The dream is almost reality
he Annual Farragut West Knox Chamber
of Commerce Silent and Live Auction is
just around the corner on Friday, April 26!
We are very excited to have a great evening for
those attending “Turning Dreams into Reality”
as they bid on fantastic items and help several
great causes all at once.
The event will be hosted at Rothchild’s on
Kingston Pike. The evening will kick off with the
Silent Auction, followed by dinner and leading
directly into the Live Auction. If that’s not
enough, Angela Floyd School of Dance & Music
is graciously providing musical entertainment
by recording artist Keith Brown for the evening,
while the Knoxville Photobooth Company will
also be there with a booth available so guests
can have their pictures made!
Our offices are filling with Silent Auction
items including beautiful gift baskets, wines,
Wings for a Year from Wild Wings, original art,
and dinner certificates from many area restaurants. Auctioneer, Bear Stephenson, of
Stephenson Realty and Auctions will again keep
us hopping at the live auction which will feature
popular items such as a Dinner Excursion for 8
at Bonefish Grill, a full set of Michelin Tires (up
to an $800 value), a special 14k Gold $5 Coin
encased in a beautiful 14 K setting and 14 K
chain valued at $750, a deluxe Pillow Queen

Mattress set valued at $1,300 and more!
Stephenson will then move on to the themed
tables… “I Just Want To… DANCE, TRAVEL, go
to ITALY, or COOK.” Anything goes! The tabletop
sponsors may think of a theme that is totally
bizarre…not necessarily what you would do, but
if you could, what fun it would be! Several tabletop creators are still keeping quiet on their
themes; competition for this year’s “Best
Dressed Table” should be fierce!
Fifteen percent of ticket proceeds will go to
Dream Connection, a Knoxville based non-profit
charity. Dream Connection is completely
dependent on volunteer work and charitable
donations because 100% of their resources are
dedicated to fulfilling the dreams and wishes of
chronically or terminally ill East Tennessee children, ages 3 to 17. The auction also helps fund
the Chamber’s Continuing Education scholarships, which are available to all members.
Scholarships are reviewed by the Executive
Committee and granted in amounts up to $500.
These scholarships help local business leaders
afford training/schooling needed to advance in
their fields. We are very excited to also be offering a $500 scholarship during the auction as
well!
The Chamber will continue to accept donations and sponsorships through April 15! This
will us allow time for printing, making sure your
business name is listed with your item. All items
will be sold in the silent or live auction to the
highest bidder. If you have not been contacted to
participate, please contact the Chamber office
and let us know what you would like to donate.

• The Dogwood Arts Festival has selected the
Farragut Trail as the Featured Trail of 2013! The
trail will be open from April 10 to April 28; bus
tours will be offered the weekend of April 12 to

• The 9th Annual Waltz for Wishes Gala is
scheduled for Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the
Downtown Knoxville Marriott to benefit the MakeA-Wish Foundation of East Tennessee. The goal of
the Waltz for Wishes is to raise money to make
wishes come true for kids with life-threatening
medical conditions who live in Knoxville and the
surrounding areas. Tickets are $175 per person or a

• The 9th Annual Saints' Gala: An Evening on the
Hilltop, Celebrating the Flavors of Tennessee will
take place Saturday, May 11, from 6-11 p.m. on the
campus of the Episcopal School of Knoxville. The

filled with classic Tennessee flavors. If you are

Farragut High School Education Foundation, a non-profit liaison between Farragut HS and the community, helps the Knox County Board of Education keep students ahead of the curve by funding necessary
programs & technology updates. Currently, they are funding the After School Learning Center, an optional tutoring program for struggling students. They hope to update computer equipment in the library and
support teacher retention.

• Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett presented
Rural/Metro Division General Manager Rob Webb
with a proclamation naming Feb. 2 as Rural/Metro
Day in honor of the company’s 65th anniversary.
Rural/Metro has been the official emergency
ambulance service provider of Knox County since
1985 and is the only nationally accredited ambulance provider in the state.
• Pinnacle Financial Partners’ Farragut Office
is pleased to announce their newest associate,
Gina Perkins, formerly of First Tennessee Bank,

Congratulations also goes to Davidia Moore on her
retirement from Pinnacle after a banking career

• Every year, the Star 102.1 Radio-thon for East Tennessee Children’s Hospital
gives Knoxville an opportunity to help children they know and love. This year, the
two-day, 24-hour live radio-thon is April 11 and 12 at West Town Mall. Star 102.1
morning radio personalities Marc, Kim & Frank will encourage listeners to “tune
in for children” and make a pledge to help children who make 160,000 visits to
Children’s Hospital each year. Listeners will learn how their donations provide
funding for much needed specialized pediatric medical equipment to meet the
health care needs of the tens of thousands of area children served by Children’s
Hospital every year. Real-life stories from children who have been patients will be

Alexander
Dumas drew his first portrait at age four, but only
began painting when
given a painting set for
Emily Littleton
his 27th birthday. Since
then, he has painted
everything from wildlife to war. He painted
UT Football and Basketball for 14 years, and
his 1988 limited edition “Arena Building”
print helped raise money to build the UT basketball arena. During his years depicting football, he was also able to meet many iconic
personalities, including Bear Bryant, whom
he calls “a prince of a man.”
In addition to meeting heroes of football,
Dumas has met many heroes of war. He spent
four years treating sick and wounded soldiers
as a Navy hospital corpsman during and after
World War II. Dumas says, “Some of their stories were just amazing… You couldn’t believe
they had survived!”
His time in the navy inspired him to create
an entire war series—60 paintings from combat photographs of World War II, Vietnam,
and Korea. Dumas says his goal was “to give
people an understanding of what war is really like.” Each painting tells a different story;
together they depict the tension in wartime
between glory and devastation, patriotism
and suffering. For him, the series “brings
back a flood of memories.” He recalls that
“The war had a romance about it… a horrible
romance.”
Every subject Dumas paints has its own
emotion and personality. He paints from photographs of real lives and takes great care to
preserve the context and backstory behind
each snapshot. “These are individuals,” he
says, “not something I’ve concocted.”
Though Dumas has paint a myriad of subjects over the years, his favorites are cats and
dogs, His art has raised money for many charities, including the Thompson Cancer
Survival Center, Handicapped Olympics, East
Tennessee Children’s Hospital, and the
Concord Adult Day Enrichment Services program. He also teaches art classes at the
Strang Senior Center every Tuesday morning.
His gallery, located in his home, is open for
viewing to all interested: “Just give me a call!”

5 Ways
to Stress
LESS!
Stress is part of everything we do in
business and life. Even happy events
carry stress with the planning and anticipation of them! How can we combat
stress then? Realize and remember:
• Low stress lifestyles are actually
fairly efficient and well-managed.
Does a desk piled over in papers
make you feel calm or crazed?
Laziness and sloppiness usually create
more stress than they remove.
Try to declutter as much as possible.
• The daily struggles of life never end.
That day when “all your problems
will be over” will never be here.
Focus on savoring the moments as
they come rather than constantly
wrestling with aggravations while
waiting for that “happy ending.”
• Getting involved in various activities
you enjoy is great! But try to find
activities that let you focus
on the activity itself—not how well
you are performing or what you can
get out of it. Stressful emotions fade
when you can focus on the process,
not the outcome.
• Almost all forms of emotional distress are caused by how we perceive
or what we tell ourselves about what
is happening. The real story (what
actually happens to us) is often quite
different. Get a second or third
opinion of a situation if you have to!
