Reflections From Our Schools THE NEWSLETTER OF THE MOUNT SINAI UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT Reflections From Our Schools THE NEWSLETTER OF THE MOUNT SINAI UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT Volume 45 Issue 3 SPRING 2013 MOUNT SINAI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Grades K – 4 Dr. John Gentilcore, Principal Ms. Linda Chase, Assistant Principal Junior Achievement Program O nce again our second grade students participated in the Junior Achievement partnership program with students from the High School parenting class. The Junior Achievement curriculum explores the interdependent roles of workers in a community, the work they perform, and how communities work. The high school students are responsible for teaching a series of five fun and interactive lessons. Each lesson is activity-based, reinforcing important concepts through hands-on learning. The AHA partners led the fourth graders in a discussion of how to handle these situations should they arise. In March, the more complex topic of substance abuse will be addressed. Finally, in May, the culminating activity will be a joint Field Day – which is always thoroughly enjoyed by all! Mrs. Samson’s Second Graders with MSHS Junior Achievement partner. MSHS Athletes Helping Athletes On January 14, the MSHS Athletes Helping Athletes group came to the elementary school for their second visit with the fourth grade classes. During this session, student athletes talked about sportsmanship and their personal experiences with athletes who demonstrated poor sportsmanship. MOUNT SINAI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Elementary Band T Martin Luther King Jr. Day he 4th grade band under the direction of Mr. Bobby Moriarty is off to a great start this year! They are currently rehearsing the exciting and mysterious "Bermuda Triangle," the classic "1812 Overture," and the comically entertaining "Concerto for Crash Cymbals." Come join the band on May 15 and 16 at 7:30 in the high school auditorium for a wonderful night of beautiful music! Book Fair During the week of January 28, Mount Sinai Elementary School students were transported to Room 307 which had been transformed into a Wacky Wizard’s Laboratory for the PTO Annual Book Fair. “Pictured” here are Cole Croston, John Hull and Lawrence Giarrizzo enjoying one of the many terrific selections. Thank you to all the PTO parents who helped each student get just the right book! Here Johnny Jongebloed is hard at work completing his project. Great job, John! Boys and girls in Mrs. Morris’ First Grade class recently learned about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and how he taught us that even though we are different on the outside we all alike on the inside. Parent Reading Ms. Wagner visited with Mrs. T Murphy’s class and read them a story about Valentine’s Day. Her son, Brenden enjoyed the treat along with the rest of the class. Mount Sinai Mirror 2 MOUNT SINAI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Special Delivery M rs. Matz’s 4th grade class and Mrs. Morris’ 1st grade class have teamed up as “buddies” once again this year! The classes meet together once a month to create projects that align with the curriculum. The fourth graders act as role models to their 1st grade buddies assisting them with their projects. For Valentine’s Day, the 4th graders surprised the 1st graders by writing their buddy a friendly letter and displaying it on a bulletin board that reads “Special Delivery…” Mrs. Morris’ class was so excited to walk down to the 4th grade hallway and pull their letter right off the bulletin board! Mrs. Matz’s class is now anxiously awaiting letters in response! Character Education T he Character Education Committee would like to share a new link that was recently added to both the Parent Resources and Character Education pages of the elementary website. With the help of some parents in our community, a list was compiled of community service ideas for children. Entitled “Random Acts of Kindness”, parents and children can choose activiises and projects that interest them. Some examples are picking up garbage in your neighborhood, collecting magazines to donate to a local hospital or senior center, donating gently used clothing to a local shelter, or collecting books to bring to a children’s hospital. Kicked off in February, children have brought in hearts highlighting the many ways they have helped others by being kind! Spelling Bee F or the second year in a row, elementary students participated in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. In December, every class held their own spell-off. On January 8, each grade level's classroom winners competed before their parents (and a distinguished panel of judges - Mrs. Chase and Mr. LaBianca) to determine the grade level "champ"! Our fourth grade winner, Dillon Balroop, went on to compete in the regional bee which was held on Sunday, February 24, 2013 at Hofstra University. Congratulations to all of our students for their outstanding achievement! Dillon's winning word - "flirtatious"! (Spelling Bee Continued on pg. 5) Mount Sinai Mirror 4 MOUNT SINAI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (Spelling Bee Continued fm pg. 4) As students listened to the music of Mozart, Strauss, Rossini, and other classical greats; paper bags, colorful rods, and simple boxes were magically transformed into puppets who told these tales. Students and adults alike were enthralled by this terrific production and thank the PTO for their generosity in funding this program! O Peter and the Wolf n January 15th, the Mount Sinai Elementary School had the incredible honor of hosting the Long Island Philharmonic Woodwind Quartet. This talented group of musicians along with a professional mime brought the classic story of Peter and the Wolf to life through Prokofiev's delightful music. As the musicians played, the mime "told" the tale, introducing the instruments and engaging students in the story. Thank you to Friends of the Arts for sponsoring this wonderful program! Dillon BalroopA top 30 Spelling Bee Finalist at Hofstra Puppet Show O n February 6, Mount Sinai Elementary School students were visited by Theatreworks USA. With a giant Pink Elephant acting as host, Rudyard Kipling’s classic stories How the Elephant Got HisTrunk (also known as The Elephant’s Child) and How the Camel Got His Hump came to life in a large-scale puppet extravaganza. Mount Sinai Mirror 5 MOUNT SINAI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Save a Pet Over the last several months, with hurricanes and blizzards, students at the elementary school have been especially busy with projects that have helped families, children – and animals in need. Students collected food for pantries, donated mittens and hats to shelters, provided cleaning supplies to victims of Hurricane Sandy, and collected change for both Save-a-Pet and the ASPCA, among many other community service projects. Choral Students Choral Students Catch A Kid December January Students from Mrs. Scher’s class who helped with the Save-a-Pet project. T Chorus he fourth grade chorus performed their annual Winter concerts in December. They performed in school for their fellow students and their teachers, and in the evening for all of their family members. Their program consisted of The Time of the Year, Light the Candles, and Let it Snow! They did a wonderful job, providing a very energetic performance. The 3rd and 4th grade chorus will perform again on May 15 and 16 at the high school singing, This Old Man, If I Only Had A Brain among others. Mount Sinai Mirror 6 MOUNT SINAI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 100th Day of School F or our One Hundredth Day of School activity, the boys and girls in Mrs. Style’s class were asked to brainstorm 100 reasons why they love school and second grade! Each student came up with several statements that were written on a heart and displayed on our bulletin board to form the number 100. The students wrote about different academic subjects they enjoy, about making and meeting new friends, going out to play for recess and many other activities that second graders do every day. On Monday, March 4th, the 100th Day, the students were greeted with a 100th Day sticker and completed a morning work math puzzle that said Happy One Hundredth Day of School. They also read poems, listened to a story and reviewed the project they completed over the winter break that included collecting sets of one hundred items. It was a wonderful day of fun and learning! Sinai Middle School is proud to announce that two of their fifth grade students, Matthew Campo and Evan Matias placed in the NYS Youth Wrestling Championships on March 2nd at Bay Shore High School. The two wrestlers endured a grueling tournament competing against kids representing all regions of New York State, where Mathias placed 3rd at 70 lbs. and Campo placed 4th at 85 lbs. The wrestlers qualified for the NYS Championships after Campo placed 1st and Matias placed 2nd in the Suffolk County Championships two weeks prior. Congratulations to our student athletes for their hard work and accomplishments. Placed at the NYS Youth Wrestling tournament: Evan Matias – 3rd place – NYS kid wrestling tournament Matt Campo – 4th place – NYS kid wrestling tournament Mount Sinai Mirror 9 MOUNT SINAI MIDDLE SCHOOL Regional Scripps Spelling Bee at Hofstra University S eventh grade student Tatianna Spotorno represented Mount Sinai at the Hofstra Long Island Regional Scripps Spelling Bee on Sunday, February 24. Tatianna, champion of the middle school’s spelling bee held on January 10, went on to compete with over 100 students, also local spelling bee champions, to vie for the Long Island Champion title and progress to the National Bee in Washington, D.C. A big “Congratulations!” is extended to Tatianna, who placed amongst the top twenty out of the 103 total students in Sunday’s competition. Our clubs requested fun, unique Band-Aids that would help brighten the day of children facing unfortunate situations. The club members watched an inspiring video about an eight year old child, from Ohio, who was suffering from cancer. This child had a very endearing personality. During the interview, she was asked what would make her day to day hospital treatments better. She requested the fun Band-Aids. An entire community came together and started a “Fun Band-Aid Drive.” The club members were motivated by this video and wanted to start our own collection to help children similar to Katie. They understood that something so simple such as a Band-Aid would help brighten the day of a sick child. The students’ enthusiasm made this drive a true success. They filled the donation box with 148 BandAid boxes… that is over $1036 worth of Band-Aids! Club member Victoria Samour stated, “It makes me feel very happy to help others because I know I am making a difference.” This drive was a wonderful experience for both the children at Stony Brook Hospital, as well as the students of Mount Sinai Middle School! We will continue with this drive again next year. Tatianna (middle) poses with News 12’s Jill Wagner (left), and Spelling Bee Head Judge, Hofstra University’s Writing Center Director, Carol Clark Pepper (right). Fun Band-Aid Drive During the weeks of February 4th through February 14th, The Mount Sinai Community Outreach and Community Service Clubs held their first “Fun BandAid Drive.” Mrs. Thode and Ms. Allocca, along with 62 club members, helped organize this event. They collected character Band-Aids such as Elmo, Mickey Mouse, Scooby-Doo, Angry Birds, and many others. Proceeds were donated to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. Mount Sinai Mirror 10 MOUNT SINAI MIDDLE SCHOOL T COLORS OF LONG ISLAND Mount Sinai Middle School his year James Gomez, Tatianna Spotorno, Samantha Valenti, and Claire Cai have been selected to represent Mount Sinai Middle School in the annual art exhibit at the Long Island Museum: Colors of Long Island, Student Expressions. A collaboration of work will be displayed from K-12 ranging in mediums, subjects, and overall creativity. Our student’s composition focused on portrait and perspective – two challenging and significant artistic approaches that continue to present themselves in the art world today. All are welcome to attend this exhibit and support our amazing artists as well as others from Suffolk and Nassau County Long Island. Great Job and I will see you there! Jacqueline Menna, Caleigh Dolese, Rachel Menna, Alyssa Stein, and Gillian Dana Mount Sinai Mirror 13 MOUNT SINAI HIGH SCHOOL Former NBA Hoopster Visits Mount Sinai Chris Herren, a former high school, college and professional basketball player from Fall River, Massachusetts visited with Mount Sinai High School students to share his unbelievable story of substance abuse and journey to sobriety. While at Durfee High School, Mr. Herren scored 2,073 career points and was named The Boston Globe and Gatorade Player of the Year. A McDonald’s All-American, Chris accepted a full basketball scholarship to Boston College. Unfortunately, during his first game Chris sustained a season ending injury when he fell to the hardwood floor and broke his wrist. Sidelined by his injury, Chris was unable to participate in basketball activities and suddenly had a lot of free time on his hands. Unfortunately, Chris started making decisions that would jeopardize his college career and overall health. He began using alcohol and cocaine regularly and failed several National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) mandated drug tests. As a result, Boston College revoked his scholarship and Chris decided to leave Boston College. Shortly after departing Boston College, legendary coach Jerry Tarkanian offered Chris a second chance to play college basketball at Fresno State University. Chris went on to lead the nation in assists and steals. Unfortunately, Chris’ issues with alcohol and cocaine escalated to oxycodone and other pain management medications. The Denver Nuggets selected Chris in the second round of the 1999 National Basketball Draft. After playing in 45 games in his rookie year with the Nuggets, Chris was traded to his hometown Boston Celtics. Chris sustained another season ending injury and was eventually released by the Celtics. Subsequently, Chris went on to play professional basketball overseas in five countries: Italy, Poland, Turkey, China and Iran. While Chris’ basketball accolades are noteworthy and impressive, his struggles with substance abuse, and eventual sobriety, are the theme of his message to students. Chris explained to students how his addiction to alcohol, cocaine, oxycodone and eventually heroin took control of his life. Chris shared, “I remember preparing for a game while playing for the Celtics and my oxy dealer called and said he was stuck in traffic and wouldn’t be able to get to the Boston Garden before game time. I told him he had better hurry up because I am not playing unless I get my oxies. There I am in my Celtic warm-ups standing on the street corner in front of the Boston Garden in the rain waiting for my dealer to show up. He showed up just in time. I had my drugs and was able to play in the game that night. If I didn’t get my fix, I wouldn’t have been able to play that night. In fact, since my early days at Boston College, I didn’t play many games sober.” While in Istanbul, Turkey, Chris explained he was earning fifty thousand dollars per month in cash playing basketball and spending twenty-five thousand a month on black tar heroin. His need for heroin was stronger than the risk of going to jail or dying. Chris shared many of his experiences with our students, the impact of his substance abuse on his family and career were obvious. After several visits to residential rehabilitation centers and the support of his family and friends, Mr. Herren has been alcohol and drug-free since August 1, 2008. In June of 2009, Chris launched “Hoop Dreams with Chris Herren,” a basketball player development program which offers training, camps and clinics to top basketball prospects in the New England area. Off the court, he continues to share his story with audiences with the hope of reaching just one person and making a difference in his/her life. To support his vision, he founded “The Herren Project,” a non-for profit organization dedicated to providing assistance to families affected by addiction. He is also the subject of an ESPN documentary entitled, “Unguarded.” As one student shared, “Mr. Herren did an amazing job confessing his life story. As I listened to Mr. Herren’s story, it caused me to reflect on my personal goals; who I want to be and where I want to go. Since he was able to overcome such a dark obstacle…I can challenge myself to become something so much greater and be thankful for the opportunity I have to achieve greatness.” Mount Sinai Mirror 14 MOUNT SINAI HIGH SCHOOL FBLA We are very proud of all our members that competed. This will be the first time that our chapter will go to the state competition in April. We want to wish the following members good luck and we look forward to hearing how well they perform: Christopher Dallao, Jeremy Kisten and Su Yang. The Mount Sinai Future Business Leaders of America Chapter (FBLA) worked during the months of December and January preparing for the Spring District Competition, which was held on Friday, January 25, at Molloy College. The competition offered twenty-two written exams and six speaking events. We were so proud to have nineteen members compete. Business Law Students Visit Central Islip Courthouse B usiness Law students had the opportunity to meet with the Honorable Joseph F. Bianco, United States federal court judge, on Friday, February 1, at the Central Islip facility. This visit included a tour of his chambers, along with a detailed overview of his career responsibilities. This was a wonderful experience for the students to see and hear firsthand the law concepts that have been covered in class. Students also had the opportunity to conduct a Cinderella Mock trial in his courtroom. Overall, this was a great firsthand experience for our students to gain an appreciation for our Constitution. It also gave students an opportunity to understand how the court system functions.
