Sco Berggren is serving as the first PHM

Rev. Mark Kliewer has joined the PHM staff
serving along with Rev. Dane e Kong at the Maui
Memorial Medical Center. Chaplain Mark received is
M.Div. from San Francisco Theological Seminary and
was ordained by the Presbyterian Church.
Chaplain Mark recently taught a Spiritual Volunteer
Training Program at Maui Memorial Medical Center
and 8 individuals completed the 12 hour program.

The holiday season is a natural me to reflect on
the year gone by and all that happened along the
way. This certainly rings true for PHM and all those

change than ever an cipated.

In June, our Execu ve Director, the Rev. Deborah
Whisnand, announced her decision to return to
her home State of Texas, accep ng a posi on as
Clinical Chaplain at the Baylor St. Luke’s Medical
Center in Houston. She did so a er having given us 3 years of strong leadership at the helm,
reevalua ng our programs and opera ons, expanding and strengthening both our Clinical
Chaplaincy services to healthcare ins tu ons and our Clinical Pastoral Educa on (CPE)
mission. We bid her a fond aloha in July with a lovely sendoff coordinated by our Staff.
Almost immediately, the planning for Interim leadership and a Search Commi ee for a
permanent new Execu ve Director was mobilized, with input and involvement from Rev.
Whisnand, our Clinical staff, Administra ve Staff and the Board. As o en happens in our
local island network, people, connec ons, circumstances and ming all conspired on our
behalf to lead us to confirm the perfect individual as our interim leader: Ms. Linda Rich,
LCSW.
Linda had only just re red as Execu ve Director of Salva on Army’s Family Treatment
Services, having begun her service there as a Clinical Director. In true testament to her skill,
exper se and judgment, Linda inevitably rose to the posi on of leadership and re red with
the hear elt gra tude and recogni on of its staff and the clients and cons tuencies they
serve.
Effec ve July 1, 2014, Linda became our Interim
Administrator. Together with our Director of
CPE, Sergei Petrov, and Clinical Chaplains Rev. Al Miles and Rev. Gail Sugimoto-Leong, Linda oversees, manages and directs PHM’s programs, personnel,
opera ons and finances – all supposedly on a half- me basis. She has commi ed to see us through our permanent ED Search effort which is ac vely
ini ated and underway. More than simply filling a void as a ‘placeholder’,
Linda has almost seamlessly steered our course during a period of considerable challenge, providing a caring presence
and firm founda on for our Staff, our Residents and our ins tu onal partners in support of the irreplaceable services we
provide across this State.
This is the me of year to remember that change is a given, but how we respond is up to us to decide. Despite the
unexpected stressors encountered on the path le behind us, I see nothing but good dings ahead in Y2015.

Professional Advisory Group
Rod Chamberlain
PHM is blessed to have a group of professionals from the community who volunteer their
me and exper se to help guide and improve our CPE program, providing advice and consulta on on program planning, development and program evalua on. They are leaders in medicine, chaplaincy, nursing, and educa on and reflect PHM's interfaith focus. Our current PAG
group began taking shape in 2011, when PHM began prepara ons for Clinical Pastoral Educaon 10-Year Accredita on review of our CPE program. Rod Chamberlain, D.Ed., Kamehameha
Schools Vice President of Campus Educa on, agreed to chair this group and skillfully led it
through the “dire straits” of ensuring that PHM's CPE program met all of its accredita on
requirements. Rod’s leadership as a Chairperson of PAG con nued un l November 2014. We
are profoundly grateful to Rod for his exemplary service as a Chairperson and his ongoing
support of PHM through PAG.
The new PAG Chair is Clarence Liu, our “own” PHM Staff Chaplain, who re red from
Hospice Hawaii in 2012 a er serving PHM since 1994. PAG currently consists of: PAG
