The Potentate’s Message
Hello Nobles and
Ladies,
This summer has
baked the green
grass to khaki. It has also been
a busy time at Oasis Shrine &
Convention Center with new
carpet giving the offices, ballroom
and restaurant a brand new feel.
We have also taken measures to
lower our future irrigation costs
by sinking a new well.
There has been a change
in the front office with Wendy
Rosales’ exit to pursue other
endeavors, and we wish her well.
I am happy to report that Linda
Wallace has returned to work for
Oasis, joining Brittany Wright to
help keep us on track. Be sure to
welcome her back!
While we were all dealing
with the oppressive heat in
July, I experienced another of
life’s hurdles that forces you
to slow down a bit, cataract
surgery, but Lady Theresa and
I enjoyed several events. We
were honored to attend High
Point Shrine Club’s first Masonic
Unity Night. Club President,
Noble Ed Hurley and Treasurer,
Noble Doug Garland worked
hard to draw Master Masons
in the High Point area to the
event where Noble Chad Delp
(President of Mystic Shrine Club)
and I spoke on Shrinedom and
answered questions. While we
were engaged in that, the ladies
in attendance were treated to
lessons from a local artist. You
should see their paintings! Lady
Theresa and I later returned to
Greensboro to Noble Harold
Baucom’s, where we met Past

hosted by Captain, Noble Steve
Blake.
Question: What does the
Provost Guard do at Oasis?
Answer: The Provost Guard
is one of the busiest units at
Oasis. Members reach out to
our new candidates prior to
each Ceremonial, shepherd the
candidates through the entire
experience making sure they are
present, accounted for, and on
time – and ensuring each new
Shriner gets his ‘money’s worth.’
PP Elder and I trucked it
back to Charlotte, just a tad
tardy for the annual Oasis Patrol
Past Captain’s Night. Outer
Guard, Noble John Harder was in
attendance for this event, where
the Patrol welcomed seven new
members. Noble Harder had a
few words to mark the occasion:
“My congratulations to the Oasis
Patrol on a wonderful event.
Great food, great friends, and
superb planning and execution.”
Look for photos in this issue of
the Desert Dust.
Lady Theresa and I began
August at the Catawba Shrine
Club’s first ever fish fry/comedy
show. We were part of a crowd
of about 80 who enjoyed a great
meal and a great show. When
you see the pictures you’ll see
why we’d all go again.
August 9 we attended
the 44th Annual Shrine 100
at Carolina Speedway hosted
by the Gaston County Shrine
Club. We were greeted by Club
President, Noble John White,
Second Ceremonial Master,
Noble Tim Daniels and emcee
Chaplain John Stanley, who was
this year’s honoree. Race King
Eli Poulsen and Queen Raylee
Hill, both Hospital patients, were
our distinguished guests. Dune
Cats Cpt. Jack Stallings was right
up front with his unit helping the
Gaston County Shrine Club make
the event a smooth affair. Check
out pictures here in the Desert
Dust.
As I suggested earlier this
year: if you would like for Lady
Theresa and me to attend your
events or fundraisers, reach out
to us by email, text, or phone.
We have had a blast so far and
are looking forward to seeing
even more of you. Just let me
know, and if time permits, we’ll
be there.
The second half of this year
appears to be speeding up as
yearend comes into sight. Thank
you, each of you, for allowing
me to serve as your Potentate.
It warms my heart to see –
everywhere I go – that your goal
is the same as mine. “We are
family working for the kids.” I am
always proud to be a Shriner.
We are family working for the
kids!
Yours in faith

The Recorder’s Message
Greetings once
more Nobles,
Ladies and
Friends. Do you
know what the best thing about
September is? You may have
your very own opinion, but for
me it is S.A.S.A. The 2016 Fall
Festival is quickly approaching so
please be sure to get registered
and make your reservations for
a fun-filled time in Myrtle Beach.
There is plenty of information in
this Desert Dust issue, and on
the Oasis Shriners and S.A.S.A.
websites. Let me know directly if
you’re interested in joining one of
our competition parade units, and
I will do my best to assist you.
Plan to come to Myrtle Beach to
have some fun and show your
Oasis Shriner Pride!
Bylaws: The last official
and approved modification to
the bylaws of Oasis Shriners
was in 2001. Since then there
have been many changes in
the way we perform our Shrine
business and functions. Shriners
International has adopted a
recommended bylaws template
and references their bylaws for
many of the articles and sections
that are not specific to individual
Shrine Centers. As a matter of
housekeeping and updating, our
Oasis bylaws are currently under
review by the Oasis Divan Board
of Directors for amending this fall.
Be on the look-out as the official
notification will be in a future issue
with a copy of amended, proposed
bylaws in the on-line version of
the Desert Dust. Every Oasis
Noble in good standing is invited
to participate in the governance
affairs of Oasis Shriners.
Non-Payment of Dues:
Nobles, we have a problem. A
higher than normal number of
our Oasis members have yet to
pay their dues for 2016, and we
also have a rather large group
that has yet to pay their dues
for 2015. The Nobles that are
still in arrears on December 31
run the risk of being suspended
for non-payment of dues. If you
have not yet paid your dues
to current, I highly encourage
you to do so. If you are unsure
of your dues payment status,
please give the Oasis office a
call at 704-549-9600 or send an

be sent by Shriners International
Headquarters from Tampa in
mid-September. Please be on the
look-out and be aware that those
Oasis dues are payable no later
than January 1, 2017.
Membership: Oasis has
recently remapped its Districts.
We have doubled the number of
Membership Districts from 7 to 14,
including an ‘At Large’ district for
our out of jurisdiction members.
This move will streamline the
organizational efforts and shrink
the territories to be managed
better. The Oasis Membership
Team is on the prowl for dedicated
and committed members,
especially in the out-lying areas,
to join their team. Send an
inquiry email to membership@
oaisshriners.org if interested.
Office Staff: Recently
Oasis had some personnel
changes in the administrative
office. Lady Brittany Wright
has been promoted to Office
Manager with an emphasis on
accounting and Lady Linda
Wallace is embracing the patient
coordination, membership and
receptionist duties. These two
Ladies are packing a great onetwo punch for serving our Nobles,

By Edie Wilson
From Delta faucets to dream vacations, there was something for
everyone at the second annual Shriners ‘Auction for Love.’
The Highland Lake Inn Grand Ole Hall was the site, and
Hendersonville Shrine Club was the host on July 21 when close to 200
people, including local dignitaries, gathered to raise funds for Shriners
Hospitals for Children.
There was music, fabulous food, and fezzes all around. County
Commissioner Noble Tommy Thompson steered the live auction. The big
money was on a Cancun vacation valued at $2800.
Hendersonville Shrine Club, known for it’s fundraising prowess,
partnered with Sam’s Club and other generous sponsors and donors to
make this a memorable and successful event where was once again it
was “Love to the Rescue.”
Wyatt Banks is a patient at Greenville and Philadelphia Shriners
Hospitals for Children.
“He took his first steps at
Shriners Hospital.”
Tommy Thompson urges
the crowd to “Bid with
your heart!” When the
party was over, close to
$30,000 had been raised.
“I’ve accomplished three
bucket list things: I became a
Shriner, I am a Shrine Clown,
and I’m making a trip to
Shriners Hospital in Cincinnati
to help a burned child go
through the process
of healing.”
Dimples
Club President, Wayne Alley, better known as Dimples the Clown, shared
a personal story of how Shriners Hospitals saved his life when, at the
age of five, a gasoline fire burned 70% of his body.

Partyin’ Hillbilly Style
Pictures by Chrissy Leatherman
For us Hillbillies, the month of July was pretty eventful. After three
parades, Hillbilly Clan #13 had our annual meeting on July 15 at
Martha and Ellis Jones’s beautiful lake house. The weather was perfect
and the fellowship was wonderful, but let me tell y’all, the food those
Hillbillies whipped up was out of this world! If you didn’t gain a little bit
of weight, it was definitely your own fault. The memories we made were
more than any of us could ask for. It was such a pleasure being able
to watch all the lil’ Hillbillies jumping and swimming in the lake, running
around playing, and just being kids. We took boat rides and were able
to just appreciate what all God has created for us. If you’re looking for
a close knit group of friends, us Hillbillies will welcome you with open
arms. The more in our
family, the merrier! Don’t

Oasis Golf Club Mountain Outing
Members of the Oasis Golf Club
and their guests beat the 90
degree heat in July by traveling
to the North Carolina High
Country for a two-day golf outing.
The group played at Linville
Land Harbor, a golf, tennis and
recreation resort in Linville, North
Carolina just four miles south of
Grandfather Mountain. Morning
temperatures were in the low
60’s and afternoons were in the
low 80’s while Charlotte residents
were sweltering in the high 90’s.
The group enjoyed lunch at Land
Harbor’s “19th Hole” before their
“Shotgun” start. This beautiful
semi-private, member-owned,
mountain golf course boasts
18 challenging holes of golf
with tree lined fairways, several
water features and excellent
conditioning. At an elevation of
3,500 feet, the layout followed
the natural contours of the
land, which created the perfect
setting for a strong test of golf
with exhilarating views. Two
distinctively different nines tested
all aspects of the player’s game.
The golfers discovered quickly
that accuracy, not length, was
the key to a good score, and the
back nine rewarded the player
whose short game was their
strength. Green speeds were
at a fast and fair pace, as the
design combined a good variety
of undulating sloping and level
putting surfaces.
Following the afternoon
round of golf they enjoyed
a catered dinner at a local
restaurant in Newland, NC.
The next day, the group
played a round of golf at the
beautiful golf course at the
Village of Sugar Mountain in
Banner Elk where they were
royally treated by Golf Director
Tom McAuliffe. This club may
be the best kept secret in
mountain golf. Located just
minutes from Boone, Banner Elk
and the Blue Ridge Parkway,
the 18-hole municipal course
is “Everyman’s Golf Course” in
a region home to some of the
world’s premiere private country
club communities. The par-64
layout maximizes every view,

featured nine par threes, eight
par fours, and a single par five.
At an elevation of 4,000 feet,
the course offered immaculate
putting surfaces, hailed by
those who play here as second

Mountain won-over, marked
for life by the brilliance of the
routing and the magical quality
of the putting surfaces. The
layout courses through a verdant
land rich in laurel and rushing
streams, and exploits every
panoramic view the property
possesses. Best of all, the
course delivered an enjoyable
experience for players of all
skill levels.
The two day outing was
hosted by Noble French Harvey,
a charter member of the Oasis
Golf Club who lives at the Land
Harbor Resort during the spring
and summer. He was able to
arrange for reduced rates at both
courses. Another outing for July
2017 has already been planned.

club plays each month from

Chaplain’s Corner
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by
so great a cloud of witnesses…. let us
run with perseverance the race that is set
before us.” - Hebrews 12
A few weeks ago, Noble Chris Hall,
Membership Chairman, hosted
a Shriners Legacy Evening. At
the dinner/meeting were Shriners
whose family members were/are
also Shriners. (Example: I have
had two brothers, an uncle and a
great uncle as Shriners). It was
a great evening. We received
plaques, presented by Imperial
Potentate Jerry Gantt, had pictures
made, enjoyed wonderful food and
outstanding fellowship.
It was at that meeting that I
thought of our verse of Scripture
from Hebrews: “…we are
NASCARTS
John H. Stanley,
P.M., P.P., Chaplain
surrounded by so great a cloud
of witnesses…” A great cloud of
witnesses. We do owe much to
those who have gone before us.
Those of us of a certain age (smile)
will remember a particular year that
The Yankees played the Dodgers
in one of their memorable World
Series Baseball Games. The year
was 1963 Sandy Koufax pitched
for the Dodgers. The game was
memorable in that Sandy Koufax
broke the record of 14 strike-outs in
a World Series game. Carl Erskine
had held the record since 1953.
Of course, the game was
Join A
Winning Team
memorable for Koufax in that
he had set a new record. But
following the game, Koufax said
it was a tremendous inspiration
to know that among the 69,000
spectators that day in Yankee
Stadium was Carl Erskine. In fact,
not only was Erskine in the stands,
but Erskine-- the person who had
held the record for over ten years-was cheering Koufax on to break
that record.
We as Shriners and we as
individuals are surrounded by
so great a cloud of witnesses. It
is much the same that Sir Isaac
Newton wrote: “If I see further
today, it is because I stand on
the shoulders of giants.” In such
manner, if we “see” further today
it is because we too, stand on the
shoulders of giants.
Think about those few people
who journeyed to Richmond, VA. In
1894 to join the Shriners, and who
in 1895 established Oasis Shriners,
Charlotte. And, then we think of the
Shriners at that Imperial Session
in 1923 who voted to establish
a network of hospitals: Shriners
Hospitals for Children. What a
grand legacy they leave us!
And, it is up to us as Shriners
to do those things and to act
in those ways that some day—
perhaps over 100 years from
now—someone will say of us, “if
we are great today, it is because
we stand on the shoulders of
giants”. What are those things that
we should be about to ensure the
continuation of Shriner Fraternity
and of Shriners Hospitals.
John Stanley, P.M., P.P. is Chaplain of Oasis Shriners. He is Chaplain,
McLean Funeral Directors (Gastonia), and Minister of Visitation of First
Presbyterian, Gastonia. In the fiscal Shrine Year, 2012-13, he served
Shriners International Imperial Potentate Al Madsen as Imperial Chaplain.

our Fall Ceremonial
It’s not too soon to start thinking about our Fall Ceremonial,
November 4-5 at Oasis Shrine Headquarters & Convention Center.
Your Potentate and Lady Theresa have planned a stunning lineup of
events starting with Friday night’s Pirate Party. You’re encouraged to
dress out in your pirate gear and come aboard The Good Ship Oasis.
Friday night’s festivities include dancing to the music of Summerdaze
Party Band. If your wardrobe doesn’t include boots and a sword, just
come dressy casual.
Saturday’s events include a ladies luncheon beginning at 11
o’clock. Lady Theresa’s theme will be “Fight Like a Girl,” in keeping

Oasis Membership Team and Oasis District Changes Important Announcements
Jurisdictional Area is the
New Oasis Districts
During the July 14 Divan
meeting, the Divan voted to
increase the number of districts
within the Oasis jurisdiction.
This was a unanimous decision
and has been met with great
enthusiasm by existing District
Representatives. Several of our
old districts simply contained
too many counties for a District
Representative and his team to
manage in the type of intensive
manner needed for membership
purposes. Below, you will find
a list of the new Oasis districts
followed by the names of all new
appointments and moves to those
districts.
New Vice Chairman
At this time, I am also pleased to
announce that Noble Joe Burris
now serves as the Membership
Vice Chairman for the entire
membership team, effective
immediately. Noble Joe has
served Oasis well and diligently
as a District Representative
and has assumed several other
responsibilities along the way. He
will continue to be a tremendous
asset to the team and to Oasis.
I appreciate his willingness
to serve in this key capacity.
Please join me in congratulating
Noble Joe and please feel free
to contact him at any time with
questions.
Filling New District Vacancies
We are in the process of filling
some District Representative
vacancies on the Membership
Team due to the creation of new
districts. If you know the name
of an outstanding, hard working
noble who resides in one of those
districts and would be a great
asset to our team, then feel free
to pass along his name to me.
Please join me in welcoming
District Representatives Brian
Clay and Robert Efird as the
newest members to our team.

Oasis Shriners Patrol Unit
Holds Past Captains Night
On Saturday, July 30, the Oasis Shriners Patrol Unit held its annual
Past Captains Night which historically honors all living Past Captains
while welcoming new candidates into the Patrol. The Patrol was
fortunate to welcome seven new members into its ranks including two
new members who are sons of Oasis Patrolmen. This event marked
the first time since the 1970’s that seven new members joined the
Patrol during a single Past Captains Night event. The Oasis Patrol is
the oldest unit in Oasis Shriners having been formed in 1910.

Gastonia, NC 8/9/16 - Johnny Pursley of Clover, SC took home the

Shriners Hospitals for Children. Over the 44-year span of this event,
Gaston County Shriners have donated over two million dollars to
benefit the children who are cared for at our hospitals.
Honoree John Stanley PP took the stage with Ill. Sir Johnny King and
the Divan to begin the evening’s events.
Yellow was the color of the day
as caution flags waved drivers
to a restart again and again.
“There were times when the skies were threatening which kept
attendance down, but this year we were able to get the race in with no

once all donations are in and the bills have been paid.”

SHRINERS
TELEMARKETING FOR OASIS CIRCUS
This is to inform the Nobility that we have contracted with Etsell, Inc (Shrine
Services) to handle the telemarketing for our circus again this year. The
telemarketers started in April and we have sent them an updated listing
of Oasis Nobles and their telephone numbers so they would not call our
members. If you have multiple telephone lines or run a business, then you
may be called by the telemarketers. If you do receive a call, politely inform
the caller that you are an Oasis Member and that you will be contributing
through our Circus Mom & Dads Program which is for Oasis Shriners and
their family.
We have had several people contact local Shriners to see if this is a legitimate operation. This is very much supported by Oasis and was approved
at the stated membership meeting at the beginning of the year. If you are
asked about this, please let the interested party know that this is an Oasis
Fundraiser and that Etsell (Shrine Services) sends runners out to collect
the contributions from participants after they agree to contribute to the
circus project.
If you have questions, please contact Noble Rodney Morgan at (704)
985-5253. If you need to leave a message we will get back in touch with you.
