Manly is located a mere seven miles north-east of Sydney and is considered the gateway to Sydney’s beautiful Northern Beaches. “7 miles from Sydney and 1000 miles from care” – a slogan used by the Port Jackson & Manly Steamship Company in 1940, is still the best way to describe ‘Australia’s Premier Seaside Resort’. No visit to Sydney is complete without coming here. Manly was named by Capt. Arthur Phillip in 1788 for the indigenous people living here: “Their confidence and manly behaviour made me give the name of Manly Cove to this place”. Today Manly is mostly famous for its popular beaches – a long stretch of sand on the ocean side, running from Queenscliff to Manly Beach, followed by the Fairy Bower rock pool and Shelly Beach. Furthermore you’ll find a number of stunning beaches on the harbour side. A symbolic feature of Manly are the prominent Norfolk Island pine trees on both the ocean and harbour beaches. In 2012, the 4km stretch between Freshwater Beach and Shelly Beach has been declared “Manly-Freshwater World Surfing Reserve”. Read more about Manly’s rich surfing history on page 67. I purchased them from your retail store in Ventura and since then they have had a busy and productive life. They paddled rivers throughout Canada, Chile, Sri Lanka and the States. Surf trips to India, Sri Lanka, Indo, Aussie, Peru, Ecuador, all over Mexico, and have spent way in excess of 60 months accumulated in Southern Baja, where we live 1/2 time. It took years before they required any maintenance, well and as you can see they have a new ass end. A recycled beach umbrella has done the job well. Also the material flap that was hanging off for ages has now been sewn into the butt end of another pair of (non Patagonia) boardies that fell apart … so they still live on. The cut and design of these are amazing, it is hard to find a pair that fits me so well … old school style works for this older, shorter guy. So, Patagonia Manly 4 min hopefully your R&D group may find some way of 24 Darley Rd, Manly 02 9977 7623 bringing back this functional style and rugged piece of gear. Manly was the site of Australia’s first legal bathing (1902), hosted the first known body surfing contest in 1908 and was the launch site of Australia’s first official surf patrol boat (1907). The first recorded attempt to ride a surfboard took place in 1912, when C. D. Patterson challenged the waves on a solid board he imported from Hawaii. In 1964, the first World Surfboard Riding Championship was hosted in Manly. Local surfer Bernard ‘Midget’ Farrelly won the men’s title and Phyllis O’Donnell the women’s. Freshwater famously played host to Duke Kahanamoku’s surfing demonstration in the Summer months of 1914-1915. Perched high on the headland overlooking Freshwater Beach is a monument to the man who brought the sport of Surfing to Australia. The splendid bronze statue of the legendary Duke Kahanamoku was donated and installed by the Harbord Diggers Memorial Club in 1994. In March 2012, Manly-Freshwater was honoured to become the first World Surfing Rerserve in Australia and the third in the world due to its outstanding surf breaks as well as its rich surfing history and culture. The Manly-Freshwater World Surfing Reserve stretches over 4km from Harbord Point to Fairy Bower, including Freshwater, Queenscliff, North Steyne, Manly and Shelly Beach and Fairy Bower Point. Besides the many popular beach breaks, it hosts the well-known Queenscliff Bombora, Frenchmans Reef and the infamous Fairy Bower, home to some of the largest waves ridden in Australia. sup rental & surftech boards 1 hr $25 2 hrs $45 4 hrs $65 day$100 week$200 Credit Card or passport held for deposit secure lockers $2 per hour Surfers at Queenscliff, 1953 photo: Manly Council Collection 67 > surfing surfing Learn Australian surfing style Manly Beach is a popular destination for the learning surfer. If you haven’t surfed before or you’d simply like to refresh your skills and your knowledge about the beach, it is always a good idea to take lessons at an accredited surf school. Qualified surf instructors will show you everything you need to know to get on your feet quickly, point out the best and safest spots for beginners and how to behave in the water to avoid dangers. Dropping in on other surfers is probably the worst thing a learning surfer can do. So, to be respected by other surfers make sure you start by respecting them and follow standard rules. Like any other sport, the key to learning is practice. “Surfers’ Code of Etiquette” signs, shaped like surfboards and complete with easy-to-follow illustrations, placed at North Steyne Beach and the boat shed at Queenscliff, outlining the basic “rules” of surfing etiquette (see illustration to the right).
