Introducing the 2012-13 Shriners Hospitals
for Children Patient Ambassadors
Every year, Shriners Hospitals for Children® chooses
two patient ambassadors to represent the thousands
of children who receive care at the health care
system’s 22 facilities annually, regardless of the
ability to pay. The Ambassadors will share their
stories to inspire others and raise awareness of
Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Meet Hunter Woodhall and Jérémy Gabriel, the
Athlete and the Artist, our 2012-13 Ambassadors.
They were introduced after the premiere of the
video which tells their stories, “Two Worlds Apart
– One Place of Hope,” during the public relations
presentation at the recent Imperial Session of
Shriners International in Charlotte, N.C.
The Athlete:
He plays basketball, football and soccer; he wrestles;
he runs track, snow skis, swims and roller blades, all
with two prosthetic legs.
Hunter Woodhall, 13, was born with fibular
hemimelia of the left leg. The condition is a
shortening or absence of one of the two bones in
the calf, which may require amputation or bonelengthening procedures to correct. In addition, his
right ankle was fused.
The Woodhalls had a difficult time finding
information about Hunter’s conditions. After
exploring options that offered no real hope, the
Woodhalls contacted Shriners Hospitals for Children.
After consulting with a team of experts at the
Tampa, Fla., facility, the Woodhalls proceeded with
the amputation of Hunter’s feet. After his surgery –
at just 11 months old – Hunter was soon walking and
running around. He hasn’t stopped since.
Later, the Woodhalls moved to Syracuse, Utah,
where Hunter became a patient of Shriners
Hospitals for Children – Salt Lake City. Hunter is a
straight A student and an accomplished athlete. The
team of experts at Shriners Hospitals for Children
– Salt Lake City has always provided options to
help Hunter be able to do anything he wants to do,
including fitting him with some of the first Flex-Foot
Cheetah custom feet that the hospital had ever
provided, as well as special liners for wrestling, in
addition to his prosthetic legs for daily use.
The Artist:
He has sung for both Céline Dion and the Pope; he
has recorded two albums and co-authored a book.
He was born deaf.
Jérémy Gabriel (left) with Hunter Woodhall (right)
Jérémy Gabriel, 15, of Quebec City, Canada, was
born prematurely with severe facial malformations
and other complications requiring intensive care.
Jérémy was finally diagnosed at 6 months with
Treacher Collins Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder.
In addition to head, skull and facial deformities,
children with this condition generally have absent or
malformed ears, which can cause hearing loss.
Jérémy was referred to Shriners Hospitals for
Children – Canada at age 5 for treatment. There,
the family met Lucie Lessard, M.D., a plastic and
craniofacial surgeon. Dr. Lessard suggested a BAHA
(Bone Anchored Hearing Aid) Implant, which Jérémy
received in June 2003, at age 6. After the surgery,
Jérémy was fascinated with sound, and discovered
he could sing. In fact, he has perfect pitch. Jérémy is
scheduled for additional facial reconstructive surgery
later this year, including surgery to reconstruct his
cheekbones, as well as surgery on his jaw, which
should improve his breathing and chewing.
Jérémy now attends a high school specializing in
performing arts, where he is an excellent student.
He is preparing for a career in the music business.
Shriners Hospitals for Children is proud to have
been able to provide expert care to both Hunter and
Jérémy, and wishes them every success in
the future.

ES-SELAMU ALEIKUM . . .
Greetings TO ALL THE NOBLES AND LADIES OF BOUMI TEMPLE
Fellow Nobles,
It is hard to believe the
summer has passed so quickly
and the fall season is now
upon us. This summer we
have enjoyed the pleasure of
many very successful events
including the carnival, thanks
to the Carnival Committee
and the dedicated volunteers.
My thanks for a job well done!
Thanks to Past Potentate Al
Winterling and his devoted
actors who never missed a
cue. The Hot Foot Ceremonial, which contained the largest
class Boumi has seen in many years, provided the new Nobles
with a great learning experience.
Among the successful events for the year was the
Imperial Convention in Charlotte, N.C. The units of Boumi
have once again proven themselves with their outstanding
performances. All in attendance enjoyed the Boumi Temple
Golf Classic at Hunt Valley Golf Course. The summer has
also seen numerous crab feasts. Many enjoyed the hot
steamed crabs and all the delicious food that comes with
such an event.
As I am sure you have all heard, we have designed new
Boumi tags, which are on sale now. If you would like to get
in early and obtain a low tag number, please contact Mary or
myself for an application.
Looking forward, a highlight for Oct. 6 is the Boumi
Oktoberfest. Whether you were in attendance last year or
you missed the event, this year is promised to be even better!
I hope everyone enjoys what is left of the summer and I
hope to see you at the upcoming Boumi events.
Remember, if your cat has green fur dip him in the tub
because it could be a frog.
Yours in Faith,
F. Carl Weiss III

Nobles,
We are ending what has been a very
hot summer, and I hope everyone's
was safe, fun-filled and healthy. As
we start the last third of the year, let's
take a look at some of the things that
have taken place. The Legion of Honor
held a great Family Day Picnic for
the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Several different units and clubs have
held picnics, crab feasts, and pool
parties that have been great successes.
Now we need to start thinking about
some other things that we need to do
for the Shrine.
At the Imperial Convention
in Charlotte, N.C., your Shrine
was presented with an award for
membership. Boumi Shriners has
taken in more members than we lost,
with the Black Camel excluded. This
year we look forward to an even better
year on membership. We had a great
Ceremonial in June when we brought
in 42 new Shriners. We have another
Ceremonial coming up in October and
we need to do all that we can to make it
just as successful as the June class.
Each and every one of us needs
to take on the job as a Membership
Ambassador of Boumi Shriners. We
must go to our Blue Lodges and not
take members away but let them see
they can do both. Tell them of the
good things about the Shrine and its
members.
I ask every one of you as a member
to sit down with your family and look
at the fall calendar—see what you can
do, what you would like to do, and then
support the things that you can. No one
is asked to support all of the events, just
the ones you can.
Gin and I look forward to seeing
everyone in Virginia Beach for the
MASA Fall Convention. We will
go parade and compete, but most
importantly, we will have fun and have
it together. I look forward to seeing
everyone now that we are back in full
swing. Remember, if I can be of any
help in whatever you are planning, give
me a call at the Recorder's Office.

The summer schedule for Touch of
Class included the open house at
the Grand Lodge, the Brightwood
Retirement
Community,
Roland
Park Senior Apartments, the Towson
Elks, the Hospital Day Picnic, the
Charlestown assisted living facility,
and the July 4th Parade. Touch of Class
was ready to go—and we had a place
to go—unfortunately, the bus wouldn't
go and we couldn't make the parade.
However, the bus has since been
repaired and is ready for the Virginia
Beach Parade.
We always look forward to the
MASA Convention. It's a fun time
for the band, as well as for family
members. Touch of Class has done
well in both the band competitions and
the parades. Preparations are already
under way for this year's competition,
and we will begin working on the
music for the parade.
Afternoons, weather permitting,
we play on the hotel lawn facing the
beach. There are no awards or trophies.

The start of the year 2012 was not

Lee Hofman (trombone) are now

Yak-Rem-Peh Court #32
Lady Ruth E. Gonzalez, High Priestess
Summer is hopefully waning and will
give way to better and cooler weather.
Hasn't it been one very hot summer?
Our Grand visitation in June went
exceedingly well. The Grand High
Priestess was very pleased with her visit
to our court and was duly impressed
with our new quarters at the Boumi
Shrine Center. She was especially
pleased to be able to enjoy the "best"
crab cakes that she has ever had.
Congratulations to Lady Dorothy
Needer who was elected to be our
associate princess.
Our court is looking forward to our
participation at the 47th Annual Mid
East Unit Meet in Springfield, Mass.,
from Oct. 12 through 14. The fun and
fellowship will continue on Oct. 21 at 2
p.m. with a Tasting Party in the Boumi
Scimeter Room. Put this on your
calendar, as this is one event you don't
want to miss out on!
Yak-Rem-Peh Court #32 meets on

The summer months are upon us and it
has been hot, hot, hot. This year is passing
us by rapidly. Thanks to all members and
officers of our great club—we are having
a successful year so far.
Our May meeting was dedicated to
the wonderful ladies of our club. The
entertainment was outstanding, to say
the least. Everyone enjoyed the GQ
female vocal quartet that sang for us. In
addition, Dottie Manning gave all the
ladies beautiful pewter crab pins. This
particular pin represents a part of our
state's history. As usual, the food and
fellowship we all shared was awesome.
Noble A. Joseph Manning, President
The June dinner/meeting at Friendly
Farms was well-attended, with 65
members and guests at the annual
affair. We were entertained by a clown/
magician who included a lot of audience
participation and received a lot of laughs
from everybody. It was a fantastic way
to end the first half of the year.
Before we know it summer will be
over and we will begin the second half
of this year with our dinner/meeting on
Thursday, Sept. 27. At this particular
meeting, Scott Manning, our president's
son, and Mr. Tony Umlah from MannPak, Inc., will present a slide show and
speak about the Flexible Packaging
Industry. Please try to attend; I am sure
you will find this presentation very
interesting.
As we go about our daily activities
over the rest of this summer, please be
careful and don't forget to keep our sick
members in your daily prayers, especially
our past president Noble Ted Barkley,
who is being treated for prostate cancer.
Looking forward to seeing you in
September. In the meantime, God bless
you, and thank you for your support.

The Conrad Ruth Outing in June

The second event, which was hosted

On behalf of the Colonel's Staff, I would
like to thank everyone who supported

Everyone had a great time.
As we wind down from summer, I'd
like to thank all who supported Boumi

I hope that all of you are planning
to attend. It's always a great time in

As we move into October, Boumi will
be participating in the P.R.A.D. Parade
in Solomons, Md., on Sunday, Oct. 7.
This is a duty call and lineup is at 1 p.m.

I look forward to getting back to our
usual gatherings at Boumi.

Steel Drum Band
Hillbilly Clan #67
Hope all band members enjoyed their summer time with
family and friends. In July, four members of the band
attended the Imperial Session in Charlotte, N.C. The weather
was great, but hot. Due to limited members able to play in
the parade, members marched with the Boumi Units.
We have received our new drums and, with a donation
from Potentate Carl Weiss III, we were able to pay out the
cost of the equipment. With new drums and additional
practices with our drum teacher, we are well on our way to
be on the street with the Temple. We still need additional
drum members and a driver for our float for upcoming
parades during the fall and winter seasons. The unit now has
a uniform, and new shirts are on order for band members at
a reasonable cost.
Our monthly practices are on the second and fourth
Wednesdays of the month at 1 p.m., after the Temple
luncheon. The end-of-month practices will also be our
monthly business meetings.
Please remember our shut-ins and sick members with
your calls, cards and prayers.
In the Faith,
Tom Downey
Howdy Cuzzins,
We took in five more members. The Grand and
Glorious Hillbilly Degree was presented at our July
meeting. Please attend our meetings and meet our newest
Hillbillies. Don't forget to do some recruiting on your
own. The initiation fee is only $25 and there are never
any dues. It's a great deal.
It took a while, but your Clan is on the rebound.
Attendance at our meetings has also picked up. Come out

The International Hillbilly Convention is Oct. 3 through
7 in Charleston, S.C. Let Rabban of the Clan Vernon

Our last two scheduled meetings for 2012 are Sept. 11

Daughters of the Nile
Zitta Temple #27
Laura Bell, Queen
Fraternal Greetings,
Since I last wrote, we had the honor
of hosting her Supreme Majesty Suzie
Schumacher. The July Supreme Queen
visit was a banner day for our temple,
as we welcomed five new members.
Congratulations to Princesses Rochelle
Bell, Patience Hein, Kathleen Palmer,
Alyson Rich, and Francene Seigel.
The Supreme Queen was most
impressed with the Boumi facility and
she commented on what a wonderful
job the Ladies of the Household did in
the ceremonial. She also witnessed a
first that day, as she had never seen the
men perform with the ladies. She said
the energy of the Boumi Drum Corps
and the Daughters of the Nile Patrol
was a true inspiration for her. I told her
that we have a very special relationship
with our nobles, and that we work
very well together in our endeavors to
support the temple and the children.
Thank you to the Illustrious Potentate
Carl Weiss III and all the dignitaries
who brought greetings at the banquet.
While the Supreme Queen was in
the area, I had the honor of traveling
to El Manrah Temple in Alexandria,
Alah Temple in Philadelphia, Ozemb
Temple in Harrisburg, and Re Temple
in Cumberland.
Later this summer we had our
annual picnic and our Labor Day shoe
sale. I hope everyone who participated
enjoyed the events. Fall finds us back
in session on Sept. 18, and preparing
for our membership brunch on Oct.
6, Quarter Auction on Oct. 12, and
Queens Tea on Nov. 11. We look
forward to sponsoring these events,
and your participation and support is
most appreciated.
Did you know the Daughters of
the Nile donated 1.5 million dollars
last year to the Shriners Hospital for
Children? We were honored to put a
$3,000,000 plaque in the Philadelphia
Hospital in July. If any ladies with
Masonic affiliation are interested in
becoming a member of Zitta Temple
No. 27, please contact our membership
chairman Joan Mezoff at 410-661-4367.
We would be happy to welcome you.

all the Clowns and Clownettes for their

Then to top off the summer, we have
the 70th Mid-Atlantic Shrine Convention
in Virginia Beach Sept. 6 through 8.
We will be staying at the Holiday Inn
on 21st Street. More events are in the
planning stages, and information will be
forthcoming as it is available.

please join us this September. The
meetings are the fourth Monday
of the month from September

We meet on the fourth Tuesday

Off Roaders
Noble Tim Waire Sr.
Captain
Provost Guard
Greetings from the Off Roaders. By the time you read
this, you're probably getting ready for the Virginia Beach
convention. Our drivers are all practiced and ready to enter
the competition and do the parade and, of course, bring
home a trophy or two.
Our Bull & Shrimp feast back in July went well. We
thank everyone who supported us and hope they got
enough good food and enjoyed the camaraderie. We still
have our Vacation Raffle coming up and the drawing will
be in Virginia Beach; you do not have to be present to win.
Sorry to report that our member Bill Gassaway, also
past captain of the Motor Corps and past colonel, has had
serious medical problems. After having bypass surgery,
some new problems developed and, as of this writing, he is
still hospitalized. We are praying for his recovery.
On a lighter note, Frank Whay's twin daughters, who
were just infants when he joined Boumi, are grown up now.
Ashley will be getting married this month and Brittany is
graduating from college. We are all excited for Helen and
Frank. Congratulations!
Also, we congratulate Steve and Bobi Kolbe on that big
move. They are all settled in their new residence. We wish
you the best of luck.
Your next issue of Boumi News will be the last for 2012,
but there are still lots of activities we will take part in. We
remind all nobles to show up to support your Divan at the
Boumi Business Meeting.

LADIES'
AFTERNOON TEA
Mort Marlow passed away. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to
his family. Please keep Mike Kuriny in your prayers as he faces
health problems. It was good to see Tom and Betty Howard at
our last meeting. Congratulations to Herman Gonzalez on his
election as lieutenant colonel of the MASA Provost.
The Provost Guard provided staffing for the morning
shift at the Maryland State Fair. We had fun and the
beverages that we distributed were cold.
The Provost Guard will be the Honor Guard at the
September Boumi Business Meeting and will hopefully be
in our new uniforms. This is a duty call so govern yourself
accordingly. We have taken in three new members—attend
a meeting and meet these new nobles. If you have an old
Provost Uniform and are not going to be in Boumi Parades,
please return them to the Provost. Remember, they are the
property of the Shrine. We have members who want to be in
parades and need a uniform. Please help.
If you're interested in the new Provost black polo shirt,
talk to John English at one of our meetings. The new
Provost uniform coats are available at Cohen's Clothiers
in Cockeysville—the contact there is Jay. The jackets are
available in all sizes. Contact the Commander for more
information.
The Provost will participate in the Solomon's Island parade

Before beginning our summer break,
Bou-Tem-Sci members and guests
attended the June Outing. This year
we went on a bus trip to the Rainbow
Dinner Theater in Lancaster, Pa. After
a delicious lunch, we saw the comedy
show "Things My Mother Taught Me."
Everyone had a most enjoyable time.
Many thanks to Lois Robinson, 1st vice
president, for planning this fun trip.
With summer coming to an end, our
regular meetings will begin on Sept. 17
at Columbus Gardens. It will be great
to welcome everyone back. The social
hour starts at 11 a.m. After lunch, Mr.
Tim Hall, a comedian and magician,
will entertain us. The business meeting
will follow. We have a most exciting
year ahead. Please come join us!
The Bou-Tem-Sci Club will celebrate
our 80th Annual Charity Benefit "Hops
of Hope" on Oct. 15 at Columbus
Gardens. Invite your friends and family
to attend this very special event. Enjoy an
afternoon of fellowship while shopping
the bountiful bazaar tables (baked
goodies, treasure/collectibles, jewelry)
and buying raffle tickets to win some
great prizes (Potentate's gift, Baskets
of Pleasure, 50/50). After a luscious
luncheon, we will be entertained by a
fabulous fashion show presented by
Dress Barn and Poor Little Rich Girl.
Our theme "Hops of Hope" illustrates
our mission to provide corrective shoes
for children in need of special footwear
to ease their pain and discomfort. Your
participation will help us continue our
philanthropic endeavors.
If you are requesting a flyer or have
any questions, please contact Nancy
Ritter, 2nd vice president and benefit
chairperson, at 410-747-9112 or
443-604-3401. Tickets for this event are
$28. Mark your calendars to attend this
special benefit!

It's good to be back in Baltimore. We
had a great time in Charlotte, N.C.,
for the Imperial Convention, but there
is work to be done to get ready for
Virginia Beach.
Thank you to all the members who
went to Charlotte and all those who
supported me back at home.
Special thanks to 1st Lt. Ken Daniel
for holding down the fort and to Past
Captain Wayne Snyder for organizing
the parades and calling the routines.
We had a good turn out for all of the
parades and made the Temple proud.
We have weekly drill practice at the
White Marsh Mall JCPenny lot. Even
if you aren't going to MASA, come out
and spend time with the other Motor
Corps members and learn some of the
drill routines.

Camel Wheels
Tony Fusco
Captain
The Camel Wheels had a busy summer participating in
several parades celebrating the Memorial Day and Fourth
of July holidays, as well as the Imperial Parade in Charlotte,
N.C. They also attended the MASA Convention, which was
held in Virginia Beach, Va., where they competed in the
parade, as well as attended many other Shrine activities.
In July, the Camelettes sponsored their annual
performance with the Community College of Baltimore
performing "Sunset Boulevard" at Essex Community
College. A reception was held prior to the event and dessert
was served at intermission. There was a great turnout, and
all who attended enjoyed the evening.
The Camelettes have also been busy planning their next
event called Heart of Rock 'n' Roll, featuring The Legendary
Crystals, The Ronnie Dove Show, and Gene Vincentt & The
Cadillac Cruisers with the Road House Horns. This fun
evening will take place at the Boumi Shrine on Saturday,
Oct. 27. Tickets are $70 and include an elegant bull and
oyster menu and refreshments. The doors will open at
6 p.m., and the show begins at 7 p.m. Don't miss out on
this amazing event! For more information or to purchase
tickets, please call 443-790-9133.

Noble Tom Downey
Chief
We hope everyone had a super summer. No need to
mention the hot and humid days we've had. Chief Tom
Downey wishes to thank all Ambassadors and their friends
who attended the crab feast in August.
Our chief would like to remind everyone that, due to
the MASA Convention in Virginia Beach in September, we
will not have our regular meeting in September. Our next
meeting will be on Thursday, Oct. 4 at Snyder's Restaurant.
It will be Past Chief 's Night. Our Nov. 1 meeting will be at
Boumi Shrine.
Again, we will be joining the Scimeter Club for a
spectacular Christmas Party on Dec. 7 at Boumi Shrine.
Mark your calendar for all these events.
Nobles, please remember our sick and shut-in members.
If you know of any, please call PC Maurice Dashiell at
410-827-8272 or Noble Joe Blevins at 410-798-9290 and let
them know. They will pass the information on to us.

W
ell, we have survived another hot and humid
Baltimore (Boumi) summer, and the Illustrious Sir
F. Carl Weiss III and his Divan have returned safely from
an interesting Imperial Shrine Convention in Charlotte,
N.C. Besides being hot, it was a successful summer for
Boumi Temple; we obligated 54 new nobles, had another
successful Boumi Carnival (the rain stayed away), and
represented the Temple well at MASA in Virginia Beach.
Now it is time to get on with Shrine business, complete
the year, and consider your tax-deductible contributions,
if you haven't already done so. Many nobles and friends
make their donations in the latter part of the year to the
Shriners Hospitals for Children. There are several methods
available for your consideration.
The Shriners Hospitals Fund accepts contributions to the
Hospitals "In Honor of," "In Memory of," "Recovery from
an Illness," or just a general contribution. The Hospital
Transportation Fund donations are used for expenses
incurred by Boumi Temple for transporting patients to the
Philadelphia and other Shriner Hospitals. Also, there is
the 100 Million Dollar Club, where you can contribute "In
Honor of," to memorialize a family member or a business
associate, and to celebrate a marriage or anniversary, the
birth of a child or grandchild, or the birthday of a special
friend. The choice is yours.
I hope you will choose to donate to the 100 Million
Dollar Club. Don't let the amount scare you—it only
takes a one-time donation of $100 to join, but you can
donate more and often if you desire. Why not return the
enrollment form on this page today with your check for

“There was a friend whose heart was good. He walked with men and understood. His was a
voice that spoke to cheer, and felt like music on the ear. His was a smile men loved to see. His

on, his is a fame that never ends—He leaves behind countless friends.”
