Q. What is changing with the size of the newspaper? A. We are moving to a slightly narrower newsprint roll that will result in narrower pages. This change will require an adjustment to the width of your ads in the main body of the newspapers, as well as the classified and tab sections. Q. When is this page size conversion planned? A. The page size conversion is planned for Tuesday, July 7, 2009. At that time, all the sections will be converted to the new size. Q. Does that mean I have to change the size of the ads I submit to The Miami Herald? A. Yes. Please begin submitting your ads based on the new specifications for publication on July 7th and thereafter. Please remember to time your deadlines and materials submission to correlate with any publication on or after July 7th. Q. How much are page size and column widths changing? A. The width of the page is changing slightly, to 11 inches. The image size will be 10” x 21”. Q. Why are the page size and column widths changing? A. Page size is changing to conform more closely to industry standards dictated by the marketplace. Q. Will there be any changes to the El Nuevo Herald page or column widths? A. Yes, El Nuevo Herald will change to the same specifications as The Miami Herald. Q. What is the output resolution and line screen required for the newspaper? A. The Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald output paginated pages at 1200 dpi and 100-line screen. Q. Why do photos and tinted screens look different in the paper as compared to on my monitor? A. Your monitor displays colors by illuminating pixels with varying amounts of red, green and blue. Colors printed on newsprint are formed by light reflecting from the paper through cyan, magenta, yellow and black. These differences, along with other factors such as lighting conditions and variations among monitor manufacturers, affect the appearance of colors. We recommend that you use the settings and values in this guide for dot gain and color adjustments when creating photos and ads to run in the paper. Q. Can I submit ads created on a PC? A. Yes, but only as an Acrobat PDF file with fully embedded fonts, and CMYK or grayscale color format. Q. How do I transmit electronic files to The Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald? A. Visit our website, http://addesk.miamiherald.com for details on ad delivery options. You can also contact our digital delivery team at 305-376-2947 or your advertising representative. Q. What is dot gain? A. Dot gain is an increase in the size of the halftone dots, mainly caused by ink spreading (typically by 30%) on newsprint. Q. Are classified and tabloid section page and column widths also changing? A. Yes, classified columns will be moving from ten columns per page to six columns per page, and column widths will be increasing. Tab sections will also be moving to a six-column format. Please refer to column width table on page 6. Q. Will the new sizes affect my advertising rates? A. No, ad rates will remain the same. Q. How do I set up and create PDF files to output correctly on The Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald system? A. Specific instructions and Distiller job options are detailed at the website http://addesk.miamiherald.com. It is critical to use Distiller’s job options for newspaper printing before creating the PDF file. Q. Why can I use only Postscript Type 1 fonts? A. These fonts are ideal for printed reproduction.
