Heart to Heart
Thimbles, Spoons, Rocks, and Unleavened Bread
There is one from almost everywhere the road has taken us. Spoons from Iraq, Afghanistan, Qatar, Kuwait and others mark, my brother, Jon’s military travels, and next
to those were thimbles from Chama, Pagosa Springs, Galveston, Yellowstone, and
other family vacation destinations. It was a way that mom held onto the memories of
where we had been together and individually. Mom would often stop a conversation or
an activity if she spied a curious child eyeing one of her tiny treasures. Whether they
were her grandkids or simply the child of a guest she would oblige their curiosity and
begin to recount what made each one special. The thimble from Chama reminded her
not only of the great family vacations we took to the mountains of New Mexico when I
was younger but also of taking all the grandkids on a wonderful and memorable train
ride there; or the thimble that Crystal brought back from Hawaii to give mom even before Crystal and I were married (definitely bonus future daughter-in-law points were
earned). All of mom’s mementos were simply a great excuse to tell over and over our
family memories.
In a similar fashion, Joshua asked the children of Israel to remind their children of
when the Lord stopped the flow of the Jordan before they crossed into the Promised
Land: 4 Then Joshua called the twelve men from the people of Israel, whom he had appointed, a man from each tribe. 5 And Joshua said to them, “Pass on before the ark of
the LORD your God into the midst of the Jordan, and take up each of you a stone upon his
shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the people of Israel, 6 that this may be a
sign among you. When your children ask in time to come, ‘What do those stones mean to
you?’ 7 then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of
the covenant of the LORD. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut
off. So these stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever.” Joshua 4:4-7

Did you catch that, “when your children ask.” I love how inquisitive kids are! I especially appreciate how God uses their curiosity to remind those of us who are older that
may neglect to remember of God’s faithfulness to His people otherwise.
In a similar way Jesus took elements from the Passover meal, which was itself a
meal of remembrance of God delivering His people from the bondage of Pharaoh, and
gave us our own memorial meal reminding us of our deliverance from the bondage of
sin and death: 22 And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and
gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” 23 And he took a cup, and when he
had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. 24 And he said to them, “This
is my blood of the[c] covenant, which is poured out for many. Mark 14:22-24
As we remember our Lord this day, let us remember how far he has brought us.
And to those who may be looking curiously at this strange meal (perhaps they are even
sitting in the pew next to us) let us tell, once again, of a great family story. The story of
how we were born into this family of faith, or maybe we need to remind ourselves of
His continued faithfulness to us throughout our struggles.
I am so grateful to be eating this memorial meal with you today as we remember
once again our great Savior and His great Salvation!

from a horse and then had a heart attack.
He was from East Texas.

Audrey Balch will be coming home to Midland next week and

Prayer List
Wayne Fowler had knee surgery on Friday.
Glen Osborn has completed chemo.
Kara Moore will have a week off of her weekly chemo treatments.
Patsy Stockstill received good results on Monday but the medication is taking a toll on her energy.
Bill Crozier has been moved into long-term care at Manor Park, room 405.
Nora Chandler has gone home from the hospital and plans to do rehab.
Debbie Maxwell has been put on heavy medication to relieve spinal pressure and is still awaiting further test results.
Mary Alice Tidwell fell and badly injured her shoulder last week.
Audrey Balch was able to receive chemo last Friday and has another round on the 27th.
Betty Williams will have a procedure tomorrow.
Chris Russell, husband of former member Quata Russell, is experiencing kidney failure due to cancer.
Ken & Marsha Chorice of Memphis, Tennessee, friends of the Richardson’s, are in need of our prayers. Ken has multiple
myeloma and Marsha just found out that she has breast cancer.

with the chemo and will be checked out in 6 weeks for make sure I’m clear of cancer. Prayers did help me
