2010 A N N U A L R E P O R T TIMELESS Opportunity Brings Ability to Life 502 West Germantown Pike Suite 200 Plymouth Meeting, PA 19462 Phone: 610-825-9360 www.kencrest.org www.facebook.com/kencrest www.twitter.com/kencrest MESSAGE FROM THE KENCREST EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CELEBRATES OUR 105TH ANNIVERSARY umpkins at harvest time. Winter snow. Flowers in a Philadelphia spring. The moon and waves lapping at the Jersey shore. We might be able to agree that these are timeless in nature. We may also understand that our great rivers, the Delaware and Schuylkill, hold the concepts of timelessness and constant renewal within their banks. The river is always there and yet it is never the same river. KENCREST’S MISSION OF HELPING OTHERS IS TIMELESS. Throughout history we can find examples of one person offering assistance to another. It is a part of human nature that will hopefully live on forever. As an agency, KenCrest has practiced this loving tradition for more than a century. We mark our 105th anniversary of service in 2010. As individuals, many of our staff have spent well over half of their life span working for KenCrest. This year we celebrate 100 staff who have been working And you could also say the same about KenCrest. Very soon we will announce the Sister Grace Jones Award recipient for 2010. This individual will demonstrate characteristics embodied in the life and work of Sister Grace. This deaconess of the Lutheran Church is remembered for her work with developmental disabilities and for her great influence in helping our 1955 board adopt our current mission. Grace, of course, follows in the spirit of our founder, Sister Maria Roeck. From Sister Maria’s earliest moments she spoke of service to those in need and support within the community. Maria understood she could not accomplish much alone and gathered like-minded people around her. She recruited volunteers in a system of auxiliaries that raised visibility, understanding, advocacy, and financial support. Her success should be self-evident. for KenCrest for 20 years or more and 20 staff who have been here more than 30 years. On the other hand, 273 staff just embarked on their journey of helping others at KenCrest this year. For many of the individuals KenCrest supports, the agency’s welcoming arms have been extended throughout most of their lifetimes. This year we welcomed 1,145 infants and toddlers into our services. There are also 104 people being served by KenCrest who have been with the agency for 20 years. And 14 individuals have received KenCrest’s help for 40 years or more. Timeless: a vibrant KenCrest mission, a vast array of KenCrest’s services, and the generosity of KenCrest donors and volunteers. KenCrest celebrates our 105th Anniversary and the timeless spirit of our founding Sisters is evident throughout the pages of this Annual Report. Timeless: KenCrest’s gratitude for years of dedication and support. Thank you. In grateful response for all that we have inherited, we continue the important work of KenCrest Centers. We are renewed each day by staff and volunteers who work and advocate on behalf of our mission in the halls of the buildings where we work and in the halls of congress in Washington, D.C. Let our gratitude and thanksgiving be loud and strong. Thank you for what YOU do on our behalf. Thanks to all of you. William J. Nolan Executive Director 1 SUPPORTING THROUGHOUT THE LIFETIME: A LONG-TERM COMMITMENT SUPPORTING THROUGHOUT THE LIFETIME: NEW BEGINNINGS It does not take long for Fran DeMara to warm up to strangers. When he does, he immediately wins Mekhi Thomas has deep brown eyes, long eyelashes, and a beautiful smile – an absolute charmer at you over with his smile. Fran was diagnosed with Down syndrome at birth. He was just three years old when he started attending KenCrest’s Roxborough Early Intervention Center in Philadelphia, where his mother Sherry volunteered as a teacher aide. In 1973, when Fran began going to the center, KenCrest supported 270 children. Now, KenCrest serves over 6,500 children. As Fran reached his preteen years, his parents searched for just the right place that would take care of his medical issues and attend to his special needs. He was placed in a KenCrest group home in Philadelphia. “The staff there made us feel so comfortable with this big change we were making in our lives. We felt like everyone was considerate of Fran’s needs.” 17 months old. What makes Mekhi different than most children his age is that he has cerebral palsy. His mother, Tamara noticed delays in Mekhi’s development at just two months old. She took him to a neurologist and he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. KenCrest provided him with a special instructor to help Tamara with her son’s development. “When I started with this little boy,” says KenCrest special instructor Shelia Randall as Mekhi sits in her lap smiling, “he just laid and looked at me.” Shelia massages Mekhi’s muscles and sings songs to him to help stimulate muscle movement. She also fits him with splints for his thumbs so that he can easily pick up toys to play with. When Fran moved into his first group home, he was one of fifty individuals supported in KenCrest’s community living settings. Today, he is one of 312. He lives in a KenCrest home in Northeast Philadelphia with two other men his age. When Fran is not at home, he goes to a workshop every weekday, practicing painting and other skills. Fran spends many weekends at his family home with his parents. When he is home, Fran and his family keep busy with activities like marching in the Reilly Raiders Bugle Corps, an accomplishment that he is very proud of. “We are fortunate that KenCrest has quality staff, and that they can work with Phil and I to make sure Fran is getting the right supports,” says Sherry, “KenCrest has been involved with my son for 37 years, and they have always done a fantastic job.” When people choose to give to KenCrest, the commitment they make can span a lifetime. 2 “The best thing about Shelia is that she works with me,” said Tamara, “Everyone has the same goal. Everyone wants him to do well. And the progress he has made in the past six months... it makes me so proud of him! Now I feel I’m ready for whatever happens next.” It has been over a year since his diagnosis, and Mekhi has come a long way. “He can say five words,” says Mom proudly, “And he says them all on his own.” Mekhi also attends day care and uses a walker to help him keep up with the other children. “This was a big deal. He has really come a long way,” says Shelia. “One of the issues with cerebral palsy is the affect it has on cognitive development. But Mekhi is making his own decisions. It’s a great sign of what he is capable of.” Because of KenCrest and its gracious donors, Mekhi has hope of achieving what most thought was impossible. 3 SUPPORTING THROUGHOUT THE LIFETIME: ACTIVE SENIORS GIVING: TIMELESS THANK YOU When it comes to people KenCrest supports, each one has a unique personality that shines. PRESIDENT’S CLUB – 2010 Jim and Karen Rowley Scott and Deanna McCloskey Marguerite Schultz is an extraordinary person, a fascinating woman who also happens to be one of the oldest people supported by KenCrest. The President of the Board of Directors Michael and Pam Schuessler W. James and Dina McFalls of KenCrest Centers recognizes and Jas and Annette Szygiel Gary and Carol Moll thanks the top individual donors to our Carl and Jean Uehling LeRoy and Doris Oelschlager mission during the past year. Todd and Barbara Vanett Vic and Jan Ostroff Charles and Donna Vaselaar Kathryn Pokalo Robert and Kathy Weibel Sylvester Puzio Marguerite is 81 years old. She began her journey at KenCrest in 1999 as a resident of a community home in Pottstown. She currently resides with three other adults and her bird Jimmy in Royersford where she has happily lived since 2004. Born in Norristown, she spent her childhood in Conshohocken where she was a babysitter for the mayor’s children. She reminisces about churning homemade ice cream and helping her mother make homemade doughnuts. “She is like the ‘Grandmother of KenCrest,’” says director Vicki Derr. “Everyone calls her Grandma because she acts like one to the KenCrest family. She is always worrying or asking how you or your family is doing. Marguerite truly cares about everyone.” “I like the people here with me… especially the guys,” Marguerite laughed, with a sly smile on her face. She leads a busy lifestyle. She gets manicures every two weeks, attends church, bakes treats for her friends, and shops (jewelry, crafts, and clothing are some of her favorites). Marguerite is also dedicated to arts and crafts and uses her talents at latch work to make rugs for the KenCrest staff. She is also an avid polka dancer and participates in a bowling league where she has earned plenty of trophies. With the help provided by our donors, Marguerite is able to make the most out of her life, regardless of her age and disability. $1,000+ Richard and Anne Segermark Chris and Eloisa Bagley Jerry and Sally Beil $500-999 Maria Simms Randall and Shannon Brown Juan Arboleda Mary Smith Norman and Arlene Chaikin Bernard and Margaret Bamford Carol Spillane Hal and Bonnie Davidow Dale and Kathy Beck James and Eileen Stubblebine Robin Fritz James and Mary Jane Brenneman John Ungerman Jay and Elizabeth Grimes Peggy Brill Elizabeth Urbanchuk-Ross James and Mallary Hatch Richard and Gail Caddy James and Linda Van Horn Charles Horn III Lawrence Candela Richard and Lynda Wolff John and E.
