Our Guest Speaker - Cascade United Methodist Church
Our Guest Speaker
Chaplain LTC James W. wInn
A native of Chicago, Illinois, Chaplain James W. Winn grew up on the south
side of the city. Raising six children (along with his identical twin brother,
Richard) was no easy task for his parents; however, God’s mercy and
grace prevailed. Winn and his siblings were educated in the Chicago
Public School System. After high school, he headed to Wilmette, Illinois to
attend a small teacher’s college, the National College of Education where
he received a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Sociology.
In college, Chaplain Winn would oftentimes attend lectures at GarrettEvangelical Theological Seminary (G-ETS), a graduate school of theology
of The United Methodist Church in Evanston, Illinois. He was amazed as he listened to the
testimonies of the young seminarians, not realizing he had a story to tell as well. Winn answered
the call to ministry and enrolled in classes at Garrett Seminary in 1973. He completed the Master of
Divinity program in 1976 and became affiliated with the A.M.E. Church.
Later, Winn was inspired to join the U.S. Army as a Chaplain. Initially, he served at Fort Hood,
Texas. In a short time, he was selected to clinical work for a year in Burbank, California, where he
learned more about pastoral care. He returned to Texas before he was assigned to serve at military
bases in Germany, Greece and other locations throughout Europe. Chaplain Winn commented, “My
travels allowed me to see places I had only imagined. I was in awe of God’s beautiful world.”
In 1996, Chaplain Winn retired from the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant Colonel and he settled in Atlanta,
Georgia. For two years, he worked at the Fulton County Juvenile Court. The next two years, he
worked as a Chaplain at Gateway 24/7 in downtown Atlanta. His passion for pastoral care
motivated him to serve as a volunteer Chaplain at local group homes, personal homes, and the
Youth Detention Center, where he continues to minister. He joined Cascade United Methodist
Church in November 2010. He and his wife, Yvonne Bly Winn, have two children, Granville and Staci
Danielle, and one granddaughter, Kai.
