Brown; Mayor Pro Tem, Paul eBlatz, Ojai. s Ventura County’s Gold Coast Transit District (GCTD) unveiled their new fixed-route and paratransit vehicles today, revealing e a new modern bus design that reflects the agency’s new brand s identity. o GCTD held focus groups and compiled feedback from passene gers, members of the GCTD staff, o a n s s r e a o o , y y o s s r o s e o - s - r s o Board Members and other community stakeholders to develop a logo and bus design that would resonate with a cross section of the community. The final bus design is one that reflects all of the input received and evokes the agency’s vision of a more modern, clean and efficient future. The existing design will be phased out to make way for the new look that features a vibrant blue representing the coast, a radiant green representing energy efficiency and the surrounding agricultural environment, and gold, representing quality service. The new logo with the words “GO GREEN - GO GOLD COAST TRANSIT” will also be featured on the new buses. GCTD was among the earliest transit agencies in California to transition its full fleet to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), beginning in 1995. The timing of the rebranding coincides with the retirement of many buses that have reached the end of their 12-year life cycle. The first eight buses are scheduled for delivery in late July, with an additional six slated for 2016. The 40-foot fixed-route buses are made by Gillig, headquartered in Hayward, who have been in the business since 1890 – 125 years. Norm Reynolds, Gillig Regional Sales Manager said, “Thank you Gold Coast Transit for this partnership and thank you for supporting California jobs”. The paratransit vehicles used for GCTD’s GO ACCESS service are built by Mobility Ventures, LLC (MV-1) headquartered in Indiana. The new wheelchair accessible vans are smaller and can more easily reach customers who live on narrow streets. The logo was designed by the local graphic-design boutique, Deen Design and the bus design scheme was developed by Rubberneck Signs. Both are Oxnard-based businesses. “In many ways, this has been a community-driven process”, said Steven P. Brown, GCTD General Manager. “Beginning with all of the community outreach to gather input, to working with local businesses for the new design scheme and lastly, purchasing vehicles made here in the USA. We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to not only produce a great product for our passengers, but do our part to support the local economy as well.” GCTD provides safe, responsive, convenient, efficient, and environmentally responsible fixed-route bus and paratransit public transportation that serves the diverse needs of the cities of Ojai, Oxnard, Port Hueneme and Ventura, and in the unincorporated County areas between the cities. Utilizing a fleet of 54 clean-fueled buses, GCTD carries nearly 4 million passengers annually on its 19 bus routes. VIDA NEWSPAPER 07-09-15 Page B2 www.vidanewspaper.com No freedom for first degree murder District Attorney Gregory D. Totten announced that Governor Brown has blocked the parole of first-degree murderer inmate Larry Jay. Jay was convicted of the first-degree murder of Naomi Harris, aged 50. On May 6, 1976, Jay set up a false alibi for himself, then hid in the restroom of a bar in Ventura. After the bar closed, he ambushed the bartender, Ms. Harris, and killed her by fracturing her skull with a hammer. The evidence suggested that he struck her once when she was standing, then ordered her to lie face down on the floor, where he struck her in the back of her head multiple times with a hammer, crushing her skull and killing her. He stole $168 from two cash registers, fled the scene in a stolen truck, and went to a fast food restaurant for a snack. The District Attorney’s Office opposed parole for this brutal crime. The Board of Parole Hearings nonetheless found Jay suitable for parole based on his current age of 67 years, length of incarceration of 39 years, remorse, lack of recent prison misconduct, risk assessment, and parole plans. The District Attorney then asked the Governor to overturn the decision, as authorized by the California Constitution. On July 1, 2015, Governor Brown reversed the grant of parole, finding that Jay poses an unreasonable danger to society if released from prison. The District Attorney thanked the Governor for his decision protecting the community. Discrimination in the rental... Continued from page A1 ination than federal law in many situations. For example, California law prohibits landlords from asking prospective tenants about their immigration status. And California prohibits discrimination based on marital status, sexual orientation or arbitrary categories that have nothing to do with being able to be a good tenant. Examples of illegal arbitrary categories include union members, members of certain religions or political parties or occupations such as bartenders. Discriminatory acts include refusing to rent, lease or sell real property for housing. This includes apartments, condominiums and mobile homes. It is illegal to refuse to negotiate in these transactions based on discrimination against these protected groups. And, it is illegal to say that housing is not available if it is. Housing discrimination experts have reported several situations that indicate that illegal discrimination is probably taking place, including the following: • The manager says that there are no vacancies even though there is a “vacancy” sign; • The newspaper ad continues to appear after the manager says there are no vacancies; • The manager says there are no vacancies after saying there is a vacancy on the phone; • Upon seeing the applicant, the manager says something to try to cause him/her to decide to not rent there like “this is a dangerous neighborhood” or “it is dangerous for children.” • The manager says that wheelchair ramps and other modifications cannot be made; • The manager says that the only available unit is unsafe for children because it is near the pool or on an upper level; • The manager says that only married women (or married couples) can live there with children; • The manager says that the conditions there make it difficult or dangerous for pregnant women; NOTICE TO BIDDERS The Oxnard City Council has authorized the invitation to bid on Project Specification Number DS15-21 for the Pedestrian Safety Beacons 2015-Various Locations Project. No rental unit can be limited to one person because that would eliminate families. Any limit on the number of people allowed to occupy the unit must be based on a legitimate business necessity. And, even if there is a business necessity, landlords must use a less restrictive means to achieve it, if possible.
