Hello to all the Retreads:
The calendar says it’s Spring. The riders
say…”Yes, it’s Spring, time to ride again.” But it
appears the higher being says…”Not yet!” But
we won’t despair because we know it will
happen real soon.
We thank our Springfield members as they have
brought in three new members. Great job.
Check the new member page and learn more
about them.

INSIDE THIS ISSUE
Dorothy has been working hard on the 30+
members, and, although we haven’t seen it yet,
we know it will be exceptional.
Again, we remind you of the upcoming rallies.
Be sure and check them all out in the
Newsletter, and PLEASE be sure and
preregister if you plan to attend any rallies.
They need to know the numbers when it is time
to order the food.
We remind you to pay your 2014 membership
dues.
Also, just a little request from
Wanda…..please be sure and print/write so she
can read it. She gets embarrassed if she has
misspelled a name, a number and so she would
really appreciate your attention to this matter.
She thanks you!!!
We hope to see as many of you as possible at
the upcoming rallies…so first one will be
Coffeyville….see you there!!
Ride Safe, God Bless You All.

According to the Department of Motor
Vehicles, in almost three-fourths of the
crashes
involving
motorcycles
and
automobiles, the other driver didn't see the
motorcycle until it was too late. So while a
black or leather image may be quite important
and automobile drivers are obliged to notice
the biker in the first place, the motorcyclist
can do his or her part by making themselves
as visible as possible.
This means headlights at all times and clear
signals, both turn and hand signals. But this
means dress too.
The upper body is the
most visible part, so consider bright colors
when choosing a jacket. If you must stay with
black or brown leather, consider a reflective
vest over top, especially at night. Consider
reflective surfaces and bright
colors for
helmets, like yellow or white. Some wellplaced
reflective stickers - on helmets,
gloves, pants, etc. - aren't a bad idea either.

Hello Fellow Retreads!
We had our breakfast meeting on February 8 with 27 members and one guest, Chuck McCarney,
present. We’re hoping Chuck will decide to join our group. The 50/50 drawing was split and won by
John Gilbert and Dorothy Crafton. That’s two months in a row for the Gilberts—we may have to
change the rules (hehe)! Cathy Schweer won the $8 breakfast. All the February birthdays were
recognized.
We are ecstatic to report that Colleen Howard (a.k.a. “Snappy”) was moved out of a regular hospital
room and into rehabilitation about three days ago. She is doing great. She has a long recovery
period ahead of her, but her ship is definitely sailing with the wind behind her. Mike reports that she
still needs our prayers. I’m hoping she will be recovered enough to come to the Spring Fling and just
sit and visit with all the people who love her. That’s the best medicine for the soul.
Winter 2014 in the Ozarks has completely grounded our Friendship Rides. In the five years we have
lived here, this is the first winter that we haven’t been able to ride at least every other week. We did
get in one or two short rides in early January, but nothing since. Wayne has taken advantage of this
time to do much needed maintenance on our bikes.
At this time, we have a small group planning to attend the April Fools Rally in Coffeyville, KS. We are
hoping the group gets bigger by the time we leave. When the roads get bare and the sun comes out,
I think the interest will peak.
We also have a sizeable group attending the International Rally in Branson the first weekend in May.
The Registration Form for the Spring Fling is out on the website and in newsletters each month. If
you haven’t registered yet, at least get your hotel or camping reservations made now.
If we can help you make reservations, or if you have any questions about the Spring Fling, please
give us a call at the number below.
Stay warm and safe,

SWLA Retreads
The South West Louisiana Retreads are catching up to date.
On February 6 the SWLA Retreads met for our monthly meeting at the Boiling Point. 25 were in
attendance. We discussed the rallies coming up and encouraged all to try to attend.
We have a Friendship ride scheduled for April 7-10 to the Kerrville, TX. Known as the Hill Country.
Decided to invite eligible friends to ride along.
March 6 the SWLA Retreads had another monthly meeting, this time at A Mazen Seafood
Restaurant. We had 20 members, signed up a new member, Don Young, and had the pleasure of a
visitor who left with a membership application. Twenty not so responsible adults in one room. We
were having a good time and everyone was in the mood to visit. It is hard to leave but 3:30 does
come more than once a day in the non-military clock world and some of us have to still go to work.
We kicked around changing the name of our rally this year but decided to leave it as South West
Louisiana State Rally. We are a simple folk. Our rally will be October 2, 3 & 4 at Holbrook Park.
RIDING IN THE HILL COUNTRY IS COMING UP
This Friendship ride will leave April 7 at 7:30 am from Harry’s on 378 in Moss Bluff. We will make a
stop at Pit Grill in Sulphur on 27 to gather folks as we leave town. We have about a 400 mile ride on
Monday and Thursday. We will spend 3 nights in the Kerrville area and return Thursday April 10.
That will give us 2 full days of riding and socializing. I understand Tuesday and Wednesday will cover
200 to 250 each day. There is more than riding to do in the area. Some may wish to shop. We are
encouraging 2 wheeling, 3 wheeling and even cages.
We would like to invite ALL RETREADS and their interested friends to come ride with us. If you are
interested please call me at 337-515-2643 so we will be looking for you. That is my cell phone
number -- just leave a message if I don’t answer. I will get back to you. So now all you Gateway
Retreads are welcome to join us.
Accommodations are:
Comfort Inn and Suites
2001 Sidney Baker Street
Kerrville, TX 78028
Hotel Phone # 830-792-7700
Comfort Inn and Suites will be changing names as of April 6 to Quality Inn. So by the time we get
there we will need to look for a Quality Inn sign or a Comfort Inn and Suites sign.

If you are planning to be there for the entire trip you will need to book reservations for April 7, 8 & 9 as
we will be leaving on the morning of the 10th. Who knows Paul and Carolyn Corbello will already be
there and will stay after we are gone.
There are other hotels in the area, but this is the one most of us are planning to stay at. There are
many camping areas also. The Corbello’s are camping. We will have a roster of whom and where
everyone is and contact numbers so we can meet for rides, eats & etc. We will be working on this list
up until we leave so it is just slide on in.
Look for the SWLA Retread Rally Flyer and information on Sam Houston Jones State Park. Holbrook
Park is a Parish Park and sites are rented on a first come first serve as of now. Unless people get
there early in the week for setting up, there may not be a site available and I do not know how much
help I can give on this to stretch, bend and break their rules. They are hoping to get a site going that
will allow for reservations but I do not know when this will happen. Holbrook has 13 or 14 camper
spots with water and electricity and an on-site dump station. Sam Houston Jones State Park has
camper spots that can be reserved, cabins and a lodge. There are 2 handicap camper spots at Sam
Houston and 2 handicap cabins at Sam Houston.

Springfield, Mo Retread News
We had 23 at our March meeting. We met at Bric’s Belgium Waffle House in Ozark, MO. It was Ice
Cold as usual. We are getting ready this evening for Ice and snow.
We talked about the upcoming Coffeeville, KS Rally; the International Rally in Branson, MO; and the
Spring Fling in Mt. View, AR
We also have a group ride to Illinois planned for May 29 - June 1. The agenda is to meet at the Nixa,
Mo McDonalds. We'll leave at 8am and ride to Marion, Illinois on that Thursday. On Friday, ride
some pretty areas and enjoy some good food. Maybe take in a Music Show that night - admission is
$5.00 for the show. Saturday we'll ride to the Cave In Rock State Park and eat fish. At 6Pm attend
Micro Mini Sprint Car Races ($10.00 cost of admission). Then Sunday ride back to Springfield, Mo
We will be leaving on daily rides around 8 am. If anyone is Interested in going on the ride, contact
Dale Hall 417-839-3298 Motel Reservations can be made at the America’s Best Inn in Marion, Ill
(618)997-1351 -- $45.00 plus tax for two Queens or one King Bed. They also have a heated
swimming pool. Be sure to tell them you are with Dale Halls Group to try to get this rate.
We are now having Scratch off lotto tickets for Door Prize drawings. We all seem to enjoy the chance
to win a little bigger prize. So far only two free ticket Winners! HE! HE! HE!
Springfield had cards made up for all members, to give out to try to get new members to join. We
need new members bad. With times as they are, it seems hard to get new people interested in
joining.
I’m sure all the groups are having this problem. We must all try real hard to gain members or we will
soon dwindle to no riding. Who wants to join a Motorcycle Group that does not ride? Lots of GWRRA
CHAPTERS have quit for the same reason - no new members - no ride. Help preserve the Retreads
for your children. Go sign up some riders and always make them feel a part of the group.

We had 14 present for February 8 Retread meeting. We did not have any visitors or any
anniversaries or birthdays. We had a good meal and made plans for cabin fever that we always have
every year. We want to thank Connie and Sandy for taking care of the tickets. The people who
donated were Connie, Rose, Mary, Ruth, Marvin and Sandy. The winners were Marvin, Jim Leach,
Rose, Jim and Paul. Wilbur Hickey won the buffet donated by Dottie's.

We had our cabin fever at Randy's Road Kill in Rolla, Missouri. We had a good turnout with lots of
Retreads®, friends, neighbors and family and lots of good food. The weather was a lot better than it
had been. Everyone had a good time. We were glad to have Jerry and Helen all the way from
Springfield, Missouri.

Mary had a little bad luck. She fell on the ice and broke her arm on March 2. That was the night when
MODOT said stay off of the highways on account of the black ice. We went to Jefferson City to the
emergency room. They set Mary's arm. We came back about midnight, only three or four cars all the
way from Jeff city to Owensville. She had surgery on 7 March, so we did not go to the meeting on
March 8. We called LES and Rose and they took care of the meeting. Thanks to Les and Rose for
that. We want thank all of the retreads for the nice cards and calls that Mary received.

My Fellow Retreads® - the time has come for me to say...
HURRY UP SPRING -- WE NEEEEED YOU NOW - NOT IN A FEW MONTHS...
Sorry about the shouting but I just had to get that off my chest. I am going "crazy" with all the cold
weather. Hopefully next week will be beautiful and warmer for the Coffeyville Rally. See you all
there.
Starting this month we are honoring our Retread Members in the Gateway Region that have been
members for 30 years or more. We have quit a few. Based on information provided by the members
themselves, I am doing a small write up on each. As I get the information from the member(s), I am
posting their "story" on the website http://gatewayregionalretreads.com. On the Home Page there
is a "Hall of Fame" button that will take you to the list of Retread Member/Couples. Click on their
name(s), and you can read their story. Also on the Pictures page, there will be four members/couples
posted each month. On the next for pages of this newsletter (following my notes), are the first four of
our Hall of Famers.
Due to printing restrictions, we can only publish a few of the stories each month in our printed
newsletter. So each printed newsletter will have only four or so stories. However, if you attend the
International Rally in Branson and/or the Spring Fling Rally in Mt. View, I will have a book with all the
stories to date and everyone is encouraged to come see our "Hall of Fame" members.
If any of your chapters go on rides or attend events, try to get one of the passengers to bring a
camera and take pictures along the way and at your stops. Then have them download to a computer
and email the pictures to me along with the date, place and number of bikes/people for a ride report.
I will then post them to our Picture slideshows for all to enjoy. If anyone needs help in downloading
their files from their camera - give me a call and I'll try to help you do that.
Hope to see you all at the upcoming rallies -- Coffeyville, Branson & Mt. View. Be sure to take a look
at our Hall of Fame book.

Retreads® Hall of Fame
Al and Lois Bacon
Albert, or Al as all of the Retreads® call him, and Lois have been Retreads® members for 34 years.
They joined as a couple in 1980. They have been married for 62 years and they have two kids, three
Grandchildren and six Great Grandchildren. Al served in the Army for 3 1/2 years. After the service
he worked for T.W.A.
Over the years they have owned five motorcycles - four of which were ridden more than 100,000
miles (each). Al was strictly a Honda man and rode motorcycle for 44 years. Although Al and Lois no
longer ride, they are very active in the Retreads® since they are the Kansas State Reps for the
Gateway Region.
Per Al and Lois, there wasn't a single "best trip" on motorcycle - they felt they ALL were good across
the country. However, their longest trip was to Nova Scotia, Canada. They have traveled all of the
lower 48 states and 9 Canadian Provinces.
Both Al and Lois have activities other than riding motorcycles. Al loves woodworking and Lois is into
spending Al's money. When asked for any advice they would give to other Retreads®, they said:
"Just be safe and enjoy riding your motorcycles -- and go to as many states as you can."
Page 14
Bill and Janice Galloway
Bill & Janice Galloway have been Retreads® for 39 years. They joined the Retreads® in 1982. They
have also been married for 39 years and currently live in Joplin, MO. They have two Children, two
Grandchildren and on Great Grandchild.
Bill served two years in the Army. They have owned seven motorcycles over the years but currently
do not ride. Four of the motorcycles were Harleys and three Hondas. Bill began riding in 1974.
They have made many trips over the years, Three to Ruidoso, NM; six to Sturgis, SD; four to
California and ten to Colorado. Their longest trip was to Northeast Canada. Their trip to Maine was
their worse trip. They have traveled to 46 states of the contiguous states.
Although Bill & Janice no longer ride, they are still very active in the Retread organization as Area
Reps for Joplin, MO. and attend rallies and functions throughout the Gateway Region,
Their advice to other Retreads® on life, riding and marriage is"
"ENJOY"
Page 15
Roger & Betty Adams
Roger and Betty Adams are from Cottage, MO. and have been Retreads® for 37 years. They have
been married for 55 years. They had four children, nine Grandchildren and twelve GreatGrandchildren.
Roger served in the Marines for 6 years. Roger worked as a Dynamite Line Forman for the Hercules
Powder Company.
Over the years they have owned 11 motorcycles - 1 Indian and 10 Hondas. They currently ride a
Honda Trike. Roger started riding back in 1971.
Roger & Betty feel that their "Best Trip" was to Niagara Falls, Canada. Their longest trip was to the
Glacier National Park. They say they took "the long way". Over all, they have traveled to 32 of the 48
contiguous states and Canada.
When not riding the motorcycle, Roger is a member of the Masonic Lodge - Scottish Rites and goes
to the YMCA 5 mornings a week. His hobbies are woodcarving and coin collecting.
Roger and Betty have some advice on:
"Life -- Keep it simple."
"Riding -- Keep it safe."
"Marriage - Love, trust and respect your partner."
Page 16
Ron & Merna Tabor.
Ron & Merna Tabor from Cotter, AR., have been Retreads® members for 34 years. They joined in
1981. They have been married for 57 years and have 4 children, 10 Grandchildren, 2 Step
Grandchildren, 8 Great Grandchildren and 2 Step Great Grandchildren. Needless to say,
Thanksgiving at the Tabors is a noisy place.
Before retirement, Ron was a Service Tech for Sears and Merna worked in a factory. Over the years
Ron has had (count them) 22 motorcycles and Merna has had 11 motorcycles. They currently have
3 motorcycles - 2006 Honda Goldwing, a Yamaha Virago and a Yamaha Road Star. Ron began
riding at the ages of 18 and Merna was 19 when set began riding her own motorcycle.
They say their best trip was either Washington or Maine - but that all the trips are better than working.
Their trip to Washington state was their longest - 6400 miles. They have traveled the 48 contiguous
states and parts of Canada.
Other than motorcycle riding, Ron and Merna have a number of activities and hobbies that keep them
going a lot. They like to ride ATVs, go camping, fishing and ride bicycles.
Ron has some advice to all Retreaders about life, riding and marriage .. it is:
"Enjoy it while you can..."
Ron also says about himself and Merna...
"Too old to work
Too young to die
So we go riding, just Mom and I"
