Secondary! For our returning students
– grads of 2014! – this is your last year
in public education. I encourage you to
come to your final year with
determination,
focus,
and
commitment. I am very much looking
forward to seeing all of you and I
invite you to talk to me about any
concerns and/or praise you may wish
to express in relation to your studies
and your extracurricular involvement.
To our new grade 8’s, also known as
the grads of 2018, I extend a warm
welcome to you all. It is our hope that
you will view South Delta as your
school, where your voice will be heard
and your contributions will serve to
enhance the already excellent culture
at SDSS.
At South Delta Secondary, our mission is

There are exciting developments at
our school as, through our $10.1
million seismic upgrade, it is being
enhanced with a new Science wing
complete with a modern, up-to-date
super lab.
There are additional
enhancements occurring along with
the
seismic
upgrading:
a
reconfigured
librarybeing
rebranded
as
our
Learning
Commons-, a new roof, new
ventilation/heating
update
via
geothermal
engineering,
muchneeded natural lighting for our main
office area via sky lighting, and new
instrument storage coming for our
music room. I must mention also a
new curricular initiative for a Grade
10 cohort, Strive: a grouping of 60
students who signed up for in-place
experiential learning combining the
curricular areas of English, Science,
Math, and Physical Education. Our
teachers are tuned in to using more
strategies addressing student growth
in
self-regulation
and
socialemotional learning.
In addition,
they are continuing to learn more
about and use assessment for
learning strategies with their
students. Learning never ends for
any of us.
Again for our new Grade 8’s, our
special Fourth Annual Link Crew
Welcoming Assembly is taking place
the morning of Wednesday, August
28th from 8:30 to 11:30 am, for the
first assembly, then the second
assembly from 1:00 to 4:00pm.
The assembly is organized by Link
Leadership
teachers,
Mrs.
Macgregor, Ms. Koot, Mr. Pike, and
the 19 Grade 11 and 12 students
enrolled in the course Link Crew
Leadership. (I help, as well, on
the sidelines doing gopher work
and cheering on the wonderful new
relationships that germinate during
this welcoming assembly). The
senior students are looking forward
to introducing the new Grade 8s to
SDSS, like, where their classes will
be, pointers on meeting new
people, and some wisdom about
how to face new challenges. Our
culture here at SDSS is to help our
new members fit into the flow of
high school seamlessly and with
confidence.

Principal’s Message cont’d
of professionalism and are eager to contribute to
our phenomenal SDSS community. I welcome them
and wish them a fulfilling teaching experience here
with us. Welcome back also to Ms. J. Macintosh
returning from her maternity leave.
We wish Happy Retirement to a longtime member
of the SD school community: Mr. N. Jensen. We are
grateful to him for his dedicated service to our
school community and we all wish him health and
happiness throughout this next stage of his life.
Last minute news in June was that Ms. Holland has
taken a position at Southridge School in Surrey and
Mr. Stevenson is moving to another automotive
position in Sooke. We wish them a fond farewell
and all the best in the future.
As well as working with a highly professional and
caring teaching and support staff at SDSS, I also
look forward to working with the many committed
and hard-working parents of our school community.
Parents of our Parent Advisory Council, our School
Planning Council, and our Dry Grad Committee have
the opportunity to positively impact the tone and
direction of our school. I invite and encourage all
parents to be involved. On that note, I’m happy to
welcome Mrs. Daleth Bach again as our returning
Parent Advisory Council chairperson. She
volunteered to take on this role in anticipation of
enabling initiatives that will further support our
students and further engage a greater number of
parents in school events.
One way parents can help improve school-home
communication is to ensure that the school has your
current, correct email address. We would love to
send you email alerts about new postings to our
website like the monthly newsletter, online interim
reports, online report card availability, etc.
Please update your contact information on Parent
Connect. Those of you new to our school
community, please ensure that you have provided
your current email address on the school
registration paperwork.
The District has streamlined the annual permission
forms required for various functions like
demographic information, student emergency
release, walking field trip permission and the BC
Fruit & Veggie Program. These can be accessed on
Parent Connect.
VERY IMPORTANT: Please make sure to return to
the school the completed Summary Permission
Form included in this newsletter by Friday,
September 6, 2013. Thank you for your attention
to this important information for us at school.
This newsletter is packed full of information for the
coming school year. Please make sure to have a
thorough read and to use your home calendars to
track important dates and deadlines.

While every effort is made to design the school timetable to avoid course conflicts,
some students, because of their chosen combination of courses, will not have all
courses scheduled. The following dates/times have been put in place to address new
registrants and students with incomplete schedules. (If your son/daughter does not
have a course/study block listed next to each block (A - H) their schedule is
considered incomplete.) Please note that the times below are for new students and
students with incomplete schedules only. No course changes will be considered at
these times.

Procedure for Students Who Require a Course Change In September
Since most classes are filled to capacity, the ability to change courses will be quite difficult. Students who desire a
course change MUST fill out a Course Change Form available at the Front Office. Leave the form with the receptionist
in the Course Change Request container. Counsellors will not be able to consider changes until they have completed
registering new students and adjusting incomplete schedules.
Last date for course changes will be
September 13, 2013. Note: course changes requesting change of teacher and/or block preference will not be
considered.
International Students

Please come to South Delta Secondary for a new student orientation. There will be a school tour, English test
and fun welcome activities. Leadership students will be there to assist and meet new students. Finally, the
school will host a welcome BBQ at Centennial Beach, with games and activities. Transportation to the beach
will be provided. Homestay Families can pick-up at 6:30pm at Centennial Beach.

• Please arrive by 9am, outside the office, to meet with our International Coordinator, Sandra Adamson, for a
school tour, orientation meeting, and course programming. The orientation will end at approximately 12 noon.
• Note that any new students who do not have courses already selected should come at 8am to start the process.

School Fees
Fees are payable in a number of courses in order to cover the costs of various resources. For more information
please see the 2013/2014 School and Course Fees letter attached to the back of this newsletter. Notification of
the fees owed by your son/daughter according to the courses in which he/she is enrolled will be viewable on
Parent Connect September 18th. Please note fees are due September 23rd. Cheques (can be post-dated up
to December 13, 2013) or cash can be left at the school office. In order for your payment to be applied
correctly, please include your student’s five digit student number.
Textbooks
The school lends textbooks to students for use
during the school year.
Students are held
responsible for their textbooks and are required to
pay replacement costs for lost texts and repair
costs for damaged texts. All outstanding charges
and fees for the past school year must be paid
prior to students receiving their course schedules
and their textbooks for the 2013/2014 school
year.
Photographs
All students will have their pictures taken on
Monday, September 9th. Photos are required for
Transit ID, yearbooks, and certificates. A brochure
has been provided should students wish to purchase
picture packages. The photo package, with the
appropriate payment (payable to Artona Studios),
should be presented to the photographer when
photos are taken. Appropriate attire is required for
photographs and hats are not to be worn. Students
will be accompanied by their classroom teacher.
Retakes are scheduled for the morning of Monday,
October 7th at 8:30am.
Reporting Student Absence
To report a student absence, please contact the
school office as early as possible on the day of the
absence to allow a Parent Advised code to be
entered into the system. Any unreported absences
will result in an automated call-out from the
student system, which will call the home phone
number by default. If you would like an alternate
number to be used for any absence calls, such as a
cell phone number, please contact Mrs. Huntington
in the school office. Students must also provide
teachers with a note from a parent to explain their
absence. Notes can be written in the Agenda book.
Student Agendas
Each student will be offered a Student Agenda
during the first week of school.
The Agenda
contains a calendar of events for the 2013/2014
school year as well as a daily planning calendar that
students are encouraged to use to record
homework,
assignments,
and
test
dates.
Replacement cost for lost agenda books is $10.00.

Locker Assignments
School Busing 2013/2014
Due to the construction project on the science floor, the
school will not have access to nearly 400 lockers for most
of the year. As a result, SDSS will be short many lockers
next year. In the past years, there is a trend for many
students to not use their assigned locker and travel
around school with their back pack. There is no definitive
grade that does this more than others, so to make things
fair for all grades, block A classes will continue to assign
lockers. Each class will get around 15-20 lockers,
students will be asked to share with someone in their A
block class. Students who do not want a locker will not
sign up for one, those who do need to, prepare to share
lockers. Students will not share the half lockers we
already have near the English/Socials and Math hall. We
thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation
with the change to locker assignments. We will not be
able to grant full lockers to students who have long
boards, play sports, and/or musical instruments.
Students will have to make alternate arrangements with
their coach/teacher. There will be no change to locker
use in the PE change rooms. Students are expected to
bring their own lock to class, lock up their belongings and
then remove the items and lock at the end of class. PE
lockers are for PE class use only. If you have any
questions about lockers, please contact Mr. Johnstone.
Due to District budget cuts busing will only be
available to students attending special needs classes.
Students residing in Boundary Bay who are not
attending special needs classes must make alternate
transportation arrangements.
Cafeteria
There will be no cafeteria services available during
the first week of school and limited services during
the week of September 9th. Regular service will
commence the following week.
Freedom of Information and
Protection of Privacy
There will be occasions when the school and/or the
Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) would like to
contact parents to communicate information about
important events. Unless we are contacted prior
to September 3th, 2013, your name, address,
email and phone number will be made available to
our PAC, or other school related committees
responsible for organizing school related
activities.
No personal information is made
available for business or commercial purposes or to
the general public.
Parking and Pick Up/Drop off Areas

With nearly 1,400 students and staff coming to South Delta Secondary School every day, the traffic
before 8:30am and after 2:50pm is quite congested. This is usual for most schools, both
.
elementary and secondary schools. This past year, there were many near misses in traffic
accidents as well as near misses involving students and staff being hit by a car.
To ensure the safety of all when traffic is busy, please use the designated areas when dropping off
or picking up your son/daughter from SDSS. The preferred place to pick up or drop off students
is the parking lot off of 8A Avenue. It is not the closest to the school, but the lot has the most
area to ensure everyone is safe. We are having some lines repainted and some arrows put in the parking lot to
encourage proper traffic flow.
Please do not enter the staff parking lot. The staff lot was where we had most of the near misses involving parents
dropping off students in the morning.
To support our SDSS Green Team initiatives please have your son/daughter walk, bike, or board to school and if you
have to pick them up, turn your car off - SDSS is an idle free zone!
Happy safe driving!
To commemorate the 33rd anniversary of the Terry Fox Run, all SDSS students will be
participating in a run/walk around Tsawwassen on Friday, September 27th. Students will be
asked to donate a loonie to support cancer research. Pledge forms will be available in the first
week of school for students who are interested in raising additional funds.

The Aboriginal Program at SDSS
The Aboriginal Educational Program assists Aboriginal students (Metis, First Nation, Inuit, “Indian” Status, Non Status,
including any portion of ancestry) achieve greater success in school. This is accomplished by providing Aboriginal
Support Workers along with Aboriginal community members, who are familiar with and sensitive to the values,
beliefs, and needs of the Aboriginal community. It is this cultural sensitivity and awareness that acts as a bridge
between the two cultures, necessary in assisting Aboriginal students maintain academic success. By raising cultural
issues, a bridge can be built to assist Aboriginal students in being successful participants in school. Registration forms
are available at the office. Students who sign up for this program will be ‘pulled’ from their regular classes to attend
these sessions.
Student Accident Insurance

accident insurance.

The District would like to draw your attention to Optional Student
Accident Insurance that is again available to all students registered
with the Delta School District. This insurance is inexpensive and
provides three different plan options.
Parents are reminded that the District’s insurance coverage does not
include coverage for students who have been injured in an accident.
Please take a moment to determine if the insurance offered by IAP
Kids Plus Accident Insurance meets the needs of your family.

Success in Secondary School

Parents often ask us about what makes a difference to a student’s performance at school. The truth is that by the
time a student is at the secondary level, parents should begin reaping the fruits of their earlier efforts with their
children throughout their years in primary and elementary school.
It is important to discuss everything about school with your son and daughter. Even give them advice, whether or not
they ask for it. But stress that success or failure is their affair. Don’t take all the credit for their success, and refuse
to take the blame for their failures.
Success at school usually results from good work and attendance habits. The school will inform parents of
attendance and progress, but the focus is on requiring that the student accept responsibility for his or her own
attendance and work habits. At the end of the year, the student who has worked well will be rewarded with a
strong sense of self-confidence and good grades; the student who has attended irregularly may well fail courses.
If your son or daughter misses classes, please phone the school to explain the absence. You should also write a note
explaining the absence for the student to show to teachers. What definitely doesn’t work is enabling the student’s
absence by providing false excuses. In the long run, such an approach is sure to backfire.
Planning is also very important, whether ensuring that the course of studies chosen will lead to graduation and the
appropriate qualifications for a chosen career path, or whether the courses chosen are the ones suited to the
student’s more immediate needs. Grade 12 students have to be aware of the deadlines and necessary qualifications
for post-secondary institutions, and also the procedures for applying for the many scholarships that are available.
But, planning and working towards a successful high school experience begins right away in Grade 8.
As a cohesive team of teachers, counsellors, education assistants, and administration- we do all we can to help
students and their families render these days, weeks, and months an engaging and enjoyable journey. It’s a
partnership amongst we three participants: families, students, and educators.

Grade 8 Orientation Parent Volunteers
Thank you to all the parents who have helped us so far and who have signed up to help with the events in
September. To date, we have nearly 100 parents involved in some way! If you did not sign up to help and would
like to be involved, contact Bill Westerberg at billw@telus.net. This is a great opportunity for you to be involved in
the school, meet the staff and get to know other Grade 8 parents.

annual two-day program is a fun-filled team building event, which brings together our new grade eights, teachers,
and parent volunteers.
Our annual Grade 8 Orientation aims to accomplish three objectives:
1. To provide a comforting and constructive bridge between grade seven and eight.
2. To assist the grade eights in understanding our shared expectations for all students and staff.
3. To give our new students an orientation to the resources and activities available to them at the school.

Connect. Teachers will be using Parent Connect to post course assignments throughout the school year.

Meet the Teacher Event: Thursday, September 19, 2013, 6:30 PM
We are pleased to invite parents to South Delta Secondary School’s “Meet the
Teacher Night” on the evening of Thursday, September 19th starting at 6:30pm.
At this time parents will have an opportunity to meet their child’s teachers to gain a
sense of the curriculum, assessment procedures and activities in each of their
courses. This is an excellent chance for parents to learn something about what’s
being taught, how it’s being taught and how it’s being evaluated, and also to get a
sense of who that person is who’s working with your child for 100 plus hours
throughout the school year!
Please note, that this will not be the time for parents to talk about their individual
child with the teacher.
The evening will begin in the theatre with Mme Gaudreault’s brief welcome. Student representatives from a
variety of SD’s student service groups and clubs will inform the audience about volunteer and fun extra-curricular
opportunities for our students.
After this, parents will then follow their child’s Day 1 and Day 2 schedule, spending 8 minutes in the classroom of
each of their child’s teachers, with a 4 minute break to move between each class. Student volunteers will be
available to assist parents in finding their way to the classrooms. At approximately 8:15pm parents will return to
the theatre for a demonstration of how to log in to Parent Connect, an important tool with which parents can track
their child’s assignment completion. The evening will end at approximately 8:30pm.
We encourage all parents to be a part of this evening to help ensure you have a working knowledge of what lies
ahead for your children.
Appropriate Dress for School

SDSS recognizes the importance of teenage clothing styles. Nevertheless, increasingly,
students are not considering the appropriateness of the attire they wear to school.
During the warm weather in particular, girls and boys alike come to school wearing
clothing that is too revealing and informal. The girls are choosing tops that expose a
significant amount of their upper chest as well as very short shorts that ride up very
high on their legs both in the front and the back. The boys are choosing to wear
muscle shirts and low riding shorts, clothing that is suited for the beach, not for
school. When students wear this revealing clothing, the faculty and staff at SDSS are
finding it very uncomfortable to work around them. I know that many students as well
are uncomfortable being around their peers who are wearing revealing clothing.
Delta School District, as the employer, is obligated to provide a safe and comfortable work environment for all its
employees. I have been hesitant to bring this topic up in a general address to our parent community, but the
wellbeing and comfort of our teaching staff and support staff is my responsibility as the representative of our
employer. I am seeking the assistance of you, our parent/guardian community, to speak with your children about
the necessity of wearing work-appropriate clothing to school: clothing that does not reveal cleavage, midriffs or bra
straps; clothing that covers all of the upper legs to mid-thigh; no gaping muscle shirts that reveal armpits; in short,
clothing that a young person would wear to an interview for a job in an office, pharmacy, grocery store, restaurant,
or coffee shop.
In conclusion, I thank you in advance for helping to teach your child what kind of clothing is appropriate for the
work/school setting. If you wish further clarification of this matter, please contact the school at 604-943-7407.

Protocol for Parent Concerns at South Delta Secondary
If parents have concerns about general school procedures or issues stemming from their child’s classroom, there is
a procedure for raising those concerns.
If the concerns originate in the classroom, the first and most important person to communicate those issues with is
your child’s teacher with a phone call, email, or with making an appointment to meet with the teacher. If in this
discussion you continue to have unresolved concerns then it is appropriate to be in contact with your child’s
counsellor.
If your concern is not addressed to your satisfaction after the counsellor has intervened, then please come directly
to the vice-principal of your child’s grade. If there is still an outstanding concern, contact the principal.
We are always willing to speak with parents to explain how and why particular decisions have been made and to
listen openly to suggestions that might make our school community a better place. We will do our best to work
along with you to solve problems.
We want South Delta to be a community that supports children’s learning and nurtures the hearts of children and
families. To maintain a positive working relationship, please follow the protocol as outlined when difficulties
arise. Sharing difficulties in more round about ways (eg. classroom e-mail lists, social media sites that are public
forums or have open pages, or playground discussions, etc.) in isolation of school staff does not support a positive
school community and in fact leads to misinformation and hard feelings.

Extended Absences

The purpose of this article is to explain our School’s and School District’s position regarding extended absences from
school for other than medical reasons. These absences occur when parents decide to remove students from school
for extended vacations or other family matters.
Schools are not in a position to grant or deny permission to any student to leave school early for family holidays.
That decision is the parent’s responsibility, however, possible consequences from such a decision should be
considered. First, important work is missed during any absence, and all absent students are at a disadvantage
compared to those in regular attendance. Providing work for the student to complete while on an extended holiday
is for the most part an ineffective substitute for attending classes. Therefore, there can be no guarantees regarding
the student’s progress and final standing. Tutoring may be necessary to allow the student to catch up with work that
has been missed. Parents would be responsible for the arrangement and cost of such tutoring.
Second, if the absence is extended beyond one month, or if the return date is not certain, the student’s place in the
class or school may be lost. The district endeavours to provide an appropriate educational program for students, but
can determine where that will take place. It is important to recognize that the first priority for a teacher is to help
those students who are in regular attendance. Teachers are not obliged to provide homework in advance for
students to take with them on vacation.
In conclusion, I would like to add that students are expected to make a sincere effort to catch up on work missed for
any reason. If you wish further clarification of this matter, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Guidelines For Student Illness At School
School is a place where students come to actively participate in learning, to engage in physical activities and to
socialize. In the course of the school year, children often become ill and then parents must make a decision as to
whether their child can or should attend school. The following are some guidelines in determining when a child
should not be at school:

If your child is developing an acute cold or influenza with fever, runny nose and/or eyes, and sore throat
If your child has a persistent cough
If your child has a fever over 38 degrees centigrade (100 degrees Fahrenheit)
If your child has diarrhea or vomiting
If your child has a communicable disease, eg. Chicken pox, measles, rubella, mumps. If your child
contracts a communicable disease, please notify the school so that other families can be alerted.
Children who have a fever, vomiting or diarrhea should be free of these symptoms for 24 hours before returning
to school.
Seismic Upgrade at SDSS

As you are likely aware, South Delta Secondary School will be undergoing some very exciting renovations and seismic
upgrades. We are thrilled about this project as it will not only enhance the safety of the building in the event of an
earthquake, but will also improve the workability of many school departments and enrich the aesthetics of the
school. Work will begin on July 2, 2013 and the target completion date for the entire project is October 31, 2014.
The seismic upgrade to SDSS is a very important project because it will enhance student safety by further augmenting
the structural integrity of the building in the event of an earthquake. There will be a structural seismic resistance
upgrade to three areas of the school: the two-storey Classroom/Science/Library Block, the single-storey
Classroom/Art/Administration Block, and the single-storey Woodwork/Automotive/Metalwork/Drafting Shops Block.
These three areas were all built in 1973. In addition to these structural upgrades, a non-structural seismic resistance
upgrade will be done to the entire school.
We are also incredibly excited to be getting a brand new science wing as part of this project. Consistently over the
years, students and teachers have complained about the configuration and appearance of our current 1970’s vintage
science classrooms and labs. Our new science wing will have a state-of-the-art “super lab” with more useable
classroom space. Other areas of the school will also undergo renovations to improve their functionality, including the
library. The additional renovations to the school, particularly to the science department, are important because they
will greatly increase the workability of the building, enriching the learning potential of the school. Undertaking these
renovations is possible because of the monetary savings accrued by partnering the project with the seismic upgrade.
The overall cost of the seismic upgrade and renovations will be more than $10 million; $9 Million paid for by the
provincial government and the balance invested by the Delta Board of Education from its capital reserve.
While this project is a very enthusing and important one, it will result in some disturbances to everyday life at the
school while construction is ongoing. Construction disturbances will include temporary closures of some classrooms
with these classes being held in portables. Although portables are not the best classroom setting, they will be
temporary. I will try to keep you informed of any potential disruptions as the project progresses.
The first phase of the project will occur from July 2, 2013 to October 31, 2013. It will be the seismic upgrade &
renovation to Block 4a (science floor). During this time, the floor will be temporarily closed and classes will be
relocated to portables. The floor below will have its ceilings opened-up in the rooms and corridors, which may not
be aesthetically pleasing. There could also possibly be construction noise during this phase. While living through a
period of construction is not ideal, the construction will be short-lived and the benefits resulting from the upgrades
to the building will be valuable for the entire SDSS community for years to come.

Mobile Device Lending Coming in September
We are excited to launch our new mobile device lending program. Students will be able
to borrow iPad minis and netbook computers from the library. Students wishing to
borrow these items will need to agree to an acceptable user agreement. These forms can
be found at the school library.

Students and parents have 24 hour access to our small collection of databases. These
databases provide access to valuable research materials such as encyclopedias,
academic journals, newspapers, news magazines and e-books. Students will be given
instruction for these resources when brought to the library with a classroom teacher. Otherwise, please see Ms. Doyle for help in
using these great research tools.

students to volunteer as Technology Support. Students will learn how to manage our desktop

Our NEW Library Learning Commons
Our school library is fortunate to be part of next year’s seismic upgrade.
We are still waiting to learn how these renovations will be carried out and to what degree of disruption we will
experience.
The inconvenience is temporary and we are excited to reopen as the Library Learning Commons.
A Library Learning Commons does not replace the traditional library; rather, it is an expansion of traditional services to
include digital information and creation technologies. The Library Learning Commons still has books; in fact, we still
have lots of books. However, we will be expanding our digital collection and our space to accommodate more student
groups and learning centres.
GUIDELINES TO COMPLETING GRAD TRANSITIONS - @ SOUTH DELTA SECONDARY
All students must complete the required Ministry of Education course, Graduation Transitions 12, worth four (4) credits in order
to receive the Dogwood Certification of High School Graduation from British Columbia.
For the 2013/2014 school year, all Grade 12s at SDSS are enrolled in a block (A-H or X block) to work independently on their Grad
Transitions materials. Grad transitions advisors (Ms. Bodman, Ms. Diomis, Mme Gaudreault, Ms. Hayes and Ms. Kilpatrick) will be
visiting all grade 12s in their scheduled English 12 classes to track the students’ progress. Following the timeline laid out in the
Grad Trans booklet available on our school website, Grade 12 students will have completed this required course by October 30,
2013. However, we encourage all grade 12s to work on the contents during this summer vacation with the aim of
completing it before September.
Everyone must have a half-inch binder in which to put their printed copy of the Graduation Transitions booklet and the
completed answers for each section. Everything must be typed. Photocopies of supporting documents must be included in the
binder. Using sheet protectors to contain these copies is a good idea.
Remember to collect all required signatures on the required pages (DPA, counsellor review of credits, work experience or
community service verification, parent signature page).
On September 30 and October 1, your GT advisor will be visiting classes to track your progress as Part I of the package is due on
that date. Parts II-IV are due October 11 and Part V is due October 30. Exit interviews with one of the GT advisors will take
place in November during GT blocks in the cafeteria. All grade 12s must be prepared with GT binder and be able to articulate
post-graduation plans.
Both the grad boat cruise and the grad Xmas dance ticket sales will be permitted to those students who have met the
required deadlines.
An Important Message for Students and Parents Regarding Plagiarism
The staff of South Delta Secondary School shares a concern about plagiarism in various assignments and projects that have been
handed in by students. A common misconception by students is that rewriting something is not plagiarism because they are
“putting it in their own words”; however, the majority of plagiarism is a result of text manipulation. Plagiarism, according to the
American College Dictionary is “copying or imitating the language, ideas and thoughts of another author, and passing off the same
as one's own original work.” If the source is not officially acknowledged, it is plagiarism. Plagiarism is dishonest.
The following is the policy of South Delta Secondary School concerning plagiarism:
1. Whenever students use any idea derived substantially and directly from a published work, from a fellow student, or from
any other source, they must explicitly acknowledge the nature and extent of the indebtedness.
2. Whenever students borrow three or more words, an original term, or a distinctive turn of phrase from a published work,
from a fellow student or from any other source, they must enclose the borrowed element in quotation marks and explicitly
acknowledge their indebtedness.
At the teacher's discretion, a student may receive a zero on a paper or assignment for plagiarism.

SDSS 2013/2014 SCHOOL AND COURSE FEES
No fees will be charged for regular courses or programs. However, legislation has clarified areas where school fees may
be charged. In accordance with Ministry of Education guidelines, fees will be charged in certain courses for various
activities and/or materials as outlined below:
Student Activity fees: All students will be required to pay their student fee which covers the cost of the Student Agenda
and helps with Athletics, Student Council, Assemblies, Guest Speakers, and Awards.
Grad Fee: Grade 12 students will be required to pay a Graduation Fee to help defray costs associated with the purchase
of caps, tassels and gown rental for Valedictory.
Athletics: Students playing on any school athletic team will be expected to pay a sport specific athletic fee to help offset
the cost of transportation, officials, registration, etc. Fees may vary according to the expenses incurred by the particular
sport and league.
Technical Education: No fees will be charged for any projects in Grade 8, however, in Grades 9 - 12 students will be
charged the cost of materials for any take home projects and/or where enhanced materials are selected (e.g. higher
grade of wood from the basic quality supplied by the school).
Home Economics: No fees will be charged for any projects in Grade 8 or ingredients for any Foods and Nutrition class
meals. However, in Grades 9 – 12 students will be charged the cost of fabric for any take home projects and/or where
enhanced materials are selected (e.g. student selects and purchases their own fabric). Students wishing to participate in
the optional “Gifts from the Kitchen” Christmas baking will be expected to pay for costs of the ingredients.
Art: No fees will be charged for any projects except where students choose to paint on canvas rather than paper.
Students in some courses will be expected to have a sketchbook, which are available through the school at cost.
Music: A nominal fee will be charged for the rental and use of in-house, school supplied guitars. Rental fee also includes
one set of strings and pick. Choir students have the option of purchasing a music folder at cost. A refundable choir
uniform deposit may also be collected at the beginning of the year.
Theatre/Drama: Optional excursions to Vancouver theatres to see live productions will be offered to students at cost. In
addition, students involved in major school productions will have the option of purchasing T-shirts, CD, DVD, cast and
personal photos, at cost.
Physical Education: Particularly in P.E. 11 and 12, students will have the opportunity to participate in off campus field
trips and activities at cost. Students will be given the opportunity to complete the Emergency First Aid certification at
cost. In accordance with Ministry guidelines, a fee will be charged for the Hockey Academy and Superfit.
Cook Training: In accordance with Ministry guidelines, students will be charged a nominal fee to cover supplies.
Health Science 12:
certification at cost.
Students will be given the opportunity to complete the Sport and Med. B.C. Trainers course
Work Books: No fees will be charged for any textbooks; however, in some courses students will be offered the option of
purchasing a supplemental student workbook. These books may be taken home, written in, and used at the students’
discretion. School copies of the workbook will be available to students not wishing to purchase their own, but student
must not write in them and must return them at the end of the school year in good condition. In some cases a deposit will
be collected for school supplied work books.
Field Trips: Throughout the year, in various courses, students will be invited to participate in course related field trips at
cost. Although these trips are designed to enrich students’ learning experience, participation will be optional.
It is hoped that this helps to clarify why and for which courses some fees will be charged in 2013/2014. If you have any

Student Emergency Release
In the event of an earthquake, school building fire or other serious occurrence resulting in school closure during the
school day, and you are unable to collect your child(ren) from school, you authorize the release of your child(ren) into
the custody of temporary adult guardians. The Out-of-Province contact name and telephone number would be used if
normal telephone service is disrupted, only long distance calls to areas unaffected by the disaster are possible and it is
necessary to leave a message regarding your child(ren's) condition or whereabouts.
Walking Field Trips Permission
During the school year, teachers may take students for excursions in and around our neighborhood. The teacher will
provide supervision on these neighborhood trips, with the assistance of parent volunteers, as required. When longer
trips involving travel outside our local area are planned, you will be informed in writing and will be asked to sign a
separate permission slip for each trip.
B.C. Fruit and Vegetable Program Permission (if applicable)
Our school is involved in a province-wide healthy living initiative sponsored by B.C. Agriculture in the Classroom
Foundation and ActNowBC. One of the goals is to encourage healthy eating by providing fresh B.C. fruits and
vegetables to the students during classroom time. The students will receive picked, washed, and ready to enjoy
produce every other week at no charge.

In the Delta School District we celebrate the accomplishments of our students and staff. In doing so, photographs/videos of students may be taken by staff or
media to commemorate and promote educational initiatives and events. Such photographs/videos are used for purposes such as recognizing and encouraging
student achievement, building school community, and informing others about the school district, its programs and activities. In accordance with the BC Freedom
of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, the Board of Education of School District No. 37 is seeking your consent to collect, retain, use and disclose
photographs, videos, images and/or names of students and groups of students in a variety of publications and on the School District’s website(s) for such
educational purposes.
Student names and/or images may be used in

School and School District communications, such as newsletters, brochures and reports;

School and School District websites and social media sites (e.g. Facebook pages, YouTube, Vimeo, Twitter, blogs, and other school/district social media
platforms);

External media communications such as newspaper or television photographs, videotape and/or interviews;
•
Videos, CDs, DVDs for educational use only.
Please note: school and district staff cannot control news media access, photos/videos taken by the media or by others in public locations (e.g. field trips or off
school grounds) or school events open to the public, such as sports events, student performances, school board meetings, etc. These are considered public events.

involved with outside media activities.
