Is spanking an appropriate method
of discipline for children?
Spanking is a controversial
method of disciplining children.
There are many adherents to the
maxim: Spare the rod and spoil the
child. At the other end of the spectrum are most pediatricians, family
counselors and social workers who
contend spanking as a routine practice isn’t beneficial and can worsen
behavior problems.
Does spanking help or harm
children? A follow-up question concerns children with attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD):
Does spanking improve the management of ADHD behavior?
Let’s look first at spanking as a
method of child discipline. According to a 2010 UNICEF survey of 33
countries around the world, half the
sampled children in the surveyed
countries were punished physically
by spanking. In the U.S. two-thirds
of young children were disciplined
by spanking between the ages of
19-35 months.

Auditions for ‘The Frog Prince’ set
at LaMoure Musical Theatre
Deep in the royal swamp,
a lonely Frog retrieves a
golden ball for Princess Prim
in exchange for friendship and
comfort. The spoiled princess
doesn’t want to live up to her
part of the bargain, and puts
her royal Knights on alert.
And so the trouble begins.
Luckily, Frog gets some good
advice from Ollie the wise old
Aspen tree, the well-read Alligator, and the kindly Swamp
Things. The Ducks, a busy
Fly, and dancing Flamingos
also come to Frog’s assistance
as the Frog’s kindly servant
tirelessly tries to set things
right. Even the Queen, kindly
Princess Proper, and spunky
Princess Peppy get involved
and, despite the trouble caused
by the nasty Venus Fly Traps,
all ends happily
An audition will be held
for Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) production of
THE FROG PRINCE on Monday July 25 at 1:00 in the
LaMoure County Memorial
Park Auditorium. Those auditioning should arrive before
1:00 and plan to stay for a full
two hours. Some of the cast
members will be asked to stay
for a rehearsal immediately
following the audition.
Among the 50-60 roles to
be cast are three sisters – who
also happen to be Princesses,
two students to play the lonely
Frog, Ollie the Aspen Tree,
bumbling Knights, kindly
Swamp Things, the well-read
Alligator, fancy Flamingos,
helpful Ducks, a busy Fly and
the nasty Venus Fly Traps. All
students, entering 1st through
12th grade, are encouraged to
audition. No advance prepara-
tion is necessary. Assistant
Directors will also be cast
to assist with the technical
aspects of the production.
THE FROG PRINCE is
part of Missoula Children’s
Theatre’s unique international
touring project. MCT touring productions are complete
with costumes, scenery, props
and makeup. The MCT Tour
Actor/Directors will conduct
rehearsals throughout the
week from 1:00 to 5:30 each
day.
THE FROG PRINCE will
be presented on Friday and
Saturday, July 29 & 30 at 8:00
pm in the LaMoure County
Memorial Park Auditorium.
The Missoula Children’s Theatre residency in LaMoure
County is brought to you by
LaMoure County Summer
Musical Theatre.

Dr. Rosmann
of research involving 160,000 children by investigators at the University of Texas and the University of
Michigan was published in the Journal of Family Psychology in April
this year.
It concluded: “The more children
are spanked, the more likely they are
to defy their parents and to experience increased anti-social behavior,
aggression, mental health problems
and cognitive difficulties.
Too
often,” one of the investigators (Dr.
Elizabeth Gershoff) said, “Physical punishment doesn’t get kids to
comply, so parents think they have
to keep escalating it. That is why it
is dangerous.”
The American Academy of
Pediatrics and the American Psychological Association recommend
that the parents reduce and potentially eliminate physical punishment,
noting that physical punishment is
only temporarily effective and may
encourage some children to treat others cruelly.
The United Nations entered the
discussion of corporal discipline of
children in 2007 when it adopted a
resolution that said “Corporal punishment and other cruel or degrading forms of punishment are forms
of violence.” Article 19 of the UN
Convention on the Rights of the
Child stipulates that children should
be protected from “all forms of physical or mental violence.” Only the
U.S. and Somalia failed to ratify the
resolution.
My opinion is that spanking
might be considered by a parent only
when time-outs and verbal discussions haven’t worked, and to correct
a serious behavioral issue, such as
purposefully and repeatedly biting a
younger sibling. Spankings should
entail only a swat or two on the butt
of the child before age 3.
Spankings seem to do more harm
than good with children older than
3 years. Spankings should never be
administered repeatedly or when the
parent is angry, and should always
accompany a verbal explanation of
why the punishment is being delivered.
Is spanking effective for children
with ADHD who often seem to pay
scant attention to verbal feedback
and time-out? Dr. William Dodson,
a Colorado psychiatrist who works
with many families who have one
or more children with ADHD, says
children with ADHD are especially
sensitive to spankings because they
often have experienced disapproval,
and while they want to do things correctly, they don’t know how.
I can relate to Dodson’s advice.
My decorum in grade school earned
lots of behavior checkmarks on the
(Cont. from pg. 1)
elementary school report cards my
mother saved and which my children
eventually discovered, much to their
glee: Michael lacks self-control,
gets distracted easily, and is strongwilled.
My parents believed that selfcontrol led to success in later life,
and undertook spankings liberally,
like their German ancestors. I didn’t
learn until I was in college how to
control my temper and strong will
and was in my 50s when my inability to sit through long meetings and
little need for sleep subsided.
ADHD diminishes for many
persons as they reach adulthood and
declines even further as they age,
but not for all people with ADHD.
ADHD is a mutation to the DRD4
gene with advantages that are especially well suited for people who
farm, such as curiosity, willingness
to try new things, reduced need for
sleep, and strong will. The mutation
appears about four times more often
in most sampled farmers than in
persons not involved in agricultural
occupations.
See the Farm and Ranch Life
article for the last week of May this
year for additional information about
how the perception of ADHD is long
overdue and actually benefits many
people, especially farmers. A 1999
book by Thom Hartmann, Attention
Deficit Disorder: A Different Perception, was among the first to call attention to the developing literature that
offered a positive view of ADHD
behaviors, but the genetic information about the increased expression
of the DRD4 mutation in the agricul-
tural population is more recent.
The research literature about
ADHD is replete with advisories
against the use of corporal punishment for children with ADHD.
Some parents and caregivers persist
in physically disciplining children
with ADHD nonetheless.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention encourages
parents and caregivers of children
with ADHD to undertake behavior
counseling to learn the skills to deal
with their hyperactive but curious
children when they misbehave, such
as redirection, extending periods of
concentration, and other beneficial
practices.
