At El Kahir Shrine
Greetings Nobles! I hope this finds you all well! April is here and El Kahir is ready for Spring! We will kick
April off with a steak fry April 9th in honor of Nobile Leonard Nielsen who was a long time member of El
Kahir. Future events include: Minneapolis Hospital trip May 20,21,22, the Potentates Ball, Karavan,
Shrine Bowl, the 142nd Imperial Session and CSSA in Little Rock, Arkansas. Reservations for rooms to the
Potentates Ball can be made at the Coralville Marriott under the group (2016 El Kahir Potentates Ball
June 10, 11, 12)(319-688-4000). Also room reservations for CSSA (August 24th-27th) can be made at the
Holiday Inn Presidential in downtown Little Rock under the group (El Kahir Shrine)(501-235-5610). Please
book your rooms early, so the temple can release unused rooms and not incur a fee for the rooms not
released. Nobles it is important that units/clubs provide in a timely manner parade and fundraising request forms to the Temple Recorders prior to such activity or event for approval.
Have you been to a temple event? If you have thank you! If your answer is no, why not? Come on out to the temple and enjoy
some fellowship with others. If you’re in the area on Tuesday nights stop into the temple and meet someone new, bring a friend,
socialize with others. Have you been selling the Gun Cabinet Raffle tickets? The Raffle is April 23. We, the Divan, need everyone
selling Gun Cabinet Raffle Tickets. If you don’t have any please check some out from the office.
The temple is going on a trip to the Minneapolis Shriners Hospital for Children the weekend of May 20-22. We plan on taking a bus
up Friday and will catch a Minnesota Twins Game. Saturday we will attend Hospital Day event at the Minneapolis Shriners Hospital
for Children. Returning Sunday May 22. Please get your reservations in to the temple office ASAP as space is limited.
Lastly, I would like to recognize a noble for his excellence and commitment to El Kahir Shrine. I would like to recognize Noble Dennis Hanna a member of the Northeast Iowa Shrine Club. Noble Dennis is a recipient of the El Kahir Excellence, Commitment and
Tradition award for graciously serving 36 continuous years as Secretary/Treasurer for the Northeast Iowa Shrine Club from 19802016. Congratulations, your commitment and willingness to serve as an Officer in the Northeast Iowa Shrine Club brings great credit upon yourself, your club and El Kahir Shrine.
Yours in the faith,
Ron DeVoll Jr., Potentate
Greeting Shrine Ladies,
It has been nice seeing and visiting with you through the many events these past couple of months. I want to wish everyone a Happy Easter and hope you enjoy time with family and friends.
I wanted to update you on a few dates and events that have been planned in hopes you would consider attending.
April 9th: Steak Dinner. Please consider attending this event as it is honor of my late grandfather Leonard Nielsen a member of
the Firehouse Gang. This event is taking place instead of the ceremonial.
May 11th: Stated Meeting. I am very excited to announce I have arranged for an Art & Wine Party. This is scheduled for May 11th
while the Nobles are conducting their meeting. This will start at 7 PM - 9PM. I have been informed this is a prompt start at 7PM,
please don’t be late. We will enjoy an evening full of wine and painting. We will be painting our own artwork with some guided
coaching. Please wear comfortable clothes. Cost is $20.00 cash or charge, which you can pay that evening. Please call the temple to
reserve your spot as space is limited.
May 20th thru 22nd: Weekend planned up north to visit the Minneapolis Hospital. The weekend will include a Twins baseball game,
visit to the Minneapolis Hospital and Dinner Theatre. Please consider attending especially to have a great representation of our
temple at the hospital. A flyer will be posted for more details.
I am very excited about the upcoming couple of months. Please do not hesitate to contact me at jill.devoll@gmail.com. Please allow 48-72 hours for a response. Thank you for all that you do!
Jill DeVoll, First Lady

Ramblings from the Recorder
Welcome to WebFez!
WebFez is the new Shrine Temple Membership Management System introduced by the Imperial
Shrine Information Services Team last fall. It is a web (cloud) based system that replaces the inhouse Red Fez Membership system that we have been using here the last 10 years or so.
Using WebFez, individual Nobles have access to their same membership data that we have here at
El Kahir. This information includes Club and Unit Memberships, payment information, address, telephone numbers, and eMail addresses. All information is currently read only, but in the next couple of
months, an upgrade will allow Nobles to update their own contact information. (At the present, if you
see an error or change in your contact information, please contact me and we will get it updated.)
WebFez is located at: WebFez.shrinenet.org
To register for WebFez the first time, you will need to have your Member Number (printed on your dues card) available,
to know that you belong to El Kahir, and also your first and last name (easy). You also need to have an eMail account
that will be used for your login name. The registration process is pretty painless and you will soon access to your Nobility data. Until next monthPlease remember that beginning in 2016, All Shrine Temples Dues Cards are being issued out of Shriners International
Headquarters in Tampa, Florida. They will be permanent plastic cards and will only be issued twice a month. It is taking
at least 6-8 weeks after your dues payments are posted before the Permanent Dues Cards will be mailed out. After
2016 there will be a year sticker sent out when dues are paid and the sticker will need to be put on your permanent
plastic dues card.
Yours in the faith, Richard Bowersox, Recorder

Hello Nobles and Ladies,
I would like to talk a little bit about a story I heard from a fine Shriner in North Iowa. There was a
Shriner who received a call from El Kahir Temple to take a young girl up to the Twin Cities Hospital.
He didn’t know this young lady at all but went to pick her and her mother up and took them to the
Hospital. The young lady had a problem with her leg and was unable to walk correctly. Soon after
arrival at the Hospital and examinations with the medical personnel there, the Shriner was asked if
he could please bring the young lady back the following week for more care. He stated, “well is there
anything that you can do now? Heck, we are already here so if it takes a while longer no big deal”.
They said, “Well, if you can wait a few more hours we should be able to get the care needed done
and you will be on your way”. So, he waited, and he waited, and waited some more. Yes, it did take a while but, it was
well worth it. Upon completion of the care, the young lady came not just walking, but bouncing out with a customized
prosthetic leg. Smiling from ear to ear while looking up at him she said, “I am so happy, I can play, and we can dance!”
As she looked up at him with the smile and gave him a big hug around his waist.
How do you think that Noble felt? How would you feel?
Let me tell you about this Noble and what he has done for the North Iowa Shrine Club and the Shriners Twin Cities Hospital. He has taken all that positive energy and the love for the children and Hospital and turned it into more great things to
help. Now this Noble isn’t necessarily a young lad, I think he is around 70-80ish but, I don’t want to say because he may
get mad at me. Anyway this Fine Noble has taken it upon himself to sell advertisements for the North Iowa Shrine Club
Circus. He has communicated with all types of businesses and people in that area. This Noble has sold over $5000 in
advertisements. This is over one third of the advertisement sales. This Noble has his heart in the right place and when
he tells me the story about the young lady, his eyes tear up, my eyes tear up, and I know how much the Shrine and
Shriners Hospitals for Children mean to both of us. I’m going to tell you who he is but, don’t tell him because he may get
mad at me. His name is Noble Roger Muth. We as Shriners are very fortunate to have Noble Roger. Noble Roger is
someone all of us can look up to as a model. If our hearts are in the right spot as his we too will be able to bring the positive energy you can bring to bear in helping our fine Fraternity and The Shriners Children Hospitals. Thank You, Noble
Roger for all you do and all that you have done!
If anyone has any questions or comments please feel free to contact me via my cell phone at (319) 610-0877 or email me
at countryrobinson@yahoo.com at any time.
David A. Robinson, Chief Rabban
How do our New Shriners learn about excellence and living it each day? How do they learn of our
rich traditions within the Shrine? Or why you and I are committed to this great fraternity? This can be
as simple as our Old Shriners mentoring our New Shriners. This does not have to be a structured
program. Each of us can be a mentor by including a New Shriner when making plans such as when
attending the HP&P and OG dinner. Shake the hand of someone you do not know and welcome
them. Share some camel’s milk with someone that is new to your club or unit. Each of these actions
will strengthen our Shrine Temple. Do not leave the task of mentoring only to the top line signer.
What if a couple of Shriners would mentor the new Shriner, think of the difference to that Shriner and
his Lady. Think of the strength and knowledge of tradition, excellence and commitment that will be
shared and which will create a stronger El Kahir. Will you be that mentoring Shriner to make El Kahir stronger?
Mark your calendar: Invite your Masonic brothers to the April 9 Steak Fry and April 23 there is the most anticipated HP&P
and OG Dinner and Play with a live and silent auction. Both of these events would be a great opportunity to spend some
time with a new Shriner, getting to know them and creating that bond that will strengthen this Temple.
Any questions or comments please contact me at droberge2020@gmail.com or 612-386-1020.

Nobles and Ladies:
Hope you were able to get to the Easter Egg Hunt and see the kids. Thanks to Hospital Dad’s, North
East Iowa Motor Clowns, and Women’s Auxiliary and all Nobles who helped and attended.
I missed last months stated meeting, I was in Tampa at Assistant Rabban School. Earlier in the
month my lady and I attended Moolah’s Potentate Ball, it is nice to get out and see other nobles.
We had a great meal with the Flying Fez. I went to North Iowa Shrine Club where they sent some old
photos back to the Temple for display, thank you Nobles. Also, had a great time with Dubuque County Shrine Club, they are working on a Kids Identification Program which they may need help with this
Spring and Summer.
It was great to see all the public at the Shrine Center for the Wild Game Feed and Noble Jeff Lorimer and his bride Jill’s
wedding reception.
Let’s be proud to be a Shriner and show the public.
Yours in faith, Dave Sutton, Assistant Rabban

As a Noble of El Kahir Shrine you are encouraged to get involved with the work of our fraternity. Our Hospital Dads Unit
is the tip of the spear in the effort to help our kids. We strongly encourage you to join the Hospital Dads Unit or call the
Temple office at (319) 395-0109 to volunteer to drive and join the elite team of Nobles who transport our children to our
Twin Cities and Chicago Hospitals. We encourage every Noble to become a driver and to experience the life changing
effect of working with the younger and the weaker. We extend a BIG THANK YOU to the Drivers who transported children so far this year!
DIRECTORS STAFF
Greetings from the Directors Staff. By the time you read this you will be all rested up from the change to Daylight Savings Time. Spring is here! Since we’re talking about spring - What is Irish and comes out in the spring? (Read the article to find out.)
If you missed activities so far in March you missed a lot. The Director’s Staff entertained a large crowd for the Basket
Night. Mark your calendar for April 8. The best burgers and tenderloins in a 4 state area.
While your pen is out, mark your calendar for April 30. The Director’s Staff “Taste of Elegance” wine tasting is just
around the corner. Talk to another Noble, talk with your neighbor, bring a group with you. It will be a fun evening to
remember. See the advertisement in the Karavan.
Parade season will be here before we know it. Director’s Staff is starting practice soon so keep your eyes open. I think
I heard several members mention starting calisthenics and more nutritional diets to ensure we are all in tip-top shape.
I remind you again - The Shrine Directors Association annual meeting will be upon us quickly. Plan your holiday now
for April 13 – 16, 2016 in Springfield, MA. If you haven’t attended SDA before or it has been a while, you owe it to
yourself to attend. I can tell you, it can be slippery, and fun, you could get odd wardrobe suggestions, and learn
LOADS about making our Ceremonial more fun for new members. Mark your calendar now, visit http://
www.sda2016.org/ today, and buy your plane ticket.
Don’t miss out, plan ahead for all of the fun activities at El Kahir. Oh yeah, the answer above is – Paddy O’ Furniture.

HAPPENINGS AT THE HOSPITAL
Plan on boarding the bus on May 20th at 9:00 AM that leaves for Hospital Day at Minneapolis Shriners Hospital for Children. See complete details in this issue. Support your hospital, as well as having an enjoyable, interesting and informative trip with other nobles, ladies and guests of El Kahir.
Prom Night for our teen agers is scheduled for April 9 th. This date marks the 5th anniversary of a fun, exciting time for
our high school youngsters. For many of these kids, attending their own high school prom is very difficult; consequently,
this a highlight for them. Unfortunately, many of the young men do not have the proper attire. The staff would welcome
any tuxes, shirts, studs, cuff links, shoes and other accessories that are no longer being used, It may be too late to help
them this year, but by giving this year, the staff will have plenty of time to prepare the youngsters for next year. Also if
any the ladies have old prom dresses, shoes and other accessories, the young girls would appreciate it. Contact me or
the office, if you wish to have me pick up the clothes, or desire additional information.
Through February 29th, El Kahir had four patient intakes at SHCTC. We are exactly on target to meet our goal of twenty
four for 2016. Keep prospecting for kids, who need our help. It can be a life changing experience for the child.
Unlike past years, it is unusual for people to remain with a company or organization for many years. This is not the case
at SHCTC. On Friday Evening, March 18, employees who have reached milestones in their years of service to the hospital were recognized. Three staff members had been associated with SHCTC for five years, nine for ten years, three for
fifteen, one for twenty, five for twenty five years, three for thirty and two for thirty five years. In addition to applauding
these individuals for their dedication, credit must be given to the administration for creating an environment that employees enjoy. If you have an opportunity to visit with a member of the staff, thank him or her for their years of service and
dedication.
Until next month, remember to keep our kids in your heart.
