Mrs Logan, Director of Finance and Administration, with Gold medal-winning Construction Manager, Matt Keefe of Willmott Dixon
Construction Manager of the Year
It's incredible to think that it is
almost a year since our building
work was complete and the full
site handed over to the school.
Those of us involved in the
project for 18 months prior to
that still have fond memories of
collaborating with our builders,
Willmott Dixon. So it was with
immense pride that we went to
the CIOB Construction Manager
of the Year Awards last night, in
support of one of the 69
finalists, Matt Keefe, at a
glittering ceremony in London's
west end.
Matt Keefe joined Gildredge
House halfway through, when
the previous manager was
moved to another project, which
was a challenging time for the
build. Immediately, Matt took
the lead and, with incredible
patience, skill and good humour,
steered
the
project
to
completion.
Last night, he was one of only 10
to be awarded a Gold medal in
recognition of his achievement.
Mrs Logan and I were proud to
be there to see Matt and
Gildredge House celebrated in
this impressive event in the
presence of the best names in
the construction industry.
Visitors to our school are often
impressed by our buildings, and
in particular the Atrium and the
skilful blending of old and new.
But most importantly the site
development is testament to
what can be achieved through
meaningful collaboration and
creativity. We will always have
an affection for Matt and his
team and remember the special
part they played in the making
of Gildredge House.

Year 7 Open Day
We thoroughly enjoyed last Saturday morning’s Open Day for prospective Year 7 students and their
parents. It was a vibrant and impressive event, attended by over 900 visitors. Our students acquitted
themselves extremely well as usual and are to be congratulated and thanked for their efforts as tour
guides and subject representatives. We are grateful also to our staff who put on exciting and
memorable displays. Applications for Year 7 close on 31st October and further details of how to apply
can be found on our school website: Admissions Policy 2016-17

National Poetry Day
In celebration of National Poetry Day
Gildredge House students produced
their own poetic masterpieces on the
theme of ‘Light’ as well as
performing their own interpretations
of the poem ‘Friendship’ by the
magnificent John Hegley.
The accompanying photo shows how
much interest their endeavours
engendered.
As someone once said, ‘Poetry is
exactly the right words in exactly the
right order’ and the enthusiasm and
interest which our students showed
proved this to be the case, with just
a little artistic licence.

House Harvest
This year’s House Harvest was bigger than ever,
with tables stretching all along one side of the
Lower School Hall. Once again, students in the six
Houses donated food with packaging which
coordinated with their House colours, creating a
rainbow of red-orange-yellow-green-blue-white.
This amazing display of food was supplemented by
decorations in house colours including pictures,
poems and even a cardboard ‘Douglas’ Bader! The
food was packed off in a van to the Foodbank
today to help those in need across Eastbourne.

Lower School News
Last Wednesday the Year 1 parents were invited
to attend a Curriculum Evening to help them to
support their children’s learning at home.
Feedback from parents was that the evening
provided lots of information and fun activities.
We hope to run further Curriculum Afternoons
for any parents who would find it helpful after
Christmas.
This half term we have introduced Book Buddies with our Year 2 students coming to read to the Year 1
students each week. As you can see from the pictures, the children in Year 2 love being good reading
role models and the Year 1 children have enjoyed hearing all the stories. Each class even had a visit
from one book character who came to answer the questions they had written. Thank you to Sami and
Adam for playing the role of Max so well to each class! Later in the school year it will be the turn of the
Year 1 children to read to the Reception children.
