Book Group - Monday, 18th May 6pm
We had another
well-attended
and
th
enjoyable meeting on Monday 20 April at
Flanagans. This month (April) there was
not a specific book to discuss, the evening
was open to everyone who came to tell us
about what they had been reading outside
the group
and brought
some very
stimulating and enticing reads. Since we
were fourteen people and the acoustics in
the room were not perfect, it was hard to
make a complete list of all the books
discussed, and I am just going to name a
few. Those who came, please bring some
of your books along to the next choice
evening, which we will have in May.
We had books of all descriptions, fiction
and non-fiction plus faction. One coffeetable book was highly recommended "The
history of the World in a Hundred Objects"
which is a publication
of the British
Museum IBBC and was an acclaimed 100
part radio series by Neil McGregor. In a
similar vein another
member
talked
about "The sale of the King's goods" by
Brotton, which is the story of the art
collection of Charles I after his execution.
There were also a few historical novels,
one murder mystery set in Tudor times," "Dissolution"
by
Sansom,
"The
Miniaturist" by Jessie Burton, set in 17th
century Amsterdam, "A Taste of sorrow"
by Jude Morgan which is a biography of
the Bronte family in novel forrn., "The
Secret River" by Kate Grenville, about the
early settlers in Australia. There were
classics, like "Under the Greenwood Tree"
by Thomas
Hardy
and "Crime and
Punishment" by Fyodor Dostoyevski and
other interesting modern novels like "A
Tale for the time being" by Ruth Ozeki,
binding Japan and British Columbia, and
the sensually written atmospheric "Letters

few of the many books were learned about.
Our next meeting will be held at Flanagan's
on May 18th, before 7pm for fish and chips,
and hopefully the service will be back to its
normal efficiency as this week was a little
problematic
with some of us waiting 45
minutes, and myself having to take time out
to chomp when we had already started the
meeting in desperation
at 7:45pm! Never
mind, we all enjoyed ourselves as usual.
The next book "The Goldfinch" which I started
yesterday promises to be challenging if not
daunting by the sheer bulk of it! We shall see,
and meet in a month's time to discuss it.
Then in June we will be reading Diana
Mosley's Autobiography "A Life of Contrasts"
Until then

Important and Helpful Information
Holidaymakers with a UK Drivers
Licence face troubles hiring cars
abroad.
As the DVLA abolishes the paper licence,
holidaymakers face troubles hiring cars abroad
The Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency is
ditching the paper part, which accompanies the
plastic photo card licence.
The DVLA says it cuts down on red tape but
experts are warning of potential chaos saying
most people are "unaware" of the changes,
which they have dubbed "muddled".
From June 8, holidaymakers travelling abroad
will have to log on to the DVLA website the day
before go abroad, punch in their driving licence
number
and national
insurance
number.
This will generate a special code, which they
must give to their car hire company when they
arrive at the care hire desk.
Experts believe some people could be turned
away, as many car hire companies insist on
examining the paper part of the licence to
check
on
penalty
points
or
bans.
A further complication is that the special code is
only valid for 72 hours, which means that those
holidaymakers
wanting to hire a car during
their holiday might have to find an internet cafe
abroad to a generate a pass code.
10
Should holidaymakers fail to produce the
online code, the car hire firm could call the
DVLA's premium rate line to check the
driver's status.
Mark Bower, managing director of car hire
insurance website MoneyMaxim.co.uk
fears there could be chaos this summer.
I spoke to one big car hire firm in Portugal
this week and they knew nothing of the
changes to UK licences.
Mr. Bower said: "Most people are simply
unaware that these changes are on the
way - and it is not just renters.
"Six weeks away from implementation the
whole thing is very muddled. It's another
think you have to remember to do just
before departure."
Mr. Bower believes that unscrupulous
companies
could use the changes to
persuade
people
to pay for extra
insurance.
The DVLA, which is advising drives to
destroy the paper part of their licence,
insist
the change
has been
widely
publicised.
It insists that system, called Share Driving
Licence, would be fully running by June 8.
A spokesman for the DVLA said: "There is
up-to-date information on the website and
we are working closely with the industry
to ensure that their systems and processes
are ready for the changes."
AVIS said it was currently working with
the DVLA to "find a solution that will allow
our customers
to have their licence
checked with minimal disruption".
From June 8, the paper counterpart of the
licence will be invalid and should be
destroyed. However, drivers with paper
driving licences issued prior to 1998 can
continue to use them.

Joke of the month
A Fiat 500 pulled alongside a Rolls-Royce at
a traffic light. "Do you have a car phone?"
asked the driver of the Fiat. "Of course I
do," replied the Rolls-Royce car driver.
"Well, do you have a fax machine?" The
driver of the Rolls sighed, "I have that too."
"Then do you have a double bed in the
boot?" the Fiat driver wanted to know.
Embarrassed, the Rolls driver sped off. That
afternoon, he ordered a mechanic to install
a double bed in the boot. A week later the
Rolls driver passed the same Fiat 500
parked on the side of the road with the
back windows fogged up and steam
pouring out. The arrogant driver pulls
over, gets out of the Rolls, and bangs on
the Fiat's back window until the driver
sticks his head out. "I wanted to tell you
I have a double bed installed," says the
proud Rolls driver. The Fiat driver is
unimpressed, "You got me out of the
shower to tell me that?!"
