My son Eric is an ASE certified Master Mechanic and lives in Rocklin Ca. In his spare time, he is always
working on one car or another in his garage and driveway. One day several years ago, a man who lives in
the neighborhood stopped by and said that he has a 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente Convertible he wanted
to sell. He wanted a lot of money for it and Eric forgot
about it. About a year ago, he stopped by again and
said he had to move and made an offer Eric could not
refuse. The man wanted someone who would fix it up
and enjoy it, as it was a one family owned car.
The car had been stored since 1999 and the engine and
trans had been rebuilt but were not in the car. The
neighbor had the engine rebuilt with a modified cam and
302 crank, also the trans with a shift kit, with the
intention of restoring the car. Now Eric, being very
particular, tore the engine apart to inspect it and replace whatever seals that had dried out in the last 15
years.
After rebuilding the suspension and making sure everything was in order, he installed engine, trans and
limited slip differential, he set about working on the exterior of the car.
Being unhappy with some of the trim pieces, he
looked for and found a parts car, a 64 hardtop and
used the best of both cars together. Most all of the
paint is original including a lot of door dings, but still
looks good. The hood has been repainted due to
some damage.
He left a few issues for me to deal with, such as the
seats need reupholstering, and I want to install a
front disc brake kit. This car was a one family owned car and now is a two family owned car. I am looking
forward to enjoying it as well as my other cars for many years to come.
