Steve Hoey offers great ideas on generating leads to the roughly forty exhibitors attending the chamber-sponsored workshop: “Sneaky Little Secrets of the Trade Show Pros”. Sneaky Little Secrets of the Trade Show Pros You’ve been hit hard by the recession. Fewer customers with fewer dollars are out there to buy your product or service. And, your cost of doing business isn’t exactly getting cheaper, is it? Well, the people willing and able to buy your product or service are out there—enough of them to not just maintain your previous levels of sales, but to GROW them. You just need to find those people and communicate to them differently than you did in the past. The secrets to attracting business dealing with competition and the new economy were revealed at the Warwick Senior Center in an eye-opening workshop. Stephen Hoey of KDF Reprographics and Michael Lake of RedLake Marketing detailed the critical steps needed to create a proper plan for the EXPO Trade Show. Attendees were coached to decide what their most effective marketing message is. They learned how to create a booth that attracts people like an electromagnet, and what the people manning your booth should do. How DOES a business entice attendees to share their contact info? Every year the Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce sponsors an official roadside cleanup throughout the entire town of Warwick. This year we are pleased to announce that ShopRite Supermarkets, Inc. is the official sponsor, providing garbage bags and refreshments for volunteers. You or your organization are invited to grab the trash bags and join in the fun Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 23-25. Operation Clean Sweep Committee Chair Lisa Montanaro of LM Organizing Solutions, LLC will coordinate the event with help from Warwick Valley High School student Heather Storms. Heather is a sophomore and an extremely active Troop 788 Girl Scout. She will be helping with flyers, banners, fundraising, and volunteer coordination. Groups, clubs, and individuals are invited to take part in this community service by pre-registering their chosen routes in order to ensure garbage pickup by the DPW. (Please note that this is for roadside refuse, not homeowner garbage.) If your business or organization is interested in serving as a sponsor, providing product donations, or offering financial support, contact the Chamber office, 986-2720. The Chamber Connection 3 EXPO 2010 promises something for everyone Know what’s real Theft Prevention Tip by Robert Baier, www.bobbaierinfo.com, author of “Identity Theft Prevention for the College Student” The census is an information gathering tool. Criminals of identity theft are constantly attempting to gather as much information about you as they can to steal from you. I believe there will be many different types of scams regarding the census coming your way. The Census has only ten (10) questions and does not ask for your Social Security Number, credit card information, or bank account information. The Census Bureau will not contact you by email, cell phone or via internet. You cannot fill out the form on-line. If you do not fill out the census and mail it in, someone, between April and June, will knock on your door. Never invite a census taker into your home. They will have official government badges marked with just their name, a Department of Commerce watermark, and an expiration date. The Census Worker will provide you with a letter from the Census Director on official letterhead. Triple Business Mixer April 13th, 5 to 7pm The businesses of Edward Jones Investments, WTBQ Radio and Jubilee Multi-Cultural Arts Center are excited to host a progressive after-hours business mixer from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. April 13th on Ronald Reagan Boulevard in Warwick, NY. See you there! 4 The Chamber Connection From the Caboose by Executive Director Michael Johndrow Hello to all, Let’s discuss membership dues as we move into spring. Your chamber is a non-profit organization which depends completely upon the revenue of its annual dues to exist. Our goal is to continue to offer you the events and promotions that are so vital to the success of our business community. Your dues, payable in January of each year, are an investment in your future, and we are proud to have you all on board. If you have not paid for the year 2010, please do so as soon as possible, so that we can continue to include you in our membership roster. It is most appreciated! Our big news, of course, is the 3rd Annual Business EXPO, coordinated by Diane Massey of ReMax Benchmark Realty. It will be bigger and better than last year’s event, so if you are not participating as a vendor please come out and support those who are. We like to think of it as our most significant “Think Local” event of the year. In February-March we had our second restaurant week titled “Winter Dining in the Warwick Valley”. Erik Johansen of the Iron Forge Inn chairs this event. Eric and Erin Pascual of Halligan’s have designed a new website, www.warwickvalleydining.com, for restaurants and businesses that support our restaurant week. Check this new resource out when you have a moment. The Warwick Merchant’s Guild, together with the Chamber, hosted the first “Winter Blues” weekend under the creative direction of Tim Mullally of Style Council. It was a great success and an excellent introduction to Railroad Avenue’s latest addition, “Blue”. There is always something new here in the Warwick Valley, and for that we can be grateful. I hope all of you are inspired by the warmer weather and I’d like to remind you to call or stop in with any request or questions. Happy Spring! Communication: April 29 Educational Program Effective communication can be the difference between success and failure in business. New chamber member, John Tinghitella, founder of Humble Confidence Inc, an Orange County training/speaking business will present his Team Communication and Alignment program to chamber members. In employee surveys nationwide, Communication ranks as the number-one challenge facing businesses today. John’s program will provide the perspective, tools and mindset to help businesses communicate effectively, reduce waste, save time and build healthy working relationships. John is a self-described “sales guy”. His career started in Public Relations, Advertising and Marketing Support for both internal and external audiences. John was instrumental in building a single brand 5M business into an 82M, multi division, best-in-class supplier. He has a strong sense for the creative solution with a keen focus on building relationships. John led numerous merger and acquisition activities throughout his career. His most recent corporate position was Vice President, Sales/Marketing for The Marinco Electrical Group. He is a graduate of Oneonta State University where he received an Honors Degree in Speech Communication. John has also participated in an Executive Extension program at the Haas School of Business, University of California at Berkeley. Don’t miss this dynamic program scheduled for Thursday, April 29th, from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. in the Greenbriar Room at Mt. Alverno. Reserve your spot by calling (845) 986-2720. Helping Our Youth Learn Skills; Job Shadowing Program Week April 19 The Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce will be conducting a Job Shadowing Program once again. We have approached the Florida School District and they will join the program. An inquiry of Greenwood Lake students has also been made. Our maximum number of students we have set at 75. The primary week will be the week of April 19th. If there is an overflow, some students may do the job shadowing the following week of April 26th. An informational meeting where the employer meets the student who will be coming to his/her place of business will be held prior to April 19th and at present Thursday April 15th in the evening is the most likely time. Employers will be invited for 6:00, students arrive and meet employers at 6:30 and information session to start at 7:00 p.m. We will try to match the student’s interest with prospective employers. Refreshments will be served. At this time we are asking you to email Doug Stage, chair person at dstage@ warwick.net and advise if you are interested. More details will be provided after the initial response is received. We are looking for a quick response. If you participated last year, we thank you. We trust it was a valuable experience and hope you can do so again. This life lesson alone is reason enough to encourage our kids to become volunteers. Schools, businesses and community organizations can help kids by creating a partnership that fosters and encourages volunteerism. We can encourage our kids to combine volunteer work with their fundraising needs. For example, if a school athletic group needs to raise funds for equipment, instead of standing outside the grocery store collecting change in a jar, why not give that same group of kids the opportunity to perform volunteer work, such as raking leaves? They earn the donation they need to keep their equipment up to date with the added bonus of knowing how good it feels to serve. Markets rise & fall Ed Lynch and fellow Edward Jones Advisors look forward to helping clients faceto-face within the community in an effort to achieve their investment goals—whether financial markets rise or fall. According to Edward Lynch, an Edward Jones Financial Advisor in Warwick, while the corporate world was shaken by layoffs, pay cuts and retrenchment, Edward Jones did not lay off one associate and continued to hire financial advisors. The firm not only endured one of the worst market cycles in its 87-year history, but earned a profit. Energy, Stress Relief, Weight Loss Ladies 35 to 55+ are the most productive segment of our society, but suffer the most due to stress, nutritional deficiencies and change of life. Raising children, maintaining your household, handling elderly parents, working, spouses… it all takes a toll. Nutrition Response Testing offered by Kramer Nutrition is the only health care system to find the 7 main interference factors which prevent proper diet, nutrition and exercise programs from working. Plans such as Nutrasystem, Medifast & Isagenix may give temporary results, only to backfire over time—they are fake foods. Limited time offer: free consultation and test of your supplements: Dr. Robert Kramer www.kramernutrition.com. Short Sales, Foreclosure Certification Ginny Warsaw with Better Homes & Gardens Rand Realty has earned the nationally recognized Short Sales and Foreclosure Resource Certification. One-third of all existing homes sold recently were either short sales or foreclosures. Ginny Warsaw is able to help sellers with the complexities of short sales and help buyers pursue both short sale and foreclosure opportunities. Realtor Ginny Warsaw If you need any assistance or guidance with the short sale process do not hesitate to call Ginny Warsaw at (845) 258-0871. Local business people are now able to make the rounds ahead of their competitors. For example; one recent flight was a direct pick-up at a corporate site in Nashua, NH, with direct delivery to Wall Street in NYC. Another recent flight was a pick-up in Central NJ with a trip to Westchester County Airport, NY; then a limousine delivery to an appointment in Greenwich, CT; a helicopter flight back to Newark Airport for a connection to Chicago’s O’Hare. Wow! In our recovering economy, these customers needed to get there fast, and ChopperCharter.com delivered.
