Texas Business Alliance Overview
Texas Business Alliance (TBA) is a nonprofit, membership-driven leader of small business promotion, advocacy
and development (“P.A.D.”).
Vision and Mission Statements
TBA vision is to strengthen the Texas economy and spur job creation by expanding minority- and women-owned
businesses (MWBEs), and encouraging youth entrepreneurship. TBA has a mission to equip minority- and womenowned businesses to be qualified suppliers, ready to compete for public, private and international opportunities
through progressive development and specialized training.
Statement of Need
Small businesses employ two-thirds of the country’s private sector workforce, represent 99.7 percent of
all employer firms, represent 97.3 percent of all the exporters of goods, and generate a majority of the
innovations that come from U.S. companies, according the Small Business Administration.Yet, 637,100 new
businesses were created in 2007 and 560,300 closed, and there were 28,322 bankruptcies. Additionally, MWBEs
disproportionately have fewer contract opportunities and capital access.
TBA has developed six core programs as a result of its years of research to more specifically address the
development gaps in a way that has not yet been addressed.
Description
The six core TBA programs are: Business Enterprise Academy®, One Woman National Business Conference®,
The Prime Objective®, Capital Connections®, Community Collaboratives®, and the Youth Entrepreneurship
Academy®. The programs have a specific focus on industries severely underrepresented by MWBEs:
construction, energy, manufacturing/wholesale/distribution, transportation, technology, engineering and medical.
Common among all of the TBA programs is an intense focus on the following:
infrastructure management, safety, effective marketing/advertising, financial management, information technology,
legal solutions, insurance, investments/retirement, human resources/personnel management, accessing capital, joint
venture partnerships, project management, real estate leasing/ownership, networking, certification, mentoring by
industry professionals, RFP/RFQ training and presentation skills.
Goals and Objectives
The goal of TBA MWBE development programs is to close the development gaps that a) keep MWBEs from
competing on a larger stage, or b) contribute to MWBE business failure.
The primary objectives include:
C
reating a measurable pipeline of multicultural MWBEs ready for contract opportunities and making
1)
connections.
D
eveloping top-notch educational models that can be leveraged locally, regionally, nationally and
2)
internationally by TBA chapter networks and other member-driven organizations.
3)
Assisting our MWBE members with access to capital.
E quipping high school and college students with the tools and resources to pursue an entrepreneurial
4)
alternative.

Greetings
Welcome to the One Woman National Business Conference®,
hosted by the Texas Business Alliance.
I applaud you on your decision to invest in your business, careers
and yourself by attending the conference. Small businesses are
the backbone of our economy, accounting for half of private
sector employment and creating nearly 75 percent of net new
jobs each year.
Women entrepreneurs are making critical contributions
comprising the fastest growing segment of the U.S. business
community, totaling an estimated 7.7 million firms that
contribute more than $1.1 trillion to the economy.
This year, the One Woman® theme is “Back to Basics.” In a world where we tend to
overcomplicate matters, the “Back to Basics” theme is meant to signify the knowledge
we need to get back to the fundamental things that helped build character and make
you successful at the onset of your entrepreneurial journey.
I’m excited about One Woman® 2011 because of its simplicity at redirecting focus to a
back to basics business approach and tapping into the passion of what made you start
a business to begin with. Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to take
your business to your next level of success with confidence and excitement.
Sincerely,
Jacqueline Baly Chaumette

Greetings
Greetings!
I am so excited to celebrate with each of you, as we are all gathered here at the
Sugar Land Marriott for this year’s One Woman National Business Conference®.
I would like to thank God and express my sincere gratitude to the sponsors,
vendors, speakers, One Woman committee, MWH Public Relations, the
volunteers and YOU, for investing your time, talent and treasure into making this
conference a success.
Can you believe it has been a whole year since we had our last conference? So
much has changed, but one thing that hasn’t changed is the perseverance of
women-owned businesses and the success stories that I hear from them daily.
The response to the conference has been overwhelming, garnering registrants
from across the country and the globe.
The attendees that participated last year could not stop sharing with us about the
relationships they garnered, contracts they were awarded and capital that they
have obtained, as a result of the connections made through networking at the
conference.
We solicited valuable feedback from those that attended and most of the feedback from many businesses, both large
and small, was that there was a need and desire for further business and leadership development.
That is why this year’s theme, “Back to the Basics,” is so relevant. We are providing training and development that can only be achieved through a boot-camp style format,
allowing you to leave with the necessary tools, skills and a “playbook” that you can implement into your business
immediately.
You will not be disappointed at the wealth of knowledge, empowering sessions and major connections you will
make over these 20 hours. Everyone will be given a chance to join the Texas Business Alliance, so that we can help promote, advocate and
develop you, as well as allow you to register at a significant discount for next year’s 4th Annual One Woman
National Business Conference, taking place right here at the Sugar Land Marriott!
Again, thanks for attending and it is our hope that you are more motivated and business- ready, as a result of
choosing to invest in yourself at this year’s conference!
Sincerely,
Jeffrey L. Boney

Still Standing Award Winner
Dell Trahan
Soaring Heights Awards
Dell Trahan is President and co-owner of T & K’s
Mobile Detailing and Pressure Washing, Inc., a small business
servicing Houston and surrounding areas for the past five
years. Dell is the “mother ” of the T & K’s Brand and runs
the company with her son, Dornell Owens. T & K’s has a
long history of business excellence and has received many
prestigious awards. In 2009 T & K’s was awarded the Emerging
(E-10) Award, by the Houston Minority Supplier Diversity
Council (HMSDC). This award is only given to leading
enterprises that have emerged successful after having faced
challenges. Dell Trahan is a “Challenge Conqueror!” In 2010,
Dell graduated from the Inaugural Class of the Texas Business
Alliance (TBA) “Business Enterprise Academy.” Dell, via her
company, T & K’s, was a 2010 Pinnacle Award Nominee at the
Houston Citizens Chamber of Commerce Annual Gala.
T & Ks has significantly contributed to Houston’s economy and created jobs for many ex-felony
Houstonians. T & K’s purposes for being in business is to leave a family legacy for her son, Dornell and
two granddaughters Danyale (9), Tamara (20) and one great-grand son Kristian Dearion (1). Their mission
is to take those that are in need of a third or fourth chance in life with a job to take care of their families
and to get them off the streets and prison, out of the men and women shelters and into their own homes.
We have helped several come out of the Men’s Star of Hope Shelters to get into their own apartment and
helped them get them a car. They are now supporting themselves and their kids. On a monthly average
Dell interviews more than 25 people a month wanting to get off the streets selling drugs and just want the
opportunity to work a real job making HONEST money. If it wasn’t for our employees (24) we wouldn’t
be able to do what we do here in Houston. So, what if they are on probation for a drug charge, robbery,
prostitution or assault charges from 5-20 years ago. “PEOPLE CAN CHANGE”……we judge NO ONE.
We just want GOOD, HARD WORKING, DEPENDABLE, TRUST WORTHY and FLEXIBLE people to train
and to produce quality work.
Dell is committed to doing her part to make American communities better. Dell is a member of the
Abundant Life Cathedral Church and serves within the Public Relations Ministry. She volunteers with many
worthy causes that range from professional business organizations (TBA, HMSDC) to advocacy groups
that empower women veterans to be entrepreneurs (Women Veterans Business Center). Dell serves
on the HMSDC’s Program Committee. Her warm smile can be seen at most HMSDC events welcoming
business owners and Fortune 500 companies to “do business.” Dell is a living testimony that with hard
work, faith and perseverance, you can and will be successful.

“Boot Camp” for Start-up/Emerging Business Owners
(Up to $2 Million Annual Revenue)
Track #1 provides the tactics and fundamentals to stay in the game and win!
Your Checklist:
Develop or update your business plan. Your business plan should be “evergreen”
and referred to/updated often to stay on course.
Ensure your business plan has the critical items a loan officer looks for.
Include a sales strategy in your business plan.
Know where to find the available resources for industry information and mentor
review.
Know which certifications are important for your next-level success, what it takes
to be certified, and why it is important.
Ensure your business entity is established properly/legally.
Know your financial story. Those on the critical relationship list are key, but
knowing your own story is a must.Your financial statements, and profit
and loss and balance sheet, give a bird’s eye view to the following 3P’s:
Profitability, Performance and Priorities. The analysis of these statements allows
stakeholders to evaluate profitable streams, determine whether priorities are
well placed and weigh performance to company objectives and financial goals.
A system for capturing income and expenses is pivotal in the sustainability and
growth of any company. Have you heard the saying, “Got milk?” For business
owners, the question is, “Got Accounting?”
Every business owner should know how many cents on the dollar it takes to earn
a dollar. If it takes 90 cents to earn $1, then a business is in trouble. Business
owners won’t know this key information until she/he has a system in place to
capture.
Know what integrated marketing means.
Create a marketing strategy specific to your business.
Understand the term “value proposition” and how to state it.
Deliver a top-notch elevator pitch. Practice. Practice. Practice.
Know who should make up your team (critical relationships).

Financial Playbook
Your financial plays should be founded on sound financial reporting.
Components to this reporting should entail:
·
Accruate account of income from each service line or product
·
Picture of direct costs or costs of goods sold to derive at gross profit
·
Calculation of profit margin and comparative analysis of this margin to others in the same industry
·
Picture of overhead expenses
·
Accurate accounts receivable and accounts payable numbers
·
Properly booked current and fixed assets/liabilities
·
Accurate equity numbers
These components culminate into this general checklist that every business owner should have in their Playbook:
1. Completed financial and cash flow statements summarizing annual activity from an established financial accounting system
2. Properly filed and stored supporting documents to financial statements (i.e., vendor and customer invoices, cancelled checks,
receipts, purchase orders, bank statements, etc.)
3. Completed tax returns for all years that tie to financials
4. Properly completed and filed employment tax forms (i.e., 941, 940, state forms)
5. Paid taxes receipts/cancelled checks or installment agreements for all taxes owed
6. Accurate customer aging reports (how much is owed to you)
7. Accurate vendor aging reports (summary of what you owe)
8. Customer and vendor pay terms list to better manage cash flow
9. Ensure all fixed assets are booked and properly depreciated on books and match to tax return
10. Ensure liability statements match what you have booked
11. Develop a capital fund for future projects or service expansions
To call the right financial plays, every owner should be equipped with these basics after at least a year in business and especially in
considering service or product line expansion.

About
Track II-III: Experienced Business Owners &
Supplier Diversity Professionals
$2 Million to $100+ Million in Annual Revenue
Workshop Session I :: “The Play Book:
Building a Winning Super Bowl-Type Team”
Growing a successful enterprise can be challenging and continuous. Executive
leaders need the training and development necessary to build a winning team.
Learn how to manage, motivate and mobilize your team for greater productivity;
have your team make on-camera media remarks and respond appropriately to all
media questions; and ensure you have the right financial team in place.
Workshop Session II :: “Cross-Training Your Company:
Using All Its Talents to be Successful”
Putting all of your proverbial eggs in one basket can be dangerous in business.
With one change in your client’s company, your livelihood could easily be in
jeopardy. In your first workshop, explore ways to create multiple streams of
income that align with your core business, build capacity, and also develop a solid
succession plan for retirement.
Workshop Session III :: “How to Have Everyone Invest:
Develop Your Own Supplier Diversity Program for MWBEs”
You may be a prime contractor and now it’s time to pay it forward. Learn why
and how to establish effective sub-contractor relationships; a mentor protégé’
program; and sub-contract with smaller MWBEs successfully. In Workshop III,
you’ll also converge with Track III (Supplier Diversity Track) in a “Track-Meet”
supplier meet-up.

Playbook: Track II :: My Playbook Checklist
63
