THE BULLETIN 2012/2013 No. 2 September 2012 Page 3 Page 4 Stainless Steel Pet Food Bowl Notice Aug 12, 2012 Petco announced that one of its foreign suppliers used stainless steel mistakenly containing small quantities of Cobalt-60 when fabricating certain orders of certain SKUs/models of stainless steel pet food bowls. Cobalt-60 is a radioactive material commonly used in industrial gauging equipment and other uses. It is believed that the Cobalt-60 was in recycled scrap metal. The Cobalt-60 levels in the affected products are far below State and Federal regulatory limits. All of the expert testing conducted on these products to date indicates that there is no health risk to the public, to our associates or to pets. Customs and Border Protection agents made the discovery during a routine import screening of the second of two containers. That container was held at the port and the products never reached Petco. The first container did reach Petco’s distribution network. Petco has removed from their store shelves and website all products from the supplier that produced the bowls. Some affected items were sold to consumers before the problem was discovered. Petco is working to contact those customers retrieve those particular bowls. Customers who purchased these products between the dates of May 31 and June 20, 2012, should bring it to their local Petco store for a full refund. If you have any questions, please call Petco Customer Service at 877-738-6742. Bil-Jac Dog Food Recall August 24, 2012 – Bil-Jac Foods of Medinia Ohio has announced a voluntary dog food recall of a limited number of one of its dry products due to possible contamination with mold. September 2012 Hot Weather Tips (Source: Los Angeles Animal Services Web Site) Dogs and cats are less efficient at cooling themselves than humans in hot weather. Dogs and cats can only cool their bodies by perspiring from their nose and footpads and by panting. But panting very hot air only accelerates heatstroke. Take some simple precautions. Do not leave your companion animal alone in the car. Moderately warm temperatures outside can quickly lead to deadly temperatures inside a closed car. Even with the vehicle windows left slightly open, an outside temperature of 85 degrees can cause a temperature of 102 degrees inside a vehicle within 10 minutes, and 120 degrees within half of an hour. Brain damage, heatstroke, suffocation or kidney failure can occur in a healthy dog in as few as 20 minutes. Reserve playtime for the cool of the early morning or evening, but never after a meal or when the weather is humid. Don't let your dog stand on hot asphalt. Paw pads can easily blister and burn. Keep walks during these times to a minimum. If possible, keep your dog or cat inside during the heat of the day to rest in a cool part of the house. Areas with tile floors are generally the coolest. Provide plenty of fresh water for all of your animals and move beds to shady areas, both indoors and out. Be especially sensitive to senior and overweight cats and dogs in hot weather. Don't shave your companion animals thinking that it will keep them cooler. Their fur protects them against sunburn and helps prevent overheating. Protect against sunburn by rubbing hypoallergenic sunscreen on sensitive areas like the belly a n d e a r t i p s . Light colored noses or ears are especially susceptible to sunburn and skin cancer. Do not apply any sunscreen to your companion animal that is not labeled specifically for use on animals. Be aware of the signs of heat stress which include heavy panting, glazed eyes, rapid pulse, unsteadiness, staggering gait, vomiting or a deep red or purple tongue. If you do notice signs of heat stress, immediately: Lower your companion animal's body temperature by moving the animal to the shade and applying cool (not cold) water over its body to gradually lower body temperature. Apply ice packs or cold towels only to a companion animal's head, neck and chest or have companion animals drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes. This is a medical emergency, take your companion animal to a veterinarian as soon as possible.
