May 18th - Waitakere Primary School
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Week 3
Tena koutou
Our winter sports teams are all organised and their competitions underway. The weather has
been fabulous for practices – long may it last. My thanks to Jo Easto and Penny Jackson for
taking over the organisation of basketball and netball this year. It is a big task and we appreciate
all the work Jayne Kearney has done over the years in establishing our school’s presence in these
competitions. Don’t hesitate to contact either Jo or Penny if you have queries about the teams or
organisation.
One of the great joys in being a teacher is seeing your students mature and succeed in their
educational journeys and lives. We often are visited by ex-pupils who delight in sharing their
successes at high school. On Monday a group of our Year 7 and 8 students were privileged to see
the Waitakere College production of the Wizard of Oz – it was a very polished performance with
many of our former pupils featuring in the show. Glory Christina was in one of the leading roles as
the Good Witch and our very talented dancers Jake Starrs, Jemma Van Sitter, Olivia Moir, Bronte
Tantau and Luella Normington were in the dance crew – Jake and Jemma in leading roles.
We are all looking forward to our Literacy evening tomorrow night with Wayne Mills. It starts at
6.30pm and will be held in our school hall.
Gates
You may have noticed that we now have a farm gate over the driveway up to our school hall. To
keep our students safe this gate is to remain closed – only staff can use it to access the carpark
and school. All teachers have talked to students about the purpose of the gate and that they have
to use the dental clinic exit, front of office exit or swimming pool path exit when entering or leaving
our grounds. I personally observed a student informing her parent about this yesterday – fantastic!
Our thanks to Adrienne Hansen for organising the donation of the gate from Western ITM and to
Shane Dwyer for installing it.
Board of Trustees Nominations due this Friday.
Tena koutou katoa,
Our school is lucky to have a hard working team of passionate parents on its board. We value
having a well rounded friendly group with a diverse set of skills, experience and perspectives.
Your current parent representatives and their areas of expertise are
Stephen Bishop – Property management & Council regulations
Jude Taylor – Local Police Officer
Scott Hindman – Media & Te Ao Maori
Wade Hansen (standing again) – Legal advice
Adrienne Hansen (standing again) – Property, building
Mike Allen (retiring) – Accounting and Chairperson.
As it is important to keep a level of experience on the board, we have a staggered election
process.
There are three places open in the next elections, and so far we have only received nominations
from our two incumbents.
In this round we are especially keen on attracting someone with skills and experience around
Information Technology, Computing, Accounting and Finance. Your experience as a parent and
community member are also invaluable.
If you have skills to offer and have an interest in getting involved with the governance of your
child’s school, please consider throwing your hat in the ring.
Nominations close midday Friday 20th May.
Scott Hindman.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Would you like to earn some more money and have a cultural experience at
the same time?
We are desperately short of homestays for our Korean students.
A large group of both Korean teachers and students are coming 24 July—17 August.
We need homestays for the teachers for one week and for the students 3 weeks.
Please contact Wendy at 027 473 8343 or wendymelles@gmail.com if you can help or know
anyone that could.

BOOK CHARACTER DAY
Wow! lots of amazing book characters showed up at our parade today. There was a cat walk where all the classes
(and the teachers) got up and showed off their costumes.
The amount of $525.80 was
raised which is going
towards a new senior
playground.
Thank you to everyone who
got into the spirit of the day.
Scholastic Book Fair
We are holding another of our ever popular Book Fairs in the library this week.
This event is aimed at giving the students a chance to buy a book for
themselves, or donate one for the library.
It also ties in with our guest speaker Wayne Mills visiting our school tonight
Wednesday 18 May at 6:30pm, all welcome.
TERM 2 SHOW – Wednesday
8 June
I am really excited to announce
that the Rhythm Interactive
team are visiting us this term to
inspire us with rhythm! Their
shows are always highly
engaging, 100% interactive and
geared to all student age groups and levels. Each student is given an African
styled hand drum to play along with during the show. African drums are
among the first instruments used on our planet and the Rhythm Interactive
team combine these ancient instruments with modern technologies such as
looping stations. They share their unique teaching methods such as “if you
can say it you can play it” to demonstrate how students can learn rhythm,
music, singing and dance in a fun way. This is an unmissable show! Cost per
student is $5 and complimentary to those who have paid school donations.
School Math-a-thon
This term we are holding a Math-a-thon to raise funds for new maths
equipment and games in classrooms. A Math-a-thon is a great way
to boost your child’s instant recall of basic facts and is an
opportunity for your child to support their school by fundraising for
this worthwhile project.
On Monday 30 May (week 5) classroom teachers will be sending
home the first of 3 sheets of basic facts to be used for practising.
Attached to this will be a sponsorship form. Time will be given at
school to practise these basic facts and it is expected that your child
will learn these at home to be well prepared for the Competition
Day. There will be a class Pizza Party for the class that raises the
most money.
Math-a-thon Competition Day:
Thursday 23 June 2016 Week 8, Term 2
Money Due back at School Day:
Thursday 7 July 2016 Week 10, Term 2
Thank you for your support with this event. Please get as many
family, friends and neighbours involved in the sponsorship. We look
forward to choosing the equipment and games for our classrooms.
The Maths Team
Waitakere Primary now has a Facebook page which will be up and running on Monday 23rd May. Please join
our school page for regular updates. You can find us at www.facebook.com/WaitakerePrimary or by searching
‘Waitakere Primary’ on Facebook. This is a forum for us to share information about up and coming events, reminders
and updates, school celebrations and successes. If you have any questions regarding your child or a class programme, then these are to be directed
as normal to your classroom teacher. For assistance or for questions about stationery and fees, please make contact with the school office.
What is a digital footprint?
WasteWise -Reducing our footprint
Kids not eating fruit?
It’s much more appealing when it’s ready-to-eat
than whole. Cut apples into bite-sized pieces,
slice oranges and peel mandarins. To stop fruit
turning brown, squeeze a little lemon juice on
top.
NETSAFE TIPS
Your digital footprint is the trail of ‘electronic
breadcrumbs’ you leave behind you as you
use the internet. It can include the websites
you visit, the photos you upload and
your interactions with other users on
social networks.
Read more about how to limit what is available about you online and how
to discuss with children: https://www.netsafe.org.nz/what-is-a-digitalfootprint/ A short article with a lot of information packed in for parents!
Norwest Zone Orienteering Results
The Kumeu Showground courses provided a welcome challenge for all of our orienteering teams. The courses were fast and required good map
reading and navigation skills. Out of our 7 orienteering teams we had 4 teams and one individual runner go through to the Inter-zone orienteering
competition. The Inter-zone qualifiers results are listed below. Congratulations to all those who took part! And many thanks to Debbie and Allen for
helping with guidance and supervision.

Soccer
The Year 7&8 boys’ and girls’ soccer teams will be heading ‘up the road’ to play Taupaki School this Friday. This will be a useful soccer match for all
in the lead up to the Norwest Zone competitions next week. Kick-off on Friday is at 1:40pm.
Basketball
The Under 13s A-team played an all-girl rep team last week. A tough game that was super exciting and even through-out however Waitakere won
25-20. Well done team!
