Not only will we have a good time socializing, eating, and learning about our
club’s history, but we will also meet our two new Freshman Scholarship
recipients! See page 2 for more details.
We had another successful Sibs Weekend
fundraiser in February. The bus trip made
more than $6,500 for our freshman
scholarship fund! Four chaperoned buses
carried little sibs from Cleveland to Athens
to visit their big sibs for the weekend of
February 18–20. (They were very tired on
the way back to Cleveland on Sunday.)
A very warm thank-you to the following members who
helped make this fundraiser a success, whether you planned,
chaperoned, or volunteered in some other capacity:

Cathy & Ken Bathgate

Karen Shallcross

Kay Brabander

Leah Sterlekar-Farrar

Chris Good

Aubrey Strippy

Amy Hollis

Katie Stupansky

Margot Klima

Yolanda & Tom Sutyak
Additional thanks go out to the OU Alumni Association,
and especially to Dawn Werry.
Be sure to check out all of the OUWC’s and
OU’s upcoming events for the spring. Go Bobcats!
Sincerely,
Kelly M. Baylog

New Scholarship Winners
The OUWC will officially recognize our two outstanding freshman scholarship
winners for 2011–12 at the Spring Luncheon on Saturday, April 30.
We had 31 awesome applicants from 20 different schools in Greater Cleveland.
Thank you to our section essay readers for their important part in the
evaluation process: Deanna Etling, Marge Gutkowski, Dorothy Sturman,
and Mattie Whittaker. Each of our applicants displayed wonderful grades,
test scores, and leadership roles in their schools and communities. The winners
were selected on the basis of their GPAs, ACT/SAT scores, and inspiring, wellwritten essays.
Emily Weaver will graduate from Mentor High School and plans on a
major in Creative Writing at OU. She is active in National Honor Society, is
the president of the theater club, and was the stage manager for the fall
play in addition to participating in a number of other school activities. Her
leadership in the community included Safety Town, Medical Supplies for
Christ in Haiti, and cooking meals at a local homeless shelter.
Mallory Balmart will graduate from Avon High School and has chosen a
major in Wildlife Biology and Conservation at OU. She is active in National
Honor Society as well; she is also a drum major and section leader in the
marching and concert bands. Volunteering for her church and the Love-aStray organization has been an important part of her life.
Please join us on April 30 to meet, congratulate, and welcome both Emily and
Mallory to our Ohio University Women’s Club family.

Notes of Thanks from Current Students
During Sibs Weekend, OUWC members and scholarship winners were invited
to a luncheon at Konneker where the students were given goodie bags filled
with fun items collected by OUWC members.
Hello Kelly,
Dear OU Women's Club,
I wanted to thank you and the Women's
Club again for everything they have
contributed to my education and my time
at Ohio University. I take my school work
seriously and it's awesome to have so
much support from a group of great
women. I had a lovely time at the
luncheon on Saturday and the food was
great! The goody bag was full of a lot of
great stuff and I really appreciate it! I
hope you and the other ladies enjoyed
the rest of the weekend. Please extend
my gratitude to everyone in the club.
I cannot thank you enough for thinking
of me and putting together a lovely gift
basket. Your generosity and support
never fail to amaze me. I'm forever
thankful for your kindness. Your endless
contributions have allowed me to
experience endless opportunities that
going to college can offer. I apologize for
having to go out of town for the Sibs
Weekend lunch, but know that the
thought was much appreciated. Thanks
so much again! I honestly cannot say it
enough.
Take care!
All the best,
Amy Olander
Kelsie Phelps
Dear OUWC,
Thank you so much for the amazing goody bag you made. I felt so loved even though I couldn't attend
the Sibs Weekend luncheon. How did you know about my passion for reusable grocery bags, chocolate,
and Pez candy (it was my favorite holiday candy growing up)! The mini loofah is perfect for my travels
and the Tide-to-Go pen is a necessity for me . . . but I've always been too cheap to buy it. :)
I am very busy choosing between graduate schools and programs. Right now, I am leaning toward U
of Oklahoma for Geoinformatics; it is rather silly, though, that they go by ―OU‖ as well. I maintain that
OHIO is the ―real‖ OU . . . We were here first!
I can’t wait to graduate and see where I go next! You guys are the best.
Thank you again, and see you in the spring. :)

Then, cap off your OUr Day celebration with fellow Bobcats at the Harry Buffalo
