period is a few minutes longer than
24 hours, but it may be mostly
absent in persons who lack functional retinas or optic nerves to
transmit information about light

melatonin and cortisol medication
to regulate the biological clock so
they can more easily accommodate
the daily schedules of sighted persons.
Farmers are especially aware of
diurnal and seasonal cycles of the
animals they raise, but usually they
are not aware that farming mishaps in the U.S. resulting in injury
or death are more likely to occur
in the late afternoon. Recently
released data about Irish farmers
indicates a similar pattern.
Not surprisingly, the late
afternoon is when the most traffic crashes occur throughout the
world. The flow of bodily hormones that keep people alert is at
its lowest then.
Heart attacks, the common
name for the occurrence of blood
clots in the heart’s arteries, are
most likely to occur between 4 and
5:00 a.m., when cortisol release is
greatest.
Disruptions to the diurnal
cycle, such as working occasional
night-time shifts that are not consistent over several-week periods and interfere with usual sleep
patterns, also are associated with
higher rates of work-related mistakes.
Farm livestock go about their
daily activities with fewer interruptions than the people who raise
them. Animals’ diurnal rhythms
can help farmers manage their own
cycles.

This model was developed to
predict the soybean maturity
date (R8) based on accumulated GDD from the planting
date.
Based on 1,816 data points,
a regression analysis was performed that predicted 1,694,
1,890 and 2,058 average GDD
to maturity for 00.8, 0.5 and
1.1 RM soybeans, respectively.

The other day, I walked out the
front door of my home and was divebombed by a robin. I felt her wings
graze my head.
I squealed and ran down the sidewalk. A person walking down the
sidewalk looked at me with curiosity.
My daughter had warned me that
we had an “angry bird” in a nest close
to our front door. I noticed two robins had set up a parental surveillance
system in our front yard. Female robins have duller-colored feathers than
males, so this was my introduction to
“Mother Robin.”
I sneaked back to our front step
and peeked toward the crook of a tree
to see three fuzzy baby birds with
open mouths waiting to be fed.
I could see Father Robin, with his
brighter plumage, collecting worms.
Male robins also help their offspring
learn to live on their own. The robins’
sons and/or daughters are well taken
care of by their doting parents until
they “fledge,” or leave the nest.
The Robinsons get to watch them
from a distance, through a window
near the tree, where they are safe
from dive-bombing birds. Whenever
I am on our front doorstep, I do not
look at the nest. Mother Robin has
her eye on me and squawks loudly.
“Mother Robinson” (yes, that’s
me) also has three kids in our nearby
nest, but two of them will be leaving
later this summer. Our oldest will
move to an apartment, our middle
child will move to a dormitory, and
our 12-year-old will get a lot of attention at home.
Lately, collecting things to feather
their future nests has been my priority.
What exactly do you need to set
up a household, especially a kitchen?
If you’re assembling a kitchen
or downsizing, be sure to have certain items on hand. Besides dishes
and utensils, you will need pots and
pans, knives, a plastic cutting board,
measuring cups and spoons, mixing
bowls, stirring spoons, a whisk and
a can opener. Some small household
appliances are handy, too, such as an
electric mixer, microwave oven and
toaster oven. Most of us need a coffee
maker, too.
Organization helps, especially
if your new space is a compressed
version of your old space. For quick
cooking, organize your kitchen so
your equipment is within easy reach.
When cooking for one or two, be
sure to choose recipes that are easy
to divide mathematically. Sometimes
you have to try some little tricks to
make recipes work.
For example, in recipes calling for
three eggs, use two eggs and remove
2 to 4 tablespoons of liquid (if present) from the recipe. If a recipe calls
for a can of beans or soup and you
would like to divide the recipe in half,
use what you need and refrigerate or
freeze the remaining beans or soup.
Be sure to label the container with the
contents and date.
When resizing recipes that
include herbs and spices, add the seasonings gradually. Sometimes you
may need to add more (or less) of the
spice to reach the desired flavor.
Be sure to check for doneness
of halved recipes five to 10 minutes sooner than the original recipe.
Always be sure to keep notes about
what works and what doesn’t.
If you really like your larger-sized
recipes, think of the extra servings of
food as “planned overs” instead of
leftovers. You can use planned-over
macaroni to make pasta salad or
quick casseroles. Add planned-over
vegetables or meat to homemade
soup or stir-fry.
Try some easy-to-assemble foods
or use “speed scratch” cooking techniques, where you add some fresh
ingredients to convenience foods:
• Make minipizzas by topping
English muffins with planned-over
spaghetti sauce, vegetables and
shredded cheese.
• Add chopped onions, mushrooms, peppers and cooked meat to
canned spaghetti sauce. Serve spaghetti sauce over noodles one day,
then add kidney beans and chili seasoning for another meal.
• Top a microwave-baked potato
or sweet potato with planned-over
chili and cheese.
• Mix chopped yellow squash,
green peas and grated carrots with a
prepared rice mix.
• Spice up canned tomato soup by
adding chopped green onion, celery
and some garlic powder.

This recipe is courtesy of the Midwest
Dairy Council. This recipe makes
four servings, which is enough for a
dinner for two, plus two lunches.
Cheeseburger Macaroni Casserole
Nonstick cooking spray
1 pound lean ground beef
1/2 c. chopped onion
1 c. whole-wheat elbow macaroni
(or penne or rotini pasta)
1 medium tomato, chopped
1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt,
optional
1/4 tsp. black pepper
1 c. shredded cheese
Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray an
8- by 8-inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray; set aside. In
large skillet over medium heat, cook
ground beef and onion until beef is
brown and onion is soft; drain. Cook
macaroni according to package directions; drain. Spoon macaroni into
prepared pan. Spread beef mixture
and chopped tomato over macaroni.
Pour tomato sauce over beef. Sprinkle with seasoned salt, pepper and
shredded cheese. Cover loosely with
foil and bake for 35 minutes or until
cheese is melted and edges of casserole are bubbling.
Makes four servings. Each serving has 140 calories, 7 grams (g) fat,
7 g protein, 13 g carbohydrate, 2 g
fiber and 330 milligrams sodium. It
also provides 15 percent of the daily
recommendation for calcium.

Try these 4 tips for healthful celebrations
Here we go again in the Robinson household. Another child is all
grown up and graduating from high
school this year. I had a three-year
break from the last child’s graduation, but the time flew by.
The other day, my daughter and
I began making plans for the party
with her godmother’s willing assistance. My 17-year-old daughter
never has been “demanding,” so we
had to coax her food wishes from
her.
I have attended parties with
meals ranging from root beer
floats to pancakes and sausage to
full-scale spaghetti and meatball
dinners. My friends used to have
“theme” parties and receptions,
such as all white food, all red food
or all round food. That brought out
the creativity in people.
After our brainstorming session, my daughter was fine with
the standard “afternoon fare” with
some of her favorite items such as
cheese and crackers, small sandwiches, salads and cupcakes, plus
some veggies and fruits thrown in
the mix. She wasn’t going to escape
fruits and veggies. I’m not sure she
realizes that she will be wearing an
apron, helping us prepare the foods.
Celebrations often are exciting
and memorable times filled with
family, friends and food. Nourish your body every time you eat,
whether you are celebrating a birthday, graduation, wedding shower,
holiday or every day. Here are some
tips and resources to help plan any
size party:
• Incorporate at least three different food groups into celebration
foods. MyPlate, the current dietary
guidelines for Americans, includes
five food groups: grains, vegetables, fruits, protein and dairy. When
deciding on the menu, think how
you can incorporate at least three of
these food groups.
For example, make sandwiches with whole-grain breads
or use whole-grain pasta in salads.
Include a colorful vegetable tray
on the menu. Consider having fruit
parfaits instead of cake as a sweet
treat. If you like cake, how about
mini cupcakes or muffins, such as
the recipe included with this column? Portion size matters.
If you decide to have a fullscale meal, be sure to use lean or
extra-lean beef and poultry in sandwiches and casseroles. For snacks,
consider serving hummus (made
from protein-rich chickpeas) as a
tasty dip with pita chips. See the

• Explore ingredient substitutions. You easily can trim calories and/or add fiber, vitamins and
minerals with healthful swaps. For
example, you can use fruit purees
for one-half or more of the fat in
baked products. You can substitute
whole-wheat flour for half of the allpurpose flour in a recipe (2 cups of
flour equals 1 cup of whole-wheat
flour plus 1 cup of all-purpose

• Make food fun with a do-ityourself meal. Get kids (and adults)
involved in assembling their meal.

• Remember to keep hot foods
hot and cold foods cold. Hold
cooked or reheated food above 140
F. Place the food in hot-holding
equipment, such as chafing dishes,
slow cookers and warming trays.
Reheat previously prepared food to
165 F, using a stove, oven or microwave oven.
Keep cold foods at or below 40
F by nesting serving plates or bowls
in containers of ice. To learn more

Here’s a recipe we might try
for my daughter’s graduation party.
It was a big hit in taste testing on
campus. Pumpkin is a nutrientrich ingredient that is high in betacarotene, which our body uses to
produce vitamin A. Getting enough
vitamin A in our diet helps keep our
skin and eyes healthy.
Whole-wheat Mini Pumpkin
Muffins
1 3/4 c. whole-wheat flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
2 large eggs, room temperature
1/2 c. brown sugar, lightly
packed
1 c. pumpkin puree
1/3 c. unsalted butter, melted
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/3 c. milk
1/2 c. mini chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease
muffin tins; set aside. In a large
bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon
and pumpkin pie spice together;
set aside. In another large bowl,
whisk eggs, brown sugar, pumpkin, melted butter, vanilla and milk
together until combined. Gradually
add the dry ingredients to the wet
ingredients. Stir to combine. Fold
in mini chocolate chips. Fill muffin
cups three-fourths full. Bake for 12
to 14 minutes or until a toothpick
inserted in the center comes out
clean. Cool slightly and serve.
Makes 36 servings. Each serving has 60 calories, 3 gram (g) fat,
1 g protein, 9 g carbohydrate, 1 g
fiber and 90 milligrams sodium.

All dogs need a rabies vaccination regardless of condition,
management or feeding program
because the only defense against
rabies is the maintenance of a good
immune system. The need for a
good immune system also is true for
cattle.
This discussion is for all living
things, but for simplicity, let’s stick
to cattle or those critters found near
cattle.
Recently, our dogs received their
vaccinations. The rabies vaccination
for dogs is the most accepted vaccination protocol when the discussion of animal vaccinations comes
up, and it’s repeated throughout the
dog’s lifetime. Some owners will
grumble when the renewal time
comes up, but few actually will not
proceed with the vaccination.
Recently, while at the veterinarian’s office, a truck pulled up. The
rambunctious pack of dogs leapt
around in the truck box, barking at
a fairly frantic pace. In the end, they
all were vaccinated and life went on.
So why all this discussion about
the pros and cons of cattle vaccinations? Being confused by the claims
of pharmaceutical companies is
easy, but in reality, the focus needs
to be on the goal, the achievement
of the desired level of immunity
within the herd.
Understanding the principals
involved is difficult. Textbooks with
complicated concluding statements
are written yearly on vaccinations.
But keep the goal in mind: Immunity is not absolute and, just like in
the rabies vaccination, does not last
forever. Immunity changes constantly and is different for each and
every pathogen with which cattle
may come into contact.
To further complicate achieving the goal, individual cattle will
differ in their level of immunity to
the same pathogen. Plus, one animal
may receive a much greater exposure than another animal. No system
is perfect.
The goal is to build an acceptable level of herd immunity to the
disease-causing pathogens so outbreaks are isolated cases and the
cattle population remains healthy.
A broad vaccination program builds
immunity within the general population, effectively limiting the capacity of pathogens to spread freely.
However, this does not mean the
total absence of pathogens nor the
elimination of sporadic outbreaks
of a disease, even though vaccination protocols are applied by the
producer in concert with the local
veterinarian. The goal is to limit
susceptible cattle, thus limiting the
spread of the disease.
Proper management enables
cattle to withstand the daily issues
of maintaining health and vigor, but
a properly prepared and challenged
immune system is critical to total
herd resistance to local pathogens.
The basic concept of immunity
is relatively simple. The body reacts
to foreign objects by developing
defensive antibodies. Whenever
I bring up the topic of immunity,
I cannot help but be reminded of
the old game of Pac-Man, a computer game created in 1980 by Toru
Iwatani while working for Namco,
a Japanese company. Pac-Man was
a circular object with a large mouth
that had only one function: catch
and consume little dots. Pac-Man
would move up and down channels
not much different from our circulatory system’s arteries or veins, systematically removing all the dots.
Pac-Man, a large body chasing little
dots, was not that much different
from nature: the large “antibody” in
the circulatory system chasing and
eating small dotlike intruders.
The key to good health is to have
the proper Pac-Man, or antibody,
present within the living system to
catch all the dots or invading bugs:
viruses, bacteria or other foreign
substances.
Each antibody (or immunoglobulin, if you like big words) is very
specific, only consuming or catching one type of foreign bug. A good
vaccination protocol, established
by the local veterinarian, encourages the Pac-Man-enabling process
and preps the cattle in case of future
exposure.
Did I say exposure? Yes, I did.
Unfortunately, vaccine discussions
often fail to include exposure. Let’s
go back to the vaccination of dogs
for rabies. If a dog never is exposed
to rabies, was the vaccination ineffective? No, the vaccine established immunity in case the dog
was exposed to rabies in the future.
What are the odds of the dog being
exposed?
Likewise, if all dogs were not
vaccinated, what would be the odds
of an increased incidence of rabies?

Contact your local veterinarian,
get started, get prepared and establish an immunity goal appropriate
for your region and your desired
calf market for your best chance of
calf survival in the real world.
May you find all your ear tags.
We know the answer. If no dogs are
vaccinated, the incidence of rabies
would go up.
Thus, get some input from the
local veterinarian. The vaccine
primes the system so someday, in
the event of a real invasion, antibodies are ready because an effective

Cooling assistance is
available to low-income
individuals with medical
needs
With hot temperatures and
high humidity arriving in the
state, the North Dakota Department of Human Services and
the North Dakota Department of
Commerce’s Division of Community Service reminds North
Dakotans that cooling assistance
is available for seniors or people
with certain medical conditions
who qualify for the Low Income
Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).
“The summer heat can create challenges for people with
health issues,” said Carol Cartledge, North Dakota Department
of Human Services Economic
Assistance Division director.
“The cooling assistance program
makes funds available to eligible
low-income households and our
most vulnerable citizens to help
prevent heat-related illnesses.”
Program funds can be used
to assist qualifying households
to purchase and install an air
conditioning unit, repair an air
conditioning unit, or to purchase
oscillating or window fans. Work
is completed by a Community
Action agency located in the
state’s eight largest cities.
To qualify, current energy
assistance clients under 60 years
of age need a signed statement
from a physician, physician
assistant, nurse practitioner, or
public health nurse verifying
their medical condition and the
need for a cooled living space.
They must provide that information to the county social service
office. Clients age 60 and over
are not required to get documentation of a medical need.
People who are not currently
energy assistance program clients may also qualify. A threeperson household earning up to
$44,717 per year may qualify if
their assets meet program limits.

historically worked together in
partnership with county social
service offices to address the
heating and cooling needs of
low-income individuals.
LIHEAP is a federally-funded
program that primarily helps
qualifying households pay for
heating needs. This past heating season, the program served
around 12,000 households in the
state. Last summer, 200 households participated in the cooling
assistance program.
