A few thoughts
from the owners
Who also have
kids in sports
Thank you for considering Gear West! We are passionate about xc skiing and have
worked hard to create a ski store that provides you and your racer with terrific selection of skis, boots, and poles, a staff full of wisdom, and a lot of value in high school
packages! We want you to understand the quality of the equipment we have packaged together, the options available to you, and how we fit skis to meet your racer’s
needs as well as your financial needs.
About us? Brian won the xc skiing state meet for Coon Rapids (a very long time ago) and sold skis for Fischer. Jan fell in love
with skiing after college, quit her “real job”, raced a lot, and has owned a sports store for over 30 years. Our job, and everyone
who works for Gear West, is to provide you with the best service possible, make you excited about skiing, and happy with your
purchases.
Skier parents!
Your child has chosen cross country skiing - yay! The four ingredients to a
great ski experience are teammates, snow, coaches and equipment. At Gear
West we do a dance to encourage the snow, we employ XC ski coaches and
support them with discounts, but the equipment is where we shine. We know
skiing requires an investment and we take fitting customers with the right
gear seriously.
I can tell you with certainty that the value and fit of equipment purchased at
Gear West is the best you can find anywhere. Gear West, Jan, Brian and staff
guarantee you will be educated about the equipment that best fits the needs
of your student – classic or skate, beginner, intermediate or advanced. Be
excited that your son or daughter is interested in xc skiing. It is an amazing
sport that develops tenacity, love for the outdoors, coordination, fitness and
lasting friendships among all the participants- boys and girls. Thank you for
your trust.
Sincerely, Jan Guenther

Keeping your athlete warm and dry.
Cross country ski racers work hard in cold weather and they
perspire. To stay warm and dry it is essential to move sweat
away from their body while blocking wind and cold. This is
accomplished with a three-layer system: a quality, moisturewicking base layer, a thin fleece mid-layer and a wind-stopping
outer-layer.
BASE LAYER (Top and bottom) Transfers moisture away from
the skin and holds the warm air generated from exercise next to
the skin.
MID LAYER (Top) Insulated layer for cold days and/or easier workouts.
OUTER LAYER (Top and bottom) Blocks wind while wicking moisture away from the
body. Adds warmth.
