It begs the question – am I a growing person? It invites our broader community to wonder- are we growing? In quality and maturity … even as new residents, homes, and developments are added to Strathmore. In the last several weeks, here are some areas of “growth” I’ve observed in our community. I’ve seen significant expressions of generosity, care, and concern expressed towards neighbours. I’ve seen gift cards and food shared, support offered, a deck built, resources donated. In the spirit of family and Thanksgiving, I’ve seen the lines of family blurred to hospitably include and adopt those without family into significant times of celebration, encouragement and fun. I’ve also witnessed a willingness to pursue difficult conversations that expand and confront long held perspectives, preconceived ideas, and generational bias. This kind of growth is not easy. It flies in the face of personal comfort, selfishness, fears and anxiet- BOW RIVER ALLIANCE CHURCH 105 Main St. Carseland 403-934-9337 office@bowriveralliance.com Sunday Worship: 10:30 am www.bowriveralliance.com RCCG PECULIAR PEOPLE ASSEMBLY (1 PET. 2:9) 115A – 3rd Avenue, Strathmore 403-667-7832 Pastor: Dunmoye Lawal Sunday Worship: 10:30 am Thursday Bible Study: 7 pm Friday (Prayer Meeting): 7 pm www.rccgstrathmore.com STRATHMORE FULL GOSPEL CHURCH 50 Maplewood Drive • 403-934-2225 Senior Pastor: Rev. These ordinary real-time expressions of growth confront established individual and corporate patterns of brokenness, institutionalism, racism, traditionalism- and often make us uncomfortable. But, I believe this kind of growth is a gift that we offer one another in order to be and become a more gracious, whole, healthy, and vibrant community. To follow the lead of the title of this weekly column, followers of Jesus may be familiar with his words in the Sermon on the Mount - “you are the salt of the earth … you are the light of the world.” This bold proclamation is made even bolder if we are able to receive it. He’s actually inviting his listeners to proclaim, “I am the salt of the earth … I am the light of the world.” To proclaim (read live) this message with integrity invites and demands that I (and we) grow. I believe this is the best kind of growth, because like Nouwen, I believe that this kind of growth is the greatest gift we can offer our family, our neighbours, our co-workers, our community, province, nation and world. Doug Taylor Photos Kings split weekend games JUSTIN SEWARD Time Reporter The Wheatland Kings performance from one weekend to the next is as different as night and day. After going 0-3 the previous week, the local junior-B team defeated the Stettler Lightning 5-4 on the road on Oct. 17, before letting a 2-0 lead slip the following night in a 4-2 loss to Red Deer on home ice. Kings forward Jay Manning thought the loss was a tough one to swallow, but said it’s a matter of the team bearing down on their chances to put teams away. “We kind of let up in the third and they advanced on us,” said Manning. “I mean we got to learn from our mistakes and put that one behind us. We’ll come out next game and play better, more stronger.” Manning thought they had a strong start to the game but felt they got too confident with the lead, where the Vipers were able to capitalize on their opportunities. Coach Emilio Fouco did not fault the team’s compete level in the two games but said it’s just a matter of knowing how to finish games when having the lead. “We played fairly well,” said Fouco. “We have a team that’s young and gelling and just needs to learn how to win those games. It was really a point of we didn’t take advantage of all our opportunities and they buried theirs.” Fouco added that the game in Stettler was a case of just sticking with it and working hard while taking advantage of opportunities that the Lightning gave them. Chris Williams scored two goals to lead the way, while Jacen Bracko, Brooker Pretty Youngman and Lucas Jones sniped one each in the win. Pretty Youngman and rookie Colton Piercey scored in the loss to the Vipers. The Kings will play three games in three days this weekend, beginning in Medicine Hat on Oct. 23 at 8:15 p.m. They will host Mountainview on Oct. 24 (8 p.m.), and wrap up the weekend in Airdrie on Oct. 25 (3 p.m.). halloween scramble Sunday, October 25th 11am Shotgun Mem $75 Non Mem $99 Includes: Power Cart, Driving Range, 18 Holes, Meal & Prizes.
