The Physical Literacy Springboard
What is physical literacy, and more importantly, how can we use
it as a jumping-off point for spreading health and wellness in our
communities? Industry experts come together to define the concept of
physical literacy and discuss how to use your position as a fitness leader
to promote not only BEING healthy but LIVING healthy. Leap from the
physical literacy springboard into a whole new world where wellness
has as much to do with our mind as it does with our body, and ventures
beyond the fitness centre into our everyday lives.

AQUATIC STREAM
AQ1: Totally Tethered
Leah Esplen | 8 — 9:30 am
This is a perfect athletic deep-water class for a small space!
The problem with tethered training is that it primarily works
the saggital plane, ignoring the frontal and transverse planes.
Learn fun and challenging exercises that will work all 3 planes
of the body in this interactive workshop.
AQ2: Aquatic Therapy & Injury Rehab
Maria Barwig | 9:45 — 11:15 am
Rehabbing after an injury? Why not consider the water! Here
are some exercises for those you teach. In this hour we will
review shoulder, lower back, hip, knee, and ankle injuries.
You will learn what exercises to avoid when having these
injuries, and how to build a program with modifications as
participants get stronger!

CONFERENCE SESSIONS
BUSINESS/ PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT
A1: From the Couch to the Community Cate Baio | 8 — 9:20 am
How do we get the inactive off the couch and moving? This is
a very complex issue and there is no single solution. We will
explore the barriers to fitness and wellness and ways we can
facilitate change as fitness professionals. We will discuss what
has been done in other communities and what you can do to
help those who need to start moving!
A2: Fitness Professional Burnout — Take
Care of You and Your Career Will Thrive
Brenda Adams | 10:30 — 11:45 am
Your outlook and attitude in life directly impacts your career.
If you’re not at 100%, the people you teach won’t be getting
your best. Your strongest asset is YOU. People aren’t just
buying your service, they’re buying an experience with you. In
this session you’ll learn why this experience is critical to your
success and the ONE thing that you MUST do so you can be
at your best and have your roster full and your participants
raving about you.
A3: Motor Learning and Aging
Dr. Jeff Almon | 2:35 — 4 pm
Although connections between cognitive deficits and
age-associated brain differences have been explained,
relationships with motor performance are less well
understood. Here, we broadly review age-related brain
differences and motor deficits in older adults, in addition to
cognition-action theories. We will examine existing exercise,
pharmaceutical, and motor training interventions that may
improve motor deficits in older adults.
7 | www.bcrpa.bc.ca
B1: Epigenetics: Influencing Genetics
Through Activity and Nutrition —
The Good Stuff! Dr. Bill Luke | 8 — 9:20 am
Don’t blame your DNA! There is substantial research that
clearly shows activity and nutrition can influence the
effect of genetics on health, wellness and function. With
an understanding of epigenetics, fitness leaders have an
opportunity to motivate and inspire an active lifestyle.
This session will look at the science of epigenetics and how
these recent research findings can be used to educate and
inspire fitness participants to take charge of their health and
wellness.
B2: Community = Motivation Melanie Osmack | 10:30 — 11:45 am
When you look at some of the most successful fitness
businesses out there they all have one thing in common:
community. When people feel part of a group, when they
look forward to interacting with others they have built a
relationship with, they are significantly more likely to stay
motivated. They show up more often, they prioritize fitness
and they work harder. Learn how to build community among
your clients and begin enjoying the results.
B3: Aspire to Inspire Debbie Jessen | 2:35 — 4 pm
Do you want to help inspire your participants to stick with
a fitness routine and meet their personal goals? Take your
teaching skills to the next level of professionalism with tips
on everything from cueing and choreography to marketing
yourself and your classes. Aspire to be the best that you can be
at what you love to do!

challenging workouts for all levels with no equipment
required.
Reboot and refresh your old step routine for 2016. In this

Michelle Carpenter & Jonathan Carpenter |

Hitting targets is incredibly empowering, and fused with other
dynamic and challenging exercises this workout will become a
client favourite. Drills will include a variety of punching (and a
little kicking!), layered with functional exercises that make use
of bodyweight and small equipment. You will walk away with a
ready-to-deliver list of drills for your clients and classes that are

E1: The Pros and Cons of High Intensity
Interval Training (HIIT)
André Noël Potvin | 8 — 9:20 am
High intensity interval training (HIIT) has become a very
popular form of conditioning and for good reason — it gets
results. But, it can also do more harm than good. Join André
Noël Potvin, MSc, as he teaches you the art and science of HIIT,
including how it can improve cardio and fat-loss efforts in less
time, and the common mistakes to avoid.
E2: Shut Up and Let Movement Do the
Coaching
Andrew Heming | 10:30 — 11:45 am
Ever been frustrated to try and get your client to move the way
you want them? We all have. However, thanks to new research
in the area of motor learning, we now know external cues
and movement can make learning proper exercise technique
faster, easier and less frustrating for you and your clients. This
session will review some of the science in this area and then
give tons of practical examples of how to use external cueing
and movement experience to better coach your clients.
8 | www.bcrpa.bc.ca
You’ll learn ways to add variety to old step routines using core
and balance exercises, stretching, and alignment elements
so your participants leave class feeling like they’ve had a full
body workout. Ryoko will also demonstrate techniques on
using music to cue your participants, and to create seamless
transitions between cardio and muscle conditioning. There
will be lots of modifications and variations that can be used
to create fun, multi-level step classes that will have mature
steppers, new steppers, and master steppers coming back
again and again!
C2: You = The Portable Gym
Andrea Perrino | 10:30 — 11:45 am
