Tragic Crash And Loss of Poland’s President
Unites Polonia Around The World
Polish Americans in Southeastern
Pennsylvania joined with Polonia around
the world to mourn the loss of Poland’s
President Lech Kaczynski, his wife Maria,
and 94 other representatives of Poland,
including military leaders, clergy and
government officials killed in the plane
crash on Saturday, April 10, 2010. They
were enroute to the City of Smolensk
in Russia to commemorate the 70th
Anniversary of the Katyn Forest Massacre
where nearly 22,000 Polish soldiers were
slain at the order of then Soviet leader
Lech Kaczynski
Joseph Stalin. What made this plane crash
more tragic is that Poland’s representatives died just a short distance
from where the Katyn Forest Massacre took place 70 years ago.

On Friday, April 16th, at 7 P.M. the Polish American community
in the Philadelphia area gathered for a Memorial Mass for President
Kaczynski and the other victims of the plane crash in St. Adalbert’s
Church, Thompson Street and Allegheny Avenue in the Port
Richmond section of Philadelphia, PA. Over one thousand people
attended the Mass with representatives of the Polish American
Congress, (PAC), Eastern Pennsylvania District. Msgr. Francis
Feret, Pastor of St. Adalbert Church and Vice Chaplain of the PAC,
celebrated the Mass. Fr. Thaddeus Gorka was the homilist. Over
250 individuals participated in the Memorial Mass procession
which included Polish Army Veterans, Polish Scouts, Polish Eagles
Sports Club, St. Adalbert Polish Language School, St. John Cantius
Polish Language School, PKM Polish Folk Dance Group members
and officers of the Polish American Congress, Eastern Pennsylvania
District.
On Tuesday, April 13th, there was also a special memorial and flag
raising service in Campbell’s Square in Port Richmond, Philadelphia,
where many people, including the Polish Army Veterans, Polish
Scouts, and members of the Polish American Congress demonstrated
their solidarity with the people of Poland.

On Saturday, April 17th, there was a Memorial Mass in Pilsudski
Square in Warsaw, Poland, which was followed by the Funeral Mass
of Poland’s President Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria, on Sunday,
April 18th, at 2 P.M., in Krakow’s Wawel Cathedral, the historic
1,000-year-old Cathedral and resting place of Poland’s Kings and
Heroes.
Newspaper articles, television coverage and Memorial Masses
across the world united Poles as they mourned the victims of the
