Spring 2012 The philanthropy newsletter for donors of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System The Gift of St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor Celebrates 100 years and a $1 Million Event St. Mary Mercy Livonia Generations Together In 2011, St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor celebrated two monumental achievements – Campaign Leadesrship 6 reaching the Hospital’s 100th anniversary and surpassing the St. Joe’s Holiday Ball fundCommunity Connections Grid funded by RNR raising goal of $1 million. The 2011 Holiday Ball was led by Chair Julie Beer and Ticket & Foundation 7 Philanthropy Co-chairs Rod Beer, MD, and Charlie Crone. With gifts totaling more than St. Mary Mercy $1,056,000, it was the first SJMHS special event to reach, and exceed, the $1 million mark. Livonia Gala Review 8 St. Joseph Mercy Livingston Centennial Sponsor Anesthesia Harvest Ball Review 10 Associates of Ann Arbor made St. Joseph Mercy Saline Dinner at Eight Review 11 a gift of $100,000, leading the The Holiday Ball Tradition 14 way for the many other sponsors who made their best gifts to date in support of the event. Road to Renewal Saint Joseph Mercy Health System’s Renewal Campaign is a ten-year fund-raising effort (2002-2012) to raise $100 million in support of new facilities, programs and technology across the entire Health System. Community support for the Campaign allows us to continue our role of providing compassionate patient care using the latest advancements of modern medicine in a way that respects the dignity of all. “The generosity of our sponsors and dedication of our Holiday Ball volunteers never ceases to amaze me,” said Camille B. Shy, SJMHS Vice President for Development. “We are absolutely thrilled to have surpassed our $1 million goal, Sister Yvonne Gellise, SJMHS Senior Advisor for Governance; Julie Beer, 2011 Holiday Ball Chair; and Rob Casalou, President & CEO of but moreover, we are thankful to those who made it possible by St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor, Saline and Livingston serving as champions for St. Joe’s through their generosity and commitment.” Dr. Beer says it did not take much effort for his partners at Anesthesia Associates of Ann Arbor to jump on board in support of St. Joe’s Holiday Ball. “I sent one email to my colleagues asking if they would commit to securing the Centennial Anniversary sponsorship level, and the resounding answer was ‘yes.’ Within minutes I had a response in support of this effort. I was overwhelmed,” recalls Beer. The sold-out Holiday Ball with the theme, The Black & White Ball, The Party for St. Joe’s Century, took place on December 3 at Eastern Michigan University Convocation Center. PAGE 2 | 3 The Gift of Health St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor Celebrates 100 years and a $1 Million Event (Continued from front page) The event hosted more than 970 community members, physicians, and SJMHS staff. Gifts will support the construction of the new Outpatient Surgery Center on the Hospital’s campus. “I am truly humbled and delighted by the support for this year’s Holiday Ball,” said Julie Beer, 2011 St. Joe’s Holiday Ball Chair. “It warms my heart to imagine how the event will benefit patients and families. For so many, the Holiday Ball is our way to give back to St. Joe’s for all that the Hospital and the wonderful doctors and staff do for our community.” 2011 marked the 36th annual St. Joe’s Holiday Ball, which counts its five most financially successful years between 2007 and 2011 at a time when philanthropic giving decreased both locally and nationally due to the economic recession. Since beginning in 1976, the event has raised $15.6 million and supported vital health services and capital projects throughout St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Major construction projects on St. Joe’s campus that have benefited from the event include the Robert H. and Judy Dow Alexander Cancer Center, the Towsley Senior Health Building and the Ellen Thompson Women’s Health Center as well as the Hospital’s Emergency Center, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Helen and Marion S. DeWeese, MD, Surgery Pavilion and the new Patient Towers. St. Joe’s ability to inspire unprecedented gifts during the uncertainty of the slow economic recovery is a testament to the important role that St. Joe’s plays in our community, the impact we have had on millions of lives and the difference we will continue to make,” said Rob Casalou, President and CEO of St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor, Saline and Livingston. This gift will help build the South Pavilion, which encompasses a new and expanded emergency department and two floors of new, private inpatient rooms at the Livonia hospital. In the time since Mr. Celani’s announcement, the Saint Joseph Mercy Health System Development Council unanimously approved the Generations Together Campaign. They established a fundraising goal of $8 million, based on the findings of a feasibility study conducted in the community in early 2011. The Council also encouraged Development staff to begin recruiting campaign volunteers and discussing potential leadership gifts with donors. Campaign Co-chairs Carol Cassie (far left) and Dan Murphy (far right) served in leadership roles at the 2011 Gala; photographed here with Doctors Louis and Sandy Bojrab and friends, and Clare Murphy. Two loyal and active supporters of St. Mary Mercy Hospital will lead the Generations Together Campaign. Co-chairing the initiative is Carol Cassie, founder of the Hospital’s annual Gala. Mrs. Cassie shares a rich history with the Livonia community and has been integral in St. Mary Mercy’s fundraising efforts for the past twenty years. Mrs. Cassie will be sharing the responsibility of leading the Campaign’s five-year community fund-raising effort with Dan Murphy. Mr. Murphy grew up in Livonia and is a community businessman. He also has the distinction of being the first man to chair the Hospital’s Gala, with 2011’s “Dancing Like the Stars.” Both co-chairs bring a sense of community and professionalism to their roles in leading the Generations Together Campaign. Joining them in her role as Honorary Campaign Chair is Sr. Mary Modesta Piwowar. “St. Mary Mercy Livonia has been our community’s hospital for the past 50 years,” agreed Carol Cassie and Dan Murphy. “We are proud to be leading the Generations Together Campaign to help carry on the Felician Sisters’ promise to respond to the health care needs of the time. We hope that you will join us in this effort to raise funds that will benefit patients of every age today and those who turn to St. Mary Mercy for care in the future.” Sister Mary Modesta Piwowar, Honorary Chair Sr. Modesta and Sr. Renetta at a ground-breaking ceremony for the Hospital’s 1985 expansion. (Continued next page) Meeting Patients’ Needs by Thinking “Outside of the Box” and “Inside of the Grid” Since 2002, the RNR Foundation has supported SJMHS with gifts totaling nearly $350,000 for programs that pioneer health care innovation, enhance quality and safety and reduce costs. Most recently, the Foundation funded a pilot project developed by SJMHS staff, the Community Connections Grid. The program proved to be highly effective at its pilot location, the Neighborhood Family Health Center in Ypsilanti, and has become an important part of patient care there and at hospitals and health centers throughout Trinity Health. The Community Connections Grid helps SJMHS staff to identify when patients need help navigating health care services or getting their basic health and quality-of-life needs met. At the time of registration, patients are asked to take a brief survey via a touch-screen computer within a kiosk in the waiting area. The survey allows staff to learn about issues that may be affecting the patient’s health, but that might not come up at the medical visit. In addition, SJMHS partners with the local United Way 2-1-1 program, which includes a call center, a database of community services, and guidance for individuals who need help connecting to those services. This partnership gives patients direct access to 2-1-1 and, ultimately, agencies that can provide immediate and long-term assistance. Using the Community Connections Grid in partnership with the 2-1-1 program, “we can triage issues more effectively and include these dimensions in the clinical visit,” says Lakshmi Halasyamani, MD, SJMHS Vice President of Medical Affairs and a leader on the pilot project. “Frequently, the clinical providers are not aware of the challenges that patients may face that can affect health and adherence to prescribed therapies. Through this assessment, those issues are identified and also linked to potential helpful interventions.” In the first 15 months, nearly 1,000 patients took the Community Connections Grid survey, and 55 percent indicated unmet needs that contributed to health risks. These included skipped meals, no rides to pick up food, going without prescriptions due to cost or transportation issues, no doctor referrals and confusion about where to go for services. The RNR Foundation’s generosity has helped us to make a difference in patients’ lives. Adding this important layer to the health care visit puts patients in touch with the essentials and health services needed to prevent chronic illnesses, trips to the ER and hospitalization and to reduce barriers to good health and wellness. Campaign Leadership Positioned for Success at St. Mary Mercy Livonia (Continued from page 6) The Campaign Co-Chairs are now actively putting together their campaign cabinet: a group of local community leaders, physicians and business representatives who will continue growing the momentum begun in August with the Hearts of Livonia pledge. For more information regarding support of the Generations Together Campaign and South Pavilion project at St. Mary Mercy, please contact the Development Office at 734-655-2980. Our volunteers and donors have played a key role in our achievements and allowed us to touch the lives of patients and families in our community a million times over. Special events are among the most visible ways that the community has become involved. In addition to raising much-needed funds for our health care services, special events have helped to strengthen St. Joe’s relationship with the community. In the Hospital’s 100th year, St. Joe’s Holiday Ball celebrated more than three decades of success – the foundation for a $1 million event. We would like to thank the women – our Holiday Ball Chairs – who have made it all possible. Photographed here are the Chairs in attendance at the 2011 Holiday Ball Chairs luncheon with several members of SJMHS leadership: (front row, left to right) Maya Savarino; Marnee DeVine; Sister Yvonne Gellise, SJMHS Senior Advisor for Governance; Sheila Shulman; Dottie Farhat; Laurie Prager; (second row) Stephanie Lord; Judy Johns; Julie Beer; Ann Schriber; Fran Talsma; (third row) Nan Conlin; Jan Lyons; Barbara Faja; Kathy Hentschel; Kelly Sorini; (back row) Rob Casalou, President & CEO of St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor, Saline and Livingston; Kerry McNulty;Teri Shields;Wendy Holmes; Kristin Casalou;Techy Rodriguez-Doyle; Garry C.
