Why Update Your Google Business Listing?
First, the title to this article is wrong. It
should read “Did you know it’s mandatory to update your business listings if
you wish to survive in business?” And
yes, it is so important in today’s world to
make sure that you are found. Remember,
that if potential clients can’t find you, they
will find your competitors. With technology in the palm of our hand, it is important
that if a potential client is looking for your
business, that you be found. Let me give
you an example. Let’s say that after work
one day, I need to drop off some dry cleaning and I grab my handy phone and google
“best dry cleaners in the area”. I find three
dry cleaners, George’s Dry Cleaning, Best
Dry Clean, and Spot On Dry Cleaning.
Most of these are about 3 to 4 blocks away.
I pick Spot On Dry Cleaning, because of its
five star rating and drop off my clothes
after work. What I didn’t realize was that
only a ½ block away from my office, was a
dry cleaner “Best in the West Dry Cleaners” that has been in business over 50
years, and has an excellent reputation and
not only that, they have a pickup and delivery service. I didn’t know this because
when I googled it, Best in the West didn’t
even show up in my search.
Here’s another example. I need to get my
oil changed, and by searching I find Bob’s
Quick Oil Change Services. I put the address into my phone gps, and it navigates
me to a vacant building. No where in sight
is Bob’s Quick Oil Change Services. What
I didn’t know, was that about four months
ago, Bob moved, and the company never
updated their google map, or any of their
listings. No sign on the window, I drive
away disgusted that I just wasted gas and
my time trying to find a business that has
moved.
As you can see, it’s important to keep your
business listings up to date. The more information you can include in the listing the
better. For example; hours of operation,
address, phone, email address, website.
These are all very important to the success
of your business. The advice I give you my
business friends is update your business
local listings!
So, how do you update your local listings, you ask? Let me explain. You need
to go into your listings and update your
company information. A great place to start
is Google My Business. When you get to
Google, search for your business, if there is
an existing listing, claim your business by
verifying via phone or mail that you are the
business owner or representative. If you
cannot find your business, create a new
listing which will also need to be verified.
Once you have access to the listing then,
update all of your company information,
which may include adding photos or logos.
This is done because they want to make
sure you are who you are, and that it isn’t a
competitor. When you receive the postcard
or verification, enter the code verifying
who you are. Guess what? You’ve just updated your Google listing.

can find other
listings that are
more specific to
your business by
just googling your business. For example,

In closing, if you are in business and you
want to continue to be successful, you need
to make sure that you are found. By updating your local listings, you will be found. It
is definitely time consuming, but take the

Did you know 90% of computer breaches impact small businesses and the average cost to a small business can be
$36,000? So what are you doing to secure your computers? If your only answer is a firewall and anti-virus
program, this presentation is for you. Joe Cicero, NWTC's
Network Security Instructor will present information on the
methods hackers use to gain access to your computer so you
can more efficiently defend against the attacks. He will
outline applications and techniques you can use, at little
to no cost, to secure your computer from these threats.
Joe Cicero specializes in teaching Linux, Network Security,
and Computer Forensics Courses. In 1985 he joined the Marines. His final duty
assignment was as the Operations Chief for Special Operations Training Group,
Tactical Warfare Simulations Evaluations Analysis Systems where he traveled the
world conducting officer training through use of computer simulations.
Presented by the Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with
Sponsor Kersten Accounting & Tax.
