this is a sample of what’s to come, we will be in for a very hot summer. But, the season is so short, let’s just enjoy it before it’s gone. May 2nd breakfast saw 47 members and 7 bikes. Dale went home $86.00 richer, Shirley T will enjoy her $10.00 gas card and Paul will dine on us at next breakfast. May 16th breakfast was attended by 41 members and 31 bikes shone in the parking lot. What a great sight. Beautiful weather brings out the best. We welcomed 2 new members, Hana who rides a BMW and John P who enjoys a ST1100. Once again, Ben and Margo struck it rich going home with the 50/50 pot of $88.50. Donna S won the gas card and Georges won the micro clothes. May 7th is set aside as National Female Ride Day, and once again I planned a ride for the ladies that I know who ride their own bike. I guess Mother Nature was a little put out, as she doesn’t ride, so rain was with us from the start to the finish. Sue C, Julie, a customer from where I work Shirley and myself decided to show our commitment and had a great ride, even if it was wet. Thanks ladies, hopefully we will have nicer weather next year. Just a reminder that June 6th breakfast will be at Smitty’s Restaurant in Burlington, arrival between 8:30 and 9:00 am and we have arranged to have our September 5th breakfast at The Galley Pump on Wentworth St. No. in Hamilton, same time for arrival. June 26th is our night to run the 50/50 draw at Welland County. The discounted price per person is $11.00 and must be paid in advance. If you aren’t sure you can make it, you can pay at the gate and I will try to greet you and get you the discount when you arrive, but no promises. Our charity this year will be Canadian Diabetes and we will present them with the money we raise at their Poker Run in August. I hope to see a good number of members there in support of a good cause. Thank you to everyone for their wonderful donations for our soldiers in Afghanistan. I took 5 very full boxes to Trenton on May 21st and hopefully they will arrive before they open Canada House and can be enjoyed during their open celebrations on July 1st. Our soldier Laurel is moving on and her replacement has promised to keep in touch with us. Thank you to Ron J for leading a ride at last breakfast, anyone else who would like to share your ride with others, please let me know and I will make the announcement at breakfast. It is always nice to have some options available to the members, as I can’t seem to get anyone to step up as a road captain. Until next we meet; Ride safe………… Lorraine XL+ Chosen Soldier It is so nice to have an individual who can contact us usually on the same day. Given several members donated cash for our project, advantage was taken of this speedy communication to ask her help to decide what should be purchased. The following is her reply: Personally I believe everyone would agree that she need not apologize for telling us what they would enjoy. This is the sort of message that makes our task easier and more satisfying in the knowledge we are fulfilling their longings for the comforts of home. The pictures below speak to the generosity of our membership! Hi, That's great that you're sending another package, it should arrive just in time for us to open Canada House (we're aiming for 1 July to cut the ribbon). The condiments would be a great addition to CH and will help to 'livin' up the food' from the DFAC. uhm... Ketchup - Heinz please BBQ sauce - Bulls Eyes has a Guinness flavoured one I think, or anything hickory/ garlic flavour, Salad dressing - ranch, creamy cucumber, Caesar, raspberry vinaigrette, or anything vinaigrette really (low cal if possible, the ladies are sick of "salad cream" and the guys don't really eat salad) There is a possibility that I will be moving to another camp in Kabul so just in case could I ask you to address the package to Captain Clint L (at the same address you use for me). He is one of the new Canadians here in KAIA and has agreed to be the POC for care packages for the Canadians. My fate is as of yet undetermined, but I should know by the end of the month. Mail is moving quickly now, so the package should only take 3-4 weeks and should be here in time for CH opening and BBQ =) Thank you so much for all the support! It's great to hear from home. I'm drafting another adventure story and trying to upload some photos to go with it so you should be receiving something by the end of the week. take care, Laurel After this message she was contacted to ask if they needed any more decks of cards to which she responded: Hi Again The decks of cards we're actually good, but other games would be fun so we have a selection. What about those weird ones where you have to do charades, or draw stuff, or even TWISTER... that's the best house warming present EVER!! Definitely good for a few laughs when the stress level is elevated and we need to let loose! This is not a shopping list by any means, just some ideas. Thanks again for all the support from the group!! Laurel Lorraine is hoping they get there by Canada Day There was a story on last night’s news regarding a number of NATO members being injured by a bomb. This is the group Laurel is attached to and raised questions in our minds. Before we could message her to ask about her well being she sent out a brief email titled “I’m safe”. She is OK and helping out her NATO comrades. Lorraine had further contact with her and she mentions what effect the recent bombing had on her personally. “My brain is a little scattered after yesterday's events, but I think we did receive 2 packages in the last set. I remember I split things up, food type stuff and other type stuff and brought it to the weekly hockey game for all to dig in =) It's funny, I'm trying so hard to remember, and I can't picture it right now... too preoccupied I guess, busy focusing on my soldiers and not so much on myself. I was not out on the road, but one of my soldiers was, she was driving one of the trucks. Physically, the injuries are not great she will recover fine but emotionally the driving team (made up of many nations) is pretty broken and everyone is pulling together to get through it.” Sadly it looks like we may lose contact with her as her assignment has changed, but she has promised to keep in touch with us in the future. Also she has given us a new contact person as per the highlighted passage above. Lorraine has delivered the latest batch of goody boxes (five in all) to Trenton on the 21st. There was some worry about her gaining access to the base because that was the day that Col. Parker was being repatriated. However there was no problem encountered and she was quickly on her way to Kingston. Breakfast at the Bistro Recently one of our breakfasts was held at the Bistro which is in the Burlington Seniors’ Centre. Every month, Joe V along with a group of volunteers provides breakfast to seniors. This program had caught the eye of the MP for Burlington who paid a visit to the facility for breakfast. He was very impressed how this program has helped improve the lives of the elderly in the area and issued an article to the local newspaper. It is nice to see people such as Joe who volunteer their time and energy to assist others, get recognition for their efforts. Kudos Joe!! Motorcycle Definition The recent purchase of one of our members (Bruce) of a Spider and an email containing the picture below, made the article in this month’s AMA magazine more interesting. The Federal Highway Administration in the US wants to attempt defining what a motorcycle is. Does it have two wheels, three wheels; are the wheels in line, is it open or enclosed? Do you sit astride it? Does it have a steering wheel or handlebars? Defining what constitutes a motorcycle has become important because many manufactures are exporting three wheeled vehicles including trucks to the US. A futuristic machine in Dubai (with thanks to Margo) The gist of this is to avoid the more stringent safety requirements for motor vehicles than for motorcycles. Their concerns about this change are obvious in nature. The International Organization for Standardization better know as ISO are in charge of VIN. The standardization for these is scheduled to be done this year, so they have a vested interest in this as well. The bottom line is the Federal Highway Administration wants to do is revise its definition of motorcycles and two and three wheeled vehicles to better separate motorcycles, mopeds and motor scooters. If anyone wishes to make comments send them to submissions@ama-cycle.org. Bunny and Margo’s BBQ They have invited any interested persons to come to their abode in Blenheim, ON for a get together. Some people will be arriving on Friday the 9th of July. On Saturday there will be rides in the local vicinity followed by a barbeque. They are going to supply the food.
