Stone, LIF Executive Director Lions Candy Day Matters This year’s Candy Day may be the most important in recent memory. If our clubs are successful, it will clearly signal a renewal in Illinois Lionism and serve as a dramatic refutation to the pundits of doom who assert that the precipitous decline in our numbers conclusively demonstrates an unwillingness of the members to participate in the eradication of the twin scourges of blindness and deafness to which Keller so eloquently sounded the clarion call to combat. It is my greatest hope that the ranks of that righteous army of “true believers” who face the clear truth that they may well represent man’s best and last chance to demonstrate the extent human inclination for good will grow.* I pray that each of you will join the small battalion of Lions who have determined to give the last full measure of devotion to goodness and service. Candy Day was originally proclaimed to be a $3,000,000 dream and I sincerely believe that it still could be if every Lion could be made to understand that there are real people (children and adults) who are dependent upon the Lions for the improvement in the quality of their lives. I weep when confronted by complacency or the willingness to accept the conditions which deprive some of god’s children from full participation in the blessings of life. Mediocrity and complacency in the face of deprivation should be more abhorrent than our own demise. Throughout Illinois, I am told the vast numbers of our Lions find it impossible or inconvenient to participate in Candy Day. Our blessed foundation is not reduced nor negatively affected by our refusal to participate; it is rather the small frail children and the vulnerable adults that depend upon our strength who will pay the price for the pundit’s wisdom. (The criteria for this award is listed in the Policy Guidelines.) All nominees should have demonstrated a strong commitment to the LIF by providing service or having taken an action to promote the Foundation and the people of Illinois. Such commitment must have occurred within the Trustee’s two-year term as they nominate candidates. A board of five Lions, known only to the LIF Executive Director, which change yearly, make the final selection . This award is to celebrate the labors and commitment of a Lion or Lioness that may not be recognized by most awards. However, their labors make a significant contribution to the daily ability to provide services &programs both on the local level and into the future. It is with great pride the we present the LIF Distinguished Service Award recipients: PFP DICK BARK, PDG LORI BENNETT CLELL “DOC” BREWER * PFP BOB BROWN, PDG * ED CARTER, PDG JERRY CLEMENS IRV COLLINS FRANK CRAMER, PDG BOB DePAOLO, PDG BEN DODGE, PDG STEVIE DuPRIEST PFP GEORGE DURBIN, PDG RICHARD EBERHARDT STEVE FERGUSON RON FLOOD * MARTHA GARLOCK RICHARD GORDON JIM GRAVES JOHN GREENER, PDG * CHARLES "CHARLIE" GREWE BOB GUSTAFSON TAWNY HALL ANGELA HANSON MARTHA HARPST TOM HARPST PRISCILLA HEDRICK JOE HENDEL, PDG FRANCIS "SNAP" HORNUNG JOHN HOVE RAY JACHIM ROBERT JILKE, PDG PATTY JORDAN ED KALLBRIER JOHN LANDON, PDG WILLIAM LEISHER, PDG STEVE LITCHFIELD GLENN LONG CHRIS LUTTRELL RON MALY JOHN McCANN, PDG CAROL McCANN-KOJIMA, PDG JAMES A. Page 5 Lions Share Honor your friends or family and help in the “battle against vision and hearing loss” The LIF has a wide variety of honors and awards that can be given to family, friends, club members, and/or private citizens who have shown their support of the Lions quest to eliminate blindness and assist those with vision & hearing loss. Please consider recognizing those special people with one, or more, of the following distinctions. Tree of Service - The Tree of Service is a monument to the never never--ending labors of Lionism‘s visual & hearing charity in Illinois. A majestic brass & acrylic interpretation of a living tree, the trunk is comprised of a bas bas--relief depiction of the programs and services that reach out to every community in Illinois to aid the visually & hearing impaired. At a glance one can see Camp Lions deaf and blind youth campers, optometrists providing eye screenings for glasses, a man being screened for a hearing aid, a Lion with a candy roll in hand, even the smiling face of a member pledging the Lions to be a “Knights in the battle against Blindness”. The canopy of the tree is a dazzling array of leaves of brass & acrylic engraved with the names family, friends, business supporters, and private citizens whose financial support allow the umbrella of the LIF services to continue to protect those in need. Each leaf, emblazoned with your special message, is available for a donation of $1,000 or a cluster of three for $3,000. A “rock”, which provides the base of the Tree, begins at $5,000. Larger rocks are available; size dependent on the amount donated. Foundation Fellow - The Foundation Fellow is the greatest level of recognition that can be bestowed by the Lions of Illinois Foundation and can honor anyone, Lion or non non--Lion, for any purpose; usually for work associated with the goal of the LIF’s mission to serve the hearing and visually impaired. This act could be in cooperati tio on of a local program or broader LIF service which reaches into communiti tiees statewide. A pin and plaque are presented to the honoree with every $500 donation. The name of the Foundation Fellow is engraved on the Lions of Illinois Foundation Wall of Honor upon receiving the first level. What a wonderful way to acknowledge a member or community supporter for their dedication. Sustaining Supporter - A Sustaining Supporter may be anyone, Lion or not, for whom is made a minimum pledge $25 (or more) on an annual schedule. The donation entitles the Sustaining Supporter to receive a pin (or numbered tag for consecutive years). The Sustaining Supporter is convertible to an LIF Foundation Fellow upon reaching a $500 level. Honorariums - Donations may be made to honor a person, special occasion (such as an anniversary, birthday, life achievement), or simply to wish someone well or thank them for their helping hand. The person named will receive a letter to inform them the honorariums has been submitted in their honor. Truly, a heart heart--felt gift made in one’s name which will improve a child or adult’s quality of life, what better honor is there? All donations to the LIF & LIEF are tax tax--free. The principle being retained in the Lions of Illinois Foundation Endowment Fund with only the interest used for program and services. This allows the principle to grow to be able to aid in the cost of hearing & vision services far into the future. For more information, & forms, on all of the donation programs/honors discussed above are available on the LIF website www.lionsofillinoisfoundation.org or by calling 1 1--800 800--955 955--5466. Our Walks allow Lions to raise money for the Foundation they created, own, and operate on behalf of the visually & hearing impaired people of Illinois. Just as important, Lions can be true heroes in their communities by recruiting other organizations to help us with our causes. LIONS, if there are organizations in your communities who will help your Foundation provide programs and services to the visually and hearing impaired, we will divide the funds they raise so that they can fund their respective causes. The net result of these cooperative partnerships is the improvement of the towns in which we reside. Furthermore, Lions will truly make a positive impact on the people of their communities. Lions need visibility and our Walks for Sight can make that happen. I hope every Lion will consider walking and raising funds on behalf of the precious children & adults we serve. I also hope that every Lion will ask their churches, their high school organizations (one high school girls’ softball team raised $1,000 for themselves by helping Lions raise money for our cause), other civic organizations, food pantry volunteers, etc. to help us with our cause and earn money for their cause. The expenses of the Walks are paid by the Lions, not participating groups & organizations. If any Lion who reads this has questions, please call, Dianne Ortega, or contact your LIF Trustees. I hope we will all walk together for our Foundation & for our communities. If Lionism is to survive & flourish Lions will need to make our presence known throughout our communities by showing our personal dedication to the causes for which Lions are most known: blindness, deafness, & the viability of the towns we live in. Many of our Lions Clubs are invisible. They do great work helping others, but very few witness the Lions and their dedication. This is your Club’s chance to be seen and remembered for the good works you do for the blind and visually impaired. And, equally as important, to be recognized for uniting with local non-profits to bring vital services to the community where you live. Watch for info on the results of all of the “Walk for Sight” events in the next issue of the Lions Share. Lions Share Page 10 Lions Share Page 11 Camp Season Ends Camp Lions successfully hosted over 200 campers between our adult and youth programs. Now with sites in Ingleside, East Bay/Hudson, & Benton our camps have taken on a refreshed spirit and look. Campers & Lions can look for forms and schedules for 2013 sometime in December. Clubs who “adopted” campers will be receiving their thank-you cards, all hand-made with lots of love, shortly. Lion Laimutis “Limy” Nargelensa of the Springfield Noon Lions Club again this year is sponsoring a camper for Camp Lions. Through his generosity a visually or hearing impaired child will be able to attend a Youth Camp. In recognition, Lion Jim Weiss, President of the Lions of Illinois Endowment Fund, presented Lion Nargelensa with a Lions of Illinois Foundation “Foundation Fellow”. Trustees of your Foundation have the ability to honor Lions in their District by recommending deserving Lions for the award. Because of his continued support for Camp Lions Lion “Limy” was an excellent candidate. We are Blessed…. Camp Lions is blessed to have Lions, Lioness, and Leo donors that sponsor campers every year. This generosity is the financial backbone which permits Camp Lions to open it’s gates. Over the years in excess of 18,000 campers have been sponsored to attend our one-of-a kind program completely free of charge. Not many organizations can make that claim. Camp Lions is a result of the Lions members who recognized that many Blind/Low vision and or Deaf/Hard of hearing kids were not getting that same chance to discover their personal strengths and develop new social skills that these retreats to nature can provide. Thus the birth of Camp Lions of Illinois in 1957. As a place of equal opportunity for Blind & Deaf youth , Camp Lions gave them the same positive experiences & memories as the so-called “normal” child’s summer camp. Lions supporting this program should be proud of what they have attained; an award winning summer program that is not found anywhere else in the Midwest. Camp Lions now boast a third of the camp staff who are past Camp Lions youth. Having graduated into the world as positive role models, they now serve this generation and bring their vision of Camp Lions to today’s youth. Thank you Lions, for each child /adult sponsored and the memories and joy you have given to them. Lions of Illinois Foundation 2814 DeKalb Avenue Sycamore, IL 60178-3117 NONPROFIT PRSRT. STD. U. S.
