Exploring Winston Salem 1 - Visiting International Researcher
Your Guide to Winston Salem
With a population of about 225,000 people, Winston-Salem, North Carolina is the home of Wake
Forest University. It is
located in North
Carolina’s Piedmont
Triad and within hours to
the Blue Ridge
mountains and NC
coastal
beaches. Winston Salem
(or just Winston as many
locals call it) is The City
of the Arts, as it was the
first city in the US with its own Arts Council. You’ll see this dedication to cultural enrichment in
the many art galleries, film and music festivals, block parties, and city-wide initiatives that you’ll
find throughout the city.
If you’re looking to travel outside of Winston-Salem, you’re also in luck as it is close to several

Jenny’s Restaurant Recommendations
People are sometimes surprised at how much variety there is in Winston Salem’s restaurants.
There’s a little bit of everything, and new options popping up all the time. This list is in no way
solicited from any of the restaurants below. Be sure to let us know if you try a restaurant that’s
not on the list that you think should be!
Best Mexican:
La Botana Mexican Restaurant-1547 Hanes Mall Blvd- http://www.labotana-ws.com/
You’ll find dishes that are fairly unusual for this area. The food is fresh, delicious, authentic. The
Molcajete and black bean chimi are killer and there are a ton of vegetarian options.
Best Middle Eastern:
Mooney’s-101 W. 4th Street- http://www.mooneysmedcafe.com/
Mooney’s makes me happy. The staff is so very nice and you’re not gonna find better falafel in
Winston. Try the Ace of Falafel or the Tawook. The baba ghanoush is awesome, too!
Best Pizza:
Burke Street Pizza-1140 Burke Street- http://www.burkestreetpizza.com/
Traditional New York Style Pizza. Low on the grease, high on the cheese. Simple, good.
Mellow Mushroom -314 West 4th Street- http://mellowmushroom.com/
A hippy trippy tasty experience.
Mission Pizza -707 N. Trade Street- https://www.facebook.com/MissionPizzaNapoletana
New, local artisan pizza. Amazing crust.
Best Quick Lunch Near Campus:
Rose’s Deli -5000 University Parkway- http://www.rosesdeli-ws.com
Rose’s offers your general sandwich shop fare. The fries are awesome, though.
Cookout- 339 Akron Drive- http://www.cookout.com/
The Tray is an amazing value and this local chain satisfies any fast food craving.
Best Southern:
Both are incredible. Both make me glad to be southern. You can expect a thoughtful, delicious,
gourmet meal at both restaurants.
Milner’s – 630 S. Stratford Road- http://www.milnerfood.com/
Milner’s is bigger and has a more extensive menu and wine list and a great bar. Try the
Moravian Cookie Crusted Salmon
Mozelle’s. -878 W Fourth Street- http://mozelles.com/
Mozelle’s is smaller but makes up for that with truly friendly service and great daily specials.
Try the Tomato Pie.
Best Barbecue:
This is tough. Winston Salem is less than an hour from the home of Lexington-style BBQ. If you
make it to Lexington, go to Speedy Lohr’s (8000 NC Highway 150, Lexington). If you don’t
feel like driving all that far, Little Richards (4885 Country Club
Rd- http://www.eatmopig.com/) is the best close-by. If you feel like trying more than one style,
Prissy Polly’s (729 Highway 66 South, Kernersville- http://www.prissypollys.com/ ) has both
Lexington and Eastern style. (Be aware that NC BBQ is pulled pork).
Best Asian:
Sampan- 985 Peters Creek ParkwayThis is a local secret where you can get amazing Chinese food with a home-cooked flair. I know,
it has bad lighting and can look kinda scary. Be brave.
Best Place to Have a Beer with Dinner:
Foothills Brewery – 638 W Fourth Street- http://www.foothillsbrewing.com/
Foothills offers great hand-crafted beers and great pub food. Try the Pilot Mountain Pale Ale
with the fish and chips. Or the Carolina Blonde with anything.
Best Breakfast:
Mary’s Gourmet Diner- 723 N Trade Street- http://www.breakfastofcourse.com/
They’re also awesome for lunch, brunch, anytime really. The food is local grown and organic
(when possible), and there is a huge selection of teas.
Bagel Station- Whitaker Square Shopping Center- http://www.bagelstation.net/
Fantastic fresh bagels with a great variety.
Best Coffee:
Krankies- 211 East Third Street- http://www.krankiescoffee.com/
A bit of a hipster hangout, live music, occasional craft fairs and movie nights. Great coffee.
The Hive- 301 Brookstown Avenue- http://www.twincityhive.com/
Great coffee, teas, and artisan chocolate
Best Bakery:
Atelier on Trade- 533 N. Trade Street- http://www.atelierontrade.com/
Expect well crafted, inventive pastries. Chef Pablo, Le Cordon Bleu trained, is very friendly and
super talented.
Granny’s Donuts- 806 NC Highway 66, Kernersville
This place is worth driving to Kernersville for. The fritters and donut holes are amazing.
Best Place to Take a Lunch Date:
4th Street Filling Station- 871 4th Street- http://theoldfourthstreetfillingstation.com
Relaxed but very nice. Shrimp and grits are awesome.
Willow’s Bistro – 300 S Liberty St Suite 125- http://www.willowsbistro.net/
Great atmosphere, vibrant, tasty food.
Best Place to Take a Dinner Date:
The Spring House. – 450 N Spring Street- http://springhousenc.com/
Voted most romantic dinner in the Triad, Chef Grandinetti knows exactly what he’s doing.
Best Indian:
Nawab. – 129 South Stratford Road- http://www.nawabindiancuisine.com/
There’s a decent lunch buffet, but their dinner dishes are much better. Try the Malai Kofta.
Best Hot Dog: This is a tough one. There’s a lot of good hotdog places, so I say try them in this
order and report back with your findings. Remember, many of these only take cash.
PB’s- 1412 South Hawthorne Road
Pulliam’s – 4400 Old Walkertown Road
Kermit’s – 2220 Thomasville Road
Skippy’s- 624 W 4th Street
Best Ice Cream:
Blue Ridge- 262 South Stratford Road- https://www.deweys.com/bakery-blue-ridge-ice-cream/
Ice cream and gelatos in both traditional and unique flavors. The bittersweet chocolate gelato and
the honey ice cream are favorites.
Best Greek:
Grecian Corner- 101 Eden Terrace- http://www.greciancorner.com/
The best Chicken Souvlaki I’ve ever had. Family run, friendly, and fast. Try the spanakopita, it’s
ridiculously good. But bring cash, these guys don’t take card.
Best Food Truck:
Camel City Grill - http://camelcitygrill.com/
Specializing in exciting gourmet burgers. Parks near campus at least one day a week.
The Screaming Radish- https://www.facebook.com/thescreamingradish
Great burgers, salads, and chicken sandwiches. The homemade chips are the best.
