It’s hard to believe that she is a mother of two – with another baby on the way! As she settles down for a quick breakfast and prep time, we ask her what styling tips she can give women on the go to help them look and feel beautiful. “For a woman like me that plays many roles, I go for skin care products that multi-task. The precious minutes you save spell extra time with the family. I really like washing my face with Pond’s facial washes. They do such a great job that they eliminate the need for a toner and makeup remover,” enthused Rissa. Another one of her favorites is the MAC Mineralized Charged Water Moisture Gel, which she described as an excellent moisturizer that also preps your skin before makeup. She’s also really gaga right now over the Pond’s Age Miracle BB Cream SPF 30 PA++. “It’s my sunblock, anti-aging cream and makeup rolled into one!” she exclaimed. She described her fashion style as a fusion of clean, timeless and the unexpected. “If anything, I always keep in mind that I won’t regret what I’m wearing. I don’t want it to look ‘dated.’ When I look at my photos 10 years from now, I want to say WOW and not WHOOPS. But that doesn’t mean I have to be boring and safe,” she said. While she used to be a very trendy and impulsive shopper, she said that she has grown in confidence over the years on what clothes to wear and now has fun injecting trends through great accessories, flea market finds, and oneof-a-kind accessories from her travels. And Rissa certainly has a lot to be happy about – her weekly fashion and beauty advice column in The Philippine Star called “Style S.O.S.” remains a must-read for the city’s fashionistas, she’s a sought after modeling instructor, an endorser for a top beauty brand, and even recently launched her own make-up line called Happy Skin. “It has always been my dream to have my own makeup line - the kind which allows me to be hands-on with creating, formulating, testing everything from the start. What fueled this dream of mine was how hard it was to find good makeup for morenas when I first started modeling ten years ago. Even as a beauty columnist, I’ve always been proud to be brown and dreamed to create the perfect makeup line that would wonderfully celebrate Filipina skin,” she explained. To find out more about happyskincosmetics.com Her top three style staples include a beautifully bold necklace, which she said could be the star of a relatively simple outfit (with other pieces playing a supporting role); dresses, which flow over a woman’s flaws, hug the right places and are reliable pieces that never fail to make a woman feel remarkable, and finally, a great pair of heels, which instantly transform outfits from simple to stunning and makes a woman’s legs look better. But her ultimate secret to looking young and beautiful is simple. “The better you take care of your skin, the better you look,” she Happy Skin, visit www. A Model Mom Aside from her busy career, what keeps Rissa fulfilled is her family, as she describes herself as a very hands-on mom to her kids Enzo and Celestia, who just turned one recently. She is also currently 3 months pregnant and is expecting another little angel on the way! Rissa’s Top 3 Style Staples: a beautifully bold necklace, dresses and a great pair of heels! “It doesn’t matter if it costs P50 or P5000. As long as I intensely love it, I wear it the way I want to and make it my own,” added Rissa. 26 answered. “Also aspire for peace of mind and genuine happiness. The happier you are in life, the more beautiful you are going to be on the outside.” “I’m very involved with both my children. I’m a strict disciplinarian. But I’m generous with support, encouragement, affection and praise. I embrace the role of mom passionately as it empowers me to be able to mould a person’s mind. I love teaching as well as learning something new everyday with my children. If there’s one thing my kids have taught me, I’m always reminded that it’s the simple things that count,” Rissa said. Rissa shared that her favorite bonding moments were sharing stories over dinnertime with Enzo and reading books to Celestia. She also enjoys trying different restaurants and cooking together at home, spending many hours in the bookstores during the weekends (as they all love to read) and also traveling together. Her husband Paolo Trillo is also always there for Rissa and his children. He met Rissa when she was still President of Professional Models Association of the Philippines (PMAP) and they were looking for a venue for their Christmas Party. “I was a Managing Partner of a resto bar at that time and so we met during their ocular visit. I remember being attracted to her right away!” he said. 27 He recalled being drawn by her pretty face and adorable smile (with that dimple of course!), but what really attracted Paolo was Rissa’s demeanor – which he described as “poised and appealing, yet very unassuming at the same time.” Though he recently took on a new position as Team Manager of Talk N’ Text Tropang Texters in the PBA, he still makes sure to have time for his family, whether it’s just hanging out, occasionally cooking a meal or barbecue at home or going out for a meal or movie. Rissa also reminds women that it’s okay to take some me-time too, to relax and de-stress. “Love yourself! It’s important that you take care of yourself. You owe it not just to your family and your husband but to yourself too. When you feel great, it resonates to others and you can do the most amazing things,” she said. She makes it a point to make time to do things with somebody that has nothing to do with work like meeting up with friends for dinner or seeing a new movie with her family. A trip to the spa or the salon is a great way to unwind too, Rissa advised. She also enjoys going to Eastwood Mall, where she has had countless memorable dinners with her solid barkada of 20 years, where they’ve announced wedding engagements, met new boyfriends, and celebrated traditional Christmas dinners. “When I instantly need a fashionable outfit, Eastwood Mall, temple to the trendy, always saves the day for me. When the must-see movies are finally out, the cinemas of Eastwood Mall are simply the best!,” she said. Paolo also particularly likes Eastwood Mall. “Everything you need is there and they have a great selection of restaurants. Holiday Traditions Filipinos love to celebrate Christmas and Rissa and her family is certainly no exception! “Not a lot of people know this but I love wrapping. June and December are my favorite times of the year because I get to wrap and label books, school supplies, and Christmas presents,” shared Rissa. She also said that growing up, Noche Buena always felt special as her dad would cook his Filipino dishes while her mom would make her salad and pasta. “It was such a treat to have them cook! It’s nothing grand or extravagant but I’d never trade it even for a king’s feast,” she said. Another wonderful Christmas memory Rissa said, was Christmas morning when she was five years old and saw a huge package wrapped with her name on it. 28 29 “My brother and sister received their dream toys. When I excitedly opened mine, it was a wooden study table with a panel that opened to reveal a chalk board. Inside, too, was a box of colored chalk. I was five years old then. Looking back, I think that’s what fueled me to be a consistent honor student and do well in school,” recalled Rissa. A holiday tradition they also celebrate now is their annual family vacation. “Every year, the Mananquil family - together with everyone’s better halves - goes on a vacation abroad during the holidays. These annual trips are our favorite bonding moments,” she said. For this travel-loving family, more trips together are definitely on their bucket list, with Paolo hoping to visit more of the country’s beautiful beaches. But to cap off their 2013, Rissa and her family will be heading off to spend the holidays in Korea, where they are sure to have a magical and Bedazzling Christmas amidst a winter wonderland! From almost single-handedly swigging down B&T Mexican Kitchen’s notorious slug to getting to know Canada’s national dish at Main Street and learning some wine connoisseur’s vocabulary at Planet Grapes, find out other exciting culinary discoveries and things that Sam Oh loved at Megaworld Lifestyle Mall’s newest dining destination. B&T Mexican Kitchen Main Street Restaurant After taking a short stroll, Sam stopped by Main Street Restaurant, a Canadian-American joint offering a mouthwatering selection of meat dishes, comfort food and desserts. Sam’s first stop was at B&T Mexican Kitchen, a casual family style ‘Tex-Mex’ restaurant that serves mouthwatering, do-it-yourself burritos and tacos as well as other signature Mexican dishes. Sam instantly fell in love with the place, visibly enthralled by the little personal touches that owner Chef Adam Tan gave to the place and the nostalgic ambiance they exude. Sam was so impressed by the homey look of the restaurant that she could not help herself but quiz Chef Adam on almost every minute detail of its design—from his choice of music, his collection of fancy old records, timeworn photographs hanging on the walls and even the font used in the chalkboard-like menu. Upon soaking in the B&T’s casual and laid-back vibe, Sam had a taste of its Ballpark Nachos, Naked Burrito, Shredded Beef Burrito and Wet Lamb Burrito – all of which had her raving with every bite. The fresh ingredients and flavors of the burritos appealed to Sam as much as the generous servings. She particularly singled out the Naked Burrito and Wet Lamb Burrito, which she described as having a different and interesting take on a familiar Mexican favorite. Even while still having a go on the burritos, B&T already had another surprise waiting – the Chipotle Chicken Pizza, a roasted thick tortilla with chipotle adobo sauce, cheese, pico de gallo, fajitas, chipotle chicken and mozarilla cheese. A self-confessed pizza-lover, Sam was so fascinated with the flavorful taste of her new favorite, calling it a no-fail combo. Sam’s hearty meal was capped off by the equally yummy desserts, the freshly and in-house made Tres Leches and the rather odd-sounding Spicy Yema, the rich, sweet, and spicy taste of which had her wanting more. Just when it seemed that entire banquet was done, Sam got a literally big surprise, B&T’s signature drink the Mexican Bulldog, a combination of tequila and margarita and served with a bottle of Corona beer turned upside down in a huge glass. “This is definitely the most unforgettable thing I had here”, Sam said, taking short sips after another, almost in quick succession, leaving the glass almost half-empty. TUSCANY AT MCKINLEY HILL Sam finally had a bite of Main Street’s Crab Cake, which was served with mango salsa. The Crab Cake’s soft, moist and creamy fill and crunchy texture were enough to whet her appetite for the feast to come. “It’s like being instantly transported to a little Italian town, not that I’ve ever been but what I imagine it to be. Quaint and colorful, very charming!” she said, looking more and more enchanted by the scenery’s undeniable charm with her every gaze and step.” Chef Adam introduced Sam to Canada’s national dish, the Poutine, thick cut fries that come with beef gravy and cheese curds. “Where have you been all my life, Poutine? This is total comfort, drunk, stoner food. It’s like a bear hug in food form!” she exclaimed, adding that the dish could have been perfect for the Mexican Bulldog she just had at B&T Mexican Kitchen. “I would definitely tell my good friend to take his wife for their anniversary here”, she said before leaving. Sam was literally lost for words while going through the delightful course of entrees, which included Grilled Steak on Rice, a choice cut Kitayama steak served with rosemary rub, herbed rice and fried egg on top; Grilled Pork Chop, which gets its flavorful taste from its home-made barbeque sauce; and the Chopped Pork Belly, which is served with salsa verde and crostini. The Kitayama steak was a standout for Sam calling it as tender enough and cooked to perfection. Everything ended on a super fun sweet note as Sam tried Main Street’s homemade ice cream, which comes in mouthwateringly sweet flavors like milk and cookie dough, organic maple and candied bacon, smores and malted milk – all of which were ridiculously delicious and divine according to Sam. For restaurant reservations and inquiries, call 0917-815 8187 or send an email to eatmain@gmail.com Shortly after realizing that it was too early in the day to get tipsy, Sam made a vow to slay the Mexican Bulldog with her friends when she comes back. For restaurant reservations and inquiries, call 221-63453/ 0917-8969939. 32 33 TUSCANY AT MCKINLEY HILL Planet Grapes It was late in the afternoon when Sam decided to drop by Planet Grapes, a wine bar where drinking of the world’s most popular beverage is reinvented through the peculiar pairing of wine and exotic Filipino street food. The extensive wine collection, which ranges from fine white classics such as Kunde Family Sauvignon Blanc to rare and premium aged wines like the MV Woodstock Very Old Fortified, intricately spread across the walls of the store compelled Sam to look around, even proceeding to the 2nd level of the wine bar. A fancy wine vending machine tucked in one corner caught the attention of the often sharp-eyed Sam, who was instantly amazed by its innovative features including its ability to dispense certain amounts of wine with just one swipe of a card, which can be bought for as low as P500 and reloaded any time. With the help of the store’s wine connoisseur, one can learn the proper way of appreciating wine, a rather tricky art Sam mastered with undeniable flair. Sam tried two sets of white and red wines, carefully following the correct sequence of proper drinking of wine: pour the wine to the glass, hold the glass by its stem and swirl the wine to gauge its color and consistency, appreciate its scent, take a small sip and play with the liquid inside the mouth to discern its hidden flavors. To get the most out of the wines, Sam was given a selection of finger food, which included Siomai, Baked Camembert Cheese and the good ‘ole Filipino delicacy Balut, which she didn’t take too well. Cheese and wine was a no-brainer for Sam, although she did explain that each of the food served to her produced a different kind of taste when paired with a particular wine. Sam went on with her wine discovery one glass after another while listening intently to the wine expert who heartily shared every bit of thing she knows about wine. After a while, Sam came with a tangy conclusion. “I love that this place is accessible! And there are so many restaurants to choose from” “Planet Grapes is about wine without the drama so people who are intimidated by wine, myself included, could go and relax, have some good wine with good company.” she said, heaping praises to the staff’s flair for wines and for the fruitful experience she just had. For restaurant reservations and inquiries, call 551-3713, visit www.planetgrapes. com.ph or e-mail info@planetgrapes.com.ph. 34 BURGOS CIRCLE AT FORBES TOWN CENTER Christmas is the perfect time to catch up with family and friends over a festive meal. Cooked medium rare to medium are the best ways to appreciate fine meat, which simply means varying shades of red to pink. It should never be fully brown. With that said, we now turn our attention to the variety of very fine steaks available at Melo’s. The Wagyu Rib-Eye is a fool-proof choice if you’re looking for a tender, almost melts-like-butter, full-flavored beef experience. No bone so it’s hassle-free slicing and you can also appreciate the taste of the steak in its glorious simplicity. For those who want a bite in their steaks, those who want to feel the meat -- still tender though -- work in their mouths and appreciate the juices sealed in by perfect searing, the T-Bone (Wagyu, grade 6) will deliver just that. As the cut implies, there’s a bone in this one which not only adds to the flavor but also a little maneuvering with your knife and fork. If you want a smooth take on steak with an opulent play of silky texture, then the Tenderloin (Wagyu) with Foie Gras is your ticket to a heavenly encounter. This boneless cut, absolute tender perfection, with the foie gras bursting in its rich flavor the second it hits your tongue, coating your taste buds with a blanket of buttery goodness. It’s enjoyed best when cooked medium rare as the juices of both the steak and the foie gras are soaked by the bed of mashed potatoes it sits on. Finally, should you feel the need to go all-out, then go with the Prime Porterhouse (dry-aged, highest certified angus beef). Devoid of seasoning, sauces or any kind of marinade, it is with this choice that you will understand my claim that the beef speaks for itself. It has a sweetness to it and even if it has the bone in, the meat melts in your mouth. Melo’s is a discerning carnivore’s paradise. For those who know their steak or would like to explore and know more about choice beef cuts, it’ll be your regular haunt/spot -- and you wouldn’t need an occasion to be there, just the need to have a great ‘meat’-ing place! Italian fare like pizza and pasta have become our go-to food when looking for something to fill us up for hours on end. Cantinetta’s dishes meet your expectations in serving traditional Italian offerings but leave you surprisingly light and guilt-free. All in celebration of the Italian way of eating, dolce gusto -- especially when shared in good company! For starters, the La Maraichere (fresh vegetables) platter is a tangy selection of thinly sliced pickled carrots, celery roots mixed with roulade and a hint of calamansi, thick slices of juicy tomatoes in French dressing, and hard-boiled eggs prepared with home-made mayo and real French mustard. There’s also the Assiette Terroir (cold cuts) platter made up of homemade ham, sausages, rillete, and three kinds of country-style pate -- two of which are duck and the third is pork. The AntiPasti Platter sets you off quite well with their prosciutto with mozzarella on baguettes, and grilled prawns with slices of lemon. This dish with the mix of salty, fried, and grilled samplings is perfect to wake your taste buds for what else is to come. A standout in their pasta selection is the Tartufo, a bold pasta dish given its creamy white sauce with thin slices of parma ham (salty slivers that cut through the rich cream), fresh & dried mushrooms (lovely play on texture and condensed earthy flavor), and truffle oil. However, I personally found eating this dish with the grillata de carne platter (grilled chicken, pork, beef tenderloin, and Italian sausage with pepper sauce) even more satisfying. Should you want to try out pasta with red sauce, the Pescatora Linguini is made up of tangy tomato loaded with seafood like shrimp, squid, mussels and clams. Pair this rich dish with the Cantinetta Classica pizza, topped with pepperoni, thinly sliced bellpeppers, minced beef, Italian sausage and mozzarella. The panna cotta serves as a wonderful finish. This smooth, vanilla-flavored, lighterthan-flan consistency dessert will coat your tongue with a delicate sweetness to tame all the rich flavors you enjoyed in the course of the meal. So if you find yourself in the Burgos Circle area wanting a bite of Italian Cuisine, head over to Cantinetta! For restaurant reservations and inquiries, please call 403-5220. Their soup selection includes La Classique soupe a l’oignon gratinee (classic onion soup baked with grated cheese) and at the time I dropped by, they also had traditional bouillabaisse (fish soup). They aim to offer something new every week, so ask the waiters if they have something special prepared. “Cantinetta’s dishes meet your expectations in serving traditional Italian offerings but leave you surprisingly light and guilt-free. All in celebration of the Italian way of eating, dolce gusto!” Main courses include seafood such as gambas a la Provencale, riz safrani (king prawns flambé in anis liquor with saffron rice) and Saint Jacques a la fondue de poireaux et riz (scallops in creamy leek sauce and saffron rice). Both are very light, very juicy, and colored with lovely reds (ratatouille with the prawns, and tomato salsa with the scallops). You can also try the Tournedos Rossini (beef tenderloin with foie gras) with its thick, creamy duck foie gras sauce. Don’t hold back from scooping the sauce with bread, or swirling your sliced beef in it before taking a bite. They have their foie gras flown in from France every week -- fresh, not frozen. “French dining and indulgence need not be stuffy. It’s all cozy and tasty fun at Cafe de Paris.” Save room for the crème brulee or the fondant Coeur caramel au beurre sale on chocolat (warm chocolate cake with whipped salted butter caramel), that oozes with pure chocolate goodness. Amongst the dishes that stood out for us include their apple baked seafood, swahe shrimps in tea leaves, eight-spiced spare ribs, seafood sotanghon, lapu-lapu with manggo sauce, garlic crabs and their take with the classic Hototay soup. For someone like this writer who grew up eating Chinese-style lauriats, this spread was something new to our palette. Service was impeccable and to top it off, a refreshing dessert of lemongrass with mixed fruit. Definitely worth trying out again! NEWPORT MALL at resorts world manila The Philippine Star’s resident food connoisseur Pepper Teehankee takes his family to a satiating gastronomic discovery at Newport Mall at Resorts World Manila. Get to know more about his culinary expedition as he pursues his passion for eating and find out the things that impressed Manila’ top glitterati and lifestyle authority. Impressions Written by Pepper Teehankee Newport Mall at Resorts World Manila is known to have some really good restaurants that are the city’s best kept secrets. I decided to take my family out one night and randomly try some of them. First stop was Impressions. Any French restaurant in Manila that would discerningly choose to serve Beurre d’ Isigny butter with their homemade breads signified a proper French meal. I had no doubt about this since Impressions was owned by Chef Cyrille Soenen. I have been eating his food since he got to Manila several years ago. He is one of those innovative chefs who personalize his cooking without really veering away from traditional French cuisine. This was evident with my starter, which was Crispy Soft Boiled Egg, Marinated Scallops, Herring Caviar, Watercress, and Asparagus Vichysoisse. The Vichysoisse was rightfully poured only when the bowl was presented to the diner as not to make the crispy soft boiled egg soggy. It was interesting to have a crispy texture outside with the soft oozing egg yolk mixing into the sweet scallops, salty caviar, and creamy soup. My mother tried the Pan Fried Diver Scallops and Mushroom Risotto with Truffles, Seared Duck Liver, Mushroom Emulsion and Parsley jus. Cyrille again keeps the elements of French cooking with the truffles and duck liver and melds it wonderfully with the Italian risotto. The umami flavor of mushroom emulsion blended perfectly with the dish. I was fascinated with the flavors of my starter that I opted to have soup as well. Seared Scallops, Crispy Chicken Skin, Bonito Consomme with Miso Vaporized oyster was a refreshing and light choice, again with the umami influences of Japanese cuisine. The bonito consomme had the flavoring of the Japanese staple soup stock “dashi” made from the bonito fish flakes which complemented the slightly salty miso and the tastes of the sea in the form of scallops and oyster juice. I opted to go simple for my entree of US Beef Tenderloin with foie gras with Cappuccino of Truffle Mashed Potatoes, challenging them to grill it medium rare, but more on the rare side. This is not easy to cook as I wanted the very thick slab of tenderloin more on the rare side, without having the middle of the meat border on cold. The experienced kitchen cooked my meat exactly how I wanted it, with a slight warmth in the middle of this almost rare and perfectly cooked steak. My dinner ended perfectly with a sinful dessert called “Crispy Apple” served with salted caramel, creme Anglaise, white chocolate sauce, vanilla, and salted caramel creme glace. The cored apple was light and crispy and melted in my mouth with that ultra-creamy homemade salted caramel ice cream. I was in heaven. Impressions certainly made an impression on my entire food loving family. We vowed to return soon to try the other enticing dishes on the menu. NEWPORT MALL at resorts world manila TWG Tea Written by Pepper Teehankee URL: http://becausecandysaysso.blogspot.com/2013/01/bacardi-night.html “TWG Tea was picture perfect... exactly what a beautiful tea salon ought to look like” EASTWOOD CITY TV Host, Radio Jock and certified partyphile Sam YG checks out Eastwood City’s newest and hottest nightlife hotspot. Learn all about the exciting things that tickled the fancy of Boys Night Out’s resident goofball and find out what he has to say to guys who are thinking of bringing their date to this newly opened gastro pub. We walked through Newport Mall and browsed through the shops which stay open quite late. We chanced upon TWG Tea, that tea salon I loved and discovered in Singapore years ago. I convinced my family to have after dinner tea. PUBLIKO Eat+Drink Gastro Pub TWG Tea was picture perfect... exactly what a beautiful tea salon ought to look like. Roughly 800 teas were offered in their extensive menu. My father was relieved to choose from several decaffeinated teas so he wouldn’t have a problem sleeping that night. I was surprised to find out that TWG Tea also served food as I thought it was just a tea and dessert place. Browsing through the menu was tempting as the dishes offered sounded great. I was stuffed from the meal in Impressions caved in and ordered TWG Tea’s irresistible macarons and other tea-infused delicacies. I tried a variety of macarons, all were delicious and crispy outside and soft inside, as macarons should be. None of the macarons were overly sweet, which was a welcome surprise. The tea infused ice creams were incredibly tasty and not too sweet either, just the way I like it. As a host of arguably the most popular evening radio talk show and being one of the most recognizable faces in the Metro’s nightlife scene, it would be easy for anyone to think that Sam YG (Samir Gogna in real life) fancies bright party lights and raucous revelries, places where he can fully display his wacky personality while carousing all night long up to the wee hours. Of course the tea hit the spot, with myself wishfully thinking that the hot liquid I was drinking was actually melting the fat stored in my tummy. I have tried several varieties in TWG Tea but I am often drawn to their “Place Vendome” tea, an all-time favorite of mine, which I had to have that night. Alas, I could not eat another bite after that. Impressions and TWG Tea are going to be added to my favorite places to visit in Newport Mall at Resorts World, along with Beurre Blanc, Tao Yuan, and Cru Steakhouse. The list may grow longer as I discover new places to satiate my passion for eating. Sam says he is familiar with Publiko and that he looks forward to checking out its great lineup of imported draft beers. “They got a great beer selection. They have my favorites Hoagaarden and Beck’s, and you have them in tap, so they’re really fresh, which is a good thing,” said a smiling Sam, who confessed being instantly smitten by the steady, homey ambiance and relaxing feel of the gastro pub. He raved about every little thing that caught his attention— from the open kitchen to the menu written on a chalkboard, the slightly dimmed lights, and the comfy couch areas, among other things. But more than just the stellar location and decently-priced booze offerings, the self-confessed foodie was even more enamored by the delightful surprises that came out from Publiko’s kitchen, ran no less by celebrity Chef Carlo Miguel. Sam started out with the Fish and Chips, batter-coated fried fish strips served with thick-cut fries and tartar sauce. Given his penchant for comfort food, the mouthwatering combination instantly appealed to him, singling out its delightful creaminess, generous servings and that it didn’t taste that fishy. “Beer paired with comfort food, you can’t go wrong with that. PUBLIKO is definitely a perfect place to be after a long stressful day at work” Chef Carlo’s signature dish, which he fondly calls Mom’s Meatloaf, was a big surprise to Sam. The huge serving that included four slices of meatloaf wrapped in bacon, and served with corn and carrots, flavorful onion gravy and steamed rice, was good enough for two, according to him. After a few digs at the meatloaf, he was fascinated by how it was perfectly-cooked and how tender the meat was. The Barbeque Ribs, grilled smoked pork ribs with fries and cilantro lime slaw, was an easy favorite for Sam. “It literally fell off the bones! It’s not like other barbeque ribs that get their taste from the sauce,” Sam said, raving about the meat’s tenderness and the flavors that went all the way to the bones. Sam’s sumptuous meal was capped by a delightful dessert, the Bread and Butter Pudding, which is served with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream. For him, the little caramel and cinnamon twist was a standout as it left the right amount of sweetness on the tongue. He likewise loved the caramel on the base that allowed him to have some sort of control on the sweetness level. “This is the perfect place for isolating your girlfriend or your date. You can just take her here, have her sit back, enjoy some beers and take care of her, afterwards,” said Sam in his familiar macho tone. By the time they set their foot on the restaurant, Chico could not help but be intrigued by the restaurant’s unique jar-like lighting fixtures, which complemented well the spacious and intricately designed dining area. Upon soaking in the cozy ambiance of the place, a simmering bowl of Halaan Soup was served as starter. Del gave it a two-thumbs-up, saying that the savory taste of the clam broth reminded her of her mom’s cooking. Their meal took a healthy turn with two delightful salad bowls, the Cebu Danggit Salad and the Crab and Mango Salad. A self-confessed salad-eater and fan of the famous Cebu delicacy, Chico marveled at his every bite, “I really loved the Cebu Danggit Salad. It’s like getting your danggit fix in a refreshing and healthier way.” Though admitting she was not that into seafood, Delamar could not agree more, “The combination of the crab and olive oil, with the fried garlic, it’s just perfect. It’s healthy and tasty at the same time.” Just when they thought the feast was over, a delightful course from The Flying Pig, Red Crab’s sister all-meat French-American diner, was served. Banging Bagnet, crispy pork belly served with adobo rice, special vinegar and balsamic liver sauce, was a no-brainer, much like the Pork Treasure Pot, and the Pork and Beans, both of which easily appealed to Chico and Del given its flavorful and tender meat that fell off the bones. While they absolutely loved the meat-dishes, the Flying Pig, the restaurant’s namesake specialty chicken lollipops, had them madly smitten. The two continued going over the dishes they just had while having their sweet tooth fix with the classic Leche Flan, literally leaving a sweet note on the longtime duo just before they head to their next destination. “The balance of the saltiness of the danggit, and the fresh green, allows you to eat more of it,” Del, chimed in, raving also about the dressing, which they both think is very light and just right. After having their fill of their newfound favorite, the pair had a taste of Deep Fried LapuLapu in Chili Mango Sauce, a mouthwatering dish that had them fancying its unique sweet and salty tang and spicy twist. Crab Maritess, Red Crab’s famed house specialty, was served next and it was good as advertised, according to them. “For me, this is the crowning glory of the entire meal,” a visibly amazed Chico said, adding that the dish’s simplicity didn’t take away much of its tastiness and interplay of flavors. EASTWOOD CITY Slappy Cakes A short walk across Eastwood Mall Open Park brought Chico and Del at Slappy Cakes, an American diner that originated from Portland, Oregon, a place where foodies can enjoy breakfast all-day long, together with a sumptuous variety of comfort food and a delightful selection of do-ityourself pancakes. “Slappy Cakes is happy cakes. It’s not your usual restaurant, it’s a place where you can bond, enjoy a good conversation and have fun. The pancakes will bring out the kid on you.” - Chico The sleek-looking couches made out of fine wood, painted walls, intricately-designed interiors and open counter easily provided a distinct American vibe, a very inviting ambiance they instantly fell in love with upon their entry. “This place is very American in look and feel,” Chico said while slowly walking towards their seat, admitting that he frequents the place for breakfast and of course, for the incomparable fun of making his own chocolate pancakes. As they sat in front of the griddle, the fun-loving duo were tempted to begin making their own pancakes, though the look and aroma of the Cheese Sticks and Balsamic Garlic Burger gave them enough reasons to pause momentarily. “The Cheese Sticks are very light and fluffy, you’ll never get tired of eating it unlike the other cheese sticks I had before,” said Del while dipping the hand-breaded sticks to the marinara sauce. They marveled at how good the Balsamic Garlic Burger was and it’s no surprise that the burger became an easy favorite for the two, labeling it as a must-try. “The Balsamic vinegar really enhanced the flavors of the meat, and the potato on the side is a definite winner,” Del said. Chico also loved the potato wedges and the burger’s parmesan cheese. The Southern Fried Chicken Tenders, deep-friend chicken fingers served with special spices, sausage gravy and crispy potatoes, was a stand-out 48 “If you are looking for a weekend destination, or even for a day date, this the right place to go.” - Delamar for the two of them that they almost ran out of words to describe it. By the time their pancakes were done, Chico went choco-loco. “I love the chocolate pancakes. It’s just the whole chocolate overload that I really enjoy every time I eat here,” he muses, while putting a heap of chocolate chips and rich chocolate syrup on his steaming pancakes. Midway through their delightful meal, Del discovered something on the menu that would further spice up their culinary adventure. “The fact that they offer alcohol any time of the day, I’m sold! This is just a perfect way to feel good and make the whole experience more fun,” a seemingly giddy Del remarked. Chico and Del loved the place, the food and the DIY pancakes so much that slews of ideas and quirky thoughts came and went as fast as their pancakes were cooked. “Let’s say you’re sitting here with your crush, you can just make a heartshaped pancake and see how she reacts,” said Chico in jest. “This is a perfect dating spot. You can just sit here, enjoy the food, have a good conversation, while having fun and making pancakes together,” Del said, adding that the place is also ideal for families and groups of friends. Given their almost same thoughts on each of the entrees they tried, it was obvious that the longtime on-air partners are in harmony this time. There were hardly any of the usual disagreements or heated arguments that ‘Rushers’ hear over the radio every morning. It was just mutual elation and a resounding eagerness to dine together at Slappy Cakes once again. Slappy Cakes is located at the ground floor of Eastwood Mall, across the mall’s Open Park. For inquiries and reservations, call 909-3501 or email info@slappycakes.com.ph. 50 51 52 Red PLAY UP ON Red has always been a traditional Christmas color, with its beauty and vibrancy alluding to the richness and the pomp of the season.
