The nursing vacancy rate averaged just 1% during the year, well below the statewide-average of 5.3%. In addition, patient care was enhanced by new models of collaboration and innovative technology. Mercy’s orthopedic and spine programs were named Blue Centers of Distinction. In addition, U.S. News & World Report recognized the strength of Mercy programs in cancer, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, gynecology, kidney disorders, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, and urology. Stella Maris expanded its home care services with the same reputation for excellence found in long-term care, rehabilitation, hospice, and adult day services. Investments in Technology Computerized Physician Order Entry was expanded to enhance patient care and position Mercy to access public funding for continued investments in technology. LEED Silver Certification Mercy Ridge celebrated its tenth anniversary with the announcement that it had become the first retirement community in the nation to be recognized with LEED Silver Certification from the United States Green Building Council. 5 Like the Sisters of Mercy Before Us ➤ We witness God’s healing love for all people By providing excellent clinical and residential services Within a community of compassionate care. We witness God’s healing love for all people Healing body, mind, and spirit has been the fundamental work of Mercy since six Sisters of Mercy were invited in 1874 by a group of physicians to staff what was then known as Baltimore City Hospital. Today, the Sisters of Mercy are joined by 4,468 physicians, nurses, technicians, pharmacists, chaplains, social workers, volunteers, and more. ● Mercy provided over $43 million in uncompensated ● The patients and residents served by Mercy care and community benefits last year, ranking among Medical Center and Stella Maris continue to reflect the top hospitals in Maryland. a special concern for poor and underserved persons. ● ● Mercy became the first hospital in Baltimore to offer Sister Helen Amos, RSM chairs the Leadership public banking of umbilical cord blood to support Advisory Group for The Journey Home, Baltimore stem cell research and treatment for a number of City’s 10-year plan to end homelessness. diseases, including Sickle-Cell Anemia. Led by the Center’s Director, Pioneers ➤ Like the Sisters of Mercy Before Us Sister Paula Marie Phelan, RSM In 1944, after eight years as a school teacher in Baltimore and Columbus, Georgia, Sister Paula Marie was surprised to learn that she had been appointed Laboratory Educational Director at Mercy. Confident in what she had learned from the Sisters of Mercy while earning her bachelor’s degree in science from Mount Saint Agnes College, she accepted this new challenge and went on to establish Mercy’s own Medical Technology School. After stepping down in 1992, she continued to influence Mercy’s Laboratory staff, ensuring that accuracy and efficiency remained touchstones for another generation of health care workers, including Maureen Ciesielski who joined Mercy in 1976. ➤ “Teaching and learning are a vital part of the Mercy mission. Medical students, residents, fellows, and experts in every field can be found around every corner. The focus on the science of medicine is pervasive, but it’s matched by the art and heart of healing, which is shared with everyone who comes to our doors.” Maureen Ciesielski Laboratory Quality and Compliance Officer 7 ➤ Health Care for the Homeless As a founding partner of Health Care for the Homeless, Mercy was delighted to welcome this organization to the neighborhood as its $17-million clinic and headquarters opened just two blocks from Mercy. Pictured are recently-retired Health Care for the Homeless President and CEO Jeff Singer and Sister Helen Amos, RSM. ➤ Emergency Services ➤ Mercy’s Emergency Services Department, led by Stephen M. Schenkel, M.D., recorded 62,421 visits during the year. Mercy’s downtown location provides access to health care for thousands in Baltimore who cannot find these services in their own neighborhoods. Continued Innovation at Stella Maris Stella Maris remains a recognized leader in programs and services for individuals with dementia. During the past year, staff education and development programs were implemented in response to the publication of research protocols. 8 ➤ Discovery Health’s NICU Documentary Mercy’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was prominently featured in Discovery Health’s NICU. The six-part television series showcased the physicians and nurses who care for more than 400 pre-term, low-birth weight, and seriously ill babies each year. ➤ Labor of Love More babies are born at Mercy than at any other hospital in Baltimore City. The clinical expertise and academic-medicine leadership of Robert O. Atlas, M.D., Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Susan J. Dulkerian, M.D., Director of Nurseries, are two reasons why so many women choose Mercy. ➤ Mercy in Lutherville Lutherville Personal Physicians, located at York and Ridgely Roads, is the new home to 14 primary care providers who collaborate with 46 Mercy specialists who visit the site. On-site physicians include Drs. Ayman Akkad, Lawrence Boas, John Bowie, Daniel Collector, Albert DiGerolamo, Inna Gendelsman, Gary Kerkvliet, Kenneth Kochmann, Christine Lafferman, Marc Leavy, Daniel Levy, Fredric Sirkis, and Mark Stromberg along with Nurse Practitioner Dawn Donohue. The practice of David Hartig, M.D., at 10155 York Road is affiliated with Lutherville Personal Physicians. Sister Helen Amos, RSM served as President and CEO from 1992 to 1999 and has been Executive Chair of the Board of Trustees since that time. During her tenure, the creation of Mercy’s flagship program in women’s health and medicine , led by Neil B. Rosenshein, M.D., launched the establishment of other Centers of Excellence, broadening Mercy’s reputation throughout Maryland, the Mid-Atlantic, and in some specialties, across the country. ➤ ➤ “Providing excellent clinical and residential services doesn’t just happen. It takes leadership, commitment, passion, and vision. It’s quite rare for one person to have all of these qualities in abundance, but here at Mercy, I am amazed at the number of people who do. People like Sister Helen stand at the head of the line.” Neil B. Leaders ➤ Like the Sisters of Mercy Before Us Sister Louis Mary Battle, RSM Gracious southern hospitality and a disarming charm are traits shared by quite a few Sisters of Mercy. Birmingham, Alabama native Sister Louis Mary Battle, RSM is blessed with the added qualities of innovation and motivation. As President of Stella Maris from 1969 to 1997, she developed new programs and services for seniors, transforming a traditional retirement center into a comprehensive center for senior services. During that time, and since 1997 as President Emerita, Sister Louis Mary has been equally known for serving as mentor, champion, and confidant for hundreds of employees, bringing forth loving hearts and compassionate service to the sick, the elderly, and the dying. ➤ “It’s amazing how many opportunities the Sisters provide to me and my co-workers. They encourage us to work hard for ourselves and for the residents at Stella Maris. And they truly care for us as people, and for our families. I feel that I’m a valued member of this community of compassionate care.” Michael Harrison Chef and Assistant Director of Dietetic Services, Stella Maris 15 Surgical Expertise Shared Worldwide Armando Sardi, M.D., Director of The Institute for Cancer Care, and Vadim Gushchin, Director of Gastrointestinal Oncology, are among a number of Mercy surgeons who share innovative techniques with their colleagues and people in need around the world. Dr. Sardi travels to his native Colombia each year on a medical mission that serves hundreds of people. Dr. Gushchin travels to his native Russia and has hosted Russian medical students and residents at Mercy. ➤ ➤ The Joint Journey The Joint Journey at Mercy provides orthopedic surgery patients with a specialized education and rehabilitation program which begins prior to surgery and includes intense post-surgery physical therapy and follow-up services. ➤ ➤ Humanitarian of the Year Heat It to Beat It Patients of Armando Sardi, M.D., Director of The Institute for Cancer Care, organized a walk around Baltimore’s Inner Harbor to support research and awareness for Peritoneal Carcinomatosis. Dr. Sardi and his colleague Vadim Gushchin, M.D. are among the few surgical oncologists in the world who specialize in treating this complex cancer. Heat It to Beat It raised over $100,000. 16 Albert J. Polito, M.D., Director of The Lung Center at Mercy, was recognized by the Mildred Mindell Cancer Foundation as its 2011 Humanitarian of the Year. Drs. Neil B. Rosenshein and Neil B. Friedman were honored in past years. ➤ Premier Long-Term Care ➤ The range of programs and activities available to residents of Stella Maris further distinguishes the services offered by this premier long-term care center. Nursing Week As part of Nursing Week, Mercy nurses conducted a food drive to benefit the Maryland Food Bank. ➤ Choir Power Cancer survivors and caregivers formed The Healing Power of Music Chorus and performed at a benefit concert to support cancer recovery programs at Mercy. 17 Like the Sisters of Mercy Before Us We witness God’s healing love for all people By providing excellent clinical and residential services Within a community of compassionate care. The Mary Catherine Bunting Center On December 19, 2010, The Mary Catherine Bunting Center welcomed patients with its capacity to offer 259 private patient rooms, 15 state-of-the-art operating rooms, advanced diagnostic and treatment areas, and space for new centers of excellence. ● The Mary Catherine Bunting Center was the result of the Strategic Plan approved by the Board of Trustees in 2004 calling for the development of a long-range plan for Mercy’s downtown campus. The Tower Building (now known as McAuley Plaza) was designed in the 1950s and opened in 1963. Led by Richard O. Berndt, a Special Planning Committee of the Board of Trustees determined that replacement, not renovation, was the best course of action to ensure that Mercy would remain a vibrant part of downtown Baltimore for decades to come. ● Mercy benefitted from the cooperation and support of Baltimore City, including Mayor Stephanie RawlingsBlake, City Council President Bernard “Jack” Young, City Councilman William Cole, Baltimore Development Corporation President M. J. Brodie, and many other city departments and agencies. ● The experience and strength of The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company led to the project’s completion seven months ahead of the original construction schedule. In addition, careful planning ensured that the project did not lead to a decrease in patient visits during construction. 18 ● The Building Congress and Exchange of Metropolitan Baltimore recognized excellence in design and construction with awards for brick masonry to Henry J. Knott Masonry, electrical conduit to Gill-Simpson, stone masonry to Rugo Stone, and the pneumatic tube system to Pevco Systems International. ● The Greater Baltimore Committee recognized Mercy with the Bridging the Gap Achievement Award for creating a minority business partnership and strategic alliance with The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, the Maryland Washington Minority Contractor Association, and Congressman Elijah Cummings. ● At the December 2, 2010, preview for benefactors and project partners, the Sisters of Mercy and Thomas R. Mullen recognized the following individuals with special citations and awards: Mary Catherine Bunting; Willard Hackerman and Robert W. Moore from The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company; and members of the Mercy team including Judith A. Weiland, A. Michael Baldwin, John E. Topper, Kathryn Pilkenton, Karen Fox, Kathleen Youngbar, Gary N. Michael, Margaret G. Benzinger, and Nicholas J. Koas. Builders ➤ Like the Sisters of Mercy Before Us Sister Ruth Handren, RSM Until last year, Sister Ruth Handren, RSM held the distinction of being the last Mercy leader to build an entire hospital. With a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Mount St. Agnes College and a master’s degree in social work from St. Louis University, Sister Ruth (then known as Sister Scholastica) served as Mercy’s Administrator from 1959 to 1963, leading construction of the Tower Building, now known as McAuley Plaza. This historic project is credited with playing an important role in the renaissance of downtown Baltimore. Now a resident of Mercy Villa, the Sisters of Mercy retirement center in Baltimore, Sister Ruth visited The Mary Catherine Bunting Center on December 10, 2010. “The Sisters who preceded me as either Administrator or President were visionary women of Mercy. Mercy remains an anchor of downtown Baltimore and is synonymous with excellence and compassion because of their leadership, courage, and perseverance. I’m honored to carry forward their remarkable legacy.” Thomas R. Mullen President and CEO ➤ Chapel of Light The chapel in The Bunting Center offers a welcoming space for prayer and meditation for people of all religious traditions. Prayer Breakfast ➤ Former Board Chair Honored The Board Room in The Mary Catherine Bunting Center was named in honor of P. McEvoy Cromwell who served as Chair of the Board from 1984 to 1999. The announcement was made at an event in Mr. Cromwell’s honor in November where he also received The Catherine McAuley Leadership Award. Mr. Cromwell has been a member of the Board since it was established in 1969. Religious leaders from across Baltimore gathered for a morning of prayer, music, and reflection. The keynote address was offered by Bishop Denis J. Madden, Auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore. 23 Financial Statement - July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011 Our Income This financial statement reflects the operating results for Mercy Medical Center, Stella Maris, St. Paul Place Specialists, Maryland Family Care, and the Mercy Health Foundation.
