The Birthday Massacre return
with a new EP titled “Imaginary
Monsters” in August, sporting
three brand-new anthems, five
searing remixes and the video
clip for “In The Dark” in HD. As
almost anyone was haunted by
something in their childhood,
what are The Birthday Massacre’s personal monsters? “I’ve
always been afraid of spiders,
but I never had any hideous
fantasy monster I feared when I was a kid. I
was always afraid of ‘other people’. I knew that
there was no such thing as vampires, or corrosive slime-monsters, or hair-covered wildebeasts
under the bed - but there were bad people”, Chibi
recounts. M. Falcore says: “When I was a kid, I
had these recurring nightmares with little green
men that were similar to ‘Sprout’ from the Green
Giant commercials, but there was three of them
and they were really scary. And these creepy
guys were the designers of my nightmare. But,
I haven’t seen them in a really long time. Maybe
it’s because they stopped playing those Green
Giant commercials (laughs).” And Rainbow adds:
“Growing up, I used to have nightmares about
‘Sweetums’ (from ‘The Muppet Show’) tickletorturing me. It’s funny how ridiculous some
nightmares can seem when you recount them
while you’re awake. To be honest, these days
I’m more frightened of things like Jersey Shore’
and ‘Bieber Fever’.” Understandably so. The new
tracks on “Imaginary Monsters” were conceived
during or after the recording of the last album,
as M.Falcore reveals:“‘Forever’ was a track that
almost made it onto Pins And Needles, but didn’t
get finished up until just after the album deadline.
‘Left Behind’ was originally an instrumental and
has been floating around for awhile. And, ‘Burn
Away’ was conceived after Pins And Needles was
released. I think these three songs are a good indication of where we are right now musically, and
I can’t wait to hear what our fans think of them.”
For the remixes, the band reverted to a group of
trusted acquaintances. “I’m really pleased with
all of them. We’ve been friends with
Dave Ogilvie, Kevvy Mental and
Andy from Combichrist for a long
time, and it’s cool to see their takes
on the songs. I love Kevvy’s vocals
on the remix for ‘Pale’”, Chibi says.
And what are The Birthday Massacre
up to now? M.Falcore reports: “For
the next little while we’ll be promoting Imaginary Monsters. There’s a
possibility of a US tour in the Fall,
but nothing confirmed, as of yet.
The important thing for us right now
is to expand on our creative side.
We’ve spent a lot of time touring
the last couple years, and we feel
the need to get back to our creative
side. And of course, we’ll start writing the next album soon.”

The Birthday Massacre kehren im August mir einer neuen EP
zurück: „Imaginary Monsters“ enthält drei brandneue Hymnen, fünf knallige Remixe, sowie den Videoclip zu „In The
Dark“ in HD. Monster unter dem Bett kennt fast jeder aus
der Kindheit, was hat die Mitglieder von The Birthday Massacre in Angst und Schrecken versetzt? „Ich hatte immer Angst
vor Spinnen, aber nie vor irgendwelchen Fantasiemonstern.
Vielmehr Angst hatte ich vor ‚anderen Leuten‘. Ich wusste,
dass es keine Vampire oder ätzende Schleimmonster gibt,
wohl aber böse Menschen“, erinnert sich Chibi. M.Falcore
gibt zu Protokoll: „Ich hatte immer wiederkehrende Alpträume mit kleinen, grünen Männchen, die mich an die ‚Green
Giant‘ Werbung (= das amerikanische Pendant zu Bonduelle) erinnerten, nur dass drei davon da waren, die meinen Alptraum gebaut haben. Heute habe ich sie nicht mehr.
Vielleicht, weil es die Werbung nicht mehr gibt (lacht).“ Und
Rainbow fügt hinzu: „Ich wurde von ‚Sweetums‘ aus der
Muppet Show einer Kitzelfolter unterzogen. Es ist seltsam,
wie albern einem diese Sachen vorkommen, wenn man erwacht. Heute habe ich eh‘ mehr Angst vor Justin Bieber.“ Die
neuen Songs auf der EP entstanden während oder nach den
Sessions zum letzten Album, wie M.Falcore erzählt: „‚Forever‘ wäre fast auf Pins And Needles gekommen, aber wir
haben es nicht geschafft, den Song zur Deadline fertig zu
stellen. ‚Left Behind‘ war eigentlich ein Instrumentalstück,
das wir schon vor einer Weile aufgenommen hatten, während ‚Burn Away‘ komplett nach den Album-Sessions komponiert wurde. Alle drei Songs sind perfekte Beispiele dafür,
wo wir uns musikalisch gerade befinden und wir können es
kaum erwarten, zu erfahren, was die Fans über sie denken.“
Die Remixe hat die Band in die Hände von Freunden und Bekannten gelegt. „Ich finde sie alle toll. Wir sind schon lange
mit Dave Ogilvie, Kevvy Mental und Andy von Combichrist
befreundet und es ist echt klasse, zu
sehen, was die Jungs aus den Stücken gemacht haben. Ich liebe z.B.
Kevvys Gesang auf dem Remix von
‚Pale‘,“ erzählt Chibi. Und was plant
die Band als nächstes? M.Falcore
berichtet: „Zunächst werden wir alle
Energie in die Promotion für Imaginary Monsters stecken. Möglicherweise gibt es auch eine US-Tour im
Herbst, aber das ist noch nicht ganz
raus. Am wichtigsten ist nun für
uns, unserer kreativen Seite wieder
mehr Raum zu geben. Wir haben
die letzten Jahre fast permanent auf
Tour verbracht und das ist etwas zu
kurz gekommen. Außerdem werden
wir natürlich mit dem Schreiben
von Songs für das neue Album anfangen.“
