Summer
FASHION. MUSIC. FOOD. MIX THEM ALL TOGETHER AND
YOU’VE GOT THE MAKINGS OF A PERFECT SUMMER!
Each embodying one of these elements, three of Manila’s elite make
the perfect cover for the summer issue of the Megaworld Lifestyle
Malls. Bea Tantoco, Mikaela Lagdameo-Martinez and Stephanie Zubiri make this season all the more real with bits and pieces of their
lives. You’ll soon learn that their personalities are like summer to
the usually bustling city life.

w
ith a family name
synonymous to a retail
giant, everybody simply
assumes that Bea
Tantoco will follow her
predecessors’ footsteps.
And she did, for a while.
But passion prevailed and
soon after, Bea resigns
from her job as a retail
manager and decided to
pursue a career in singing.
day. One week could be
focused completely on
gigs and performances.
Other weeks, it’s all
about negotiations, filing,
accounting, and a lot of
communication through
phone, email and social
networks. Another
week could be centered
specifically for rehearsals
and learning new songs.
It’s a mixture of a lot of
things and she loves how
everything can be done
essentially on her own
time.
Unbeknownst to many,
the Tantoco clan starting
from their dad Rico, are
all closet singers. So when
Bea decided to pursue this
“other” family passion
professionally, the support
of the whole clan naturally
poured forth.
SHAKIN’ AND
BAKIN’
When asked about
her summer tradition,
she goes for one word:
Boracay. After spritzing
on some sun protection,
she likes to jump into the
water and swim!
CHASING THE DREAM
Catching up with Bea’s busy
schedule, she starts out by
sharing how she got into the
music industry. As early as age 3, she
fondly recalls hearing a Madonna song
play in the mall and whispering to her
father, “Maduna.” She goes on to share
that it took her awhile before she mustered
up the courage to pursue a singing career
saying, “What really jolted me into doing
it was a personal development seminar
called The Landmark Forum.”
On days when she can afford herself
some spare time, she enjoys going to
the beach or to Sta. Elena Golf and
Country Club to relax and recharge
her batteries. She finds that she’s able
to unwind in serene and peaceful
environments, where she is surrounded
by nature, like the beach, the mountains
or even a farm. She shares that places
like these reenergize her and give her
inspiration. Another way she’s able
to chill out is by watching movies
at Eastwood Cinemas or enjoying a meal at Krazy Garlik in
Newport Mall at Resorts World Manila.
“NO DAY IS THE SAME.
IT’S A MIXTURE OF A LOT
OF THINGS AND I LOVE
HOW EVERYTHING CAN
BE DONE ESSENTIALLY ON
MY OWN TIME.”
Evidently in awe of doing what she loves
the most, she’s most grateful for the
blessing and support she gets from her family and friends. Her
inspiration comes from Adele, Alicia Keys, Jill Scott, Joss Stone
and, in her younger days, Mariah Carey.
In the year and a half she’s been in the industry, she enjoys
meeting people from different backgrounds. On top of doing
what she loves and sharing her passion with others, she says it’s a
great excuse to wear glitzy and glam clothes! Her only concerns
are the late nights and lack of sleep as well as wearing makeup,
which she’s allergic to.
When asked about her schedule she mentions that no day is the
same. Her schedule changes from week to week, or even day to
Though she spends most nights doing the bar scene with
her band, The Sauce, Bea is also a socio-civic advocate, an
environmentalist and an educator on the side. Now that’s for a
well-rounded lifestyle!
Catch Bea perform live on Tuesdays, 10:00pm at Salon de
Ning, Manila Peninsula and on Fridays, 10:15pm at Martini’s
in Mandarin Oriental. For gig schedules follow her at www.

MIKAELA
LAGDAMEOMartinez
SUPERMODEL, SUPER MOM
l
ong, lean and fresh-faced
Mikaela Lagdameo-Martinez
packs a wallop when you
see her resume and find that
she’s a model and clothing endorser,
entrepreneur, money broker and mom
to kids Noelle and Tyler.
She’s been modeling since she was 16,
and has been known as part of the
famous pizza brand “barkada” along
with John Lloyd Cruz. She is also the
face behind the campaigns of Blue
Water Day Spa and has appeared in
several skin care advertisements.
A canny entrepreneur, she owns Elan
Models International and Gourmet
Pao, a food business found in Newport
Cinemas. She shares the business with
her husband and his family. With all
her busy undertakings and always
polished appearance, Mika never lets
anyone forget that she is a mother
above all else.
26
27
Her spare time is spent at
home playing on her iPad,
watching DVDs with her
husband, or hanging out
with her kids. She also
gets her nails done or goes
for a massage.
FROM CATWALK TO
CAREER WOMAN
Being a well-known model,
you wouldn’t think that she
got into it accidentally. “I
thought it would be a one-time
thing and never again, but
then after one magazine shoot
followed the commercial to
fashion shows.”
She loves spending time
with her family and
explains that “my kids
are like little adults. My
kids are so talkative and
they have their own mind
already even at a young
age. It’s fun to see them
grow up together.”
On talking about business,
she explains that even as a kid
she enjoyed making a profit
from the things she sells. She
started out by offering toys
and cookies to classmates and
now she owns Gourmet Pao
and a modeling agency!
Her most recent venture is
in the finance industry as a
money broker, which was
also accidental. She happily
shares, “I was delivering siopao to the
company, where a lot of my friends were at. I
stayed and watched what they do and I found
it interesting.”
In all her success, she maintains a humble
spirit and expresses that nothing was planned
but she loves it all. Surprisingly, she handles
everything on her own and she calmly explains
that it’s all a matter of knowing her priorities
and working around her schedule.
She’s explains that it’s because of time
management and simply knowing her
priorities that she’s able to balance family and
career.
IRRESISTIBLY TANNED
“I THOUGHT IT WOULD
BE A ONE-TIME THING
AND NEVER AGAIN,
BUT THEN AFTER ONE
MAGAZINE SHOOT
FOLLOWED THE
COMMERCIAL TO
FASHION SHOWS.”
FAMILY-ORIENTED
Being a mother of two kids, aged seven and three, her daily
routine is centered on her family. On weekdays, she gets up at
6 to have breakfast with her children before they go to school
and she to work. After work, she goes home or does shoots. Her
weekends are dedicated entirely to her family.
28
Even if it’s not summer,
Mikaela shares that she
loves going to the beach
and doesn’t miss out on
getting a tan. She enjoys
hanging out at the beach
and spending a whole weekend
there with her kids and friends.
“Sometimes we need a break from
the whole city life and it really
helps a lot,” Mikaela shares.
An irresistible item Mikaela can’t
live without is her bikini and
tanning oil. Even when she’s just
in her house and the sun is up,
she’ll work on her tan by putting
on her bikini and lathering some
tanning oil.
To pamper herself, she goes for
massages at Blue Water Day
Spa at Eastwood Mall and gets
her nails done once a week. She also goes for conditioning
treatments for her hair. She also loves going to Newport Mall
at Resorts World Manila. Just recently, she and her husband
bought an anniversary present for each other at Lucerne.
They also go to Opus and enjoy watching movies at Newport
Cinemas.
How to juggle work with family and still manage to look
fashionable, Mikaela has definitely mastered this art.

b
eautiful, intelligent,
svelte, and can cook
too! If you think you
can never find these
traits possessed by
only one woman,
think again. Or better
yet, think Stephanie
Zubiri.
Stephanie possesses an
impressive Master’s Degree
in Sustainable Development
and Geography and held
a highly coveted post
for the United Nations
Environment Program in
France. So what propelled
this lady to turn her back
on this rare profession
to pursue a career in the
culinary industry?
STEPHANIE
ZUBIRI
THE MODERN EPICUREAN
30
“I DON’T JUST TALK
ABOUT THE FOOD
ON THE SURFACE.
I GET INSPIRED BY
THE STORIES
BEHIND
WHAT I EAT.”
Her stay in France paved
the opportunity to train in
culinary and oenological
(the study of making wine)
arts at Le Cordon Bleu.
Living in the gastronomic
capital of the world for six
years, she spent so much
time traveling around
Europe tasting and learning
different things about
food. Upon her return
to
Manila,
Stephanie
discovered that she enjoys
cooking
and
teaching
the most, and started
to give cooking classes.
She
slowly expanded
to catering services,
party organization and
consulting, and eventually
formed her own company,
Modern Epicurean Kitchen.
Stephanie also maintains
her own blog, has a regular
column at the Philippine
Star, and works as editorin-chief of Olive Magazine.
31
CULINARY MASTER
Even at a young age, she knew that she loved food. She even
remembers playing with her kitchen toy set. Early in life, she was
exposed to all kinds of food and not just those for kids. If she
doesn’t like the food that’s prepared, she would make her own.
Her favorites are cheese, fried chicken, and pasta.
Her love for food grew even more when she studied in Le
Cordon Bleu in France, where she lived for six years. When
she came back to the Philippines, her Mom gave her the idea
of giving cooking classes, which she continues to do to this day.
From that idea, her passion grew to a successful restaurant and
her own column.
Apart from cooking, she’s very
passionate about writing. Her
background in history and
geography at Le Cordon Bleu
helps her add depth in her
material. She explains, “I don’t
just talk about the food on the
surface. I get inspired by the
stories behind what I eat.”
Coming from someone who’s
gotten a lot of experience in the
industry, she shares that some
of the best dining experiences
can be in the streets of Thailand
eating Pad Thai, or eating in
some random bistro in Paris
and you don’t even know who’s
behind the kitchen. She happily
says that it’s always a surprise.
Being a businesswoman, a
writer, and a passionate foodie,
her schedule is quite hectic.
Tuesday mornings are dedicated
to writing her column article
for Philippine Star. Five times a
week, she also manages to make
time for a work-out in order
to stay healthy and maintain
her figure. She even recently
joined the bandwagon and tried
Zumba. She also avoids red meat
when not at work, explaining that she gets her fair share of the
food in the many press events she’s invited to.
BOHO MEETS CLASSIC
Stephanie describes her style as a little bohemian. Her closet is
filled with prints and colors which reflects her happy and bright
personality.
32
When going out to meet clients, she dresses for her body type and
likes the look of the 50’s style with cinched waist or body hugging
dresses and flowy skirts. On regular days, she dresses down to her
shorts and wedges or a pair of jeans with a nice blouse and heels.
Stephanie invests in her clothes and prefers to choose wisely for
nice fabrics that are expensive yet would last longer and still look
elegant. She has learned to buy less and more of items which she
will really love.
Stephanie finds fun in her work when she gets to go on wine
tasting sessions or wine crawl with the International Wine and
Food Society Ladies Chapter. In her spare time, she enjoys going
out of town once a month for scuba diving.
She pampers herself by going to
the parlor to get her weekly dose
of mani-pedi and foot spa. She
also likes to unwind with a glass
of wine. She describes that, “At
the end of the day, when I’m
tired, I pour a glass of wine. I
studied it in France, as well and
now I’m trying to learn more
about it. I bought this big wine
encyclopedia and go through
each region slowly.”

I
t’s time to wrap up the first quarter madness and wheel in the
months of happy days and getaways. From the tan to the tease,
summer is arguably the best time of the year to parade the
delights of being uncovered. Why not? You have done incredibly
well in keeping warm during the Ber months and now you are to
up the notch and keep cool under the sweltering heat. But before
you head out and kiss the Sun, do make sure that you are eyecandy ready. Check these items off your list while checking out these
establishments that will surely make you feel Summer-Sexy.
SHAPE YOUR SILHOUETTE
You’ve had three months to shed off the Holiday pounds. Difficult? Yes. Possible? Very much so. Haven’t started yet?
We suggest you pick and stick to a routine that suits your preference and commit to it 101%. Coupled with a mindset
of a Champ, these activities will surely help you get that toned physique everyone will be staring at.
When going out, she loves dining
at Ramen Bar at Eastwood City.
Her love for fried chicken is
satisfied with the Spicy Chicken
Karaage, exclaiming, “It’s the
best!”
IRRESISTIBLY LAID BACK
“I need to see the beach. I’m a
beach person. I need the water.
I need the sun. I need the sand.
And I dive,” enthuses Stephanie
when asked about her summer
tradition. Her favorite beach is
Amanpulo and says she hasn’t
seen anything like the place and
even compares the beautiful
place to a monochromatic Mark
Rothko painting.
She’s also fortunate enough to have a nice garden and pool that
when it’s a really nice day, she goes for a swim with her dogs,
invite a few friends over and have barbecue and beer. To stay
cool in the summer, Stephanie thinks that there are only 2 things
that one should drink in the summer: a real ice cold beer or a nice
pale Italian white wine.
Even in her leisure time, she finds that it is in her passion that
she’s able to find fulfillment.
