Napoleon Dynamite is a movie directed by Jared Hess and produced by MTV Studios, Fox Searchlight Productions, and
Paramount Pictures. The movie came out in 2004 and the song during the title sequence is titled “I Can Tell We’re Gunna
Be Friends” by the White Stripes.
The movie poster of Napoleon Dynamite sets the scene for the title sequence as well as the
entire movie itself by demonstrating a hand-written technique in drawings and coloring as well as in
typography.
Elements involved in the poster and the title sequence range in different typefaces used as well
as a variety of imagery. During the entire title sequence all typography used appears to be hand made
using what looks to be ketchup, or some food substance. Type also used is relatable to a typewriter
typeface, such as Courier New, as shown on frames 4, 10, 11, 12, and 17. Another type of typography is script, which is also handwritten and can be seen on frames 11, 12, 15, and 16. In numerous
frames, food is used as the main form of imagery, placed in the center of the overall frame. Imagery
also used are cards, aluminum foil, line paper, chapstick, pencils, and an eraser. Imagery found in the
title sequence are also evident on the movie poster (pencil, drawings, line paper). All of these types of
imagery are school related, which is intentional to relate and introduce the movie itself.
Hierarchy in the poster is used in a somewhat unconventional way. Normally there is a big
main title with the headline smaller and underneath the title. However, the Napoleon Dynamite poster
shows the subtitle at the top in all caps but a smaller point size, with all imagery placed in the middle
of the page to guide your eye to the bottom where in a much larger point size the title, Napoleon Dynamite, is written in a handwritten script on line paper (both of which seen in the title sequence).
The format of the poster is vertical to accentuate the height of Napoleon himself, as he is the
main character. This allows everything around him to be secondary, also showing a form of hierarchy.
The structure within the format is Napoleon in the center, with all other elements (other characters, drawings, miscellaneous bits relating to the movie) surrounding him. There is also a drawing
narrowing at Napoleon’s center to guide your eye to the center of the poster where he is placed. The
subtitle is shown at the top of the page, as the title is shown at the bottom while mandatory information
regarding the movie is shown below the title.

The articles presented to us are very different in forms of elements, hierarchy, format, and structure.
Although it’s the same article, the two forms of distribution of it appeal to different audiences. This is most
prevalent in the structure of the web based versus the magazine based format. There is only one advertisement
placed in the article in the magazine, and it is for a railway service. Advertisements placed in the web based
article are for smartphones, cameras, Google, and three-dimensional movies. In comparing the advertisements,
the web based article is directed towards a more technological crowd who would use the web to read the article, whereas the magazine article advertisement will maybe focus more on the traveler who would have a
magazine in hand when aboard a plane or a train (which is what the advertisement was in fact advertising). The
structure for the web based article is also less designerly than the magazine article. This is evident in the way
the body text is aligned jagged right. Also, images that are more prevalent in the magazine are far more smaller
and less significant in the web based article. To be noted in the web based structure are the title, search engine,
and tabs significant at the top of every page including links to quickly access other pages of fastcompany.com.
The magazine article is also more designerly by the use of elements, such as type and imagery. There
are corresponding designs used to introduce the article, as well as to break paragraphs. There are three typefaces used in the magazine article: the body text, also a sans-serif and serif typeface used to enhance quotes.
As said before, the imagery used in the magazine is far more predominate to call attention to the people being
discussed. In the web based article there is one typeface used throughout, using only bold to show hierarchy.
Hierarchy is yet another category to be discussed. In the magazine article hierarchy is used for the title
of the article, captions of images, first sentences of a new paragraph, as well as “pulled quotes” which are
important/relevant quotes used in the article itself. In the web based article, as stated above, the only sense of
hierarchy within the article itself are the use of bold to accentuate the title (which is a few point sizes larger
than the body text).
The format of the magazine article is a standard 8 x 11 vertical orientation with a spread layout. The
format of the web based article is suitable to fit every computer and will also format to be viewable on smartphones.
