Where Women and Families Grow
“We are family…
I got all my sisters with me…”
R
emember that Sister Sledge song from 1979?
If Transitions had a theme song, that would be it.
It might run through your head when you visit one of
our facilities and see our women relating to one another,
building relationships, engaging in community.
For most of us, it’s the most natural thing in the world. If we
were lucky enough to be born to healthy stable families that
loved and supported us, we learned early on how to bond with
people. We went from our immediate family to a larger family
of classmates and teammates, and we learned how to make
friends. As we matured, our connections grew even wider
encompassing neighbors, co-workers, and fellow parishioners.
Pretty soon, we recognized that we were part of something
larger – a community.
But what if like Adam (page 4) your mother went to jail
when you were 5 years old and you were sent to live with your
abusive father? How would you learn to bond with anyone?
What if you left home at 15 like Kitty (page 4), spent 27 years
addicted to various substances, bouncing from place to place,
in and out of jail and homeless? How would you relate to
community?
This past year, you helped Transitions create community for
so many isolated women and children. At the Transitional
Living Center and EduCare, you helped us provide support to
mothers and children so they could bond with each other. After
periods of separation and chaos due to homelessness and
incarceration, your help enabled these fragile families to gain
strength.
You helped us provide shelter, counseling, and healing at
Miryam’s House to homeless women recovering from abuse,
addiction, mental illness and other life crises. Your help
enabled us to continue offering support, art, music and a sense
of belonging to hundreds of mostly homeless women at the
Women’s Hearth. And your support allowed the New Leaf
Bakery to provide job training to low-income women seeking a
better future for themselves and their families.
We present this annual report to you, our donors, with
heartfelt gratitude for the trust and support you gave us in
2009. These pages contain the year’s statistical data from each
program, financial data from the entire agency, a tiny snapshot
of some of the lives changed for the better through Transitions,
and most importantly, recognition for the donors who made
this work possible. Without you, we couldn’t continue the work
of providing hope and healing to those who need it most.
Without you, we couldn’t build community.

Where Women and Families Grow
Miryam’s House
A residential program for homeless women without children, Miryam’s provides case management, life-skills and
24/7 support for women recovering from abuse, addiction, mental illness and the isolation and chaos of
homelessness and incarceration. One efficiency apartment is provided within MH for pregnant and post-partum
woman. Miryam’s offers ongoing support and mentoring for alumnae of the program.
Miryam’s House: Kitty
In early April, Kitty moved into Miryam’s and her new life
began to unfold. She fulfilled the requirements of SHARPP,
took advantage of the classes, employment assessment, and
worked hard on her own recovery. Kitty also embraced the
community at
Miryam’s and used
every opportunity
provided for
growth and healing,
including bonding
with housemates
and staff. Kitty
took charge of
household
responsibilities and
let her passions for
cooking, serving
and decorating
shine at House
gatherings and
events.
And she found full time work.
Moving out is a big step. But Kitty goes with the new
skills, determination and self-confidence she developed while
surrounded by the loving and supportive community that is
Miryam’s House.

“Being here has been the best experience of my entire
life,” claims Kitty Coleman on the eve of her “graduation”
from Miryam’s House. Kitty came to Miryam’s in April 2009
and is now poised and ready to take on the challenges of an
independent, productive and sober life.
And she has worked very hard to get to this point.
Kitty left home at 15. For the next 27 years, she
bounced from boyfriend to boyfriend, state to
state and job to job. The one constant in her life
was an increasingly dangerous chemical
dependency. Starting with marijuana and alcohol,
Kitty progressed quickly through crack, meth and
IV heroin. Neither a cocaine overdose and 10-day
coma nor a series of jail sentences plus years of
homelessness could separate Kitty from her
addiction.
Until finally, she’d had enough.
Tired of running and living in fear, Kitty turned
herself in to the Spokane police in January 2009,
served time on a felony conviction and applied for
a place at Miryam’s House through SHARPP—a
re-entry program designed to help people leaving
incarceration. Determined to begin a new, safe and sober life,
Kitty chose incarceration and Miryam’s House rather than
drugs and the streets.
Transitional Living Center (TLC) and EduCare
A transitional housing program for homeless women with children under age 12,
TLC provides each family onsite case management services along with
parenting and life-skill classes. Supportive staff is available 24/7 and licensed
childcare is provided at EduCare. Services are designed to help women and
their children stabilize and heal from the isolation and chaos of homelessness.
Developing a new community in their lives helps women address the issues
which contributed to homelessness in the first place.
TLC and
TLC
and Educare: Susan & Adam
Educare:
Susan and 9 year old
Adam were a fragile
family of two when they
moved into their
apartment at the
Transitional Living
Center. They had just
been reunited after Susan’s 4-year prison term. During those
4 years, Adam had lived with his father who was both
abusive and neglectful.
This little family had so many obstacles to overcome.
While Susan had begun her recovery from drug addiction in
prison, she hadn’t yet been clean and sober “on the outside.”
Her felony conviction severely restricted her housing and
Transitions

employment opportunities. Plus she still had unresolved
issues from her own childhood of abuse. And no matter how
much Susan loved her son, he had lived almost half his life
without her. Whatever bonds of trust had been there before
were now gone.
Adam not only felt abandoned while his mom was in
prison, he now struggled with the fear that his father was
coming to take him away. Since he had learned to survive his
father’s abuse and neglect by behaving like his own parent,
Adam had to learn how to be a child again, Susan’s child. He
arrived at TLC angry, confused, and prone to outbursts —
especially at his mom. His grades were poor and behaving
appropriately at school was a challenge.
With the loving support of staff at both TLC and EduCare,
the little family settled in and began to heal. Susan took
advantage of the parenting classes, counseling sessions with
her Family Support Advocate and participated with Adam in
the community activities offered by TLC. Struggles with
behavior decreased as time together, patience and
consistency increased. Susan found fulltime work, and Adam
spent his afterschool time at EduCare, where the staff
provided consistency and more nurturing support for him.
As the months rolled by, family bonds grew stronger.
Having taken responsibility for her past behaviors and current
circumstances, Susan focused on meeting Adam’s emotional
5
needs—patiently providing him the love and attention he
craved. Adam’s behavior improved. So did his grades.
He joined a soccer team,
helped tend the TLC
community gardens, and
mother and son
volunteered together
monthly at the Humane
Society. In time Adam’s
school behavior
reflected the changes.
He began to receive
school awards for good
citizenship including a
special lunch with the
principal.
After 12 months
Chamberlain Photography © 2009
Susan and Adam were
ready to move out on their own. A year of support,
counseling, consistency, classes, patience, nurturing and love
provided by TLC and EduCare had allowed this fragile little
family to stabilize, learn how to build trust and thrive. They’re
on their own now but check in when there’s an issue and
often come back to visit old friends.
Women’s Hearth
The Hearth is a day center that provides a safe, welcoming environment where low-income and homeless women
can connect with services and engage in community. More than 100 different classes, groups and activities are
offered each month, including arts, crafts, music, spirituality, and life-skills. Referrals that link women to other social
services are made, 12-step support as well as access to telephone, mail, computer, internet, basic hygiene supplies
and showers is offered.
Women’s Hearth:
Deborah
Women’s Hearth: Deborah
One critical part of the
work we do at the
Women’s Hearth involves
building relationships of
trust so that women feel
safe enough to make
changes in their lives.
“Making a diagnosis isn’t
as important as making
a connection. If
someone is going to get
better,” wrote author
Barry Lopez in his book,
The Soloist, “it won’t be
because of a correct
diagnosis and textbook
Chamberlain Photography © 2009
treatment plan, but
because that person develops enough trust in another to
pursue his own recovery.” Building relationships of trust is
an individual experience for each woman who
comes to the Hearth.
For Deborah, it involved feeling “warmth, compassion and
acceptance from staff and women who participate in the
many Hearth activities.” Born and raised in the Seattle area,
Deborah moved to Spokane after divorce in the early 1980s,
and raised 4 sons here as a single mom. In May of last year,
she became homeless. Deborah found her way to the Hearth
where “heartbreak turned to gratitude.” She participated in
classes including Spirituality, Change and Loss and SelfEsteem, and joined in the many group meetings where
women
gather to
heartbreak
talk, share
turned to gratitude
insights, and
bond.
“I had always thought of family as persons one is related
to,” said Deborah, “but my experience at the Hearth made
me aware that we are all part of God’s human family.”
According to an SRI Gallup survey, “Lack of support or
connections to others may be the single most important
reason why people are homeless.”
Deborah is now employed and living in a subsidized
apartment. Recently she said, “I cherish every moment I
have available to be with my family at the Women’s Hearth.”

Where Women and Families Grow
New Leaf Bakery Café
The New Leaf Bakery Café completed its first full year of operation in 2009. Designed as a social enterprise
program, the New Leaf helps low-income women succeed through training in food service. The goal is to help
women develop marketable skills, build their resumes with solid work experience and become self-sufficient
through employment. Income for the social enterprise as well as experience for the trainees is generated by
catering contracts for food-to-go, and through the New Leaf Bakery Café kiosk in the Catholic Charities building.
New Leaf Bakery Café: Dora
The New Leaf Bakery Café does more than prepare
women for work in food service. It surrounds women with
nurturing support just like a family, and supplies connections
to other programs of Transitions. “This is the best thing that
has happened to me,” said Dora
about finding the New Leaf. “It
is amazing,” she went on, “like a
new family. Every day I go to
work is like going home!”
Dora, a young mother of two
boys recently suffered the tragic
loss of her husband. She had
come to the United States from
El Salvador in high school.
After completing Community
College, she met, married and
started a family with her
husband. After a few years and
two children, the couple
purchased a home. But
downsizing, lay-offs,
depression—the inability to
provide for the family became too much for Dora’s husband,
and she became a widow with two sons.
Having been out of the workforce for six years, Dora
struggled to find work. With foreclosure looming and other
bills piling up, she moved in with extended family while she
searched for a way to support herself and her children.
A referral from Career Path Services brought Dora to the
New Leaf.
“I was afraid and didn’t know what it would be like,” she
said, “but it is so much more than
I expected.” When a home on the
TLC campus became available,
Dora and her sons were able to
finally move into their own space.
At Christmas, the family was
“adopted” by some friends of
Transitions. Asked what her
biggest need was, Dora answered
“beds”, since her boys had been
sleeping on the floor. With their
own beds and their own room,
Dora has no trouble putting the
boys to sleep. “Now all I have to
say is ‘bedtime’ and off they go to
enjoy their own space.”
Dora will complete New

Leaf job training program in late
winter 2010, is currently polishing her resume and following
up on job leads. While she and her sons are still struggling
with the great loss of husband and father, the family is safe
and finding their way to recovery with the support of their
new family at Transitions.
“We are in community each time we find a place where we belong.”

Mission and Values
Transitional Programs for Women sponsors and initiates
programs which, in faithfulness to the mission of Jesus,
foster the personal growth and wholeness of women and
children in need.
Respect for Human Dignity
We believe in the dignity and inherent worth of individuals
and respect their right to self-determination.
Community
We believe that the fullness of each person is realized
in relationship with others.
Growth/Wholeness
We believe each individual is a work in progress on a journey
toward integration of mind, body and spirit, with the hope of
emotional, physical and spiritual peace.
Justice
We believe in advocating for what is right, honest and moral
both for whom we serve and with whom we serve.
