Long, long, ago, in ancient
Greece, the people paid tribute to Rhea, the Mother of
the gods, each spring. A little
later in history it is noted that
England paid homage to
mothers on "Mothering Sunday," the fourth Sunday of
Lent.
A more modern version of
Mother's Day began in the
1600s in England. Mothering
Sunday was celebrated on the
fourth Sunday of Lent. Small
gifts were given, and a special dessert called a simnel
cake was served.
In the United States,
began a campaign to
create a national holiday
honoring mothers. She
and her supporters wrote
to ministers, businessmen and politicians, and
they were successful in
their efforts.
In 1910 the first
Mother's Day proclamation was issued in the
United States. The
Mother's Day International Association was
incorporated on December 12, 1912, with the
purpose of furthering
meaningful observations
of Mother's Day.
Mother's Day was first
suggested in 1872 by Julia
Ward Howe (famous for
writing the words to the
"Battle Hymn of the Republic"). But it was a
woman who was never a
mother herself who led the
campaign for national recognition of Mother's Day.
Anna Jarvis held a ceremony in 1907 in Grafton,
West Virginia, to honor
her mother, who had died
two years earlier. Jarvis'
mother had tried to establish Mother's Friendship
Days as a way of dealing Continues on page 2

Happy Mothers Day !
So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground
Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired as
he was from the journey, sat down by the well. When a Samaritan woman came to
draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?" (His disciples had gone
into the town to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and
I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it
is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given
you living water.”Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the
well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father
Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his
flocks and herds?" Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty
again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I
give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. The
woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to
keep coming here to draw water."

both of us enjoyed it.” Poor Brer
Fish looked at the soup bowl.
Everything was gone. He was very
hungry. But said nothing. He
smiled. “Yes it was very good
Tata Duende,” he said. “You have
been a great host to me, one that
I will never forget. If you ever
visit Placencia, I live at the Barrier
Reef.” Fish went away and never
told anyone about his experience .

Some residents of northern Mexico,
influenced by their neighbor the
United States, began to observe a
Mother's Day holiday in the early part
of the 20th century. However, it took
an editorial in a Mexico City newspaper, combined with a widespread media campaign and support from the
Catholic Church, to bring the observance into full flower.
By the 1920s, some people in Mexico
were becoming concerned. In an effort to promote motherhood, the Mexican women's magazine, joined forces
with the Association of Catholic Ladies. Rafael Alducin, editor of the
Mexico City newspaper, joined the
fight and organized the first official
celebration of Mother's Day in Mexico
on May 10, 1922
Belize, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia and Belgium celebrate
Mother's Day on the same day as the
United States. Other countries celebrate Mother's Day as well, though not
on the same day .The United Kingdom , Canada, China, Japan, Belgium
and many other countries Also celebrate Mother’s Day to honor mothers
and grandmothers for all that they do
in raising children.
