THE LAMPLIGHTER July 2016 Volume 24, Issue 7 “To everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven…” Ecclesiastes 3:1 As I type this on my laptop, I am sitting in my office at Maple Springs UMC, surrounded by boxes and bulletin drafts for my final Sunday in worship. Before me sits my well-worn Bible, open to the pages of Ecclesiastes. Like you, I am going through a season of change. Our son, Thomas, graduates from Reagan High School and will begin Forsyth Tech later this summer. Our daughter Ellen is now a senior at Salem College. After four years of ministry together, my husband Jeff and I will each become senior pastors of wonderful congregations in the same city. We are overjoyed at all of these events, but we are aware that transitions like these can be emotional. Yes, I expect to shed a few tears this Sunday (June 12), just as I expect that some tears will be shed at Ardmore as Pastor Jock says his goodbyes after six meaningful years of ministry among you. Just as I am thankful to live in a beautiful state like North Carolina that truly enjoys four seasons, I am also thankful for the seasons of ministry God has given me. Over my 27+ years of ministry, I have had the blessings of many different ministry environments. I enjoy both traditional and contemporary worship, and I have had the joy of supervising many amazing people in their ministry work. God has given me the opportunity to make disciples and to build Christian leaders, and I am so excited about what lies ahead at Ardmore. I hope to be a part of Ardmore’s ministry for years to come, as we work together to help the church fulfill not only its commission but also its full potential for Jesus Christ. I look forward to helping you earnestly connect with one another and also with your community. I am eager to listen for God’s voice along with you, and to serve as a faithful shepherd and leader for you. I will move to the office on June 28 and will be with you in worship on July 3. I look forward to sharing my first message with you in worship on July 24, after I return from a Continuing Education event at Iona Abbey in Scotland. It will be a privilege to serve you as your new senior pastor. Looking Forward, Pastor Bev Coppley Connect to God, one another and the world. Of course I’m referring to our United Methodist distinction of beginning our clergy appointment year each July 1. Annual Conferences around the world are meeting now, or have already met and “fixed” their clerical appointments for the upcoming year. Each year our Western North Carolina Conference holds its Annual Conference at Lake Junaluska, and a big part of the week is the fixing of appointments, which is always the last order of business following Sunday worship. But the Conference isn’t just about the business of clergy appointments. Every year it revolves around a theme that’s meant to encourage not only the clergy but all the members of a congregation. This year’s theme was “Go Light Your World,” and Bishop Goodpaster was sure to lift up the many ways we’re equipped to do just that. On Sunday morning each member of the congregation was given a miniature flashlight to remind us of this charge. It’s a big job, but it’s made more manageable by remembering that there are numerous lights out there along with our own. Even with the bright sunlight through the windows of Stuart Auditorium on Sunday morning you could see the flickers from all of our flashlights as we clicked them on and off. And this reminded me of the power of many lights shining together. Our world is changing faster than ever, and we are in dire need of bright and hopeful light. Residents of Orlando are reeling from the recent terror attacks in that city. Brussels and Paris will never be the same following the savage attacks on their citizens. All over the world, scores of people are going hungry Thank You Cheryl and I send our thanks to the good people of Ardmore Church for the many expressions of remembrance and gratitude that we have received as we retire. You have blessed us immeasurably and we are truly grateful for each one of you. Know that you will continue in our prayers. Again, we ask that you receive your new Senior Pastor Bev Coppley with all the love and grace you have shown us. Turn your eyes upon our Lord Jesus daily and be the Body of Christ. Abide in Him and He will abide in you. God bless and keep you. Our love and thanksgiving, Jock & Cheryl Ollis 3 and jobless, and struggling to survive in even the most minimal ways. If ever we needed light, it’s now, and the light we need is the light of Christ. It’s true, one candle does a powerful job of dispelling the darkness, but many candles last much longer and bring more light. Despite the impending gloom that perennially threatens the world, we need to remember – individually, and as a congregation – that God desires for us to use the spark of grace that resides within each of us and fan it into a full flame. God is aware of evil, and even Jesus was attacked both physically and spiritually. But God also knows the change we’re capable of making if we empty ourselves to God’s guidance and let our Christ-lights shine. An ancient Greek philosopher once observed, “Nothing endures but change.” I think from this statement we derive our more modern notion, “Everything changes, and everything stays the same.” And that may very well be true. Here at Ardmore we’ve faced some pretty big changes this year including pastoral appointments and worship services. We’ll even receive a new bishop this year! Yet there are ways in which we haven’t changed at all. The most important way in which we remain the same is our dedication to serve God in this place and in the world, and that’s not only a global commitment but a personal promise we make before our Creator. This is one light we can’t extinguish. Children are learning all about Noah’s Ark from the Deep Blue Kids curriculum published by Cokesbury®. Deep Blue integrates Bible lessons, with different crafts, music and other hands on learning ideas along with a short DVD clip that students love and look forward to weekly. Our older students Pastor Ollis visiting Sunday School; hands on learning with Debbie Williams. have been combined for the summer (1st-5th grade) and are learning the same material from Genesis 6-9. Hearing these children read aloud directly from their Bibles is such a joy. Our Pre-K students are engaged with play-based learning the first hour on Sunday morning and then move to the children’s message in worship before their lessons begin in room 218. We always need additional teachers and assistants. Children and Family Ministries, continued 5 Young Adult Bible Study (YABS) and More In Hebrews 10, beginning at verse 19-25, it reads: “Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed pure with water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up on meeting together…”. Ardmore’s Young Adults are meeting regularly to study God’s word, reflect on our lives, fellowship together, support each other and hold one another accountable to this faith we collectively profess. Our God is faithful to us and we are committed to being faithful to Him. Our group has grown overnight with the addition of three new couples and we would love for you to join us, too. We meet weekly at 7:00 PM in the Reception room on the second floor of the main church building each Wednesday. Pictured left is part of our small group celebrating Gabe Asturias’s birthday. Bev Coppley, our new Senior Minister. She is anxious to meet and get to know our Ardmore members. Be sure to fill out the page about yourself, your interests, your gifts and your life in the church community, so that she will be able to get to know us from the beginning. What a positive way to come to a new congregation. I see more good things ahead for us. It feels like the “lazy, hazy, crazy (and HOT) days” of summer are here. What happened to spring? It flew by and gave us a few nice days, but then summer took over. I can’t complain about the heat because there is a lot to do in the summer. July 4th is always a good time to get together with friends and family…for fireworks, food…and fun. There are other things to do this summer. You may have already enjoyed the “Sounds of the Summer” organ concerts so far. My favorite was the one at Old Salem with our own Dreama Lovitt playing the Tannenberg organ. Thank you, Dreama, for representing Ardmore UMC so well with your musical talents. Old Salem offers band concerts and organ concerts throughout the summer. I enjoy the every other Tuesday evening band concerts on the “square” at Old Salem. Miller Park and Bethabara Park also have band concerts during the summer…and they are all free. Be sure to take a lawn chair if you go. Singing and Dancing with Tom Deaton. Lake Junaluska was wonderful, as it always is. It is such a serene and peaceful place, even with all the crowds there. I enjoyed some good worship services, Lisa Tanico’s Commissioning Service, Pastor Jock’s and Lisa Wishon’s (formerly at Ardmore UMC) Retirement service…and Pastor Jock spoke eloquently on behalf of the retirees to the new class of Deacons in Full Connection. The Celebration of Life Service was very nice and our own Rev. Donald Funderburk was remembered, along with many others who had passed away during the last year. It was wonderful to see Marian Funderburk and her family in attendance. Enjoy the rest of the summer…stay inside on these hot, hot days or go some place cool, like to a movie…in other words, stay cool. Keep busy and enjoy what you do. Remember that “every day holds the possibility of a miracle.” (source unknown) And keep in mind that miracles come in all sizes, shapes and forms. Love and Peace to All, Mary Jo Each month, The Upper Room Daily Devotional Guides are available in the Narthex. Please take one for daily devotional use. To help offset the expense of the guides, please place a $1.00 in the box near the guides, ask an usher to put it in the box or use an offering envelope from the pew, mark it for “Upper Room” and leave it in the offering plate. OUR CONGREGATIONAL CONCERNS For friends and family in need of healing: Harrison Anderson, Peggy Andrews, Polly Blackburn, Pat Blankenship, Lydia Brinker, Johnnie Bryant, Jan Carter, Jane Click, Ron Creasy, Lucy Doud, Ronda Ely, Lou Foster, Betty Frazier, Bethany Goodman, Nell Hamilton, Marjorie Harris, Carolyn Hankins, Cliff and Nancy Harvel, Ruby Houlden, Louise Hutchinson, Jerry Johnson, Larry and Elizabeth Martin, Ruth Martin, Gertrude Maynard, CP Pate, Sylvia Powell, Bruce Richardson, Jim Smith, Hank Spainhour, Nancy Stahl, Carl Stevens, Carolyn Stuart, Mary Tatum, Angie Ware, Janice Weeks, Evelyn Williams, Jim Wooten, Sofie Zuluaga For those who grieve. For those who serve our country. For those who come to Our Father’s Table Food Pantry and Clothing Closet. Remember our Homebound Do you know of a church member who has difficulties making it to worship on Sunday mornings? We provide copies of our weekly sermons on CD as well as our church bulletin. If you know of a shut-in that would like to receive either or both of these, please contact the church office and we will add them to our mailing list. 9 A BIT OF HISTORY: THEN & NOW Becky Jo Benson, the daughter of Grace Benson, like many young girls, attended church from the time she was nine years old. Becky just lived down the street on Lockland Avenue until leaving for college in 1954. Becky recalls Sunday school and services here at Ardmore UMC, as well as “MYF” Methodist Youth Fellowship and snack suppers prepared by the youths’ mothers. Becky has numerous fond memories of Ardmore of yesteryear. After finishing up college, Becky was married on June 8, 1957 by the Reverend A.C. Waggoner to her college sweetheart, Richard Teague. On June 8, 2016, Mr. and Mrs. Teague hopped in their car, leaving their current home in Charlotte for a drive to Winston-Salem. The Teague’s decided to take the day and reminisce at Ardmore, where they were married fifty-nine years prior. The Teague’s were tickled to see old portraits in the hallways of beloved pastors, the beautiful stained glass windows, the magnificent organ and all the other additions Ardmore has making it different but yet splendid. Moreover, the Teague’s were thrilled to meet Deb Jandes, our administrative assistant and myself. We had a lovely time wandering the halls and taking pictures for them to have as new keepsakes. Ardmore has such a rich history and being able to weave some of the old with some of the new was heart warming. The Teague’s hope to visit again soon possibly on a Sunday to enjoy worship with all of us. Thank you for sharing your story with me and now everyone here at Ardmore. - Nicole Stevens June 8, 1957 top, June 8, 2016 bottom 7/1 Mary O’Daniel Henry Lamkin 7/4 Mary Jo Brewer Lynn Dickens Noelle Hembree 7/5 Sylvia Powell Nancy Norton 7/6 JoAnn Buchanan Randy Carter Sandy Binford 7/7 Cindy Bullock 7/8 Patrick Flynn Owen Correll 7/9 Gaynell Hyatt Claudia Woodruff Erin Britton 7/10 Peggy Andrews Emmy Williams 7/12 Timothy Binford 7/13 David Williams 7/14 Kris Jackson 7/16 Kay Savage 7/17 Ruby Houlden 7/19 Barbara Foster Kim Correll 7/21 7/23 7/24 7/25 7/26 7/27 7/28 7/29 7/30 7/31 Mary Tatum Bob Wilkinson Sparky Owen Polly Blackburn Scotty Dickens Gail Ward Samuel Stuart Greer Collins Janice Snider Betsy Stokes Rachel Harrison Eli Atwell Larry Martin Butch Edwards Susan Creasy Joette Unks Tom Perkins Greg Brown Casey O’Toole Ray Dyer Sarah Blackwell Josh Slater 10 11 Sunday 3 9:15 AM Sunday School 10:30 AM Worship Service 10:30 AM Children's Church/Learning Time 6:00 PM BS Troop 749 Monday 4 CHURCH OFFICE CLOSED Independence Day Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday 1 12:00 PMCHURCH OFFICE CLOSES 2 5 9:00 AM TTWS Summer Program 6 9:00 AM TTWS Summer Program 11:00 AM Stitchers 7:00 PM Young Adult Bible Study 7 9:00 AM TTWS Summer Program 5:30 PM FOOD PANTRY 8 9:00 AM TTWS Summer Program 12:00 PMCHURCH OFFICE CLOSES 9 9:00 AM Girl Scout Car Wash 10 11 9:15 AM Sunday School 9:00 AM TTWS 10:30 AM Worship Service Summer Program 10:30 AM Children's Church/Learning Time 4:30 PM UMYF Snack And Program 6:00 PM BS Troop 749 12 9:00 AM TTWS Summer Program 13 UMW Yard Sale 9:00 AM TTWS Summer Program 7:00 PM Church Council Meeting 7:00 PM Young Adult Bible Study 14 UMW Yard Sale 9:00 AM TTWS Summer Program 7:00 PM Handbells 15 UMW Yard Sale 9:00 AM TTWS Summer Program 12:00 PMCHURCH OFFICE CLOSES 16 UMW Yard Sale 9:30 AM Youth at H.O.P.E. 17 18 9:15 AM Sunday School 9:00 AM TTWS 10:30 AM Worship Service Summer Program 10:30 AM Children's Church/Learning Time 6:00 PM BS Troop 749 19 9:00 AM TTWS Summer Program 6:30 PM UMM Dinner and Meeting 20 9:00 AM TTWS Summer Program 7:00 PM Young Adult Bible Study 21 9:00 AM TTWS Summer Program 5:30 PM FOOD PANTRY 7:00 PM Handbells 22 9:00 AM TTWS Summer Program 12:00 PMCHURCH OFFICE CLOSES 23 24 WELCOME REV. 25 9:00 AM TTWS BEV COPPLEY Summer Program 9:15 AM Sunday School 10:30 AM Worship Service 10:30 AM Children's Church/Learning Time 11:30 AM Luncheon to Welcome our New Senior Pastor Bev Coppley 3:00 PM Young Adult/ Family Pool Party 6:00 PM BS Troop 749 26 9:00 AM TTWS Summer Program 27 9:00 AM TTWS Summer Program 5:30 PM Nominations Committee Meeting 6:30 PM Charge Conference 7:00 PM Young Adult Bible Study 28 9:00 AM TTWS Summer Program 6:00 PM Ardmore Community Club Dinner 7:00 PM Handbells 29 VBS Set up 9:00 AM TTWS Summer Program 12:00 PMCHURCH OFFICE CLOSES 30 VBS Set up 31 1 VBS Set up 9:00 AM VBS 2016 9:15 AM Sunday School 10:30 AM Worship Service 10:30 AM Children's Church/Learning Time 5:30 PM VBS KICK OFF 6:00 PM BS Troop 749 2 9:00 AM VBS 2016 3 9:00 AM VBS 2016 11:00 AM Stitchers 7:00 PM Young Adult Bible Study 4 9:00 AM VBS 2016 5:30 PM FOOD PANTRY 5 12:00 PMCHURCH OFFICECLOSES 6 12 Food For Share Contact Us The needs for the month of July include: Give us a call for more information about our church.
